We study families of ropes of any codimension that are supported on lines. In particular, this includes all non-reduced curves of degree two. We construct suitable smooth parameter spaces and conclude that all ropes of fixed degree and genus lie in the same component of the corresponding Hilbert scheme. We show that this component is generically smooth if the genus is small enough unless the characteristic of the ground field is two and the curves under consideration have degree two. In this case the component is non-reduced.
In this article we present a unified way to smooth certain multiple structures called ropes on smooth varieties. We prove that most ropes of arbitrary multiplicity, supported on smooth curves can be smoothed. By a rope being smoothable we mean that the rope is the flat limit of a family of smooth, irreducible curves. To construct a smoothing, we connect, on the one hand, deformations of a finite morphism to projective space and, on the other hand, morphisms from a rope to projective space. We also prove a general result of independent interest, namely, finite covers onto smooth irreducible cur…
Let $H$ be the Hilbert scheme of curves in complex projective $3$-space, with $d\geq 3$ and genus $g \leq (d-2)^2/4$. A complete, explicit description of the cone of curves and the ample cone of $H$ is given. From this, partial results on the group $\mathop{Aut}(H)$ are deduced.
We describe the possible restrictions of the cotangent bundle Ω_{\PP^N} to an elliptic curve C \subset \PP^N. We apply this in positive characteristic to the computation of the Hilbert-Kunz function of a homogeneous R_+-primary ideal I \subset R in the graded section ring R = \bigoplus_{n \in \NN} Γ(C, Ø(n)).
Progress on the problem whether the Hilbert schemes of locally Cohen-Macaulay curves in projective 3 space are connected has been hampered by the lack of an answer to a question that was raised by Robin Hartshorne in his paper "On the connectedness of the Hilbert scheme of curves in projective 3 space" Comm. Algebra 28 (2000) and more recently in the open problems list of the 2010 AIM workshop Components of Hilbert Schemes available at http://aimpl.org/hilbertschemes: does there exist a flat irreducible family of curves whose general member is a union of d disjoint lines on a smooth quadric su…
Let $ρ_C$ be the regularity of the Hilbert function of a projective curve $C$ in $\mathbb P^n_K$ over an algebraically closed field $K$ and $α_1,...,α_{n-1}$ be minimal degrees for which there exists a complete intersection of type $(α_1,...,α_{n-1})$ containing the curve $C$. Then the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of $C$ is upper bounded by $\max\{ρ_C+1,α_1+...+α_{n-1}-(n-2)\}$. We study and, for space curves, refine the above bound providing several examples.
In this paper, we show the full flag Hilbert scheme of points of nodal curves has only complete intersection singularities. We study the Hilbert scheme of points of the cusp curve and show the punctual Hilbert scheme is isomorphic to \mathbb{P}^1. Furthermore Hilbert scheme has only one singularty along the punctual one.
We study Hilbert-Kunz multiplicity of non-singular curves in positive characteristic. We analyse the relationship between the Frobenius semistability of the kernel sheaf associated with the curve and its ample line bundle, and the HK multiplicity. This leads to a lower bound, achieved iff the kernel sheaf is Frobenius semistable, and otherwise to formulas for the HK multiplicity in terms of parameters measuring the failure of Frobenius semistability. As a byproduct, an explicit example of a vector bundle on a curve is given whose $n$-th iterated Frobenius pullback is not semistable, while its …
Properties of the recently reported homogeneous Hilbert curves are deduced and reported. The nature of the affine transformations involved in the construction of the Hilbert curves is explored. The analytical representation of proper and improper Hilbert curves is obtained. The one-to-one mapping between two Hilbert curves is deduced. Recursive relation of Hilbert curves is reported.
We determine the Hilbert-Kunz function of plane elliptic curves in odd characteristic, as well as over arbitrary fields the generalized Hilbert-Kunz functions of nodal cubic curves. Together with results of K. Pardue and P. Monsky, this completes the list of Hilbert-Kunz functions of plane cubics. Combining these results with the calculation of the (generalized) Hilbert-Kunz function of Cayley's cubic surface, it follows that in each degree and over any field of positive characteristic there are curves resp. surfaces taking on the minimally possible Hilbert-Kunz multiplicity.
This paper concerns the question of whether a more direct limit can be used to obtain the limit Hilbert-Kunz multiplicity, a possible candidate for a characteristic zero Hilbert-Kunz multiplicity. The main goal is to establish an affirmative answer for one of the main cases for which the limit Hilbert-Kunz multiplicity is even known to exist, namely that of graded ideals in the homogeneous coordinate ring of smooth projective curves. The proof involves more careful estimates of bounds found independently by Brenner and Trivedi on the dimensions of the cohomologies of twists of the syzygy bundl…
We consider the Hilbert scheme H(d,g) of space curves C with homogeneous ideal I(C):=H_{*}^0(\sI_C) and Rao module M:=H_{*}^1(\sI_C). By taking suitable generizations (deformations to a more general curve) C' of C, we simplify the minimal free resolution of I(C) by e.g. making consecutive free summands (ghost-terms) disappear in a free resolution of I(C'). Using this for Buchsbaum curves of diameter one (M_v \ne 0 for only one v), we establish a one-to-one correspondence between the set \sS of irreducible components of H(d,g) that contain (C) and a set of minimal 5-tuples that specializes in a…
We study the existence of components with the expected number of moduli of the Hilbert scheme of integral nodal curves $C \subset \mathbb {P}^r$ with prescribed degree, arithmetic genus and number of singular points.
We study the bounded negativity conjecture for non-quaternionic Hilbert modular surfaces and give an explicit bound for the special case of Hirzebruch-Zagier curves on Hilbert modular surfaces.
We establish GIT semistability of the 2nd Hilbert point of every Gieseker-Petri general canonical curve by a simple geometric argument. As a consequence, we obtain an upper bound on slopes of general families of Gorenstein curves. We also explore the question of what replaces hyperelliptic curves in the GIT quotients of the Hilbert scheme of canonical curves.
This paper is a sequel to arXiv:1109.4986, where we proved that a general smooth curve of odd genus, canonically or bicanonically embedded, has semistable finite Hilbert points. Here, we prove that a generic canonically embedded curve of even genus has semistable finite Hilbert points. More precisely, we prove that a generic canonically embedded trigonal curve of even genus has semistable finite Hilbert points. Furthermore, we show that the analogous result fails for bielliptic curves. Namely, the Hilbert points of bielliptic curves are asymptotically semistable but become non-semistable below…
Pfister and Steenbrink studied punctual Hilbert schemes for irreducible curve singularities. In particular, they investigated the structure of special punctual Hilbert schemes for certain monomial curve singularities. In this paper, we study the punctual Hilbert schemes of all degrees for the curve singularities of types $E_6$ and $E_8$. For our analysis, we introduce computational algorithms to decompose a punctual Hilbert schemes into affine cells. We also use the theory of Gröbner basis and known results about the compactified Jacobian of singular curves to prove our main theorems.
We study completely the Hilbert scheme and punctual Hilbert scheme of a nodal curve, and the relative Hilbert scheme of a family of curves acquiring a node. The results are then extended, less completely, to flag Hilbert schemes, parametrizing chains of subschemes. We find, notably, that if the total space $X$ of a family $X/B$ is smooth (over an algebraically closed field $\k$), then the relative Hilbert scheme $Hilb_m(X/B)$ is smooth over $\k$ and the flag Hilbert schemes are normal and locally complete intersection, but generally singular.
An inventory of all possible homogenous Hilbert curves in two dimensions are reported. Six new Hilbert curves are described by introducing the reversion operation in the construction algorithm. For each curve, the set of affine transformation defining the generation process is reported. Finally, each curve is also described in terms of a tag system.
Hilbert curves of special varieties like Fano manifolds of low coindex as well as fibrations having such a manifold as general fiber, endowed with appropriate polarizations, are investigated. In particular, all most relevant varieties arising in adjunction theory are characterized in terms of their Hilbert curves.
We discuss two conjectures by Francesco Severi and Joe Harris about the irreducibility and the dimension of the Hilbert scheme parameterizing smooth projective curves of given degree and genus.
In this article, by using the technique of gluing semigroups, we give infinitely many families of 1-dimensional local rings with non-decreasing Hilbert functions. More significantly, these are local rings whose associated graded rings are not necessarily Cohen-Macaulay. In this sense, we give an effective technique to construct large families of 1-dimensional Gorenstein local rings associated to monomial curves, which support Rossi's conjecture saying that every Gorenstein local ring has non-decreasing Hilbert function.
We review the present state of the problem, for each degree $d$ and genus $g$, is the Hilbert scheme of locally Cohen--Macaulay curves in ${\mathbb P}^3$ connected?
We prove that a generic canonically or bicanonically embedded smooth curve has semistable m-th Hilbert points for all m. We also prove that a generic bicanonically embedded smooth curve has stable m-th Hilbert points for all m \geq 3. In the canonical case, this is accomplished by proving finite Hilbert semistability of special singular curves with G_m-action, namely the canonically embedded balanced ribbon and the canonically embedded balanced double A_{2k+1}-curve. In the bicanonical case, we prove finite Hilbert stability of special hyperelliptic curves, namely Wiman curves. Finally, we giv…
We construct the Hilbert compactification of the universal moduli space of semistable vector bundles over smooth curves. The Hilbert compactification is the GIT quotient of some open part of an appropriate Hilbert scheme of curves in a Grassmannian. It has all the properties asked for by Teixidor.
In this article, we study the Hilbert scheme of generically non-reduced curves in $\mathbb{P}^3$. We prove the existence of generically non-reduced curves in $\mathbb{P}^3$ for which there exist infinitesimal deformations of the curve that do not induce deformations of the associated reduced scheme. We show that such infinitesimal deformations contribute to the non-reducedness of the corresponding Hilbert scheme. We introduce the notion of extension of curves and prove that such infinitesimal deformations (such that the associated reduced scheme does not deform) are inherited by the extended c…
The motivic Hilbert zeta function of a variety is the generating function for classes in the Grothendieck ring of varieties of Hilbert schemes of points of the variety. In this paper, the motivic Hilbert zeta function of a reduced curve is shown to be rational.
Algebraic curves in Hilbert modular surfaces that are totally geodesic for the Kobayashi metric have very interesting geometric and arithmetic properties, e.g. they are rigid. There are very few methods known to construct such algebraic geodesics that we call Kobayashi curves. We give an explicit way of constructing Kobayashi curves using determinants of derivatives of theta functions. This construction also allows to calculate the Euler characteristics of the Teichmueller curves constructed by McMullen using Prym covers.
In this paper we introduce an effective method to construct rational deformations between couples of Borel-fixed ideals. These deformations are governed by flat families, so that they correspond to rational curves on the Hilbert scheme. Looking globally at all the deformations among Borel-fixed ideals defining points on the same Hilbert scheme, we are able to give a new proof of the connectedness of the Hilbert scheme and to introduce a new criterion to establish whenever a set of points defined by Borel ideals lies on a common component of the Hilbert scheme. The paper contains a detailed alg…
In this paper we determine the irreducible components of the Hilbert schemes H(4,g) of locally Cohen-Macaulay space curves of degree four and arbitrary arithmetic genus g. We show that these Hilbert schemes are connected, in spite of having about g^2/24 irreducible components. For g < -2 we exhibit a component that is disjoint from the component of extremal curves and use this to give a counterexample to a conjecture of Ait-Amrane and Perrin.
We propose a conjecture on the generating series of Chern numbers of tautological bundles on Hilbert schemes of points on curves and establish the rank 1 and rank -1 case of this conjecture. Thus we compute explicitly the generating series of integrals of the Segre classes of tautological bundles of line bundles on curves, which has a similar structure as Lehn's conjecture for surfaces.
Consider a family of integral complex locally planar curves. We show that under some assumptions on the basis, the relative nested Hilbert scheme is smooth. In this case, the decomposition theorem of Beilinson, Bernstein and Deligne asserts that the pushforward of the constant sheaf on the relative nested Hilbert scheme splits as a direct sum of shifted semisimple perverse sheaves. We will show that no summand is supported in positive codimension.
We study the structure of the relative Hilbert scheme for a family of nodal (or smooth) curves via its natural cycle map to the relative symmetric product. We show that the cycle map is the blowing up of the discriminant locus, which consists of cycles with multiple points. We discuss some applications and connections, notably with birational geometry and intersection theory on Hilbert schemes of smooth surfaces. Revised version corrects some minor errors.
We identify several classes of curves $C:f=0$, for which the Hilbert vector of the Jacobian module $N(f)$ can be completely determined, namely the 3-syzygy curves, the maximal Tjurina curves and the nodal curves, having only rational irreducible components. A result due to Hartshorne, on the cohomology of some rank 2 vector bundles on $\mathbb{P}^2$, is used to get a sharp lower bound for the initial degree of the Jacobian module $N(f)$, under a semistability condition.
We obtain effective results for the global generation of pluritheta line bundles on moduli spaces of vector bundles on curves. The main ingredient is an independent result giving an upper bound on the dimension of the Hilbert scheme of coherent quotients of a given vector bundle.
We prove by Hilbert-Mumford criterion that a slope stable polarized weighted pointed nodal curve is Chow asymptotic stable. This generalizes the result of Caporaso on stability of polarized nodal curves, and of Hasset on weighted pointed stable curves polarized by the weighted dualizing sheaves. It also solved a question raised by Mumford and Gieseker to prove the Chow asymptotic stability of stable nodal curves by Hilbert-Mumford criterion.
We study the cohomology of Jacobians and Hilbert schemes of points on reduced and locally planar curves, which are however allowed to be singular and reducible. We show that the cohomologies of all Hilbert schemes of all subcurves are encoded in the cohomologies of the fine compactified Jacobians of connected subcurves, via the perverse Leray filtration.
Consider a family of integral complex locally planar curves whose relative Hilbert scheme of points is smooth. The decomposition theorem of Beilinson, Bernstein, and Deligne asserts that the pushforward of the constant sheaf on the relative Hilbert scheme splits as a direct sum of shifted semisimple perverse sheaves. We will show that no summand is supported in positive codimension. It follows that the perverse filtration on the cohomology of the compactified Jacobian of an integral plane curve encodes the cohomology of all Hilbert schemes of points on the curve. Globally, it follows that a fa…
We give a method of counting the number of curves with a given type of singularity in a suitably ample linear series on a smooth surface using punctual Hilbert schemes. The types of singulaties for which our methods suffice include the topological type with local equation x^a +y^b with b-1 < a < 3b+1. We work out the example of curves with the analytic type of singularity with local equation x^2+y^n for 1<n<9.
We prove arithmetic Riemann-Roch and Hilbert-Samuel type formulae for pointed stable curves. We give applications to volumes of lattices of integral cusps forms for pointed stable curves of genus 0.
We develop a new general method for computing the decomposition type of the normal bundle to a projective rational curve. This method is then used to detect and explain an example of a Hilbert scheme that parametrizes all the rational curves in $\mathbb{P}^s$ with a given decomposition type of the normal bundle and that has exactly two irreducible components. This gives a negative answer to the very old question whether such Hilbert schemes are always irreducible. We also characterize smooth non-degenerate rational curves contained in rational normal scroll surfaces in terms of the splitting t…
We study the relative Hilbert scheme of a family of nodal (or smooth) curves, over a base of arbitrary dimension, via its (birational) cycle map, going to the relative symmetric product. We show the cycle map is the blowing up of the discriminant locus, which consists of cycles with multiple points. We determine the relevant cotangent sheaves and complexes. We determine the structure of certain projective bundles called node scrolls, which play an important role in the geometry of Hilbert schemes.
We establish, in the setting of Arakelov geometry over adelic curves, an arithmetic Hilbert-Samuel theorem describing the asymptotic behaviour of the metrized graded linear series of an adelic line bundle in terms of its arithmetic intersection number. We then study positivity conditions of adelic line bundles.
In this paper, we prove that a smooth hyperbolic projective curve over a finite field can be recovered from L-functions associated to the Hilbert class field of the curve and its constant field extensions. As a consequence, we give a new proof of a result of Mochizuki and Tamagawa that two such curves with isomorphic fundamental groups are themselves isomorphic.
Consider a component of the Hilbert scheme whose general point corresponds to a degree d genus g smooth irreducible and nondegenerate curve in a projective variety X. We give lower bounds for the dimension of such a component when X is P^3, P^4 or a smooth quadric threefold in P^4 respectively. Those bounds make sense from the asymptotic viewpoint if we fix d and let g vary. Some examples are constructed using determinantal varieties to show the sharpness of the bounds for d and g in a certain range. The results can also be applied to study rigid curves.
We work out the action of the blowup or 'discriminant' polarization on some natural cycles in the Hilbert scheme, including generalized diagonals and cycles, called 'node scrolls', parametrizing schemes supported on singular points. We derive an intersection calculus for Chern classes of tautologic…
Let $\mathcal{I}_{d,g,r}$ be the union of irreducible components of the Hilbert scheme whose general points correspond to smooth irreducible non-degenerate curves of degree $d$ and genus $g$ in $\mathbb{P}^r$. We use families of curves on cones to show that under certain numerical assumptions for $d$, $g$ and $r$, the scheme $\mathcal{I}_{d,g,r}$ acquires generically smooth components whose general points correspond to curves that are double covers of irrational curves. In particular, in the case $ρ(d,g,r) := g-(r+1)(g-d+r) \geq 0$ we construct explicitly a regular component that is different …
We denote by $\mathcal{H}_{d,g,r}$ the Hilbert scheme of smooth curves, which is the union of components whose general point corresponds to a smooth irreducible and non-degenerate curve of degree $d$ and genus $g$ in $\PP^r$. In this note, we show that any non-empty $\mathcal{H}_{g+2,g,4}$ is irreducible without any restriction on the genus $g$. Our result augments the irreducibility result obtained earlier by Hristo Iliev(2006), in which several low genus $g\le 10$ cases have been left untreated.
We generalize Macdonald's formula for the cohomology of Hilbert schemes of points on a curve from smooth curves to curves with planar singularities: we relate the cohomology of the Hilbert schemes to the cohomology of the compactified Jacobian of the curve. The new formula is a consequence of a stronger identity between certain perverse sheaves defined by a family of curves satisfying mild conditions. The proof makes an essential use of Ngo's support theorem for compactified Jacobians and generalizes this theorem to the relative Hilbert scheme of such families. As a consequence, we generalize …
We calculate the Picard group, over the integers, of the Hilbert scheme of smooth, irreducible, non-degenerate curves of degree $d$and genus $g \geq 4$ in ${\Bbb P}^r$, in the case when $d \geq 2g+1 $ and $r \leq d-g$. We express the classes of the generators in terms of some ``natural'' divisor classes.
