We show that, for any given subgroup $H$ of a finite group $G$, the Quillen poset $\mathcal{A}_p(G)$ of nontrivial elementary abelian $p$-subgroups, is obtained from $\mathcal{A}_p(H)$ by attaching elements via their centralizers in $H$. We use this idea to study Quillen's conjecture, which asserts that if $\mathcal{A}_p(G)$ is contractible then $G$ has a nontrivial normal $p$-subgroup. We prove that the original conjecture is equivalent to the $\mathbb{Z}$-acyclic version of the conjecture (obtained by replacing contractible by $\mathbb{Z}$-acyclic). We also work with the $\mathbb{Q}$-acyclic (strong) version of the conjecture, reducing its study to extensions of direct products of simple groups of order divisible by $p$ and $p$-rank at least $2$. This allows to extend results of Aschbacher-Smith and to establish the strong conjecture for groups of $p$-rank at most $4$.
We give a new proof of Quillen's conjecture for solvable groups via a geometric and explicit method. For p-solvable groups, we provide both a new proof using the Classification of Finite Simple Groups and an asymptotic version without employing it.
Let $G$ be a finite group and $\mathcal{A}_p(G)$ be the poset of nontrivial elementary abelian $p$-subgroups of $G$. Quillen conjectured that $O_p(G)$ is nontrivial if $\mathcal{A}_p(G)$ is contractible. We prove that $O_p(G)\neq 1$ for any group $G$ admitting a $G$-invariant acyclic $p$-subgroup complex of dimension $2$. In particular, it follows that Quillen's conjecture holds for groups of $p$-rank $3$. We also apply this result to establish Quillen's conjecture for some particular groups not considered in the seminal work of Aschbacher--Smith.
We generalize an earlier result of Segev, which shows that {\em some\/} component in a minimal counterexample to Quillen's conjecture must admit an outer automorphism. We show in fact that {\em every\/} component must admit an outer automorphism. Thus we transform his restriction-result on components to an elimination-result: namely one which excludes any component which does not admit an outer automorphism. Indeed we show that the outer automorphisms admitted must include $p$-outers: that is, outer automorphisms of order divisible by $p$. This gives stronger, concrete eliminations: for exampl…
We introduce {\em admissible collections} for a finite group $G$ and use them to prove that most of the finite classical groups in non-defining characteristic satisfy the {\em Quillen dimension at $p$ property}, a strong version of Quillen's conjecture, at a given odd prime divisor $p$ of $|G|$. Compared to the methods in \cite{AS1993}, our techniques are simpler.
Let $G$ be a locally finite group and $F(G)$ the Hirsch--Plotkin radical of $G$. Denote by $S$ the full inverse image of the generalized Fitting subgroup of $G/F(G)$ in $G$. Assume that there is a number $k$ such that the length of every chain of nested centralizers in $G$ does not exceed $k$. The Borovik--Khukhro conjecture states, in particular, that under this assumption the quotient $G/S$ contains an abelian subgroup of index bounded in terms of $k$. We disprove this statement and prove some its weaker analog.
We extend the Main Theorem of Aschbacher and Smith on Quillen's Conjecture from $p>5$ to the remaining odd primes $p = 3,5$. In the process, we develop further combinatorial and homotopical methods for studying the poset of nontrivial elementary abelian $p$-subgroups of a finite group. The techniques lead to a number of further results on the Conjecture, often reducing dependence on the CFSG; in particular, we also provide some partial results toward the case of $p=2$.
We investigate the representation of a symmetric group $S_n$ on the homology of its Quillen complex at a prime $p$. For homology groups in small codimension, we derive an explicit formula for this representation in terms of the representations of symmetric groups on homology groups of $p$-uniform hypergraph matching complexes. We conjecture an explicit formula for the representation of $S_n$ on the top homology group of the corresponding hypergraph matching complex when $n \equiv 1 \bmod p$. Our conjecture follows from work of Bouc when $p=2$, and we prove the conjecture when $p=3$.
Monod introduced in [14] a family of Thompson-like groups which provides natural counterexamples to the von Neumann-Day conjecture. We construct a characterization of conjugacy and invariant and use them to compute centralizers in one group of this family.
The goal of this paper is to construct examples of centralizers in the Artin braid groups requiring the number of generators quadratic in the number of strings. These examples disprove a recent conjecture of N. Franco and J. Gonzalez-Meneses.
Coclass theory can be used to define infinite families of finite p-groups of a fixed coclass. It is conjectured that the groups in one of these infinite families all have isomorphic mod-p cohomology rings. Here we prove that almost all groups in one of these infinite families have equivalent Quillen categories. We also show how the Quillen categories of the groups in an infinite family are connected to the Quillen category of their associated infinite pro-p-group of finite coclass.
For any group G, let C(G) denote the set of centralizers of G. We say that a group G has n centralizers (G is a Cn-group) if |C(G)| = n. In this note, we prove that every finite Cn-group with n ? 21 is soluble and this estimate is sharp. Moreover, we prove that every finite Cn-group with |G| < 30n+15 19 is non-nilpotent soluble. This result gives a partial answer to a conjecture raised by A. Ashrafi in 2000.
Let p be a prime number, G a finite group, and A a finite group acting on G. The Brown poset of nonidentity p-subgroups of G is then an A-poset. We investigate the equivariant subposet and the equivariant Euler characteristics and establish a global relation between locally defined Euler characteristics and the number of p-elements of G centralized by A. It is a consequence of this relation that the equivariant version of Brown's theorem holds: The reduced Euler characteristic of the A-equivariant Brown poset is divisible by the p-part of the order of the centralizer of A. The second equivaria…
We state a conjecture about centralizers of certain roots of central elements in braid groups, and check it for Artin braid groups and some other cases. Our proof makes use of results by Birman-Ko-Lee; we give a new intrinsic account of these results.
We show that the refinement of Alperin's Conjecture proposed in "Frobenius Categories versus Brauer Blocks", Progress in Math. 274, can be proved by checking that this refinement holds on any central k*-extension of a finite group H containing a normal simple group S with trivial centralizer in H and p'-cyclic quotient H/S. This paper improves our result in [ibidem, Theorem 16.45] and repairs some bad arguments there.
In this short note we confirm a conjecture of James Wiegold. We prove that if $G$ is a finite $p$-group and $|G'|>p^{n(n-1)/2}$ for some non-negative integer $n$, then the group $G$ can be generated by the elements of breadth at least $n$. The breadth $b(x)$ of an element $x$ of a finite $p$-group $G$ is defined by the equation $|G:C_G(x)| = p^{b(x)}$, where $C_G(x)$ is the centralizer of $x$ in $G$.
Letting $G=F/R$ be a finitely-presented group, Hopf's formula expresses the second integral homology of $G$ in terms of $F$ and $R$. Expanding on previous work, we explain how to find generators of $H_2(G;\mathbb{F}_p)$. The context of the problem, which is related to a conjecture of Quillen, is presented, as well as example calculations.
In this work we discuss whether the non-commuting graph of a finite group can determine its nilpotency. More precisely, Abdollahi, Akbari and Maimani conjectured that if $G$ and $H$ are finite groups with isomorphic non-commuting graphs and $G$ is nilpotent, then $H$ must be nilpotent as well (Conjecture 2). We pose a new conjecture (Conjecture 3) that, together with the assumption $|Z(G)|\geq|Z(H)|$, implies Conjecture 2 and we prove it for groups in which all centralizers of non-central elements are abelian.
In recent papers we have refined a conjecture of Lehrer and Solomon expressing the characters of a finite Coxeter group $W$ afforded by the homogeneous components of its Orlik-Solomon algebra as sums of characters induced from linear characters of centralizers of elements of $W$. Our refined conjecture also relates the Orlik-Solomon characters above to the terms of a decomposition of the regular character of $W$ related to the descent algebra of $W$. A consequence of our conjecture is that both the regular character of $W$ and the character of the Orlik-Solomon algebra have parallel, graded de…
We prove that Artin groups from a class containing all large-type Artin groups are systolic. This provides a concise yet precise description of their geometry. Immediate consequences are new results concerning large-type Artin groups: biautomaticity; existence of $EZ$-boundaries; the Novikov conjecture; descriptions of finitely presented subgroups, of virtually solvable subgroups, and of centralizers for infinite order elements; the Burghelea conjecture; existence of low-dimensional models for classifying spaces for some families of subgroups.
A finite group $G$ is a CG-group if $|{\rm Cent}(G) | = | G' |+2$, where $G'$ is the commutator subgroup and Cent$(G)$ is the set of distinct element centralizers of $G$. In this paper we give some results on CG-groups. We also give a negative answer to \cite[Conjecture 2.3]{con} given by K. Khoramshahi and M. Zarrin.
In this article, we study the elements with disconnected centralizer in the Brauer complex associated to a simple algebraic group G defined over a finite field with corresponding Frobenius map F and derive the number of F-stable semisimple classes of G with disconnected centralizer when the order of the fundamental group has prime order. We also discuss extendibility of semisimple characters to their inertia group in the full automorphism group. As a consequence, we prove that "twisted" and "untwisted" simple groups of type E_6 are "good" in defining characteristic, which is a contribution to …
In this paper we study some combinatorial aspects of the singular Artin monoids. Firstly, we show that a singular Artin monoid $SA$ can be presented as a semidirect product of a graph monoid with its associated Artin group $A$. Such a decomposition implies that a singular Artin monoid embeds in a group. Secondly, we give a solution to the word problem for the FC type singular Artin monoids. Afterwards, we show that FC type singular Artin monoids have the FRZ property. Briefly speaking, this property says that the centralizer in $SA$ of any non-zero power of a standard singular generator $τ_s$ …
We prove the Arad-Herzog conjecture for various families of finite simple groups- if A and B are nontrivial conjugacy classes, then AB is not a conjugacy class. We also prove that if G is a finite simple group of Lie type and A and B are nontrivial conjugacy classes, either both semisimple or both unipotent, then AB is not a conjugacy class. We also prove a strong version of the Arad-Herzog conjecture for simple algebraic groups and in particular show that almost always the product of two conjugacy classes in a simple algebraic group consists of infinitely many conjugacy classes. As a conseque…
We study H^*(P), the mod p cohomology of a finite p--group P, viewed as an Out(P)--module. In particular, we study the conjecture, first considered by Martino and Priddy, that, if e_S in Z/p[Out(P)] is a primitive idempotent associated to an irreducible Z/p[Out(P)]--module S, then the Krull dimension of e_SH^*(P) equals the rank of P. The rank is an upper bound by Quillen's work, and the conjecture can be viewed as the statement that every irreducible Z/p[Out(P)]--module occurs as a composition factor in H^*(P) with similar frequency. In summary, our results are as follows. A strong form of th…
We show that an old conjecture of A.A. Suslin characterizing the image of a Hurewicz map from Quillen K-theory in degree $n$ to Milnor K-theory in degree $n$ admits an interpretation in terms of unstable ${\mathbb A}^1$-homotopy sheaves of the general linear group. Using this identification, we establish Suslin's conjecture in degree $5$ for infinite fields having characteristic unequal to $2$ or $3$. We do this by linking the relevant unstable ${\mathbb A}^1$-homotopy sheaf of the general linear group to the stable ${\mathbb A}^1$-homotopy of motivic spheres.
In a recent paper we claimed that both the group algebra of a finite Coxeter group $W$ as well as the Orlik-Solomon algebra of $W$ can be decomposed into a sum of induced one-dimensional representations of centralizers, one for each conjugacy class of elements of $W$, and gave a uniform proof of this claim for symmetric groups. In this note we outline an inductive approach to our conjecture. As an application of this method, we prove the inductive version of the conjecture for finite Coxeter groups of rank up to 2.
We refine a conjecture by Lehrer and Solomon on the structure of the Orlik-Solomon algebra of a finite Coxeter group $W$ and relate it to the descent algebra of $W$. As a result, we claim that both the group algebra of $W$, as well as the Orlik-Solomon algebra of $W$ can be decomposed into a sum of induced one-dimensional representations of element centralizers, one for each conjugacy class of elements of $W$. We give a uniform proof of the claim for symmetric groups. In addition, we prove that a relative version of the conjecture holds for every pair $(W, W_L)$, where $W$ is arbitrary and $W_…
In recent papers we have refined a conjecture of Lehrer and Solomon expressing the character of a finite Coxeter group $W$ acting on the $p$th graded component of its Orlik-Solomon algebra as a sum of characters induced from linear characters of centralizers of elements of $W$. Our refined conjecture relates the character above to a component of a decomposition of the regular character of $W$ related to Solomon's descent algebra of $W$. The refined conjecture has been proved for symmetric and dihedral groups, as well as finite Coxeter groups of rank three and four. In this paper, the second in…
Let k be a separably closed field. Let G be a reductive algebraic k-group. In this paper, we study Serre's notion of complete reducibility of subgroups of G over k. In particular, using the recently proved center conjecture of Tits, we show that the centralizer of a k-subgroup H of G is G-completely reducible over k if it is reductive and H is G-completely reducible over k. We also show that a regular reductive k-subgroup of G is G-completely reducible over k. Various open problems concerning complete reducibility are discussed. We present examples where the number of overgroups of irreducible…
The Benson-Solomon systems comprise a one-parameter family of simple exotic fusion systems at the prime $2$. The results we prove give significant additional evidence that these are the only simple exotic $2$-fusion systems, as conjectured by Solomon. We consider a saturated fusion system $\mathcal{F}$ having an involution centralizer with a component $\mathcal{C}$ isomorphic to a Benson-Solomon fusion system, and we show under rather general hypotheses that $\mathcal{F}$ cannot be simple. Furthermore, we prove that if $\mathcal{F}$ is almost simple with these properties, then $\mathcal{F}$ is…
