Let $X$ be a smooth projective rationally connected threefold with nef anticanonical divisor. We give a classification for the case when $-K_X$ is not semi-ample.
In continuation of our paper in Math. Ann. 333 we classify smooth complex projective threefolds X with -K_X big and nef but not ample and Picard number 2, whose anticanonical map is small. We assume also that the Mori contraction of X and of its flop are not both birational.
Let $X$ be a smooth complex projective rationally connected threefold with $-K_X$ nef and not semi-ample. In our previous work, we classified all such threefolds when $|{-}K_X|$ has no fixed divisor. In this paper, we continue our classification when $|{-}K_X|$ has a non-zero fixed divisor.
We start the classification of smooth projective threefolds X whose anticanonical bundles -K_X are big and nef but not ample. In this paper we treat the case b_2(X) = 2 and the morphism associated with the base point free linear system |-mK_X|, m>>0, is divisorial.
We treat threefolds with divisorial contractions whose exceptional divisors contract to compound Du Val points. We prove that general elements in their anticanonical systems around the exceptional divisors have at worst Du Val singularities. As applications to classification, we describe divisorial contractions to compound A_n points, and moreover we conclude that discrepancies of divisorial contractions to compound D_n or E_n points are at most four.
We show that any Fano fivefold with canonical Gorenstein singularities has an effective anticanonical divisor. Moreover,if a general element of the anticanonical system is reduced, then it has canonical singularities. We also prove nonvanishing of anticanonical system in the case of log canonical Gorenstein singularities.
Any ample Cartier divisor D on a projective variety X is strictly nef (i.e. D.C>0 for any effective curve C on X). In general, the converse statement does not hold. But this is conjectured to be true for anticanonical divisors. The present paper establishes this fact for normal complex projective threefolds with canonical singularities. This result extends several previously known special cases. The proof rests mainly on sophisticated techniques of three dimensional birational geometry developed in the last two decades.
Let X be the blow-up of the three dimensional complex projective space along r general points of a smooth elliptic quartic curve B of P^3 and let L be any line bundle of X. The aim of this paper is to provide an explicit algorithm for determining the dimension of H^0(X,L).
We classify all the effective anticanonical divisors on weak del Pezzo surfaces. Through this classification we obtain the smallest number among the log canonical thresholds of effective anticanonical divisors on a given Gorenstein canonical del Pezzo surface.
We prove that the Albanese map of a smooth projective threefold, whose anticanonical bundle is nef, is a surjective submersion. We also investigate morphisms of threefolds to curves and surfaces whose relative anticanonical bundle are nef.
Given $ε>0$, we show that over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p>5$, the anticanonical volume of a Fano threefold $X$ (with arbitrary singularities) whose anticanonical divisor has Seshadri constant $ε(-K_X,x)>2+ε$ at some smooth point $x\in X$ is bounded from above.
We discuss in this note which K3 surfaces appear as anticanonical divisors in a Fano threefold. We prove in particular that a general K3 surface with given Picard lattice P and polarization class h in P is an anticanonical divisor in a Fano threefold if and only if (P,h) is isomorphic to (Pic(V), c_1(V)) for some Fano threefold V, where Pic(V) is equipped with the intersection product (L,M) --> (L.M.c_1(V)).
We define and calculate the weighted multiplicities of non Gorenstein terminal singularities on threefolds and some quotient singularities. We improve freeness conditions on threefolds.
We present a list of arithmetically Gorenstein Calabi-Yau threefolds in $\mathbb{P}^7$ and give evidence that this is a complete list. In particular we construct three new families of arithmetically Gorenstein Calabi-Yau threefolds in $\mathbb{P}^7$ for which no mirror construction is known.
We classify the non-toric, $\mathbb Q$-factorial, Gorenstein, log terminal Fano threefolds of Picard number one that admit an effective action of a two-dimensional algebraic torus.
We classify some special classes of non-rational Fano threefolds with terminal singularities. In particular, all such hyperelliptic and trigonal varieties are found.
We classify nonrational Fano threefolds $X$ with terminal Gorenstein singularities such that $\mathrm{\rk}\, \mathrm{\Pic}(X)=1$, $(-K_X)^3\ge 8$, and $\mathrm{\rk}\, \mathrm{\Cl}(X)\le 2$.
We classify Fano 3-folds with canonical Gorenstein singularities whose anticanonical linear system has no base points but does not give an embedding, and we classify anticanonically embedded Fano 3-folds with canonical Gorenstein singularities which are not intersections of quadrics. We also study the rationality questions for most of these varieties.
We present a combinatorial criterion on reflexive polytopes of dimension 3 which gives a local-to-global obstruction for the smoothability of the corresponding Fano toric threefolds. As a result, we show examples of singular Gorenstein Fano toric threefolds which have compound Du Val, hence smoothable, singularities but are not smoothable.
We extend the known classification of threefolds of general type that are complete intersections to various classes of non-complete intersections, and find other classes of polarised varieties, including Calabi-Yau threefolds with canonical singularities, that are not complete intersections. Our methods apply more generally to construct orbifolds described by equations in given Gorenstein formats.
An extremal curve germ is the analytic germ of a threefold with terminal singularities along a reduced complete curve admitting a contraction whose fibers have dimension at most one. The aim of the present paper is to review the results concerning those contractions whose central fiber is irreducible and contains only one non-Gorenstein point.
We consider Fano threefolds $X$ with canonical Gorenstein singularities. Under additional assumption that $X$ has at least one non-cDV point we prove a sharp bound of the degree: $-K_X^3\le 72$.
We prove in the case of minimal Fano threefolds a conjecture stated by Dubrovin at the ICM 1998 in Berlin. The conjecture predicts that the symmetrized/alternated Euler characteristic pairing on $K_0$ of a Fano variety with an exceptional collection expressed in the basis of the classes of the exceptional objects coincides with the intersection pairing of the vanishing cycles in Dubrovin's second connection. We show that the conjecture holds for $V_{22}$, a minimal Fano threefold of anticanonical degree~22, and for $V_5$, the minimal Fano threefold of anticanonical degree~40, by applying the m…
The main propose of this paper is to show that Bridgeland's moduli space of perverse point sheaves for certain flopping contractions gives the flops, and the Fourier-Mukai transform given by the birational correspondence of the flop is an equivalence between bounded derived categories.
The map given by the anticanonical bundle of a Fano manifold is investigated with respect to a number of natural notions of higher order embeddings of projective manifolds. This is of importance in the understanding of higher order embeddings of the special varieties of adjunction theory, which are usually fibered by special Fano manifolds. An analysis is carried out of the higher order embeddings of the special varieties of adjunction theory that arise in the study of the first and second reductions. Special attention is given to determining the order of the anticanonical embeddings of the th…
In this note we illustrate the Fanosearch programme of Coates, Corti, Galkin, Golyshev, and Kasprzyk in the example of the anticanonical cone over the smooth del Pezzo surface of degree 6.
Let $X$ be a Gorenstein minimal projective $3$-fold with at worst locally factorial terminal singularities. Suppose that the canonical map is generically finite onto its image. C. Hacon showed that the canonical degree is universally bounded by $576$. We improved Hacon's universal bound to $360$. Moreover, we gave all the possible canonical degrees of $X$ if $X$ is an abelian cover over $\mathbb{P}^3$ and constructed all the examples with these canonical degrees.
We study the deformation theory of a Q-Fano 3-fold with only terminal singularities. First, we show that the Kuranishi space of a Q-Fano 3-fold is smooth. Second, we show that every Q-Fano 3-fold with only "ordinary" terminal singularities is Q-smoothable, that is, it can be deformed to a Q-Fano 3-fold with only quotient singularities. Finally, we prove Q-smoothability of a Q-Fano 3-fold assuming the existence of a Du Val anticanonical element. As an application, we get the genus bound for primary Q-Fano 3-folds with Du Val anticanonical elements.
We generalize the result of Kawamata concerning the strong version of Fujita's freeness conjecture for smooth 3-folds to some singular cases, namely, Gorenstein terminal singularities and quotient singularities of type 1/r(1,1,1) and of type 1/r(1,1,-1). We generalize furthermore the result of that to projective threefolds with only canonical singularities for canonical and not terminal singularities. It turns out that the estimates in the first three cases are better than the one for the smooth case, which it is not in the fourth case. We also give explicit examples which show the estimate in…
The concept of non-Gorenstein involutions on Calabi-Yau threefolds is a higher dimensional generalization of non-symplectic involutions on $K3$ surfaces. We present some elementary facts about Calabi-Yau threefolds with non-Gorenstein involutions. We give a classification of the Calabi-Yau threefolds of Picard rank one with non-Gorenstein involutions whose fixed locus is not zero-dimensional.
We obtain a combinatorial description of Gorenstein spherical Fano varieties in terms of certain polytopes, generalizing the combinatorial description of Gorenstein toric Fano varieties by reflexive polytopes and its extension to Gorenstein horospherical Fano varieties due to Pasquier. Using this description, we show that the rank of the Picard group of an arbitrary $d$-dimensional $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial Gorenstein spherical Fano variety is bounded by $2d$. This paper also contains an overview of the description of the natural representative of the anticanonical divisor class of a spherical va…
Seshadri constants, introduced by Demailly, measure the local positivity of a nef divisor at a point. In this paper, we compute the Seshadri constants of the anticanonical divisors of Fano manifolds with coindex at most $3$ at a very general point. As a consequence, if $X$ is a nonsingular Fano threefold which is very general in its deformation family, then $\varepsilon(X,-K_X;x)\leq 1$ for all points $x\in X$ if and only if $\vert-K_X\vert$ is not base point free.
Let $X$ be a Gorenstein minimal projective 3-fold with at worst locally factorial terminal singularities. Suppose the canonical map is of fiber type. Denote by $F$ a smooth model of a generic irreducible component in fibers of the canonical map of $X$ and so $F$ is a smooth curve or a smooth surface. The main result of the paper is that there is a computable constant $K$ (independent of $X$) such that $g(F)\leq 647$ or $p_g(F)\leq 38$ whenever $p_g(X)\geq K$. The method heavily relies on both a Noether type of inequality and a Miyaoka-Yau inequality and that is the reason we only treat a Goren…
Given a surface cyclic quotient singularity $Q\in Y$, it is an open problem to determine all smoothings of $Y$ that admit an anticanonical model and to compute it. In [HTU], Hacking, Tevelev, and Urzúa studied certain irreducible components of the versal deformation space of $Y$, and within these components, they found one parameter smoothings $\mathcal{Y} \to \mathbb{A}^1$ that admit an anticanonical model and proved that they have canonical singularities. Moreover, they compute explicitly the anticanonical models that have terminal singularities using Mori's division algorithm [M02]. We stud…
Building on the work of Nogin \cite{Nogin}, we prove that the braid group $B_4$ acts transitively on full exceptional collections of vector bundles on Fano threefolds with $b_2=1$ and $b_3=0$. Equivalently, this group acts transitively on the set of simple helices (considered up to a shift in the derived category) on such a Fano threefold. We also prove that on threefolds with $b_2=1$ and very ample anticanonical class, every exceptional coherent sheaf is locally free.
We classify simple flops on smooth threefolds, or equivalently, Gorenstein threefold singularities with irreducible small resolution. There are only six families of such singularities, distinguished by Koll{á}r's {\em length} invariant. The method is to apply invariant theory to Pinkham's construction of small resolutions. As a by-product, generators of the ring of invariants are given for the standard action of the Weyl group of each of the irreducible root systems.
For fixed degree $d\leq 12$, we study the Hilbert scheme of degree $d$ smooth Fano threefolds in their anticanonical embeddings. We use this to classify all possible degenerations of these varieties to toric Fano varieties with at most canonical Gorenstein singularities.
