Following P. M. H. Wilson's paper on sectional curvatures of Kahler moduli, we consider a natural Riemannian metric on a hypersurface f=1 in a real vector space, defined using the Hessian of a homogeneous polynomial f. We give examples to answer a question by Wilson about when this metric has nonpositive curvature.
Also, we exhibit a large class of polynomials f on R^3 such that the associated metric has constant negative curvature. Dubrovin found another such polynomial on R^3, the Maschke sextic. We ask if these examples are the only ones with constant negative curvature, and we prove some partial results. This question is related both to the WDVV equations from string theory and to the "Clebsch covariant" from 19th-century invariant theory.
We prove that, in dimensions greater than 2, the generic metric is not a Hessian metric and find a curvature condition on Hessian metrics in dimensions greater than 3. In particular we prove that the forms used to define the Pontryagin classes in terms of the curvature vanish on a Hessian manifold. By contrast all analytic Riemannian 2-metrics are Hessian metrics.
We give a complete classification of 1-dimensional exponential families $\mathcal{E}$ defined over a finite space $Ω=\{x_{0}, ...,x_{n}\}$ whose Hessian scalar curvature is constant. We observe an interesting phenomenon: if $\mathcal{E}$ has constant Hessian scalar curvature, say $λ$, then $λ=\tfrac{2}{k}$ for some positive integer $k\leq m$. We also discuss the central role played by the binomial distribution in this classification.
In this paper, we establish a curvature estimate for semi-convex solutions of Hessian equations in hyperbolic space. We also obtain a curvature estimate for admissible solutions to prescribed curvature measure type problem in hyperbolic space. A crucial ingredient in both estimates is a concavity inequality for Hessian operator.
This paper establishes the global curvature estimate for the $n-2$ curvature equation with the general right hand side which partially solves this longstanding problem.
In this paper, we derive a priori interior Hessian estimates for Lagrangian mean curvature equation if the Lagrangian phase is supercritical and has bounded second derivatives.

We establish integral formulas and sharp two-sided bounds for the Ricci curvature, mean curvature and second fundamental form on a Riemannian manifold with boundary. As applications, sharp gradient and Hessian estimates are derived for the Dirichlet and Neumann eigenfunctions.
Guan-Ren-Wang established the curvature estimate of convex hypersurface satisfying the Weingarten curvature equation $σ_{k}(κ(X)) = f(X,ν(X))$. In this note, we give a simple proof of this result.
In this paper, we discuss the more general Hessian inequality $σ_{k}^{\frac{1}{k}}(λ(D_i (A\left(|Du|\right) D_j u)))\geq f(u)$ including the Laplacian, p-Laplacian, mean curvature, Hessian, k-mean curvature operators, and provide a necessary and sufficient condition on the global solvability, which can be regarded as generalized Keller-Osserman conditions.
We show that a statistical manifold manifold of a constant non-zero curvature can be realised as a level line of Hessian potential on a Hessian cone. We construct a Sasakian structure on $TM\times\R$ by a statistical manifold manifold of a constant non-zero curvature on $M$. By a statistical Lie algebra of a constant non-zero Lie algebra we construct a l.c.K Lie algebra.
We establish variational formulas for Ricci upper and lower bounds, as well as a derivative formula for the Ricci curvature. As applications, constant curvature manifolds, Einstein manifolds and Ricci parallel manifolds are identified, respectively, with different integral-differential formulas and semigroup inequalities. Moreover, by using derivative and Hessian formulas for the heat semigroup $P_t$ developed from stochastic analysis, explicit Hessian estimates are derived on Einstein and Ricci parallel manifolds.
We study the Hessian geometry of toric multi-Taub-NUT metrics and their phase change phenomena via the images of their moment maps. This generalizes an earlier paper on toric Gibbons-Hawking metrics.
In this paper, we propose a coupled system of complex Hessian equations which generalizes the equation for constant scalar curvature Kähler (cscK) metrics. We show this system can be realized variationally as the Euler-Lagrange equation of a Hessian version of the Mabuchi K-energy in an infinite dimensional space of $k$-Hessian potentials, which can be seen as an infinite dimensional Riemannian manifold with negative sectional curvature. Finally, we prove an a priori $C^0$-estimate for this system which depends on the Entropy, which generalizes a fundamental result of Chen and Cheng for cscK m…
Let $Δ$ be a 2-sphere endowed with an affine structure away from a finite set of points $P \subset Δ$, and assume that the monodromy of the associated connection $\nabla$ on $Δ\setminus P$ around any point from $P$ is unipotent. I show that there exists a pseudo-metric tensor with distribution coefficients on $Δ$ that is non-degenerate on $Δ\setminus P$ and that locally is of the form $\nabla d f$ for some convex function $f$. In particular, if $X_\infty$ is the canonical nearby fibre of a Type III degeneration of K3 surfaces in Kulikov form, $Δ_X \cong S^2$ is the dual intersection complex of…
We propose to study the Hessian metric of a functional on the space of probability measures endowed with the Wasserstein $2$-metric. We name it transport Hessian metric, which contains and extends the classical Wasserstein-$2$ metric. We formulate several dynamical systems associated with transport Hessian metrics. Several connections between transport Hessian metrics and mathematical physics equations are discovered. E.g., the transport Hessian gradient flow, including Newton's flow, formulates a mean-field kernel Stein variational gradient flow; The transport Hessian Hamiltonian flow of Bolt…
We address some fundamental questions concerning geometric analysis on Riemannian manifolds. It has been asked whether the $L^p$-Calderón-Zygmund inequalities extend to a reasonable class of non-compact Riemannian manifolds without the assumption of a positive injectivity radius. In the present paper, we give a positive answer for $1<p<2$ under the natural assumption of a lower bound on the Ricci curvature. For $p>2$, we complement the study in Güneysu-Pigola (2015) and derive sufficient geometric criteria for the validity of the Calderón-Zygmund inequality by adding Kato class bounds on the R…
We consider self-similar solutions to mean curvature evolution of entire Lagrangian graphs. When the Hessian of the potential function $u$ has eigenvalues strictly uniformly between -1 and 1, we show that on the potential level all the shrinking solitons are quadratic polynomials while the expanding solitons are in one-to-one correspondence to functions of homogenous of degree 2 with the Hessian bound. We also show that if the initial potential function is cone-like at infinity then the scaled flow converges to an expanding soliton as time goes to infinity.
The paper introduces a new differential-geometric system which originates from the theory of $m$-Hessian operators. The core of this system is a new notion of invariant differentiation on multidimensional surfaces. This novelty gives rise to the following absolute geometric invariants: invariant derivatives of the surface position vector, an invariant connection on a surface via subsurface, curvature matrices of a hypersurface and its normal sections, $p$-curvatures and $m$-convexity of a hypersurface, etc. Our system also produces a new interpretation of the classic geometric invariants and o…
The Ricci Calabi functional is a functional on the space of Kähler metrics of Fano manifolds. Its critical points are called generalized Kähler Einstein metrics. In this article, we show that the Hessian of the Ricci Calabi functional is non-negative at generalized Kähler Einstein metrics. As its application, we give another proof of a Matsushima's type decomposition theorem for holomorphic vector fields, which was originally proved by Mabuchi. We also discuss a relation to the inverse Monge-Ampère flow developed recently by Collins-Hisamoto-Takahashi.
Let L be an ample bundle over a compact complex manifold X. Fix a Hermitian metric in L whose curvature defines a Kähler metric on X. The Hessian of Mabuchi energy is a fourth-order elliptic operator D on functions which arises in the study of scalar curvature. We quantise D by the Hessian E(k) of balancing energy, a function appearing in the study of balanced embeddings. E(k) is defined on the space of Hermitian endomorphisms of H^0(X, L^k), endowed with the L^2-innerproduct. We first prove that the leading order term in the asymptotic expansion of E(k) is D. We next show that if Aut(X,L) is …

We obtain a local Sobolev constant estimate for integral Ricci curvature, which enables us to extend several important tools such as the maximal principle, the gradient estimate, the heat kernel estimate and the $L^2$ Hessian estimate to manifolds with integral Ricci lower bounds, without the non-collapsing conditions.
We characterize those complete K{ä}hler manifolds supporting a nonconstant real-valued function with critical points whose Hessian is complex linear, has pointwise two eigenvalues and whose gradient is a Hessian-eigenvector.
In this paper, we consider the inverse hessian quotient curvature flow with star-shaped initial hypersurface in anti-de Sitter-Schwarzschild manifold. We prove that the solution exists for all time, and the second fundamental form converges to identity exponentially fast.
Let $(X,ω)$ be a compact Kähler manifold of dimension $n$, and fix $1\leq m\leq n.$ We prove that the complex Hessian equation $(ω+dd^cφ)^m\wedge ω^{n-m}=fω^n$, with $0<f\in \mathcal{C}^{\infty}(X)$ has a smooth admissible solution $ φ\in \mathcal{C}^{\infty}(X)$. This was previously known to hold when $(X,ω)$ has non negative holomorphic bisectional curvature.
We discuss in which sense general metric measure spaces possess a first order differential structure. Building on this, we then see that on spaces with Ricci curvature bounded from below a second order calculus can be developed, permitting to define Hessian, covariant/exterior derivatives and Ricci curvature.
The volume distance from a point p to a convex hypersurface M of the (N+1)-dimensional space is defined as the minimum (N+1)-volume of a region bounded by M and a hyperplane H through the point. This function is differentiable in a neighborhood of M and if we restrict its hessian to the minimizing hyperplane H(p) we obtain, after normalization, a symmetric bi-linear form Q. In this paper, we prove that Q converges to the affine Blaschke metric when we approximate the hypersurface along a curve whose points are centroids of parallel sections. We also show that the rate of this convergence is gi…
We establish interior $C^2$ estimates for convex solutions of scalar curvature equation and $σ_2$-Hessian equation. We also prove interior curvature estimate for isometrically immersed hypersurfaces $(M^n,g)\subset \mathbb R^{n+1}$ with positive scalar curvature. These estimates are consequences of an interior estimate for these equations obtained under a weakened condition.
We consider the problem of finding complete conformal metrics with prescribed curvature functions of the Einstein tensor and of more general modified Schouten tensors. To achieve this, we reveal an algebraic structure of a wide class of fully nonlinear equations. Our method is appropriate and delicate as shown by a topological obstruction. Finally, we discuss Hessian equations and Weingarten equations by confirming a key assumption.
