Teichmueller curves are geodesic discs in Teichmueller space that project to algebraic curves $C$ in the moduli space $M_g$. Some Teichmüller curves can be considered as components of Hurwitz spaces. We show that the absolute Galois group $G_\QQ$ acts faithfully on the set of these embedded curves. We also compare the action of $G_\QQ$ on $π_1(C)$ with the one on $π_1(M_g)$ and obtain a relation in the Grothendieck-Teichmueller group, seemingly independent of the known ones.
Teichmueller curves are geodesic discs in Teichmueller space that project to an algebraic curve in the moduli space $M_g$. We show that for all $g \geq 2$ Teichmueller curves map to the locus of real multiplication in the moduli space of abelian varieties. Remark that McMullen has shown that precisely for $g=2$ the locus of real multiplication is stable under the $\SL_2(\RR)$-action on the tautological bundle $Ω\M_g$. We also show that Teichmueller curves are defined over number fields and we provide a completely algebraic description of Teichmueller curves in terms of Higgs bundles. As a cons…
We study a special Teichmueller curve in the moduli space of curves of genus 3 that is intersected by infinitely many other Teichmueller curves. The Veech group of the underlying translation surface is SL_2(Z). All occurring Teichmueller curves are induced by origamis, i.e. unramified coverings of the once punctured torus.
We construct a Teichmueller curve uniformized by the Fuchsian triangle group (m,n,\infty) for every m<n. Our construction includes the Teichmueller curves constructed by Veech and Ward as special cases. The construction essentially relies on properties of hypergeometric differential operators. For small m, we find Billiard tables that generate these Teichmueller curves. We interprete some of the so-called Lyapunov exponents of the Kontsevich--Zorich cocycle as normalized degrees of some natural line bundles on a Teichmueller curves. We determine the Lyapunov exponents for the Teichmueller curv…
We show that for each genus there are only finitely many algebraically primitive Teichmueller curves C, such that i) C lies in the hyperelliptic locus and ii) C is generated by an abelian differential with two zeros of order g-1. We prove moreover that for these Teichmueller curves the trace field of the affine group is not only totally real but cyclotomic.
We classify curves in the moduli space of curves that are both Shimura- and Teichmueller curves: Except for the moduli space of genus one curves there is only a single such curve. We start with a Hodge-theoretic description of Shimura curves and of Teichmueller curves that reveals similarities and differences of the two classes of curves. The proof of the classification relies on the geometry of square-tiled coverings and on estimating the numerical invariants of these particular fibered surfaces. Finally we translate our main result into a classification of Teichmueller curves with totally de…
We compute the class of arithmetic genus two Teichmueller curves in the Picard group of pseudo-Hilbert modular surfaces, distinguished according to their torsion order and spin invariant. As an application, we compute the number of genus two square-tiled surfaces with these invariants. The main technical tool is the computation of divisor classes of Hilbert Jacobi forms on the universal abelian surface over the pseudo-Hilbert modular surface.
Periodic points are points on Veech surfaces, whose orbit under the group of affine diffeomorphisms is finite. We characterise those points as being torsion points if the Veech surfaces is suitably mapped to its Jacobian or an appropriate factor thereof. For a primitive Veech surface in genus two we show that the only periodic points are the Weierstrass points and the singularities. Our main tool is the Hodge-theoretic characterisation of Teichmueller curves. We deduce from it a finiteness result for the Mordell-Weil group of the family of Jacobians over a Teichmueller curve.
In the moduli space M_g of genus g Riemann surfaces, consider the locus RM_O of Riemann surfaces whose Jacobians have real multiplication by the order O in a totally real number field F of degree g. If g = 2 or 3, we compute the closure of RM_O in the Deligne-Mumford compactification of M_g and the closure of the locus of eigenforms over RM_O in the Deligne-Mumford compactification of the moduli space of holomorphic one-forms. For higher genera, we give strong necessary conditions for a stable curve to be in the boundary of RM_O Boundary strata of RM_O are parameterized by configurations of el…
We study the boundary of Teichmueller disks in a partial compactification of Teichmueller space, and their image in Schottky space. We give a broad introduction to Teichmueller disks and explain the relation between Teichmueller curves and Veech groups. Furthermore, we describe Braungardt's construction of this partial compactification and compare it with the Abikoff augmented Teichmueller space. Following Masur, we give a description of Strebel rays that makes it easy to understand their end points on the boundary. This prepares the description of boundary points that a Teichmueller disk has,…
Fuchsian groups with a modular embedding have the richest arithmetic properties among non-arithmetic Fuchsian groups. But they are very rare, all known examples being related either to triangle groups or to Teichmueller curves. In Part I of this paper we study the arithmetic properties of the modular embedding and develop from scratch a theory of twisted modular forms for Fuchsian groups with a modular embedding, proving dimension formulas, coefficient growth estimates and differential equations. In Part II we provide a modular proof for an Apery-like integrality statement for solutions of Pic…
We study an example of a Teichmueller curve in the moduli space of algebraic curves of genus 2 coming from an origami S. It is particular in that its points admit the Klein four group as a subgroup of the automorphism group. We give an explicit description of its points in terms of affine plane curves, we show that the Teichmueller curve is a nonsingular, affine curve of genus 0 and we determine the number of cusps in the boundary of the moduli space.
This paper focuses on the interplay between the intersection theory and the Teichmueller dynamics on the moduli space of curves. As applications, we study the cycle class of strata of the Hodge bundle, present an algebraic method to calculate the class of the divisor parameterizing abelian differentials with a non-simple zero, and verify a number of extremal effective divisors on the moduli space of pointed curves in low genus.
We prove that the moduli space of compact genus three Riemann surfaces contains only finitely many algebraically primitive Teichmueller curves. For the stratum consisting of holomorphic one-forms in genus three with a single zero, our approach to finiteness uses the Harder-Narasimhan filtration of the Hodge bundle over a Teichmueller curve to obtain new information on the locations of the zeros of eigenforms. By passing to the boundary of moduli space, this gives explicit constraints on the cusps of Teichmueller curves in terms of cross-ratios of six points on a projective line. These constrai…
We show that for many strata of Abelian differentials in low genus the sum of Lyapunov exponents for the Teichmueller geodesic flow is the same for all Teichmueller curves in that stratum, hence equal to the sum of Lyapunov exponents for the whole stratum. This behavior is due to the disjointness property of Teichmueller curves with various geometrically defined divisors on moduli spaces of curves.
We give an algebraic way of distinguishing the components of the exceptional strata of quadratic differentials in genus three and four. The complete list of these strata is (9, -1), (6,3,-1), (3,3,3, -1) in genus three and (12), (9,3), (6,6), (6,3,3) and (3,3,3,3) in genus four. This result is part of a more general investigation of disjointness of Teichmueller curves with divisors of Brill-Noether type on the moduli space of curves. As a result we show that for many strata of quadratic differentials in low genus the sum of Lyapunov exponents for the Teichmueller geodesic flow is the same for …
We describe globally nilpotent differential operators of rank 2 defined over a number field whose monodromy group is a nonarithmetic Fuchsian group. We show that these differential operators have an S-integral solution. These differential operators are naturally associated with Teichmueller curves in genus 2. They are counterexamples to conjectures by Chudnovsky--Chudnovsky and Dwork. We also determine the field of moduli of primitive Teichmueller curves in genus 2, and an explicit equation in some cases.
We describe the arrangement of all Galois lines for the Giulietti--Korchmáros curve in the projective $3$-space. As an application, we determine the set of all Galois points for a plane model of the GK curve. This curve possesses many Galois points.
Algebraic curves in Hilbert modular surfaces that are totally geodesic for the Kobayashi metric have very interesting geometric and arithmetic properties, e.g. they are rigid. There are very few methods known to construct such algebraic geodesics that we call Kobayashi curves. We give an explicit way of constructing Kobayashi curves using determinants of derivatives of theta functions. This construction also allows to calculate the Euler characteristics of the Teichmueller curves constructed by McMullen using Prym covers.
A criterion for the existence of a birational embedding into a projective plane with non-collinear Galois points for algebraic curves is presented. A new example of a plane curve with non-collinear Galois points as an application is described. Furthermore, a new characterization of the Fermat curve in terms of non-collinear Galois points is presented.
The arrangement of all Galois lines for the Artin-Schreier-Mumford curve in the projective 3-space is described. It may be surprising that there exist infinitely many Galois lines intersecting this curve.
We characterize plane rational curves of degree four with two or more inner Galois points. A computer verifies the existence of plane rational curves of degree four with three inner Galois points. This would be the first example of a curve with exactly three them. Our result implies that Miura's bound is sharp for rational curves.
A criterion for the existence of a birational embedding with two Galois points for quotient curves is presented. We apply our criterion to several curves, for example, some cyclic subcovers of the Giulietti-Korchmaros curve or of the curves constructed by Skabelund. They are new examples of plane curves with two Galois points.
A point on a plane curve is said to be Galois (for the curve) if the projection from the point as a map from the curve to a line induces a Galois extension of function fields. It is known that the number of Galois points is finite except for a certain explicit example. We establish upper bounds for the number of Galois points for all plane curves other than the example in terms of the genus, degree and the generic order of contact, and settle curves attaining the bounds.
We show that two curves of Artin-Schreier type have a birational embedding into a projective plane with two Galois points. As a consequence, all curves with large automorphism groups in the classification list by Henn have a birational embedding with two Galois points.
We classify plane curves $\mathcal{C}$ possessing two Galois points $P_1$ and $P_2 \in \mathbb{P}^2 \setminus \mathcal{C}$ such that the associated Galois groups $G_{P_1}$ and $G_{P_2}$ generate the semidirect product $G_{P_1}\rtimes G_{P_2}$. New examples of plane curves with two Galois points are also presented.
For a plane curve, a point on the projective plane is said to be Galois if the projection from the point as a map from the curve to a line induces a Galois extension of function fields. We present upper bounds for the number of Galois points, if the genus is greater than zero. If the curve is not an immersed curve, then we have at most two Galois points. If the degree is not divisible by two nor three, then the number of outer Galois points is at most three. As a consequence, a conjecture of Yoshihara is true in these cases.
For a plane curve, a point in the projective plane is said to be Galois when the point projection induces a Galois extension of function fields. We give a new characterization of a Fermat curve whose degree minus one is a power of $p$ in characteristic $p>2$, which is sometimes called Hermitian, by the number of Galois points lying on the curve.
A criterion for the existence of a birational embedding into a projective plane with three collinear Galois points for algebraic curves is presented. The extendability of an automorphism induced by a Galois point to a linear transformation of the projective plane is also discussed, under the assumption that two Galois points exist.
A criterion for the existence of a plane model with two non-smooth Galois points for algebraic curves is presented, which is a generalization of Fukasawa's criterion for two smooth Galois points. Owing to this generalized criterion, multiplicities and order sequences at Galois points can be described in detail.
We give new examples of plane curves with two or more Galois points as a family, and describe the number of Galois points for these curves, by using finite fields.
The Dickson-Guralnick-Zieve curve over a finite field has been studied recently by Giulietti, Korchmaros and Timpanella in several points of view. In this short note, the distribution of Galois points for this curve is determined. As a consequence, a problem posed by the present author in the theory of Galois point is modified.
Let $C \subset \mathbb{P}^2$ be a plane curve of degree at least three. A point $P$ in projective plane is said to be Galois if the function field extension induced by the projection $π_P: C \dashrightarrow \mathbb P^1$ from $P$ is Galois. Further we say that a Galois point is extendable if any birational transformation induced by the Galois group can be extended to a linear transformation of the projective plane. This article is the second part of [2], where we showed that the Galois group at an extendable Galois point $P$ has a natural action on the dual curve $C^* \subset \mathbb{P}^{2*}$ w…
A criterion for the existence of a birational embedding of an algebraic curve into a projective plane with two Galois points is presented. Several novel examples of plane curves with two inner Galois points as an application are described.
A criterion for the existence of a plane model of an algebraic curve such that the Galois closures of projections from two points are the same is presented. As an application, it is proved that the Hermitian curve in positive characteristic coincides with the Galois closures of projections of some plane curve from some two non-uniform points.
There are two purposes in this article. One is to present a criterion for the existence of a birational embedding into a projective plane with inner and outer Galois points for algebraic curves. Another is to classify plane curves of degree $d$ admitting an inner Galois point $P$ and an outer Galois point $Q$ with $G_PG_Q=G_P \rtimes G_Q$ or $G_P \ltimes G_Q$, under the assumption that the characteristic $p$ is zero or $p$ does not divide $d-1$.
We show that there exists a plane curve of degree $q^3+1$ with two inner Galois points whose smooth model is the Hermitian curve of degree $q+1$, where $q$ is a power of the characteristic $p>0$. Similar results hold for the Suzuki and Ree curves respectively.
We determine the distribution of Galois points for plane curves over a finite field of $q$ elements, which are Frobenius nonclassical for different powers of $q$. This family is an important class of plane curves with many remarkable properties. It contains the Dickson-Guralnick-Zieve curve, which has been recently studied by Giulietti, Korchmaros, and Timpanella from several points of view. A problem posed by the second author in the theory of Galois points is modified.
For every odd prime number p, we give examples of non-constant smooth families of genus 2 curves over fields of characteristic p which have pro-Galois (pro-étale) covers of infinite degree with geometrically connected fibers. The Jacobians of the curves are isomorphic to products of elliptic curves.
We present four new examples of plane rational curves with two Galois points in positive characteristic, and determine the number of Galois points for three of them. Our results are related to a problem on projective linear groups.
We introduce the new notion of the "quasi-Galois point" in Algebraic geometry, which is a generalization of the Galois point. A point $P$ in projective plane is said to be quasi-Galois for a plane curve if the curve admits a non-trivial birational transformation which preserves the fibers of the projection $π_P$ from $P$. We discuss the standard form of the defining equation of curves with quasi-Galois points, the number of quasi-Galois points, the structure of the Galois group for the projection, relations with dual curves, and so on. Our theory also has applications to the study of automorph…
We characterize all $(n-2)$-dimensional linear subspaces of $\mathbb{P}^{n}$ such that the induced linear projection, when restricted to the rational normal curve, gives a Galois morphism. We give an explicit description of these spaces as a disjoint union of locally closed subvarieties in the Grassmannian $\mathbb{G}(n-2,n)$.
Let $\mathcal{C}$ be an irreducible plane curve of $\text{PG}(2,\mathbb{K})$ where $\mathbb{K}$ is an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p\geq 0$. A point $Q\in \mathcal{C}$ is an inner Galois point for $\mathcal{C}$ if the projection $π_Q$ from $Q$ is Galois. Assume that $\mathcal{C}$ has two different inner Galois points $Q_1$ and $Q_2$, both simple. Let $G_1$ and $G_2$ be the respective Galois groups. Under the assumption that $G_i$ fixes $Q_i$, for $i=1,2$, we provide a complete classification of $G=\langle G_1,G_2 \rangle$ and we exhibit a curve for each such $G$. Our proof rel…
Let $C$ be a smooth plane curve. A point $P$ in the projective plane is said to be Galois with respect to $C$ if the function field extension induced from the point projection from $P$ is Galois. We denote by $δ(C)$ (resp. $δ'(C)$) the number of Galois points contained in $C$ (resp. in $\mathbb P^2 \setminus C$). In this article, we determine the numbers $δ(C)$ and $δ'(C)$ in any remaining open cases. Summarizing results obtained by now, we will have a complete classification theorem of smooth plane curves by the number $δ(C)$ or $δ'(C)$. In particular, we give new characterizations of Fermat …
Stratifications and iterative differential equations are analogues in positive characteristic of complex linear differential equations. There are few explicit examples of stratifications. The main goal of this paper is to construct stratifications on projective or affine curves in positive characteristic and to determine the possibilities for their differential Galois groups. For the related "differential Abhyankar conjecture" we present partial answers, supplementing the literature. The tools for the construction of regular singular stratifications and the study of their differential Galois g…
We use the theory of canonical models of Shimura varieties to describe the projective limit of the curves Y(N), all N, and its automorphism group. In particular we prove that the Galois group of Q(CM) over Q is an extension of a certain abelian group by a 2-element group, where Q(CM) stands for the the extension of Q by all the CM-points on all the curves Y(N).
In the projective plane PG(2,q) over a finite field of order q, a Tallini curve is a plane irreducible (algebraic) curve of (minimum) degree q+2 containing all points of PG(2,q). Such curves were investigated by G. Tallini in 1961, and by Homma and Kim in 2013. Our results concern the automorphism groups, the Weierstrass semigroups, the Hasse-Witt invariants, and quotient curves of the Tallini curves.
An elementary proof of a theorem of Montanucci and Zini on the automorphism group of generalized Aritn-Schreier-Mumford curves is presented, with the argument of Korchmaros and Montanucci for Artin-Schreier-Mumford curves being improved. Although the characteristic of a ground field is assumed to be odd in the article of Montanucci and Zini, the proof in the present article is applicable to the case of characteristic two also. As an application of the theorem of Montanucci and Zini, the arrangement of Galois points or Galois lines for the generalized Artin-Schreier-Mumford curve is determined.
We establish that the geometric action of the absolute Galois group on the étale fundamental group of moduli spaces of curves induces a Galois action on its stack inertia subgroups, and that this action is given by cyclotomy conjugacy. This result extends the special case of inertia without étale factorisation previously established by the authors. It is here obtained in the general case by comparing deformations of Galois actions. Since the stack inertia corresponds to the first level of the stack stratification of the space, this results, by analogy with the arithmetic of the Deligne-Mumford…
For each linearly normal elliptic curve $C$ in $\mathbb P^3$, we determine Galois lines and their arrangement. The results are as follows: the curve $C$ has just six $V_4$-lines and in case $j(C)=1$, it has eight $Z_4$-lines in addition. The $V_4$-lines form the edges of a tetrahedron, in case $j(C)=1$, for each vertex of the tetrahedron, there exist just two $Z_4$-lines passing through it. We obtain as a corollary that each plane quartic curve of genus one does not have more than one Galois point.
Recently, the first author classified finite groups obtained as automorphism groups of smooth plane curves of degree $d \ge 4$ into five types. He gave an upper bound of the order of the automorphism group for each types. For one of them, the type (a-ii), that is given by $\max \left\{ 2 d (d - 2), 60 d \right\}$. In this article, we shall construct typical examples of smooth plane curve $C$ by applying the method of Galois points, whose automorphism group has order $60 d$. In fact, we determine the structure of the automorphism group of those curves.
Let $\mathbb{F}$ be the finite field of order $q^2$, $q=p^h$ with $p$ prime. It is commonly atribute to J.P. Serre the fact that any curve $\mathbb{F}$-covered by the Hermitian curve $\mathcal{H}_{q+1}:\, y^{q+1}=x^q+x$ is also $\mathbb{F}$-maximal. Nevertheless, the converse is not true as the Giulietti-Korchmáros example shows provided that $q>8$ and $h\equiv 0\pmod{3}$. In this paper, we show that if an $\mathbb{F}$-maximal curve $\mathcal{X}$ of genus $g\geq 2$ where $q=p$ is such that $|Aut(\mathcal{X})|>84(g-1)$ then $\mathcal{X}$ is Galois-covered by $\mathcal{H}_{p+1}$. Also, we show t…
Let SU_C(2) denote the moduli variety of rank 2 semistable vector bundles with trivial determinant on an algebraic curve C. We prove that if C is trigonal then there exists a projective moduli variety N_C containing SU_C(2) as a subvariety and smooth of dimension 7g-14 away from SU_C(2). N_C parametrises Galois Spin(8)-bundles on the Galois closure of C over P^1. Moreover, if x in J_C[2] is a 2-torsion point let R(x) be the Recillas tetragonal curve whose Jacobian is isomorphic to Prym(C,x). Then there is an injection of SU_R(x)(2) into N_C giving a `nonabelian Schottky configuration' in N_C s…
In this note we show that if an abelian variety possesses a Galois embedding into some projective space, then it must be isogenous to the self product of an elliptic curve. We prove moreover that the self product of an elliptic curve always has infinitely many Galois embeddings.
We study cohomologies of a curve with an action of a finite $p$-group over a field of characteristic $p$. Assuming the existence of a certain 'magical element' in the function field of the curve, we compute the equivariant structure of the module of holomorphic differentials and the de Rham cohomology, up to certain local terms. We show that a generic $p$-group cover has a 'magical element'. As an application we compute the de Rham cohomology of a curve with an action of a finite cyclic group of prime order.
Given an embedding of a smooth projective curve $X$ of genus $g\geq1$ into $\mathbb{P}^N$, we study the locus of linear subspaces of $\mathbb{P}^N$ of codimension 2 such that projection from said subspace, composed with the embedding, gives a Galois morphism $X\to\mathbb{P}^1$. For genus $g\geq2$ we prove that this locus is a smooth projective variety with components isomorphic to projective spaces. If $g=1$ and the embedding is given by a complete linear system, we prove that this locus is also a smooth projective variety whose positive-dimensional components are isomorphic to projective bund…
