We study biminimal immersions, that is immersions which are critical points of the bienergy for normal variations with fixed energy. We give a geometrical description of the Euler-Lagrange equation associated to biminimal immersions for: i) biminimal curves in a Riemannian manifold, with particular care to the case of curves in a space form ii) isometric immersions of codimension one in a Riemannian manifold, in particular for surfaces of a three-dimensional manifold. We describe two methods to construct families of biminimal surfaces using both Riemannian and horizontally homothetic submersions.
We consider a non-negative biminimal properly immersed submanifold $M$ (that is, a biminimal properly immersed submanifold with $λ\geq0$) in a complete Riemannian manifold $N$ with non-positive sectional curvature. Assume that the sectional curvature $K^N$ of $N$ satisfies $K^N\geq-L(1+{\rm dist}_N(\cdot, q_0)^2)^{\fracα{2}}$ for some $L>0,$ $2>α\geq 0$ and $q_0\in N$. Then, we prove that $M$ is minimal. As a corollary, we give that any biharmonic properly immersed submanifold in a hyperbolic space is minimal. These results give affirmative partial answers to the global version of generalized …
In this note, we give natural extensions to cylinders and tori of a classical result due to T. Takahashi about minimal immersions into spheres. More precisely, we deal with Euclidean isometric immersions whose projections in R^N satisfy a spectral condition of their Laplacian.
In this paper, we study biharmonic isometric immersions of a surface into and biharmonic Riemannian submersion from 3-dimensional Berger spheres. We obtain a classification of proper biharmonic isometric immersions of a surface with constant mean curvature into Berger 3-spheres. We also give a complete classification of proper biharmonic Hopf tori in Berger 3-sphere. For Riemannian submersions, we prove that a Riemannian submersion from Berger 3-spheres into a surface is biharmonic if and only if it is harmonic.
Several characterizations of umbilic points of submanifolds in arbitrary Riemannian and Lorentzian manifolds are given. As a consequence, we obtain new characterizations of spheres in the Euclidean space and of hyperbolic spaces in the Lorentz-Minkowski space. We also prove the Lorentzian version of a classical result by Cartan.
We study curvature invariants of a sub-Riemannian manifold (i.e., a manifold with a Riemannian metric on a non-holonomic distribution) related to mutual curvature of several pairwise orthogonal subspaces of the distribution, and prove geometrical inequalities for a sub-Riemannian submanifold. As applications, inequalities are proved for submanifolds with mutually orthogonal distributions that include scalar and mutual curvature. For compact submanifolds, inequalities are obtained that are supported by known integral formulas for almost-product manifolds.
We proved that a conformal immersion of $M_0^{n_0}\times M_1^{n_1}$ as an hipersurface in a Euclidean space must be an extrinsic product of immersions, under the assumption that $n_0, n_1 \geq 2$ and that $M^{n_0}_0\times M^{n_1}_1$ is not conformally flat. We also stated a similar theorem for an arbitrary number of factors, more precisely, a conformal immersion $f\colon M^{n_0}_0 \times \cdots \times M^{n_k}_k \rightarrow \mathbb{R}^{n+k}$ must be an extrinsic product of immersions if one of the factors admits a plane with vanishing curvature and the remaining factors are not flat.
A Riemannian manifold endowed with $k\ge2$ complementary pairwise orthogonal distributions is called a Riemannian almost $k$-product manifold. In the article, for the first time, we study the following problem: find a relationship between intrinsic and extrinsic invariants of a Riemannian almost $k$-product manifold isometrically immersed in another Riemannian manifold. For such immersions, we establish an optimal inequality that includes the mixed scalar curvature and the square of the mean curvature. Although Riemannian curvature tensor belongs to intrinsic geometry, a special part called th…
We use a new method to give conditions for the existence of a local isometric immersion of a Riemannian $n$-manifold $M$ in $\mathbb{R}^{n+k}$, for a given $n$ and $k$. These equate to the (local) existence of a $k$-tuple of scalar fields on the manifold, satisfying a certain non-linear equation involving the Riemannian curvature tensor of $M$. Setting $k=1$, we proceed to recover the fundamental theorem of hypersurfaces. In the case of manifolds of positive sectional curvature and $n\geq 3$, we reduce the solvability of the Gauss and Codazzi equations to the cancelation of a set of obstructio…
We study two aspects of the loop group formulation for isometric immersions with flat normal bundle of space forms. The first aspect is to examine the loop group maps along different ranges of the loop parameter. This leads to various equivalences between global isometric immersion problems among different space forms and pseudo-Riemannian space forms. As a corollary, we obtain a non-immersibility theorem for spheres into certain pseudo-Riemannian spheres and hyperbolic spaces. The second aspect pursued is to clarify the relationship between the loop group formulation of isometric immersions o…
We prove an existence result for local and global G-structure preserving affine immersions between affine manifolds. Several examples are discussed in the context of Riemannian and semi-Riemannian geometry, including the case of isometric immersions into Lie groups endowed with a left-invariant metric, and the case of isometric immersions into products of space forms.
We give a spinorial characterization of isometrically immersed surfaces of arbitrary signature into 3-dimensional pseudo-Riemannian space forms. For Lorentzian surfaces, this generalizes a recent work of the first author in $\mathbb{R}^{2,1}$ to other Lorentzian space forms. We also characterize immersions of Riemannian surfaces in these spaces. From this we can deduce analogous results for timelike immersions of Lorentzian surfaces in space forms of corresponding signature, as well as for spacelike and timelike immersions of surfaces of signature (0,2), hence achieving a complete spinorial de…
Given a compact manifold $M$ and a Riemannian manifold $N$ of bounded geometry, we consider the manifold ${\rm Imm} (M,N)$ of immersions from $M$ to $N$ and its subset ${\rm Imm}_μ(M,N)$ of those immersions with the property that the volume-form of the pull-back metric equals $μ$. We first show that the non-minimal elements of ${\rm Imm}_μ(M,N) $ form a splitting submanifold. On this submanifold we consider the Levi-Civita connection for various natural Sobolev metrics write down the geodesic equation and show local well-posedness in many cases. The question is a natural generalization of the …
In this paper we obtain lower bound estimates of the spectrum of Laplace-Beltrami operator on complete submanifolds with bounded mean curvature, whose ambient space admits a Riemannian submersion over a Riemannian manifold with negative sectional curvature. Our main theorem generalizes many previous known estimates and applies for both immersions and submersions.
Let $M$ be a space-like surface immersed in a 4-dimensional pseudo-Riemannian space form $R^4_2(c)$ with constant sectional curvature $c$ and index two. In the first part of this article, we prove that the Gauss curvature $K$, the normal curvature $K^D$, and mean curvature vector $H$ of $M$ satisfy the general inequality: $K+K^D\geq H,H +c$. In the second part, we investigate space-like minimal surfaces in $R^4_2(c)$ which satisfy the equality case of the inequality identically. Several classification results in this respect are then obtained.
An isometric immersion $f: M^{n} \rightarrow \tilde M^{m}$ from an $n$-dimensional Riemannian manifold $M^{n}$ into an almost Hermitian manifold $\tilde M^{m}$ of complex dimension $m$ is called pointwise slant if its Wirtinger angles define a function defined on $M$. In this paper we establish the existence and uniqueness theorems for pointwise slant immersions of Riemannian manifolds $M^{n}$ into a complex space form $\tilde M^{n}(c)$ of constant holomorphic sectional curvature $c$.
In this paper we study fundamental geometric properties of doubly warped product immersion which is an extension of warped product immersion. Moreover, we study geometric inequality for doubly warped products isometrically immersed in arbitrary Riemannian manifolds.
We explore the relation among volume, curvature and properness of a $m$-dimensional isometric immersion in a Riemannian manifold. We show that, when the $L^p$-norm of the mean curvature vector is bounded for some $m \leq p\leq \infty$, and the ambient manifold is a Riemannian manifold with bounded geometry, properness is equivalent to the finiteness of the volume of extrinsic balls. We also relate the total absolute curvature of a surface isometrically immersed in a Riemannian manifold with its properness. Finally, we relate the curvature and the topology of a complete and non-compact $2$-Riem…
For a given simply connected Riemannian surface Sigma, we relate the problem of finding minimal isometric immersions of Sigma into S^2 x R or H^2 x R to a system of two partial differential equations on Sigma. We prove that a constant intrinsic curvature minimal surface in S^2 x R or H^2 x R is either totally geodesic or part of an associate surface of a certain limit of catenoids in H^2 x R. We also prove that if a non constant curvature Riemannian surface admits a continuous one-parameter family of minimal isometric immersions into S^2 x R or H^2 x R, then all these immersions are associate.
We consider critical points of the global squared $L^2$-norms of the second fundamental form and the mean curvature vector of isometric immersions into a fixed background Riemannian manifold under deformations of the immersion. We use the critical points of the former functional to define canonical representatives of a given integer homology class of the background manifold. We study the fibration ${\mathbb S}^3 \hookrightarrow Sp(2)\stackrel {π_{\circ}}{\rightarrow} {\mathbb S}^7$ from this point of view, showing that the fibers are the canonical generators of the $3$-integer homology of $Sp(…
We introduce polar metrics on a product manifold, which have product and warped product metrics as special cases. We prove a de Rham-type theorem characterizing Riemannian manifolds that can be locally decomposed as a product manifold endowed with a polar metric. For a product manifold endowed with a polar metric, our main result gives a complete description of all its isometric immersions into a space form whose second fundamental forms are adapetd to its product structure, in the sense that the tangent spaces to each factor are preserved by all shape operators. This is a far-reaching general…
We prove that there do not exist odd-dimensional stable compact minimal immersions in the product of two complex projective spaces. We also prove that the only stable compact minimal immersions in the product of a quaternionic projective space with any other Riemannian manifold are the products of quaternionic projective subspaces with compact stable minimal immersions of the second manifold in the Riemmanian product. These generalize similar results of the second-named author of immersions with low dimensions or codimensions to immersions with arbitrary dimensions. In addition, we prove that …
In this paper, we show the rigidity of isometric immersions for a Riemannian manifold of dimension $n-1$ into the light cone of $n+1$ dimensional Minkowski, de Sitter and anti-de Sitter spacetimes for $n\geq 3$.
We consider submanifolds into Riemannian manifold with metallic structures. We obtain some new results for hypersurfaces in these spaces and we express the fundamental theorem of submanifolds into products spaces in terms of metallic structures. Moreover, we define new structures called complex metallic structures. We show that these structures are linked with complex structures. Then, we consider submanifolds into Riemannian manifold with such structures with a focus on invariant submanifolds and hypersurfaces. We also express in particular the fundamental theorem of submanifolds of complex s…
We study the gradient flow of the $L^2-$norm of the second fundamental form of smooth immersions of two-dimensional surfaces into compact Riemannian manifolds. By analogy with the results obtained for the Willmore flow in Riemannian manifolds, we prove lifespan estimates in terms of the $L^2-$concentration of the second fundamental form of the initial data and we show existence of blowup limits. Under special condition both on the initial data and on the target manifold, we prove a long time existence result for the flow and subconvergence to a critical immersion.
Using the results of \cite{P1}, we get some estimates of warping functions for isometric immersions by changing the target manifolds by some types of Riemannian manifolds: constant space forms and Hermitian symmetric spaces. And we deal with equality cases and obtain their applications. Finally, we give some open problems.
We introduce a family of variational functionals for spinor fields on a compact Riemann surface $M$ that can be used to find close-to-conformal immersions of $M$ into $\mathbb{R}^3$ in a prescribed regular homotopy class. Numerical experiments indicate that, by taking suitable limits, minimization of these functionals can also yield piecewise smooth isometric immersions of a prescribed Riemannian metric on $M$.
An isometric immersion of a Riemannian manifold M into a Riemannian manifold N gives rise in a natural way to the immersion of the tangent bundle TM into the tangent bundle TN with a non-degenerate g- natural metric G.
We consider critical points of the functionals $Π$ and $Ψ$ defined as the global $L^2$-norm of the second fundamental form and mean curvature vector of isometric immersions of compact Riemannian manifolds into a background Riemannian manifold, respectively, as functionals over the space of deformations of the immersion. We prove gap theorems for these functionals into hyperbolic manifolds, and show that the celebrated gap theorem for minimal immersions into the sphere can be cast as a theorem about critical points of these functionals of constant mean curvature function, and whose second funda…
In this paper, we obtain a sufficient and necessary condition for a simply connected Riemannian manifold $(M^n, g)$ to be isometrically immersed, as a submanifold with codimension $p\geq 1$, into the product $S^k\times H^{n+p-k}$ of sphere and hyperboloid.
A triharmonic map is a critical point of the 3-energy in the space of smooth maps between two Riemannian manifolds. We study a triharmonic isometric immersion into a space form of non-positively constant curvature. We show that if the domain is complete and both the 4-enegy and the L^4-norm of the tension field are finite, then such an immersion is minimal.
In this paper we consider on a complete Riemannian manifold $M$ an immersed totally geodesic hypersurface $\Si$ existing together with an immersed submanifold $N$ without focal points. No curvature condition is needed. We obtained several connectedness results relating the topologies of $M$ and $\Si$ which depend on the codimension of $N$.
In this paper we are concerned with harmonic maps and minimal immersions defined on compact Riemannian manifolds and with values in homogenous strongly harmonic manifolds. We show some results on the Morse index by varying these maps along suitable conformal vector fields. We obtain also that they are global maxima on some subspaces of the eigenspaces corresponding to the nonvanishing eigenvalues of the Laplacian operator on the target manifolds.
An isometric immersion of a Riemannian manifold $M$ into a Riemannian manifold $N$ gives rise in a natural way to variety of immersions into the tangent bundle $TN$ with a non-degenerate $g-$ natural metric $G$. In the paper we introduce and study an immersion into $TN$ defined by the immersion $f:M\longrightarrow N$ itself and the normal bundle.
We show that for an isometric immersion of a complete Riemannian manifold into a Riemannian manifold with non-positive curvature, the norm of the mean curvature vector field is square integrable, then it is minimal. This is a partial affirmative answer of the B. Y. Chen's conjecture.
This thesis mainly treats two developments of the classical theory of hypersurfaces inside pseudo-Riemannian space forms. The former - a joint work with Francesco Bonsante - consists in the study of immersions of smooth manifolds into holomorphic Riemannian space forms of constant curvature -1 (including SL(2,C) with a multiple of its Killing form): this leads to a Gauss-Codazzi theorem, it suggests an approach to holomorphic transitioning of immersions into pseudo-Riemannian space forms, a trick to construct holomorphic maps into the PSL(2,C)-character variety, and leads to a restatement of B…
In this paper we show explicit examples of several families of immersions with constant mean curvature and non constant principal curvatures, in semi-riemannian manifolds with constant sectional curvature. In particular, we prove that every h in [-1,-2 sqrt{n-1}/n) can be realized as the constant curvature of a complete immersion of S_1^{n-1} x R in the (n+1)-dimensional de Sitter space S_1^{n+1}. We provide 3 types of immersions with cmc in the Minkowski space, 5 types of immersion with cmc in the de Sitter space and 5 types of immersion with cmc in the anti de Sitter space. At the end of the…
We study biharmonic maps between Riemannian manifolds with finite energy and finite bi-energy. We show that if the domain is complete and the target of non-positive curvature, then such a map is harmonic. We then give applications to isometric immersions and horizontally conformal submersions.
In the paper we prove integral formulae for a Riemannian manifold endowed with $k>2$ orthogonal complementary distributions, which generalize well-known formula for $k=2$ and give applications to splitting and isometric immersions of Riemannian manifolds, in particular, multiply warped products, and to hypersurfaces with $k>2$ distinct principal curvatures of constant multiplicities.
We prove the nonexistence of a proper singular Riemannian foliation admitting section in compact manifolds of nonpositive curvature. Then we give a global description of proper singular Riemannian foliations admitting sections on Hadamard manifolds. In addition by using the theory of taut immersions we provide a short proof of this result in the special case of a polar action.
We give some fundamental properties of the induced structures on submanifolds immersed in almost product or locally product Riemannian manifolds. We study the induced structure by the composition of two isometric immersions on submanifolds in an almost product Riemannian manifold. We give an effective construction for some induced structures on submanifolds of codimension 1 or 2 in Euclidean space.
We are concerned with the global weak rigidity of the Gauss-Codazzi-Ricci (GCR) equations on Riemannian manifolds and the corresponding isometric immersions of Riemannian manifolds into the Euclidean spaces. We develop a unified intrinsic approach to establish the global weak rigidity of both the GCR equations and isometric immersions of the Riemannian manifolds, independent of the local coordinates, and provide further insights of the previous local results and arguments. The critical case has also been analyzed. To achieve this, we first reformulate the GCR equations with div-curl structure …
First I will explain my motivation to introduce the $δ$-invariants for Riemannian manifolds. I will also recall the notions of ideal immersions and best ways of living. Then I will present a few of the many applications of $δ$-invariants to several areas in mathematics. Finally, I will present two optimal inequalities involving $δ$-invariants for Lagrangian submanifolds obtained very recently in joint papers with F. Dillen, J. Van der Veken and L. Vrancken.
In this paper we prove two inequalities relating the warping function to various curvature terms, for warped products isometrically immersed in Riemannian manifolds. This extends work of B. Y. Chen for the case of immersions into space forms. Finally we give an application where the target manifold is the Clifford torus.
This work has two main purposes. The first aim is to study isotropic Riemannian maps as a generalization of isotropic immersions. For this purpose, the concept of isotropic Riemannian map is presented, an example is given and a characterization is obtained. The second aim is to study the helices along Riemannian map. For this purpose, by using the notion of isotropic Riemannian map and the notion of helix on the manifold, a characterization is obtained for the transportation of a helix on the total manifold to the target manifold along a Riemannian map.
In this paper we investigate the existence of ``partially'' isometric immersions. These are maps f:M->R^q which, for a given Riemannian manifold M, are isometries on some sub-bundle H of TM. The concept of free maps, which is essential in the Nash--Gromov theory of isometric immersions, is replaced here by that of H-free maps, i.e. maps whose restriction to H is free. We prove, under suitable conditions on the dimension q of the Euclidean space, that H-free maps are generic and we provide, for the smallest possible value of q, explicit expressions for H-free maps in the following three setting…
We give a necessary and sufficient condition for an n-dimensional Riemannian manifold to be isometrically immersed in S^n x R or H^n x R in terms of its first and second fundamental forms and of the projection of the vertical vector field on its tangent plane. We deduce the existence of a one-parameter family of isometric minimal deformations of a given minimal surface in S^2 x R or H^2 x R, obtained by rotating the shape operator.
In this article, we study minimal isometric immersions of Kähler manifolds into product of two real space forms. We analyse the obstruction conditions to the existence of pluriharmonic isometric immersions of a Kähler manifold into those spaces and we prove that the only ones into $\mathbb{S}^{m-1}\times\mathbb{R}$ and $\mathbb{H}^{m-1}\times \mathbb{R}$ are the minimal isometric immersions of Riemannian surfaces. Futhermore, we show that the existence of a minimal isometric immersion of a Kähler manifold $M^{2n}$ into $\mathbb{S}^{m-1}\times\mathbb{R}$ and $\mathbb{S}^{m-k}\times \mathbb{H}^k…
We show that the quantization of energy for Willmore spheres into closed Riemannian manifolds holds provided that the Willmore energy and the area are uniformly bounded. The analogous energy quantization result holds for Willmore surfaces of arbitrary genus, under the additional assumptions that the immersion maps weakly converge to a limiting (possibly branched, weak immersion) map from the same surface, and that the conformal structures stay in a compact domain of the moduli space.
