A book of size $q$ is a set of $q$ triangles sharing a common edge. We study the size of the maximal book in a graph as a function of the number of its edges. In particular, we answer two questions of Erdos about graphs that are union of triangles.
A book of size b in a graph is an edge that lies in b triangles. Consider a graph G with n vertices and \lfloor n^2/4\rfloor +1 edges. Rademacher proved that G contains at least \lfloor n/2\rfloor triangles, and Erdos conjectured and Edwards proved that G contains a book of size at least n/6. We prove the following "linear combination" of these two results. Suppose that α\in (1/2, 1) and the maximum size of a book in G is less than αn/2. Then G contains at least α(1-α) n^2/4 - o(n^2) triangles as n approaches infinity. This is asymptotically sharp. On the other hand, for every α\in (1/3, 1/2),…
A celebrated result of Mantel shows that every graph on $n$ vertices with $\lfloor n^2/4 \rfloor + 1$ edges must contain a triangle. A robust version of this result, due to Rademacher, says that there must in fact be at least $\lfloor n/2 \rfloor$ triangles in any such graph. Another strengthening, due to the combined efforts of many authors starting with Erdős, says that any such graph must have an edge which is contained in at least $n/6$ triangles. Following Mubayi, we study the interplay between these two results, that is, between the number of triangles in such graphs and their book numbe…
A book of size q is the union of q triangles sharing a common edge. We find the exact Ramsey number of books of size q versus books of size p when p<q/6-o(q).
A book of size N is the union of N triangles sharing a common edge. We show that the Ramsey number of a book of size N vs. a book of size M equals 2N+3 for all N>(10^6)M. Our proof is based on counting.
Given a graph $G$, a Berge copy of $G$ is a hypergraph obtained by enlarging the edges arbitrarily. Gy\H ori in 2006 showed that for $r=3$ or $r=4$, an $r$-uniform $n$-vertex Berge triangle-free hypergraph has at most $\lfloor n^2/8(r-2)\rfloor$ hyperedges if $n$ is large enough, and this bound is sharp. The book graph $B_t$ consists of $t$ triangles sharing an edge. Very recently, Ghosh, Győri, Nagy-György, Paulos, Xiao and Zamora showed that a 3-uniform $n$-vertex Berge $B_t$-free hypergraph has at most $n^2/8+o(n^2)$ hyperedges if $n$ is large enough. They conjectured that this bound can be…
It is shown that the number of pages required for a book embedding of a graph is the maximum of the numbers needed for any of the maximal nonseparable subgraphs and that a plane graph in which every triangle bounds a face has a two-page book embedding. The latter extends a theorem of H. Whitney and gives two-page book embeddings for $X$-trees and square grids.

A set of $q$ triangles sharing a common edge is a called a book of size $q$. Letting $bk(G)$ denote the size of the largest book in a graph $G$, Erdős and Rothschild \cite{erdostwo} asked what the minimal value of $bk(G)$ is for graphs $G$ with $n$ vertices and a set number of edges where every edge is contained in at least one triangle. In this paper, we show that for any graph $G$ with $n$ vertices and $\frac{n^2}{4} - nf(n)$ edges where every edge is contained in at least one triangle, $bk(G) \geq Ω\left(\min{\{\frac{n}{\sqrt{f(n)}}, \frac{n^2}{f(n)^2}\}}\right)$.
Given a graph $G$ and a positive integer $k$, the \emph{Gallai-Ramsey number} is defined to be the minimum number of vertices $n$ such that any $k$-edge coloring of $K_n$ contains either a rainbow (all different colored) triangle or a monochromatic copy of $G$. In this paper, we obtain general upper and lower bounds on the Gallai-Ramsey numbers for books $B_{m} = K_{2} + \overline{K_{m}}$ and prove sharp results for $m \leq 5$.
A book $B_n$ is a graph which consists of $n$ triangles sharing a common edge. In 1978, Rousseau and Sheehan conjectured that the Ramsey number satisfies $r(B_m,B_n)\le 2(m+n)+c$ for some constant $c>0$. In this paper, we obtain that $r(B_m, B_n)\le 2(m+n)+o(n)$ for all $m\le n$ and $n$ large, which confirms the conjecture of Rousseau and Sheehan asymptotically. As a corollary, our result implies that a related conjecture of Faudree, Rousseau and Sheehan (1982) on strongly regular graph holds asymptotically.

The $n$-$book ~embedding$ of a graph $G$ is an embedding of the graph $G$ in an $n$-book with the vertices of $G$ on the spine and each edge to the pages without crossing each other. If the degree of vertices of $G$ at most one in each page, the $n$-book embedding is $matching$. The $matching~ book~ thickness$ of graph $G$ is the smallest $n$ so that $G$ can be matching embedded in an $n$-book. In this paper, the matching book thickness of the biconnected outerplanar graphs is determined.
In 2015, Matthias Beck and his team developed a computer program in SAGE which efficiently determines the number of signed proper $k$-colorings for a given signed graph. In this article, we determine the number of different signatures on Book graph up to switching isomorphisms. We also find a recursive formula of the signed chromatic polynomials of signed Book graphs.
A book embedding of a graph consists of an embedding of its vertices along the spine of a book, and an embedding of its edges on the pages such that edges embedded on the same page do not intersect. The pagenumber is the minimum number of pages in which the graph $G$ can be embedded. The main purpose of this paper is to study the book embedding of the complete expansion graph. This is the first work about it, and some exact pagenumbers of the complete expansion graphs of some special graphs are obtained.
The \emph{matching book embedding} of a graph $G$ is to arrange its vertices on the spine, and draw its edges into the pages so that the edges on every page do not intersect each other and the maximum degree of vertices on every page is one. The \emph{matching book thickness} is the minimum number of pages in which the graph $G$ can be matching embedded. In this paper, the matching book thickness of Halin graphs is determined.
A graph $G$ has a $k$-page book embedding if $G$ can be embedded into a $k$-page book. The minimum $k$ such that $G$ has a $k$-page book embedding is the book thickness of $G$, denoted $bt(G)$. Most of the work on this subject has been done for unoriented graphs and oriented acyclic graphs (no directed cycles). In this work we discuss oriented graphs $\overrightarrow{D}$ containing directed cycles by using oriented book embeddings and oriented book thickness, $obt(\overrightarrow{D})$. To characterize $\overrightarrow{D}$ such that $obt(\overrightarrow{D}) = k$, we define the class $\mathcal{M…
The $book$ $embedding$ of a graph $G$ is to place the vertices of $G$ on the spine and draw the edges to the pages so that the edges in the same page do not cross with each other. The book embedding is $matching$ if the pages have maximum degree $1$. The $matching$ $book$ $thickness$ is the minimum number of pages in which graphs can be matching book embedded. In this paper, we show that the matching book thickness of the Cartesian product $K_p\Box C_q$of a complete graph $K_p$ and a cycle $C_q$ is equal to $Δ(K_p\Box C_q)+1$.
Let G be a simple graph of order n. The domination polynomial of a graph is the generating function of its dominating sets. We study the domination polynomials of generalized friendship graphs. We also consider book graphs formed by joining n copies of the cycle graph of order 4 with a common edge and study the domination polynomials of some generalized book graphs. In particular we examine the domination roots of these families and find the limiting curve for the roots.
Given a graph $H$ and a positive integer $n,$ the Turán number of $H$ for the order $n,$ denoted ${\rm ex}(n,H),$ is the maximum size of a simple graph of order $n$ not containing $H$ as a subgraph. The book with $p$ pages, denoted $B_p$, is the graph that consists of $p$ triangles sharing a common edge. Bollobás and Erdős initiated the research on the Turán number of book graphs in 1975. The two numbers ${\rm ex}(p+2,B_p)$ and ${\rm ex}(p+3,B_p)$ have been determined by Qiao and Zhan. In this paper we determine the numbers ${\rm ex}(p+4,B_p),$ ${\rm ex}(p+5,B_p)$ and ${\rm ex}(p+6,B_p),$ and …
For $m \geq 3$ and $n \geq 1$, the $m$-cycle book graph $B(m,n)$ consists of $n$ copies of the cycle $C_m$ with one common edge. In this paper, we prove that (a) the number of switching non-isomorphic signed $B(m,n)$ is $n+1$, and (b) the chromatic number of a signed $B(m,n)$ is either 2 or 3. We also obtain explicit formulas for the chromatic polynomials and the zero-free chromatic polynomials of switching non-isomorphic signed book graphs.
The triangle graph of a graph $G$, denoted by ${\cal T}(G)$, is the graph whose vertices represent the triangles ($K_3$ subgraphs) of $G$, and two vertices of ${\cal T}(G)$ are adjacent if and only if the corresponding triangles share an edge. In this paper, we characterize graphs whose triangle graph is a cycle and then extend the result to obtain a characterization of $C_n$-free triangle graphs. As a consequence, we give a forbidden subgraph characterization of graphs $G$ for which ${\cal T}(G)$ is a tree, a chordal graph, or a perfect graph. For the class of graphs whose triangle graph is p…
Aksenov proved that in a planar graph G with at most one triangle, every precoloring of a 4-cycle can be extended to a 3-coloring of G. We give an exact characterization of planar graphs with two triangles in that some precoloring of a 4-cycle does not extend. We apply this characterization to solve the precoloring extension problem from two 4-cycles in a triangle-free planar graph in the case that the precolored 4-cycles are separated by many disjoint 4-cycles. The latter result is used in followup papers to give detailed information about the structure of 4-critical triangle-free graphs embe…
A \emph{book-embedding} of a graph $G$ is an embedding of vertices of $G$ along the spine of a book, and edges of $G$ on the pages so that no two edges on the same page intersect. the minimum number of pages in which a graph can be embedded is called the \emph{page number}. The book-embedding of graphs may be important in several technical applications, e.g., sorting with parallel stacks, fault-tolerant processor arrays design, and layout problems with application to very large scale integration (VLSI). Bernhart and Kainen firstly considered the book-embedding of the planar graph and conjectur…
It is shown that for $n\geq 141$, among all triangle-free graphs on $n$ vertices, the complete equibipartite graph is the unique triangle-free graph with the greatest number of cycles.
It is well known that a graph with $m$ edges can be made triangle-free by removing (slightly less than) $m/2$ edges. On the other hand, there are many classes of graphs which are hard to make triangle-free in the sense that it is necessary to remove roughly $m/2$ edges in order to eliminate all triangles. It is proved that dense graphs that are hard to make triangle-free, have a large packing of pairwise edge-disjoint triangles. In particular, they have more than $m(1/4+cβ^2)$ pairwise edge-disjoint triangles where $β$ is the density of the graph and $c$ is an absolute constant. This improves …
Consider the triangle-free graph process, which starts from the empty graph on $n$ vertices and a random ordering of the possible ${n \choose 2}$ edges; the edges are added in this ordering provided the graph remains triangle free. We will show that there exists a constant $c$ such that no copy of any fixed finite triangle-free graph on $k$ vertices with at least $ck$ edges asymptotically almost surely appears in the triangle-free graph process.
We prove that any $n$-vertex graph whose complement is triangle-free contains $n^2/12-o(n^2)$ edge-disjoint triangles. This is tight for the disjoint union of two cliques of order $n/2$. We also prove a corresponding stability theorem, that all large graphs attaining the above bound are close to being bipartite. Our results answer a question of Alon and Linial, and make progress on a conjecture of Erdős.
A triangle-free graph G is called k-existentially complete if for every induced k-vertex subgraph H of G, every extension of H to a (k+1)-vertex triangle-free graph can be realized by adding another vertex of G to H. Cherlin asked whether k-existentially complete triangle-free graphs exist for every k. Here we present known and new constructions of 3-existentially complete triangle-free graphs.
Scott conjectured that the class of graphs with no induced subdivision of a given graph is $χ$-bounded. We verify his conjecture for maximal triangle-free graphs.
A triangle decomposition of a graph is a partition of its edges into triangles. A fractional triangle decomposition of a graph is an assignment of a non-negative weight to each of its triangles such that the sum of the weights of the triangles containing any given edge is one. We prove that for all $ε> 0$, every large enough graph graph on $n$ vertices with minimum degree at least $(0.9 + ε)n$ has a fractional triangle decomposition. This improves a result of Garaschuk that the same result holds for graphs with minimum degree at least $0.956n$. Together with a recent result of Barber, Kühn, Lo…
A connected $k$-chromatic graph $G$ with $k \geq 3$ is said to be triangle-critical, if every edge of $G$ is contained in an induced triangle of $G$ and the removal of any triangle from $G$ decreases the chromatic number of $G$ by three. B. Toft posed the problem of showing that the complete graphs on more than two vertices are the only triangle-critical graphs. By applying a method of M. Stiebitz [Discrete Math. 64 (1987), 91--93], we answer the problem affirmatively for triangle-critical $k$-chromatic graphs with $k \leq 6$.
A multigraph G is triangle decomposable if its edge set can be partitioned into subsets, each of which induces a triangle of G, and rationally triangle decomposable if its triangles can be assigned rational weights such that for each edge e of G, the sum of the weights of the triangles that contain e equals 1. We present a necessary and sufficient condition for a planar multigraph to be triangle decomposable. We also show that if a simple planar graph is rationally triangle decomposable, then it has such a decomposition using only weights 0,1 and 1/2. This result provides a characterization of…
A construction of Alon yields a sequence of highly pseudorandom triangle-free graphs with edge density significantly higher than one might expect from comparison with random graphs. We give an alternative construction for such graphs.
We improve the estimates of the subgraph probabilities in a random regular graph. Using the improved results, we further improve the limiting distribution of the number of triangles in random regular graphs.
We consider the problem of minimizing the number of triangles in a graph of given order and size and describe the asymptotic structure of extremal graphs. This is achieved by characterizing the set of flag algebra homomorphisms that minimize the triangle density.
We study triangle decompositions of graphs. We consider constructions of classes of graphs where every edge lies on a triangle and the addition of the minimum number of multiple edges between already adjacent vertices results in a strongly triangle divisible graph that is also triangle decomposable. We explore several classes of planar graphs as well as a class of toroidal graphs.
A book $B_n$ is a graph which consists of $n$ triangles sharing a common edge. In this paper, we study Ramsey numbers of quadrilateral versus books. Previous results give the exact value of $r(C_4,B_n)$ for $1\le n\le 14$. We aim to show the exact value of $r(C_4,B_n)$ for infinitely many $n$. To achieve this, we first prove that $r(C_4,B_{(m-1)^2+(t-2)})\le m^2+t$ for $m\ge4$ and $0 \leq t \leq m-1$. This improves upon a result by Faudree, Rousseau and Sheehan (1978) which states that \begin{align*} r(C_4,B_n)\le g(g(n)), \;\;\text{where}\;\;g(n)=n+\lfloor\sqrt{n-1}\rfloor+2. \end{align*} Com…
A Stacked-book graph Gm,n is obtained from the Cartesian product of a star graph Sm and a path Pn, where m and s are the orders of the star graph and the path respectively. Obtaining the radio number of a graph is a rigorous process, which is dependent on the diameter of G and positive difference of non-negative integer labels f(u) and f(v) assigned to any two u, v in the vertex set V (G) of G. This paper obtains tight upper and lower bounds of the radio number of Gm,n where the path Pn has an odd order. The case where Pn has an even order has been investigated.
A simplified version of the theory of strongly regular graphs is developed for the case in which the graphs have no triangles. This leads to (i) direct proofs of the Krein conditions, and (ii) the characterization of strongly regular graphs with no triangles such that the second subconstituent is also strongly regular. The method also provides an effective means of listing feasible parameters for such graphs.
In this paper, graphs under consideration are always edge-colored. We consider long heterochromatic paths in heterochromatic triangle free graphs. Two kinds of such graphs are considered, one is complete graphs with Gallai colorings, i.e., heterochromatic triangle free complete graphs; the other is heterochromatic triangle free graphs with $k$-good colorings, i.e., minimum color degree at least $k$. For the heterochromatic triangle free graphs $K_n$, we obtain that for every vertex $v\in V(K_n)$, $K_n$ has a heterochromatic $v$-path of length at least $d^c(v)$; whereas for the heterochromatic …
The triangle packing number $ν(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the maximum size of a set of edge-disjoint triangles in $G$. Tuza conjectured that in any graph $G$ there exists a set of at most $2ν(G)$ edges intersecting every triangle in $G$. We show that Tuza's conjecture holds in the random graph $G=G(n,m)$, when $m \le 0.2403n^{3/2}$ or $m\ge 2.1243n^{3/2}$. This is done by analyzing a greedy algorithm for finding large triangle packings in random graphs.
We prove a decomposition theorem for the class of triangle-free graphs that do not contain a subdivision of the complete graph on four vertices as an induced subgraph. We prove that every graph of girth at least~5 in this class is 3-colorable.
This paper proves that for each positive integer $m$, there is a triangle-free planar graph $G$ which is not $(3m+ \lceil \frac m{17} \rceil-1, m)$-choosable.
We study 3-coloring properties of triangle-free planar graphs $G$ with two precolored 4-cycles $C_1$ and $C_2$ that are far apart. We prove that either every precoloring of $C_1\cup C_2$ extends to a 3-coloring of $G$, or $G$ contains one of two special substructures which uniquely determine which 3-colorings of $C_1\cup C_2$ extend. As a corollary, we prove that there exists a constant $D>0$ such that if $H$ is a planar triangle-free graph and $S\subseteq V(H)$ consists of vertices at pairwise distances at least $D$, then every precoloring of $S$ extends to a 3-coloring of $H$. This gives a p…
This paper presents infinitely many new examples of triangle-free uniquely 3-edge colorable cubic graphs. The only such graph previously known was given by Tutte in 1976.
We study 3-random-like graphs, that is, sequences of graphs in which the densities of triangles and anti-triangles converge to 1/8. Since the random graph ${\mathcal G}_{n,1/2}$ is, in particular, 3-random-like, this can be viewed as a weak version of quasirandomness. We first show that 3-random-like graphs are 4-universal, that is, they contain induced copies of all 4-vertex graphs. This settles a question of Linial and Morgenstern. We then show that for larger subgraphs, 3-random-like sequences demonstrate a completely different behaviour. We prove that for every graph $H$ on $n\geq R(10,10)…
The book embedding of a graph $G$ is to place the vertices of $G$ on the spine and draw the edges to the pages so that the edges in the same page do not cross with each other. A book embedding is matching if the vertices in the same page have maximum degree at most 1. The matching book thickness is the minimum number of pages in which a graph can be matching book embedded. A graph $G$ is dispersable if and only if $mbt(G)=Δ(G)$. In this paper, we prove that bipartite cubic planar graphs are dispersable.
The structure of all triangle free graphs G = (V,E) with |E| - 6|V| + 13α(G) = 0 is determined, yielding an affirmative answer to a question of Stanisław Radziszowski and Donald Kreher.
Heckman and Thomas conjectured that the fractional chromatic number of any triangle-free subcubic graph is at most 14/5. Improving on estimates of Hatami and Zhu and of Lu and Peng, we prove that the fractional chromatic number of any triangle-free subcubic graph is at most 32/11 (which is roughly 2.909).
We give an exact characterization of 3-colorability of triangle-free graphs drawn in the torus, in the form of 186 "templates" (graphs with certain faces filled by arbitrary quadrangulations) such that a graph from this class is not 3-colorable if and only if it contains a subgraph matching one of the templates. As a consequence, we show every triangle-free graph drawn in the torus with edge-width at least six is 3-colorable, a key property used in an efficient 3-colorability algorithm for triangle-free toroidal graphs.
We show the quarter of a century old conjecture that every $K_4$-free graph with $n$ vertices and $\lfloor n^2/4 \rfloor +k$ edges contains $k$ pairwise edge disjoint triangles.
We show that there exist efficient algorithms for the triangle packing problem in colored permutation graphs, complete multipartite graphs, distance-hereditary graphs, k-modular permutation graphs and complements of k-partite graphs (when k is fixed). We show that there is an efficient algorithm for C_4-packing on bipartite permutation graphs and we show that C_4-packing on bipartite graphs is NP-complete. We characterize the cobipartite graphs that have a triangle partition.
