We give a procedure to ``average'' canonically $C^1$-close Legendrian submanifolds of contact manifolds. As a corollary we obtain that, whenever a compact group action leaves a Legendrian submanifold almost invariant, there is an invariant Legendrian submanifold nearby.
This is a corrected version of our paper published in Osaka Journal of Mathematics 51(2014), 673-693. We correct Theorem~1.1, Proposition~3.3 and their proofs.
In this short note, we provide a criterion for DGA-homotopy of augmentations of Chekanov-Eliashberg algebra of disconnected Legendrian submanifolds. We apply the criterion to obtain the extension of geography results of Bourgeois and Galant concerning bilinearized Legendrian contact homology to the case of disconnected Legendrian submanifolds.
We prove a Seifert-van Kampen theorem for Legendrian submanifolds and exact Lagrangian cobordisms, and use it to calculate the change in the DGA caused by critical Legendrian ambient surgery.
In any contact manifold of dimension $2n-1\geq 11$, we construct examples of closed legendrian submanifolds which are not diffeomorphic but whose lagrangian cylinders in the symplectization are hamiltonian isotopic.
We are proposing Tulczyjew's triple for contact dynamics. The most important ingredients of the triple, namely symplectic diffeomorphisms, special symplectic manifolds, and Morse families, are generalized to the contact framework. These geometries permit us to determine so-called generating family (obtained by merging a special contact manifold and a Morse family) for a Legendrian submanifold. Contact Hamiltonian and Lagrangian Dynamics are recast as Legendrian submanifolds of the tangent contact manifold. In this picture, the Legendre transformation is determined to be a passage between two d…
Loose Legendrian n-submanifolds, for n at least 2, were introduced by Murphy and proved to be flexible in the h-principle sense: any two loose Legendrian submanifolds that are formally Legendrian isotopic are also actually Legendrian isotopic. Legendrian contact homology is a Floer theoretic invariant that associates a differential graded algebra (DGA) to a Legendrian submanifold. The DGA of a loose Legendrian submanifold is trivial.
Laudenbach and Sikorav proved that closed, half-dimensional non-Lagrangian submanifolds of symplectic manifolds are immediately displaceable as long as there is no topological obstruction. From this they deduced that the $C^0$-limit of a sequence of Lagrangian submanifolds of certain manifolds is again Lagrangian, provided that the limit is smooth. In this note we extend Laudenbach and Sikorav's ideas to contact manifolds. We prove correspondingly that certain non-Legendrian submanifolds of contact manifolds can be displaced immediately without creating short Reeb chords as long as there is no…
We investigate families of Legendrian submanifolds of 1-jet spaces by developing and applying a theory of families of generating family homologies. This theory allows us to detect an infinite family of loops of Legendrian n-spheres embedded in the standard contact (2n+1)-space (for n>1) that are contractible in the smooth, but not Legendrian, categories.
Unlike Legendrian submanifolds, the deformation problem of coisotropic submanifolds can be obstructed. Starting from this observation, we single out in the contact setting the special class of integral coisotropic submanifolds as the direct generalization of Legendrian submanifolds for what concerns deformation and moduli theory. Indeed, being integral coisotropic is proved to be a rigid condition, and moreover the integral coisotropic deformation problem is unobstructed with discrete moduli space.
We study the relation of an embedded Lagrangian cobordism between two closed, orientable Legendrian submanifolds of R^{2n+1}. More precisely, we investigate the behavior of the Thurston-Bennequin number and (linearized) Legendrian contact homology under this relation. The result about the Thurston-Bennequin number can be considered as a generalization of the result of Chantraine which holds when n = 1. In addition, we provide a few constructions of Lagrangian cobordisms and prove that there are infinitely many pairs of exact Lagrangian cobordant and not pairwise Legendrian isotopic Legendrian …
We focus on Legendrian submanifolds of the space of one-jets of functions, $J^1(\mathbb{R}^n,\mathbb{R})$. We are interested in processes - operations - that build new Legendrian submanifolds from old ones. We introduce in particular two operations, namely the sum and the convolution, which in some sense lift to $J^1(\mathbb{R}^n,\mathbb{R})$ the operations sum and infimal-convolution on functions that belong to convex analysis. We show that these operations fit well with the classical theory of generating functions. Finally, we refine this theory so that the min-max selector of generating fun…
We show that there is no positive loop inside the component of a fiber in the space of Legendrian embeddings in the contact manifold $ST^*M$, provided that the universal cover of $M$ is $\RM^n$. We consider some related results in the space of one-jets of functions on a compact manifold. We give an application to the positive isotopies in homogeneous neighborhoods of surfaces in a tight contact 3-manifold.
Contact homology for Legendrian submanifolds in standard contact $(2n+1)$-space is rigorously defined using moduli spaces of holomorphic disks with Lagrangian boundary conditions in complex $n$-space. It provides new invariants of Legendrian isotopy. Using these invariants the theory of Legendrian isotopy is shown to be very rich. For example, infinite families of pairwise non-isotopic Legendrian $n$-spheres and $n$-tori, which are indistinguishable by means of previously known invariants, are constructed. In a sense, the definition of contact homology presented in this paper is a high dimensi…
Let M be a compact symplectic manifold, and L be a closed Lagrangian submanifold which can be lifted to a Legendrian submanifold in the contactization of M. For any Legendrian deformation of L satisfying some given conditions, we get a new Lagrangian submanifold L'. We prove that the number of intersection of L and L' can be estimated from below by the sum of $Z_2$-Betti numbers of L, provided they intersect transversally.
In this article, we prove a Legendrian Whitney trick which allows for the removal of intersections between codimension-two contact submanifolds and Legendrian submanifolds, assuming such a smooth cancellation is possible. This technique is applied to show the existence h-principle for codimension-two contact embeddings with a prescribed contact structure.
In this paper we show that the singular locus of a Legendrian foliation as defined in [Hua13] is a compact submanifold whose connected components are of codimension at most two. As a consequence, given any closed $(n+1)$-dimensional coisotropic submanifold $W$ in a contact $(2n+1)$-manifold, the contact structure in a sufficiently small neighborhood of $W$ is uniquely determined by the characteristic (Legendrian) foliation.
By a result due to Ziltener, there exist no closed embedded Bohr-Sommerfeld Lagrangians inside $\mathbb CP^n$ for the prequantisation bundle whose total space is the standard contact sphere. On the other hand, any embedded monotone Lagrangian torus has a canonical nontrivial cover which is a Bohr-Sommerfeld immersion. We draw the front projections for the corresponding Legendrian lifts inside a contact Darboux ball of the threefold covers of both the two-dimensional Clifford and Chekanov tori (the former is the Legendrian link of the Harvey-Lawson special Lagrangian cone), and compute the asso…
In this note we study several aspects of coisotropic submanifolds of a contact manifold. In particular we give a structure theorem for the singularity of the characteristic foliation of a coisotropic submanifold. Moreover we establish the existence and uniqueness results of germs of contact structures near Legendrian foliations, which is a special case of coisotropic submanifold. This note can be thought of as an attempt to generalize the study of surfaces in three-dimensional contact geometry to higher dimensions.
One way to obtain invariants of some Legendrian submanifolds in 1-jet spaces $J^1M$, equipped with the standard contact structure, is through the Morse theoretic technique of generating families. This paper extends the invariant of generating family cohomology by giving it a product $μ_2$. To define the product, moduli spaces of flow trees are constructed and shown to have the structure of a smooth manifold with corners. These spaces consist of intersecting half-infinite gradient trajectories of functions whose critical points correspond to Reeb chords of the Legendrian. This paper lays the fo…
The technique of generating families produces obstructions to the existence of embedded Lagrangian cobordisms between Legendrian submanifolds in the symplectizations of 1-jet bundles. In fact, generating families may be used to construct a TQFT-like theory that, in addition to giving the aforementioned obstructions, yield structural information about invariants of Legendrian submanifolds. For example, the obstructions devised in this paper show that there is no generating family compatible Lagrangian cobordism between the Chekanov-Eliashberg Legendrian $m(5_2)$ knots. Further, the generating f…
We prove that the number of Reeb chords between a Legendrian submanifold and its contact Hamiltonian push-off is at least the sum of the $\mathbb{Z}_2$-Betti numbers of the submanifold, provided that the contact isotopy is sufficiently small when compared to the smallest Reeb chord on the Legendrian. Moreover, the established invariance enables us to use two different contact forms: one for the count of Reeb chords and another for the measure of the smallest length, under the assumption that there is a suitable symplectic cobordism from the latter to the former. The size of the contact isotopy…
Helmut Hofer introduced in '93 a novel technique based on holomorphic curves to prove the Weinstein conjecture. Among the cases where these methods apply are all contact 3--manifolds $(M,ξ)$ with $π_2(M) \ne 0$. We modify Hofer's argument to prove the Weinstein conjecture for some examples of higher dimensional contact manifolds. In particular, we are able to show that the connected sum with a real projective space always has a closed contractible Reeb orbit.
Given a chord-generic horizontally displaceable Legendrian submanifold $Λ\subset P\times \mathbb R$ with the property that its characteristic algebra admits a finite-dimensional matrix representation, we prove an Arnold-type lower bound for the number of Reeb chords on $Λ$. This result is a generalization of the results of Ekholm-Etnyre-Sullivan and Ekholm-Etnyre-Sabloff which hold for Legendrian submanifolds whose Chekanov-Eliashberg algebras admit augmentations. We also provide examples of Legendrian submanifolds $Λ$ of $\mathbb C^{n}\times \mathbb R$, $n \ge 1$, whose characteristic algebra…
We study Legendrian embeddings of a compact Legendrian submanifold $L$ sitting in a closed contact manifold $(M,ξ)$ whose contact structure is supported by a (contact) open book $\mathcal{OB}$ on $M$. We prove that if $\mathcal{OB}$ has Weinstein pages, then there exist a contact structure $ξ'$ on $M$, isotopic to $ξ$ and supported by $\mathcal{OB}$, and a contactomorphism $f:(M,ξ) \to (M,ξ')$ such that the image $f(L)$ of any such submanifold can be Legendrian isotoped so that it becomes disjoint from the closure of a page of $\mathcal{OB}$.
Y. Eliashberg and N. Mishachev introduced the notion of wrinkled embedding to show that any tangential homotopy can be approximated by a homotopy of topological embeddings with mild singularities. This concept plays an important role in Contact Topology: The loose legendrian h-principle of E. Murphy relies on wrinkled embeddings to manipulate the legendrian front. Similarly, the simplification of legendrian front singularities was proven by D. Álvarez-Gavela by defining the notion of wrinkled legendrian. This paper and its sequel generalise these ideas to general jet spaces. The main theorem i…
We construct positive loops of Legendrian submanifolds in several instances. In particular, we partially recover G. Liu's result stating that any loose Legendrian admits a positive loop, under some mild topological assumptions on the Legendrian. Moreover, we show contractibility of the constructed loops under an extra topological assumption.
We make the elementary observation that the Lagrangian submanifolds of $\mathbb{C}^n$, for each $n \ge 3$, constructed by Ekholm, Eliashberg, Murphy and Smith are non-uniruled and moreover have infinite relative Gromov width. The construction of these submanifolds use exact Lagrangian caps, which obviously are non-uniruled in themselves. This property is also used to show that if a Legendrian submanifold inside a 1-jet space admits an exact Lagrangian cap then its Legendrian contact homology DGA is acyclic.
We relate the version of rational Symplectic Field Theory for exact Lagrangian cobordisms introduced in [5] with linearized Legendrian contact homology. More precisely, if $L\subset X$ is an exact Lagrangian submanifold of an exact symplectic manifold with convex end $Λ\subset Y$, where $Y$ is a contact manifold and $Λ$ is a Legendrian submanifold, and if $L$ has empty concave end, then the linearized Legendrian contact cohomology of $Λ$, linearized with respect to the augmentation induced by $L$, equals the rational SFT of $(X,L)$. Following ideas of P. Seidel, this equality in combination wi…
We give a construction to obtain canonically an ``isotropic average'' of given $C^1$-close isotropic submanifolds of a symplectic manifold. To do so we use an improvement of Weinstein's submanifold averaging theorem (obtained in collaboration with H. Karcher) and apply ``Moser's trick''. We also present an application to Hamiltonian group actions.
This paper introduces two constructions of Legendrian submanifolds, called the Legendrian product and spinning, and computes their classical invariants, the Thurston-Bennequin invariant and the Maslov class, in R^{2n+1}. These constructions take two Legendrians K,L and returns a product K x L, they generalize other previous constructions in contact topology, such as frontspinning and hypercube tori, and are equivalent in R^{2n+1}. Interestingly, this construction relies upon the explicit embeddings of K,L and not their Legendrian isotopy classes.
A rigorous foundation for the contact homology of Legendrian submanifolds in a contact manifold of the form $P\times \R$ where $P$ is an exact symplectic manifold is established. The class of such contact manifolds include 1-jet spaces of smooth manifolds. As an application, contact homology is used to provide (smooth) isotopy invariants of submanifolds of $\R^n$ and, more generally, invariants of self transverse immersions into $\R^n$ up to restricted regular homotopies. When $n=3$, this application is the first step in extending and providing a contact geometric underpinning for the new knot…
Using the structural theorems developed in [Hua13], we study the deformation theory of coisotropic submanifolds in contact manifolds, under the assumption that the characteristic foliation is nonsingular. In the "middle" dimensions, we find an interesting relationship with foliation theory. Some elementary applications of contact geometry in foliation theory are explored.
Let $Λ, Λ'$ be a pair of closed Legendrian submanifolds in a closed contact manifold $(Y, ξ= Ker(α))$ related by a Legendrian cobordism $W\subset (\mathbb{C}\times Y, \tildeξ=Ker(-y dx +α))$. In this note, we show that in the hypertight setting, if $Λ$ intersects a closed, weakly exact or monotone pre-Lagrangian $P\subset Y$ for reasons of Floer homology, then so does $Λ'$.
This paper is an overview of the idea of using contact geometry to construct invariants of immersions and embeddings. In particular, it discusses how to associate a contact manifold to any manifold and a Legendrian submanifold to an embedding or immersion. We then discuss recent work that creates invariants of immersions and embeddings using the Legendrian contact homology of the associated Legendrian submanifold.
The Chekanov-Eliashberg dg-algebra is a holomorphic curve invariant associated to Legendrian submanifolds of a contact manifold. We extend the definition to Legendrian embeddings of skeleta of Weinstein manifolds. Via Legendrian surgery, the new definition gives direct proofs of wrapped Floer cohomology push-out diagrams. It also leads to a proof of a conjectured isomorphism between partially wrapped Floer cohomology and Chekanov-Eliashberg dg-algebras with coefficients in chains on the based loop space.
We establish a full $h-$principle ($C^0-$close, relative, parametric) for the simplification of singularities of Lagrangian and Legendrian fronts. More precisely, we prove that if there is no homotopy theoretic obstruction to simplifying the singularities of tangency of a Lagrangian or Legendrian submanifold with respect to an ambient foliation by Lagrangian or Legendrian leaves, then the simplification can be achieved by means of a Hamiltonian isotopy.
Embedded Lagrangian cobordisms between Legendrian submanifolds are produced from isotopy, spinning, and handle attachment constructions that employ the technique of generating families. Moreover, any Legendrian with a generating family has an immersed Lagrangian filling with a compatible generating family. These constructions are applied in several directions, in particular to a non-classical geography question: any graded group satisfying a duality condition can be realized as the generating family homology of a connected Legendrian submanifold in R^{2n+1} or in the 1-jet space of any compact…
In this paper we construct an $\mathcal{A}_\infty$-category associated to a Legendrian submanifold of jet spaces. Objects of the category are augmentations of the Chekanov algebra $\mathcal{A}(Λ)$ and the homology of the morphism spaces forms a new set of invariants of Legendrian submanifolds called the bilinearised Legendrian contact homology. Those are constructed as a generalisation of linearised Legendrian contact homology using two augmentations instead of one. Considering similar constructions with more augmentations leads to the higher order compositions map in the category and generali…
We extend the sutured framework to the case of Legendrians with boundary. Using ideas from Lagrangian Floer theory, we define the cylindrical and the wrapped sutured Legendrian homologies of a pair of sutured Legendrians. They fit together into an exact sequence, and the exact triangle is invariant along an Legendrian isotopy fixed at the boundary. For a single Legendrian, we also define a wrapped version of its Chekanov-Eliashberg dga. Our main example of sutured Legendrian is obtained via the unit conormal construction : a submanifold $N \subset M$, such that $\partial N \subset \partial M$ …
Sivek proves a "van Kampen" decomposition theorem for the combinatorial Legendrian contact algebra (also known as the Chekanov-Eliashberg algebra) of knots in standard contact $\R^3$ . We prove an analogous result for the holomorphic curve version of the Legendrian contact algebra of certain Legendrians submanifolds in standard contact $J^1(M).$ This includes all 1- and 2-dimensional Legendrians, and some higher dimensional ones. We present various applications including a Mayer-Vietoris sequence for linearized contact homology similar to Sivek's and a connect sum formula for the augmentation …
Positive loops of Legendrian embeddings are examined from the point of view of Floer homology of Lagrangian cobordisms. This leads to new obstructions to the existence of a positive loop containing a given Legendrian, expressed in terms of the Legendrian contact homology of the Legendrian submanifold. As applications, old and new examples of orderable contact manifolds are obtained and discussed. We also show that contact manifolds admitting a filling of a Liouville domain with non-zero symplectic homology is strongly orderable in the sense of Liu.
We introduce a Legendrian invariant built out of the Turaev torsion of generating families. This invariant is defined for a certain class of Legendrian submanifolds of 1-jet spaces, which we call of Euler type. We use our invariant to study mesh Legendrians: a family of 2-dimensional Euler type Legendrian links whose linking pattern is determined by a bicolored trivalent ribbon graph. The Turaev torsion of mesh Legendrians is related to a certain monodromy of handle slides, which we compute in terms of the combinatorics of the graph. As an application, we exhibit pairs of Legendrian links in t…
An exact Lagrangian submanifold $L$ in the symplectization of standard contact $(2n-1)$-space with Legendrian boundary $Σ$ can be glued to itself along $Σ$. This gives a Legendrian embedding $Λ(L,L)$ of the double of $L$ into contact $(2n+1)$-space. We show that the Legendrian isotopy class of $Λ(L,L)$ is determined by formal data: the manifold $L$ together with a trivialization of its complexified tangent bundle. In particular, if $L$ is a disk then $Λ(L,L)$ is the Legendrian unknot.
Let $L \subset Y$ be a Legendrian submanifold of a contact manifold, $S\subset L$ a framed embedded sphere bounding an isotropic disc $D_S \subset Y \setminus L$, and use $L_S$ to denote the manifold obtained from $L$ by a surgery on $S$. Given some additional conditions on $D_S$ we describe how to obtain a Legendrian embedding of $L_S$ into an arbitrarily small neighbourhood of $L \cup D_S \subset Y$ by a construction that we call Legendrian ambient surgery. In the case when the disc is subcritical, we produce an isomorphism of the Chekanov-Eliashberg algebra of $L_S$ with a version of the Ch…
We introduce and discuss notions of regularity and flexibility for Lagrangian manifolds with Legendrian boundary in Weinstein domains. There is a surprising abundance of flexible Lagrangians. In turn, this leads to new constructions of Legendrians submanifolds and Weinstein manifolds. For instance, many closed $n$-manifolds of dimension $n>2$ can be realized as exact Lagrangian submanifolds of $T^*S^n$ with possibly exotic Weinstein symplectic structures. These Weinstein structures on $T^* S^n$, infinitely many of which are distinct, are formed by a single handle attachment to the standard $2n…
