We consider surfaces immersed in three-dimensional pseudohermitian manifolds. We define the notion of (p-)mean curvature and of the associated (p-)minimal surfaces, extending some concepts previously given for the (flat) Heisenberg group. We interpret the p-mean curvature not only as the tangential sublaplacian of a defining function, but also as the curvature of a characteristic curve, and as a quantity in terms of calibration geometry.
As a differential equation, the p-minimal surface equation is degenerate (hyperbolic and elliptic). To analyze the singular set, we formulate some {\em extension} theorems, which describe how the characteristic curves meet the singular set. This allows us to classify the entire solutions to this equation and to solve a Bernstein-type problem (for graphs over the $xy$-plane) in the Heisenberg group $H_1$. In $H_{1}$, identified with the Euclidean space $R^{3}$, the p-minimal surfaces are classical ruled surfaces with the rulings generated by Legendrian lines. We also prove a uniqueness theorem for the Dirichlet problem under a condition on the size of the singular set in two dimensions, and generalize to higher dimensions without any size control condition.
We also show that there are no closed, connected, $C^{2}$ smoothly immersed constant p-mean curvature or p-minimal surfaces of genus greater than one in the standard $S^{3}.$ This fact continues to hold when $S^{3}$ is replaced by a general spherical pseudohermitian 3-manifold.
We discuss a remarkable formula discovered by Jerison and Lee to classify constant scalar curvature pseudohermitian structures on the sphere. We show that the formula is valid in the wider context of Einstein pseudohermitian manifolds. As an application we prove a uniqueness result that generalizes the theorem of Jerison and Lee.
Modelled on a real hypersurface in a quaternionic manifold, we introduce a quaternionic analogue of CR structure, called quaternionic CR structure. We define the strong pseudoconvexity of this structure as well as the notion of quaternionic pseudohermitian structure. Following the construction of the Tanaka-Webster connection in complex CR geometry, we construct a canonical connection associated with a quaternionic pseudohermitian structure, when the underlying quaternionic CR structure satisfies the ultra-pseudoconvexity which is stronger than the strong pseudoconvexity. Comparison to Biquard…
This paper mainly focuses on the CR analogue of the three-circle theorem in a complete noncompact pseudohermitian manifold of vanishing torsion being odd dimensional counterpart of Kähler geometry. In this paper, we show that the CR three-circle theorem holds if its pseudohermitian sectional curvature is nonnegative. As an application, we confirm the first CR Yau's uniformization conjecture and obtain the CR analogue of the sharp dimension estimate for CR holomorphic functions of polynomial growth and its rigidity when the pseudohermitian sectional curvature is nonnegative. This is also the fi…
In this paper, we derive the CR Reilly's formula and its applications to studying of the first eigenvalue estimate for CR Dirichlet eigenvalue problem and embedded p-minimal hypersurfaces. In particular, we obtain the first Dirichlet eigenvalue estimate in a compact pseudohermitian (2n+1)-manifold with boundary and the first eigenvalue estimate of the tangential sublaplacian on closed oriented embedded p-minimal hypersurfaces in a closed pseudohermitian (2n+1)-manifold of vanishing torsion.
We define an ADM-like mass, called p-mass, for an asymptotically flat pseudohermitian manifold. The p-mass for the blow-up of a compact pseudohermitian manifold (with no boundary) is identified with the first nontrivial coefficient in the expansion of the Green function for the CR Laplacian. We deduce an integral formula for the p-mass, and we reduce its positivity to a solution of Kohn's equation. We prove that the p-mass is non-negative for (blow-ups of) compact 3-manifolds of positive Tanaka-Webster class and with non-negative CR Paneitz operator. Under these assumptions, we also characteri…
We express two CR invariant surface area elements in terms of quantities in pseudohermitian geometry. We deduce the Euler-Lagrange equations of the associated energy functionals. Many solutions are given and discussed. In relation to the singular CR Yamabe problem, we show that one of the energy functionals appears as the coefficient (up to a constant multiple) of the log term in the associated volume renormalization.
We study properly embedded and immersed p(pseudohermitian)-minimal surfaces in the 3-dimensional Heisenberg group. From the recent work of Cheng, Hwang, Malchiodi, and Yang, we learn that such surfaces must be ruled surfaces. There are two types of such surfaces: band type and annulus type according to their topology. We give an explicit expression for these surfaces. Among band types there is a class of properly embedded p-minimal surfaces of so called helicoid type. We classify all the helicoid type p-minimal surfaces. This class of p-minimal surfaces includes all the entire p-minimal graphs…
A surface M is called p-minimal if one of the coordinate functions is p-harmonic in the inner metric. We show that in the twodimensional case the Gaussian map of such surfaces is quasiconformal. In the case when the surface is a tube we study the geometrical structure of such surfaces. In particularly, we establish the second order differential inequality for the form of the sections of M which generalizes the known ones in the minimal surfaces theory.
We show that there are minimal graphs in R^{n+1} whose intersection with the portion of the horizontal hyperplane contained in the unit ball has any prescribed geometry, up to a small deformation. The proof hinges on the construction of minimal graphs that are almost flat but have small oscillations whose geometry we can control.
This is a corrected version of my paper "Application of integral geometry to minimal surfaces" appeared in International J. Math. vol. 4 Nr. 1 (1993), 89-111. The correction concerns Proposition 3.5. We discuss this correction in Appendix to the original version of my published paper by reproducing our correspondence with Professor Tasaki.
We give an introduction to the theory of varieties of minimal rational tangents, emphasizing its aspect as a fusion of algebraic geometry and differential geometry, more specifically, a fusion of Mori geometry of minimal rational curves and Cartan geometry of cone structures.
In this survey we report a general and systematic approach to study $[φ,\vec{e}_{3}]$-minimal surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^{3}$ from a geometric viewpoint and show some fundamental results obtained in the recent development of this theory.
This is the second in a series of papers where we estab- lish skin structural concepts and results for singular area minimizing hypersurfaces. Here we conformally unfold these spaces to complete Gromov hyperbolic spaces with bounded geometry and we recover their singular set as the Gromov boundary but also as the Martin boundary for many classical elliptic operators.
We study geometric properties of compact stable minimal surfaces with boundary in homogeneous 3-manifolds $X$ that can be expressed as a semidirect product of $\mathbb{R}^2$ with $\mathbb{R}$ endowed with a left invariant metric. For any such compact minimal surface $M$, we provide a priori radius estimate which depends only on the maximum distance of points of the boundary $\partial M$ to a vertical geodesic of $X$. We also give a generalization of the classical Rado's Theorem in $\mathbb{R}^3$ to the context of compact minimal surfaces with graphical boundary over a convex horizontal domain …
We study the converse to the statement that instantons are minimizers of the Yang--Mills energy in four dimensions. We show that given an energy minimizing connection, A, the curvature of A takes values in a subbundle of the adjoint bundle which decomposes as a sum of instantons.
Given $I,B\in\mathbb{N}\cup \{0\}$, we investigate the existence and geometry of complete finitely branched minimal surfaces $M$ in $\mathbb{R}^3$ with Morse index at most $I$ and total branching order at most $B$. Previous works of Fischer-Colbrie and Ros explain that such surfaces are precisely the complete minimal surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^3$ of finite total curvature and finite total branching order. Among other things, we derive scale-invariant weak chord-arc type results for such an $M$ with estimates that are given in terms of $I$ and $B$. In order to obtain some of our main results for t…
Minimal surfaces are among the most natural objects in Differential Geometry, and have been studied for the past 250 years ever since the pioneering work of Lagrange. The subject is characterized by a profound beauty, but perhaps even more remarkably, minimal surfaces (or minimal submanifolds) have encountered striking applications in other fields, like three-dimensional topology, mathematical physics, conformal geometry, among others. Even though it has been the subject of intense activity, many basic open problems still remain. In this lecture we will survey recent advances in this area and …
We study invariant submanifolds of manifolds endowed with a normal or complex metric contact pair with decomposable endomorphism field $ϕ$. For the normal case, we prove that a $ϕ$-invariant submanifold tangent to a Reeb vector field and orthogonal to the other one is minimal. For a $ϕ$-invariant submanifold $N$ everywhere transverse to both the Reeb vector fields but not orthogonal to them, we prove that it is minimal if and only if the angle between the tangential component $ξ$ (with respect to $N$) of a Reeb vector field and the Reeb vector field itself is constant along the integral curves…
This is a continuation of our previous paper [14]. In [14], we introduced the first Aeppli-Chern class on compact complex manifolds, and proved that the $(1,1)$ curvature form of the Levi-Civita connection represents the first Aeppli-Chern class which is a natural link between Riemannian geometry and complex geometry. In this paper, we study the geometry of compact complex manifolds with Levi-Civita Ricci-flat metrics and classify minimal complex surfaces with Levi-Civita Ricci-flat metrics. More precisely, we show that minimal complex surfaces admitting Levi-Civita Ricci-flat metrics are Kähl…
We study the intrinsic geometry of area minimizing (and also of almost minimizing) hypersurfaces from a new point of view by relating this subject to quasiconformal geometry. For any such hypersurface we define and construct a so-called S-structure which reveals some unexpected geometric and analytic properties of the hypersurface and its singularity set. In this paper, this is used to prove the existence of hyperbolic unfoldings: canonical conformal deformations of the regular part of these hypersurfaces into complete Gromov hyperbolic spaces of bounded geometry with Gromov boundary homeomorp…
We suggest a new definition for discrete minimal surfaces in terms of sphere packings with orthogonally intersecting circles. These discrete minimal surfaces can be constructed from Schramm's circle patterns. We present a variational principle which allows us to construct discrete analogues of some classical minimal surfaces. The data used for the construction are purely combinatorial--the combinatorics of the curvature line pattern. A Weierstrass-type representation and an associated family are derived. We show the convergence to continuous minimal surfaces.
This exposition gives an introduction to the theory of surfaces in Laguerre geometry and surveys some results, mostly obtained by the authors, about three important classes of surfaces in Laguerre geometry, namely L-isothermic, L-minimal, and generalized L-minimal surfaces. The quadric model of Lie sphere geometry is adopted for Laguerre geometry and the method of moving frames is used throughout. As an example, the Cartan-Kaehler theorem is applied to study the Cauchy problem for the Pfaffian differential system of L-minimal surfaces. This is an elaboration of the talks given by the authors a…
We investigate the minimal and isoperimetric surface problems in a large class of sub-Riemannian manifolds, the so-called Vertically Rigid spaces. We construct an adapted connection for such spaces and, using the variational tools of Bryant, Griffiths and Grossman, derive succinct forms of the Euler-Lagrange equations for critical points for the associated variational problems. Using the Euler-Lagrange equations, we show that minimal and isoperimetric surfaces satisfy a constant horizontal mean curvature conditions away from characteristic points. Moreover, we use the formalism to construct a …
In the present paper we study the Lie sphere geometry of Legendre surfaces by the method of moving frame and we prove an existence theorem for real-analytic Lie-minimal Legendre surfaces.
Given a closed surface S of genus at least 2, we compare the symplectic structure of Taubes' moduli space of minimal hyperbolic germs with the Goldman symplectic structure on the character variety X(S, PSL(2,C)) and the affine cotangent symplectic structure on the space of complex projective structures CP(S) given by the Schwarzian parametrization. This is done in restriction to the moduli space of almost-Fuchsian structures by involving a notion of renormalized volume, used to relate the geometry of a minimal surface in a hyperbolic 3-manifold to the geometry of its ideal conformal boundary.
Supercurrents, as introduced by Lagerberg, were mainly motivated as a way to study tropical varieties. Here we will associate a supercurrent to any smooth submanifold of $\R^n$. Positive supercurrents resemble positive currents in complex analysis, but depend on a choice of scalar product on $\R^n$ and reflect the induced Riemannian structure on the submanifold. In this way we can use techniques from complex analysis to study real submanifolds. We illustrate the idea by giving area estimates of minimal manifolds and a monotinicity property of the mean curvature flow. We also illustrate the ide…
Complex contact manifolds arise naturally in differential geometry, algebraic geometry and exterior differential systems. Their classification would answer an important question about holonomy groups. The geometry of such manifold $X$ is governed by the contact lines contained in $X$. These are related to the notion of a variety of minimal rational tangents. In this review we discuss the partial classification theorems of projective complex contact manifolds. Among such manifolds one finds contact Fano manifolds (which include adjoint varieties) and projectivised cotangent bundles. In the firs…
An immersion of a compact manifold is tight if it admits the minimal total absolute curvature over all immersions of the manifold. A prominent result in the study of minimal total absolute curvature immersions is the theorem of Chern and Lashof, which characterizes minimal total absolute curvature immersions, and tight immersions, of spheres into a Euclidean space. In this paper we examine tight immersions of highly connected manifolds; i.e., 2k-dimensional manifolds that are (k-1)-connected by not k-connected, and characterize the immersions of highest codimension.
This is the first in a series of papers devoted to an analogue of the metaplectic representation, namely, the minimal unitary representation of an indefinite orthogonal group; this representation corresponds to the minimal nilpotent coadjoint orbit in the philosophy of Kirillov-Kostant. We begin by applying methods from conformal geometry of pseudo-Riemannian manifolds to a general construction of an infinite-dimensional representation of the conformal group on the solution space of the Yamabe equation. By functoriality of the constructions, we obtain different models of the unitary representa…
This paper develops new tools for understanding surfaces with more than one end (and usually, of infinite topology) which properly minimally embed into Euclidean three-space. On such a surface, the set of ends forms a compact Hausdorff space, naturally ordered by the relative heights of the ends in space. One of our main results is that the middle ends of the surface have quadratic area growth, and are thus not limit ends. This implies, for instance, that the surface can have at most two limit ends (at the top and bottom of the ordering), which is a strong topological restriction. There are al…
We prove a general fusion theorem for complete orientable minimal surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^3$ with finite total curvature. As a consequence, complete orientable minimal surfaces of weak finite total curvature with exotic geometry are produced. More specifically, universal surfaces (i.e., surfaces from which all minimal surfaces can be recovered) and space-filling surfaces with arbitrary genus and no symmetries.
We obtain geometric characterizations of isospectral minimal Riemannian Legendre foliations on compact Sasakian manifolds of constant $ϕ$-sectional curvature.
In this paper, we prove that any surface corresponding to linear second-order ODEs as a submanifold is minimal in all classes of third-order ODEs $y'''=f(x, y, p, q)$ as a Riemannian manifold where $y'=p$ and $y''=q$, if and only if $q_{yy}=0$. Moreover, we will see the linear second-order ODE with general form $y''=\pm y+β(x)$ is the only case that is defined a minimal surface and is also totally geodesic.
Various transformations of isothermic surfaces are discussed and their interrelations are analyzed. Applications to cmc-1 surfaces in hyperbolic space and their minimal cousins in Euclidean space are presented: the Umehara-Yamada perturbation, the classical and Bryant's Weierstrass type representations, and the duality for cmc-1 surfaces are interpreted in terms of transformations of isothermic surfaces. A new Weierstrass type representation is introduced and a Moebius geometric characterization of cmc-1 surfaces in hyperbolic space and minimal surfaces in Euclidean space is given.
We study the intrinsic structure of parametric minimal discs in metric spaces admitting a quadratic isoperimetric inequality. We associate to each minimal disc a compact, geodesic metric space whose geometric, topological, and analytic properties are controlled by the isoperimetric inequality. Its geometry can be used to control the shapes of all curves and therefore the geometry and topology of the original metric space. The class of spaces arising in this way as intrinsic minimal discs is a natural generalization of the class of Ahlfors regular discs, well-studied in analysis on metric space…
We study the size of the isometry group Isom(M, g) of Riemannian manifolds (M, g) as g varies. For M not admitting a circle action, we show that the order of Isom(M, g) can be universally bounded in terms of the bounds on Ricci curvature, diameter, and injectivity radius of M. This generalizes results known for negative Ricci curvature to all manifolds. More generally we establish a similar universal bound on the index of the deck group pi_1(M) in the isometry group Isom(X, g) of the universal cover X in the absence of suitable actions by connected groups. We apply this to characterize locally…
In this article we extend several foundational results of the theory of complete minimal surfaces of finite index in the Euclidean space to minimal surfaces in asymptotically flat manifolds and, more generally, to marginally outer-trapped surfaces in initial data sets of General Relativity. We show that if an asymptotically flat 3-manifold (M,g) of nonnegative scalar curvature contains a non-compact, properly embedded minimal surface which is stable and has quadratic area growth, then it is isometric to the flat R^{3}. This implies, for instance, that in presence of a positive ADM mass any seq…
In this study, we analyze the general canal surfaces in terms of the features flat, II-flat minimality and II-minimality, namely we study under which conditions the first and second Gauss and mean curvature vanishes, i.e. K=0, H=0, K_{II}=0 and H_{II} =0. We give a non-existence result for general canal surfaces in E^3 with vanishing the curvatures K, H, K_{II} and H_{II} except the cylinder and cone.We classify the general canal surfaces for which are degenerate according to their radiuses. Finally we obtain that there are no flat, minimal, II-flat and II-minimal general canal surfaces in the…
Moser's Bernstein theorem \cite{moser61} says that an entire minimal graph of codimension 1 with bounded slope must be a hyperplane. An analogous result for arbitrary codimension is not true, by an example of Lawson-Osserman. Here, we show that Moser's theorem nevertheless extends to codimension 2, i.e., a minimal $p$-submanifold in $R^{p+2}$, which is the graph of a smooth function defined on the entire $R^p$ with bounded slope, must be a $p$-plane. Our method depends on convexity properties of Grassmannians which come into play as the targets of the (harmonic) Gauss maps of our minimal subma…
In a previous work, we studied isoparametric functions on Riemannian manifolds, especially on exotic spheres. One result there says that, in the family of isoparametric hypersurfaces of a closed Riemannian manifold, there exist at least one minimal isoparametric hypersurface. In this note, we show such minimal isoparametric hypersurface is also unique in the family if the ambient manifold has positive Ricci curvature. Moreover, we give a proof of the Theorem D claimed by Q.M.Wang (without proof) which asserts that the focal submanifolds of an isoparametric function on a complete Riemannian man…
We consider the relationship of the geometry of compact Riemannian manifolds with boundary to the first nonzero eigenvalue sigma_1 of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map (Steklov eigenvalue). For surfaces Sigma with genus gamma and k boundary components we obtain the upper bound sigma_1L(\partial Σ) \leq 2(2gamma+k)π. We attempt to find the best constant in this inequality for annular surfaces (gamma=0 and k=2). For rotationally symmetric metrics we show that the best constant is achieved by the induced metric on the portion of the catenoid centered at the origin which meets a sphere orthogonally and…
Let G be a compact simple Lie group and the O the minimal nilpotent orbit in g^C. We determine all G-invariant Kähler potentials for hyperKähler metrics compatible with the KKS complex symplectic form on O.
In this paper, we study geometry of totally real minimal surfaces in the complex hyperquadric $Q_{N-2}$, and obtain some characterizations of the harmonic sequence generated by these minimal immersions. For totally real flat surfaces that are minimal in both $Q_{N-2}$ and $\mathbb{C}P^{N-1}$, we determine them for $N=4, 5, 6$, and give a classification theorem when they are Clifford solutions.
This is the third in a series of papers on the geometry and analysis of singular area minimizing hypersurfaces. We show how to derive obstruction and structure theories for scalar curvature constraints without imposing dimensional or topological restrictions on the underlying manifold. To this end, we use skin structures to merge minimal hypersurface methods with surgery arguments.
In this paper, we study the interplay of geometry and positive scalar curvature on a complete, non-compact manifold with non-negative Ricci curvature. In three-dimensional manifold, we prove a minimal volume growth, an estimate of integral of scalar curvature and width. In higher dimensional manifold, we obtain a volume growth with a stronger condition.
We consider minimal immersions in MxR. We study existence and uniqueness of associate and conjugate isometric immersions to a given minimal surface. We use the theory of univalent harmonic map between surfaces. Then we study the geometry of associate minimal vertical graphs. We prove that an associate surface of a vertical graph on a convex domain is a graph. In the classical theory it is a theorem of R. Krust.
We prove: a properly embedded, genus-one minimal surface that is asymptotic to a helicoid and that contains two straight lines must intersect that helicoid precisely in those two lines. In particular, the two lines divide the surface into two connected components that lie on either side of the helicoid. We prove an analogous result for periodic helicoid-like surfaces. We also give a simple condition guaranteeing that an immersed minimal surface with finite genus and bounded curvature is asymptotic to a helicoid at infinity.
$(M^n,g)$ be a complete Riemannian manifold without conjugate points. In this paper, we show that if $M$ is also simply connected, then $M$ is flat, provided that $M$ is also asymptotically harmonic manifold with minimal horospheres (AHM). The (first order) flatness of $M$ is shown by using the strongest criterion: $\{{e_i}\}$ be an orthonormal basis of $T_{p}M$ and $\{b_{e_{i}}\}$ be the corresponding Busemann functions on $M$. Then, (1) The vector space $V = span\{b_{v} | v \in T_{p}M \}$ is finite dimensional and dim $V = $ dim $M = n$.(2) $\{\nabla b_{e_i}(p) \}$ is a global parallel ortho…
