We consider minimal immersions in MxR. We study existence and uniqueness of associate and conjugate isometric immersions to a given minimal surface. We use the theory of univalent harmonic map between surfaces. Then we study the geometry of associate minimal vertical graphs. We prove that an associate surface of a vertical graph on a convex domain is a graph. In the classical theory it is a theorem of R. Krust.
We consider isometric immersions in arbitrary codimension of three-dimensional strongly pseudoconvex pseudo-hermitian CR manifolds into the Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^n$ and generalize in a natural way the notion of associated family. We show that the existence of such deformations turns out to be very restrictive and we give a complete classification.
For a given simply connected Riemannian surface Sigma, we relate the problem of finding minimal isometric immersions of Sigma into S^2 x R or H^2 x R to a system of two partial differential equations on Sigma. We prove that a constant intrinsic curvature minimal surface in S^2 x R or H^2 x R is either totally geodesic or part of an associate surface of a certain limit of catenoids in H^2 x R. We also prove that if a non constant curvature Riemannian surface admits a continuous one-parameter family of minimal isometric immersions into S^2 x R or H^2 x R, then all these immersions are associate.
We study biminimal immersions, that is immersions which are critical points of the bienergy for normal variations with fixed energy. We give a geometrical description of the Euler-Lagrange equation associated to biminimal immersions for: i) biminimal curves in a Riemannian manifold, with particular care to the case of curves in a space form ii) isometric immersions of codimension one in a Riemannian manifold, in particular for surfaces of a three-dimensional manifold. We describe two methods to construct families of biminimal surfaces using both Riemannian and horizontally homothetic submersio…
In the present work we study the behavior of sequences of smooth global isothermic immersions of a given closed surface and having a uniformly bounded total curvature. We prove that, if the conformal class of this sequence is bounded in the Moduli space of the surface, it weakly converges in W^{2,2} away from finitely many points, modulo extraction of a subsequence, to a possibly branched weak isothermic immersion of this surface. Moreover, if this limit happens to be smooth away from the branched points, we give an optimal description of the possible loss of strong compactness of such a subse…
We will investigate the local geometry of the surfaces in the $7$-dimensional Euclidean space associated to harmonic maps from a Riemann surface $Σ$ into $S^6$. By applying methods based on the use of harmonic sequences, we will characterize the conformal harmonic immersions $φ:Σ\to S^6$ whose associated immersions $F:Σ\to \mathbb{R}^7$ belong to certain remarkable classes of surfaces, namely: minimal surfaces in hyperspheres; surfaces with parallel mean curvature vector field; pseudo-umbilical surfaces; isotropic surfaces.
This paper introduces a complex representation for spacelike surfaces in the Lorentz-Minkowski space $L^4$, based in two complex valued functions which can be assumed to be holomorphic or anti-holomorphic. When the immersion is contained in quadrics of $L^4$, the representation then allows us to obtain interesting partial differential equations with holomorphic or anti-holomorphic parameters, within which we find the partial Riccati Equation. Using then theory of holomorphic complex functions we construct explicitly new local solutions for those PDEs together with its associated geometric solu…
The class of differential equations describing pseudospherical surfaces enjoys important integrability properties which manifest themselves by the existence of infinite hierarchies of conservation laws (both local and non-local) and the presence associated linear problems. It thus contains many important known examples of integrable equations, like the sine-Gordon, Liouville, KdV, mKdV, Camassa-Holm and Degasperis-Procesi equations, and is also home to many new families of integrable equations. Our paper is concerned with the question of the local isometric immersion in ${\bf E}^{3}$ of the ps…
We show that generic rank conditions on the second fundamental form of an isometric immersion $f\colon M^{2n}\to\mathbb{R}^{2n+p}$ of a Kaehler manifold of complex dimension $n\geq 2$ into Euclidean space with low codimension $p$ implies that the submanifold has to be minimal. If $M^{2n}$ if simply connected, this amounts to the existence of a one-parameter associated family of isometric minimal immersions unless $f$ is holomorphic.
We consider conformal immersions of Riemann surfaces in $\bb{S}^4$ and study their Gauss maps with values in the Grassmann bundle $\mathcal{F} = SO_5/T^2 \to \mathbb{S}^4$. The energy of maps from Riemann surfaces into $\mathcal{F}$ is considered with respect to the normal metric on the target and immersions with harmonic Gauss maps are characterized. We also show that the normal-harmonic map equation for Gauss maps is a completely integrable system, thus giving a partial answer of a question posed by Y. Ohnita in \cite{ohnita}. Associated $\mathbb{S}^1$-families of parallel mean curvature imm…
We consider immersions of a Riemann surface into a manifold with $G_2$-holonomy and give criteria for them to be conformal and harmonic, in terms of an associated Gauss map.
We generalize the spinorial characterization of isometric immersions of surfaces in R^3 given by T. Friedrich (On the spinor representation of surfaces in Euclidean 3-space, J. Geom. Phys. 28 (1998)) to surfaces in S^3 and H^3. The main argument is the interpretation of the energy-momentum tensor associated with a special spinor field as a second fundamental form. It turns out that such a characterization of isometric immersions in terms of a special section of the spinor bundle also holds in the case of hypersurfaces in the Euclidean 4-space.
The class of differential equations describing pseudo-spherical surfaces, first introduced by Chern and Tenenblat [3], is characterized by the property that to each solution of a differential equation, within the class, there corresponds a 2-dimensional Riemannian metric of curvature equal to $-1$. The class of differential equations describing pseudo-spherical surfaces carries close ties to the property of complete integrability, as manifested by the existence of infinite hierarchies of conservation laws and associated linear problems. As such, it contains many important known examples of int…
We study analytic descriptions of conformal immersions of the Riemann sphere S^2 into the CP^(N-1) sigma model. In particular, an explicit expression for two-dimensional (2-D) surfaces, obtained from the generalized Weierstrass formula, is given. It is also demonstrated that these surfaces coincide with the ones obtained from the Sym-Tafel formula. These two approaches correspond to parametrizations of one and the same surface in R^(N^2-1).
The quantum cohomology of CP^1 is generated by some potential (Frobenius manifold) that also has an interpretation as a potential of some harmonic map. Actually, the potential induces harmonic maps into three different symmetric spaces and each of these harmonic maps induces an immersion of an integrable surface. The final goal of this paper is to investigate if any of the associated immersions closes around the singularity at z=0 (none does). The crucial tool for deciding this question is the main technical result of the paper, which states that the dressing isotropy of the CP^1 potential is …
We prove that for any open Riemann surface $N$ and finite subset $Z\subset \mathbb{S}^1=\{z\in\mathbb{C}\,|\;|z|=1\},$ there exist an infinite closed set $Z_N \subset \mathbb{S}^1$ containing $Z$ and a null holomorphic curve $F=(F_j)_{j=1,2,3}:N\to\mathbb{C}^3$ such that the map $Y:Z_N\times N\to \mathbb{R}^2,$ $Y(v,P)=Re(v(F_1,F_2)(P)),$ is proper. In particular, $Re(vF):N \to\mathbb{R}^3$ is a proper conformal minimal immersion properly projecting into $\mathbb{R}^2=\mathbb{R}^2\times\{0\}\subset\mathbb{R}^3,$ for all $v \in Z_N.$
We start the investigation of immersions $Ψ$ of a simply connected domain $D$ into three dimensional Euclidean space $R^3$, which have constant mean curvature (CMC-immersions), and allow for a group of automorphisms of $D$ which leave the image $Ψ(D)$ invariant. On one hand, this leads to a detailed description of symmetric CMC-surfaces and the associated symmetry groups. On the other hand, it allows us to start the classification of CMC-immersions of an arbitrary, compact or noncompact Riemann surface $M$ into $R^3$ in terms of Weierstrass-type data, as introduced by Pedit, Wu, and one of the…
Associated to oriented surfaces immersed in R^3 here are studied pairs of transversal foliations with singularities, defined on the Elliptic region, where the Gaussian curvature K, given by the product of the principal curvatures k_1, k_2 of the immersion, is positive. The leaves of the foliations are the lines of M- mean curvature, along which the normal curvature of the immersion is given by a function M = M(k_1,k_2) in [k_1, k_2], called a M- mean curvature, whose properties extend and unify those of the arithmetic H=(k_1+k_2)/2, the geometric K^{1/2} and harmonic K/H=((1/{k_1} + 1/{k_2})/2…
We introduce a type of minimal surface in the pseudo-hyperbolic space $\mathbb{H}^{n,n}$ (with $n$ even) or $\mathbb{H}^{n+1,n-1}$ (with $n$ odd) associated to cyclic $\mathrm{SO}_0(n,n+1)$-Higg bundles. By establishing the infinitesimal rigidity of these surfaces, we get a new proof, for $\mathrm{SO}_0(n,n+1)$, of Labourie's theorem that the holonomy map restricts to an immersion on the cyclic locus of Hitchin base, and extend it to Collier's components. This implies Labourie's former conjecture in the case of the exceptional group $G_2'$, for which we also show that these minimal surfaces ar…
