We study two aspects of the loop group formulation for isometric immersions with flat normal bundle of space forms. The first aspect is to examine the loop group maps along different ranges of the loop parameter. This leads to various equivalences between global isometric immersion problems among different space forms and pseudo-Riemannian space forms. As a corollary, we obtain a non-immersibility theorem for spheres into certain pseudo-Riemannian spheres and hyperbolic spaces.
The second aspect pursued is to clarify the relationship between the loop group formulation of isometric immersions of space forms and that of pluriharmonic maps into symmetric spaces. We show that the objects in the first class are, in the real analytic case, extended pluriharmonic maps into certain symmetric spaces which satisfy an extra reality condition along a totally real submanifold. We show how to construct such pluriharmonic maps for general symmetric spaces from curved flats, using a generalised DPW method.
Using a bigraded differential complex depending on the CR and pseudohermitian structure, we give a characterization of three-dimensional strongly pseudoconvex pseudo-hermitian CR-manifolds isometrically immersed in Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^n$ in terms of an integral representation of Weierstrass type. Restricting to the case of immersions in $\mathbb{R}^4$, we study harmonicity conditions for such immersions and give a complete classification of CR-pluriharmonic immersions.
In this article, we study minimal isometric immersions of Kähler manifolds into product of two real space forms. We analyse the obstruction conditions to the existence of pluriharmonic isometric immersions of a Kähler manifold into those spaces and we prove that the only ones into $\mathbb{S}^{m-1}\times\mathbb{R}$ and $\mathbb{H}^{m-1}\times \mathbb{R}$ are the minimal isometric immersions of Riemannian surfaces. Futhermore, we show that the existence of a minimal isometric immersion of a Kähler manifold $M^{2n}$ into $\mathbb{S}^{m-1}\times\mathbb{R}$ and $\mathbb{S}^{m-k}\times \mathbb{H}^k…
We prove uniqueness of smooth isometric immersions within the class of negatively curved corrugated two-dimensional immersions embedded into $\mathbb{R}^3$. The main tool we use is the relative entropy method employed in the setting of differential geometry for the Gauss-Codazzi system. The result allows us to compare also two solutions to the Gauss-Codazzi system that correspond to a smooth and a $C^{1,1}$ isometric immersion of not necessarily the same metric and prove continuous dependence of their second fundamental forms in terms of the metric and initial data in $L^2$.
We prove the existence of $C^{1,1}$ isometric immersions of several classes of metrics on surfaces $(\mathcal{M},g)$ into the three-dimensional Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^3$, where the metrics $g$ have strictly negative curvature. These include the standard hyperbolic plane, generalised helicoid-type metrics and generalised Enneper metrics. Our proof is based on the method of compensated compactness and invariant regions in hyperbolic conservation laws, together with several observations on the geometric quantities (Gauss curvature, metric components etc.) of negatively curved surfaces.
Geometry of conformal minimal two-spheres immersed in $G(2,6;\mathbb{R})$ is studied in this paper by harmonic maps. We construct a non-homogeneous constant curved minimal two-sphere in $G(2,6;\mathbb{R})$, and give a classification theorem of linearly full conformal minimal immersions of constant curvature from $S^2$ to $G(2,6;\mathbb{R})$, or equivalently, a complex hyperquadric $Q_{4}$, which illustrates minimal two-spheres of constant curvature in $Q_{4}$ are in general not congruent.
We prove the nonexistence of a proper singular Riemannian foliation admitting section in compact manifolds of nonpositive curvature. Then we give a global description of proper singular Riemannian foliations admitting sections on Hadamard manifolds. In addition by using the theory of taut immersions we provide a short proof of this result in the special case of a polar action.
This paper extends, in a sharp way, the famous Efimov's Theorem to immersed ends in $\real^3$. More precisely, let $M$ be a non-compact connected surface with compact boundary. Then there is no complete isometric immersion of $M$ into $\Bbb R^3$ satisfying that $\int_M |K|=+\infty$ and $K\le-κ<0$, where $κ$ is a positive constant and $K$ is the Gaussian curvature of $M$. In particular Efimov's Theorem holds for complete Hadamard immersed surfaces, whose Gaussian curvature $K$ is bounded away from zero outside a compact set.
A Ricci surface is defined as a Riemannian surface $(M,g_M)$ whose Gauss curvature satisfies the differential equation $KΔK + g_M(dK,dK) + 4K^3=0$. Andrei Moroianu and Sergiu Moroianu proved that a Ricci surface with non-positive Gauss curvature admits locally a minimal immersion into $\mathbb{R}^3$. In this paper, we are interested in studying non-compact orientable Ricci surfaces with catenoidal ends. We use an analogue of the Weierstrass data to obtain some classification results for such Ricci surfaces. We also give an existence result for positive genus Ricci surfaces with catenoidal ends…
The Teichmüller harmonic map flow deforms both a map from an oriented closed surface $M$ into an arbitrary closed Riemannian manifold, and a constant curvature metric on $M$, so as to reduce the energy of the map as quickly as possible [16]. The flow then tries to converge to a branched minimal immersion when it can [16,18]. The only thing that can stop the flow is a finite-time degeneration of the metric on $M$ where one or more collars are pinched. In this paper we show that finite-time degeneration cannot happen in the case that the target has nonpositive sectional curvature, and indeed mor…
We provide a classification of compact Euclidean submanifolds $M^n\subset{\mathbb{R}}^{n+2}$ with nonnegative sectional curvature, for $n\ge 3$. The classification is in terms of the induced metric (including the diffeomorphism classification of the manifold), and we study the structure of the immersions as well. In particular, we provide the first known example of a nonorientable quotient $({\mathbb{S}}^{n-1}\times{\mathbb{S}}^1)/{\mathbb{Z}_2}\subset{\mathbb{R}}^{n+2}$ with nonnegative curvature. For the 3-dimensional case, we show that either the universal cover is isometric to ${\mathbb{S}…
In this paper we study maps (curved flats) into symmetric spaces which are tangent at each point to a flat of the symmetric space. Important examples of such maps arise from isometric immersions of space forms into space forms via their Gauss maps. Further examples are found in conformal geometry, e.g. the curved flats obtained from isothermic surfaces and conformally flat 3-folds in the 4-sphere. Curved flats admit a 1-parameter family of deformations (spectral parameter) which enables us to make contact to integrable system theory. In fact, we give a recipe to construct curved flats (and thu…
Let U be a real form of a complex semisimple Lie group, and tau, sigma, a pair of commuting involutions on U. This data corresponds to a reflective submanifold of a symmetric space, U/K. We define an associated integrable system, and describe how to produce solutions from curved flats. The solutions are shown to correspond to various special submanifolds, depending on which homogeneous space U/L one projects to. We apply the construction to a question which generalizes, to the context of reflective submanifolds of arbitrary symmetric spaces, the problem of isometric immersions of space forms w…
