Let F_o be a non-archimedean locally compact field of residual characteristic not 2. Let G be a classical group over F_o (with no quaternionic algebra involved) which is not of type A_n for n>1. Let b be an element of the Lie algebra g of G that we assume semisimple for simplicity. Let H be the centralizer of b in G and h its Lie algebra. Let I and I_b denote the (enlarged) Bruhat-Tits buildings of G and H respectively. We prove that there is a natural set of maps j_b : I_b --> I which enjoy the following properties: they are affine, H-equivariant, map any apartment of I_b into an apartment of I and are compatible with the Lie algebra filtrations of g and h. In a particular case, where this set is reduced to one element, we prove that j_b is characterized by the last property in the list. We also prove a similar characterization result for the general linear group.
The moduli space for a flat G-bundle over the two-torus is completely determined by its holonomy representation. When G is compact, connected, and simply connected, we show that the moduli space is homeomorphic to a product of two tori mod the action of the Weyl group, or equivalently to the conjugacy classes of commuting pairs of elements in G. Since the component group for a non-simply connected group is given by some finite dimensional subgroup in the centralizer of an n-tuple, we use diagram automorphisms of the extended Dynkin diagram to prove properties of centralizers of pairs of elemen…
Suppose that a locally finite group $G$ has a $2$-element $g$ with Chernikov centralizer. It is proved that if the involution in $\langle g\rangle$ has nilpotent centralizer, then $G$ has a soluble subgroup of finite index.
Let G be an 1-connected simple Lie group, and let x\inG be a group element. We determine the isomorphism type of the centralizer C_{x} in term of a minimal geodesic joinning the group unit e\inG to x. This result is applied to classify the isomorphism types of maximal subgroups of maximal rank of G, and the isomorphism types of parabolic subgroups of G.
A finitely generated virtually free pro-p group with finite centralizers of its torsion elements is the free pro-p product of finite p-groups and a free pro-p factor.
Suppose $G$ is a finite group. The set of all centralizers of $2-$element subsets of $G$ is denoted by $2-Cent(G)$. A group $G$ is called $(2,n)-$centralizer if $|2-Cent(G)| = n$ and primitive $(2,n)-$centralizer if $|2-Cent(G)| = |2-Cent(\frac{G}{Z(G)})| = n$, where $Z(G)$ denotes the center of $G$. The aim of this paper is to present the main properties of $(2,n)-$centralizer groups among them a characterization of $(2,n)-$centralizer and primitive $(2,n)-$centralizer groups, $n \leq 9$, are given.
A second countable virtually free pro-p group all of whose torsion elements have finite centralizer is the free pro-p product of finite p-groups and a free pro-p factor.
We determine all finite subgroups of simple algebraic groups that have irreducible centralizers - that is, centralizers whose connected component does not lie in a parabolic subgroup.
A group $G$ is said to have restricted centralizers if for each $g$ in $G$ the centralizer $C_G(g)$ either is finite or has finite index in $G$. Shalev showed that a profinite group with restricted centralizers is virtually abelian. Given a set of primes $π$, we take interest in profinite groups with restricted centralizers of $π$-elements. It is shown that such a profinite group has an open subgroup of the form $P\times Q$, where $P$ is an abelian pro-$π$ subgroup and $Q$ is a pro-$π'$ subgroup. This significantly strengthens a result from our earlier paper.
In [H. Duan and S. Liu, The isomorphism type of the centralizer of an element in a Lie group, Journal of algebra, 376(2013), 25-45], we have determined the isomorphism type of the centralizer of an element in a simpe Lie group. As a sequel to [H. Duan and S. Liu, The isomorphism type of the centralizer of an element in a Lie group, Journal of algebra, 376(2013), 25-45.] we present a general procedure to calculate the isomorphism type of the fixed set of the inverse involution on a Lie group.
The article deals with profinite groups in which centralizers are virtually procyclic. Suppose that G is a profinite group such that the centralizer of every nontrivial element is virtually torsion-free while the centralizer of every element of infinite order is virtually procyclic. We show that G is either virtually pro-p for some prime p or virtually torsion-free procyclic. The same conclusion holds for profinite groups in which the centralizer of every nontrivial element is virtually procyclic; moreover, if G is not pro-p, then G has finite rank.
A group $G$ is said to be $n$-centralizer if its number of element centralizers $\mid \Cent(G)\mid=n$, an F-group if every non-central element centralizer contains no other element centralizer and a CA-group if all non-central element centralizers are abelian. For any non-abelian $n$-centralizer group $G$, we prove that $\mid \frac{G}{Z(G)}\mid \leq (n-2)^2$, if $n \leq 12$ and $\mid \frac{G}{Z(G)}\mid \leq 2(n-4)^{{log}_2^{(n-4)}}$ otherwise, which improves an earlier result. We prove that if $G$ is an arbitrary non-abelian $n$-centralizer F-group, then gcd$(n-2, \mid \frac{G}{Z(G)}\mid) \neq…
We describe the conjugacy classes of the elements of the free product of two groups and their centralizers and, as a consequence, we correct the calculation of the cyclic and periodic cyclic homology of the group ring of the free product of two groups given in a previous paper.
We classify closed abelian subgroups of the simple groups $G_2$, $F_4$, $Aut(so(8))$ having centralizer the same dimension as the dimension of the subgroup, as well as finite abelian subgroups of certain spin and half-spin groups having finite centralizer.
We show that an outer automorphism acts loxodromically on the cyclic splitting complex if and only if it has a filling lamination and no generic leaf of the lamination is carried by a vertex group of a cyclic splitting. This is the analog for the cyclic splitting complex of Handel-Mosher's theorem on loxodromics for the free splitting complex. We also show that such outer automorphisms have virtually cyclic centralizers.
The set of all centralizers of elements in a finite group $G$ is denoted by $Cent(G)$ and $G$ is called $n-$centralizer if $|Cent(G)| = n$. In this paper, the structure of centralizers in a non-abelian finite group $G$ with this property that $\frac{G}{Z(G)} \cong Z_{p^2} \rtimes Z_{p^2}$ is obtained. As a consequence, it is proved that such a group has exactly $[(p+1)^2+1]$ element centralizers and the structure of the commuting conjugacy class graph of $G$ is completely determined.
Given a finite group $G$, let $Cent(G)$ denote the set of distinct centralizers of elements of $G$. The group $G$ is called $n$-centralizer if $|Cent(G)|=n$ and primitive $n$-centralizer if $|Cent(G)|=|Cent(\frac{G}{Z(G)})|=n$. In this paper, we characterize the $9$-centralizer and the primitive $9$-centralizer groups.
Poly-free groups are constructed as iterated semidirect products of free groups. The class of poly-free groups includes the classical pure braid groups, fundamental groups of fiber-type hyperplane arrangements, and certain subgroups of the automorphism groups of free groups. The purpose of this article is to compute centralizers of certain natural Lie subalgebras of the Lie algebra obtained from the descending central series of poly-free groups G including some of the geometrically interesting classes of groups mentioned above. The main results here extend results of Cohen and Prassidis for su…
In this paper, we characterize finite group $G$ with unique proper non-abelian element centralizer. This improves \cite[Theorem 1.1]{nab}. Among other results, we have proved that if $C(a)$ is the proper non-abelian element centralizer of $G$ for some $a \in G$, then $\frac{C(a)}{Z(G)}$ is the Fitting subgroup of $\frac{G}{Z(G)}$, $C(a)$ is the Fitting subgroup of $G$ and $G' \in C(a)$, where $G'$ is the commutator subgroup of $G$.
The non-centralizer graph of a finite group $G$ is the simple graph $Υ_G$ whose vertices are the elements of $G$ with two vertices $x$ and $y$ are adjacent if their centralizers are distinct. The induced subgroup of $Υ_G$ associated with the vertex set $G\setminus Z(G)$ is called the induced non-centralizer graph of $G$. The notions of non-centralizer and induced non-centralizer graphs were introduced by Tolue in \cite{to15}. A finite group is called regular (resp. induced regular) if its non-centralizer graph (resp. induced non-centralizer graph) is regular. In this paper we study the structu…
Let G be an isotropic reductive algebraic group over a commutative ring R. Assume that, for any maximal ideal M of R, the rank of the relative root system of G_{R_M} is greater or equal than 2. We show that under this assumption the centralizer of E(R) in G(R) coincides with the abstract group-theoretic center of G(R) and with Cent(G)(R). This generalizes a result of E. Abe and J. Hurley.
The normalizer $N_W(W_J)$ of a standard parabolic subgroup $W_J$ of a finite Coxeter group $W$ splits over the parabolic subgroup with complement $N_J$ consisting of certain minimal length coset representatives of $W_J$ in $W$. In this note we show that (with the exception of a small number of cases arising from a situation in Coxeter groups of type $D_n$) the centralizer $C_W(w)$ of an element $w \in W$ is in a similar way a semidirect product of the centralizer of $w$ in a suitable small parabolic subgroup $W_J$ with complement isomorphic to the normalizer complement $N_J$.
Every finite non-abelian group of order $n$ has a non-central element whose centralizer has order exceeding $n^{1/3}$. The proof does not rely on the classification of finite simple groups, yet it uses the Feit-Thompson theorem.
A subset X of a group G is a set of pairwise non-commuting ele- ments if ab 6= ba for any two distinct elements a and b in X. If jXj ? jY j for any other set of pairwise non-commuting elements Y in G, then X is said to be a maximal subset of pairwise non-commuting elements and the cardinality of such a subset is denoted by !(G). In this paper, among other thing, we prove that, for each positive integer n, there are only finitely many groups G, up to isoclinic, with !(G) = n (with exactly n centralizers).
Order three elements in the exceptional groups of type G2 are classified up to conjugation over arbitrary fields. Their centralizers are computed, and the associated classification of idempotents in symmetric composition algebras is obtained. Idempotents have played a key role in the study and classification of these algebras. Over an algebraically closed field, there are two conjugacy classes of order three elements in G2 in characteristic not 3 and four of them in characteristic 3. The centralizers in characteristic 3 fail to be smooth for one of these classes.
A finite group $G$ is called an F-group if for every $x, y \in G \setminus Z(G)$, $C(x) \leq C(y)$ implies that $C(x) = C(y)$. On the otherhand, two elements of a group are said to be $z$-equivalent or in the same $z$-class if their centralizers are conjugate in the group. In this paper, for a finite group, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for the number of centralizers/ $z$-classes to be equal to the index of its center. We also give a necessary and sufficient condition for the number of $z$-classes of a finite F-group to attain its maximal number (which extends an earlier result).…
Let $G$ be an algebraic group of type $G_2$ over a field $k$ of characteristic $\neq 2,3$. In this paper we calculate centralizers of semisimple elements in anisotropic $G_2$. Using these, we show explicitly that there are six conjugacy classes of centralizers in the compact real form of $G_2$.
For a CSA group $G$ and a wide class of abelian groups $A$ we give an explicit construction for the tensor $A$-completion of $G$ using free products with amalgamations. We apply the obtained results to the study of basic properties of $A$-free groups. In particular, canonical and reduced forms of elements in $A$-free groups are introduced, and then commuting and conjugate elements are described.
Let G be a simple algebraic group over an algebraically closed field with Lie algebra g. Then the orbits of nilpotent elements of g under the adjoint action of G have been classified. We describe a simple algorithm for finding a representative of a nilpotent orbit. We use this to compute lists of representatives of these orbits for the Lie algebras of exceptional type. Then we give two applications. The first one concerns settling a conjecture by Elashvili on the index of centralizers of nilpotent orbits, for the case where the Lie algebra is of exceptional type. The second deals with minimal …
Let X and Y be commuting nilpotent K-endomorphisms of a vector space V, where K is a field of characteristic p >= 0. If F=K(t) is the field of rational functions on the projective line, consider the K(t)-endomorphism A=X+tY of V. If p=0, or if the (p-1)-st power of A is 0, we show here that X and Y are tangent to the unipotent radical of the centralizer of A in GL(V). For all geometric points (a:b) of a suitable open subset of the projective line, it follows that X and Y are tangent to the unipotent radical of the centralizer of aX+bY. This answers a question of J. Pevtsova.
Let G be a group. Two elements x and y in G are said to be in the same z-class if their centralizers in G are conjugate within G. In this paper, we prove that the number of z-classes in the group of upper triangular matrices is infinite provided that the field is infinite and size of the matrices is at least 6, and finite otherwise.
We explore when generator-conjugate homomorphisms are conjugate and when element-conjugate homomorphisms are conjugate from abelian or dihedral groups to the symmetric group. We completely determine when such homomorphisms are conjugate in the case where the source group has two generators by studying centralizer actions in the target group.
For any group G, let C(G) denote the intersection of the normal- izers of centralizers of all elements of G. Set C0 = 1. Define Ci+1(G)=Ci(G) = C(G=Ci(G)) for i ? 0. By C1(G) denote the terminal term of the ascending series. In this paper, we show that a finitely generated group G is nilpotent if and only if G = Cn(G) for some positive integer n.
Let $G$ be a finite group. A coprime commutator in $G$ is any element that can be written as a commutator $[x,y]$ for suitable $x,y\in G$ such that $π(x)\capπ(y)=\emptyset$. Here $π(g)$ denotes the set of prime divisors of the order of the element $g\in G$. An anti-coprime commutator is an element that can be written as a commutator $[x,y]$, where $π(x)=π(y)$. The main results of the paper are as follows. -- If $|x^G|\leq n$ whenever $x$ is a coprime commutator, then $G$ has a nilpotent subgroup of $n$-bounded index. -- If $|x^G|\leq n$ for every anti-coprime commutator $x\in G$, then $G$ has …
The mixed braid groups are the subgroups of Artin braid groups whose elements preserve a given partition of the base points. We prove that the centralizer of any braid can be expressed in terms of semidirect and direct products of mixed braid groups. Then we construct a generating set of the centralizer of any braid on n strands, which has at most k(k+1)/2 elements if n=2k, and at most $k(k+3)/2 elements if n=2k+1. These bounds are shown to be sharp, due to work of N.V.Ivanov and of S.J.Lee. Finally, we describe how one can explicitly compute this generating set.
Let $Γ$ be a torsion free discrete group acting cocompactly on a two dimensional euclidean building $Δ$. The centralizer of an element of $Γ$ is either a Bieberbach group or is described by a finite graph of finite cyclic groups. Explicit examples are computed, with $Δ$ of type $\widetilde A_2$.
This notes are additional remarks to an article of Broussous and Stevens [arXiv:math/0402228v1]. We consider a unitary group G over a non-Archimedean local field k_0 of residue characteristic different from two and an element β of the Lie algebra \mf{g} of G. Let H be the centralizer of β in G. We further assume k_0[β] to be semisimple. We prove that there is an affine H-equivariant map between the Bruhat-Tits buildings B(H)\ra B(G) which is compatible with the Lie-algebra filtrations (CLF) and maps apartments into apartments. The map is toral if β is separable. For simplicity let us now assum…
For a positive integer r we prove that if G is a profinite group in which the centralizer of every nontrivial element has rank at most r, then G is either a pro-p group or a group of finite rank. Further, if G is not virtually a pro-p group, then G is virtually of rank at most r+1.
Let $G$ be a split reductive algebraic group defined over a complete discrete valuation ring $\mathbb{O}$, with residue field $\mathbb{F}$ and fraction field $\mathbb{K}$, where the fiber $G_{\mathbb{F}}$ is geometrically standard. A balanced nilpotent section $x \in \text{Lie}(G)$ can roughly be thought of as an $\mathbb{O}$-point in a $\mathbb{K}$ nilpotent orbit such that the corresponding orbits over $\mathbb{K}$ and $\mathbb{F}$ have the same Bala--Carter label. In this paper, we will establish a number of results on the structure of the centralizer $G^x \subseteq G$ of $x$. This includes…
Let G be a semisimple algebraic group over a field K whose characteristic is very good for G, and let sigma be any G-equivariant isomorphism from the nilpotent variety to the unipotent variety; the map sigma is known as a Springer isomorphism. Let y in G(K), let Y in Lie(G)(K), and write C_y = C_G(y) and C_Y= C_G(Y) for the centralizers. We show that the center of C_y and the center of C_Y are smooth group schemes over K. The existence of a Springer isomorphism is used to treat the crucial cases where y is unipotent and where Y is nilpotent. Now suppose G to be quasisplit, and write C for the …
A group $G$ is said to have restricted centralizers if for each $g \in G$ the centralizer $C_G(g)$ either is finite or has finite index in $G$. Shalev showed that a profinite group with restricted centralizers is virtually abelian. We take interest in profinite groups with restricted centralizers of uniform commutators, that is, elements of the form $[x_1,\dots,x_k]$, where $π(x_1)=π(x_2)=\dots=π(x_k)$. Here $π(x)$ denotes the set of prime divisors of the order of $x\in G$. It is shown that such a group necessarily has an open nilpotent subgroup. We use this result to deduce that $γ_k(G)$ is f…
The role of finite centralizers of involutions in pseudo-finite groups is analyzed. It is shown that a pseudo-finite group admitting a definable involutory automorphism fixing only finitely many elements is finite-by-abelian-by-finite. As a consequence, we give a model-theoretic proof of a result for periodic groups due to Hartley and Meixner. Furthermore, it is shown that any pseudo-finite group has an infinite abelian subgroup.
Let $q$ be a prime, $n$ a positive integer and $A$ an elementary abelian group of order $q^r$ with $r\geq2$ acting on a finite $q'$-group $G$. The following results are proved. We show that if all elements in $γ_{r-1}(C_G(a))$ are $n$-Engel in $G$ for any $a\in A^\#$, then $γ_{r-1}(G)$ is $k$-Engel for some $\{n,q,r\}$-bounded number $k$, and if, for some integer $d$ such that $2^d\leq r-1$, all elements in the $d$th derived group of $C_G(a)$ are $n$-Engel in $G$ for any $a\in A^\#$, then the $d$th derived group $G^{(d)}$ is $k$-Engel for some $\{n,q,r\}$-bounded number $k$. Assuming $r\geq 3$…
We classify closed abelian subgroups of a compact simple Lie group of adjoint type and of type E having centralizer of the same dimension as the dimension of the subgroup and describe Weyl groups of maximal abelian subgroups.
We classify abelian subgroups of the automorphism group of any compact simple Lie algebra whose centralizer has the same dimension as the dimension of the subgroup. This leads to a classification of the maximal abelian subgroups of compact simple groups of adjoint type and a classification of the fine group gradings of complex simple Lie algebras.
We give a new method to compute the centralizer of an element in Artin braid groups and, more generally, in Garside groups. This method, together with the solution of the conugacy problem given by the authors in a previous paper, are two main steps for solving conjugacy systems, thus breaking recently discovered cryptosystems based in braid groups. We also present the result of our computations, where we notice that our algorithm yields surprisingly small generating sets for the centralizers.
We show that, for any given subgroup $H$ of a finite group $G$, the Quillen poset $\mathcal{A}_p(G)$ of nontrivial elementary abelian $p$-subgroups, is obtained from $\mathcal{A}_p(H)$ by attaching elements via their centralizers in $H$. We use this idea to study Quillen's conjecture, which asserts that if $\mathcal{A}_p(G)$ is contractible then $G$ has a nontrivial normal $p$-subgroup. We prove that the original conjecture is equivalent to the $\mathbb{Z}$-acyclic version of the conjecture (obtained by replacing contractible by $\mathbb{Z}$-acyclic). We also work with the $\mathbb{Q}$-acyclic…
Given a permutational wreath product sequence of cyclic groups of prime order we research a commutator width of such groups and some properties of its commutator subgroup. Commutator width of Sylow 2-subgroups of alternating group $A_{2^{k}}$, permutation group $S_{2^k}$ and $C_p \wr B$ were founded. The result of research was extended on subgroups $(Syl_2 {A_{2^k}})'$, $p>2$. The paper presents a construction of commutator subgroup of Sylow 2-subgroups of symmetric and alternating groups. Also minimal generic sets of Sylow 2-subgroups of $A_{2^k}$ were founded. Elements presentation of $(Syl_…
Let n be bigger than 1 and let A be an element in the Higman-Thompson group V_n. We study the structure of the centralizer of a in V_n through a careful analysis of the action of the group generated by A on the Cantor set C. We make use of revealing tree pairs as developed by Brin and Salazar from which we derive discrete train tracks to assist us in our analysis. A consequence of our structure theorem is that centralizers are finitely generated. Along the way we give a short argument using revealing tree pairs which shows that cyclic groups are undistorted in V_n.
