Fuchsian groups with a modular embedding have the richest arithmetic properties among non-arithmetic Fuchsian groups. But they are very rare, all known examples being related either to triangle groups or to Teichmueller curves.
In Part I of this paper we study the arithmetic properties of the modular embedding and develop from scratch a theory of twisted modular forms for Fuchsian groups with a modular embedding, proving dimension formulas, coefficient growth estimates and differential equations.
In Part II we provide a modular proof for an Apery-like integrality statement for solutions of Picard-Fuchs equations. We illustrate the theory on a worked example, giving explicit Fourier expansions of twisted modular forms and the equation of a Teichmueller curve in a Hilbert modular surface.
In Part III we show that genus two Teichmueller curves are cut out in Hilbert modular surfaces by a product of theta derivatives. We rederive most of the known properties of those Teichmueller curves from this viewpoint, without using the theory of flat surfaces. As a consequence we give the modular embeddings for all genus two Teichmueller curves and prove that the Fourier developments of their twisted modular forms are algebraic up to one transcendental scaling constant. Moreover, we prove that Bainbridge's compactification of Hilbert modular surfaces is toroidal. The strategy to compactify can be expressed using continued fractions and resembles Hirzebruch's in form, but every detail is different.
We investigate modular embeddings for semi-arithmetic Fuchsian groups. First we prove some purely algebro-geometric or even topological criteria for a regular map from a smooth complex curve to a quaternionic Shimura variety to be covered by a modular embedding. Then we set up an adelic formalism for modular embeddings and apply our criteria to study the effect of abstract field automorphisms of $\mathbb{C}$ on modular embeddings. Finally we derive that the absolute Galois group of $\mathbb{Q}$ operates on the dessins d'enfants defined by principal congruence subgroups of (arithmetic or non-ar…
We prove a rigidity theorem for semi-arithmetic Fuchsian groups: If $Γ_1$, $Γ_2$ are two semi-arithmetic lattices in $\mathrm{PSL}(2,\mathbb{R})$ virtually admitting modular embeddings and $f\colonΓ_1\toΓ_2$ is a group isomorphism that respects the notion of congruence subgroups, then $f$ is induced by an inner automorphism of $\mathrm{PGL}(2,\mathbb{R})$.
Let $p\ge 5$ be a prime. We show that the space of weight one Eisenstein series defines an embedding into $\PP^{(p-3)/2}$ of the modular curve $X_1(p)$ for the congruence group $Γ_1(p)$ that is scheme-theoretically cut out by explicit quadratic equations.
Let L be the even unimodular lattice of signature (2,10), In the paper [FS] we considered the subgroup O(L)^+ of index two in the orthogonal group. It acts biholomorphically on a ten dimensional tube domain H_{10}. We found a 715 dimensional space of modular forms with respect to the principal congruence subgroup of level two O^+(L)[2]. It defines an everywhere regular birational embedding of the related modular variety into the 714 dimensional projective space. In this paper, we prove that this space of orthogonal modular forms is related to a space of theta series. The main tool is a modular…
In this paper we describe a method for computing a basis for the space of weight $2$ cusp forms invariant under a non-split Cartan subgroup of prime level $p$. As an application we compute, for certain small values of $p$, explicit equations over $\bf Q$ for the canonical embeddings of the associated modular curves.
In this paper, we obtain an explicit arithmetic intersection formula on a Hilbert modular surface between the diagonal embedding of the modular curve and a CM cycle associated to a non-biquadratic CM quartic field. This confirms a special case of the author's conjecture with J. Bruinier in \cite{BY}, and is a generalization of the beautiful factorization formula of Gross and Zagier on singular moduli. As an application, we proved the first non-trivial non-abelian Chowla-Selberg formula, a special case of Colmez conjecture.
We study pullbacks of modular forms of weight 1 from the modular curve X(4) to the modular curve X(4p), where p is an odd prime. We find the extent to which such modular forms separate points on X(4p). Our main result is that these modular forms give rise to a morphism F from the quotient of X(4p) by a certain involution i to projective space, such that F is a projective embedding of X(4p)/i away from the cusps. We also report on computer calculations regarding products of such modular forms, going up to weight 4 for p <= 13, and up to weight 3 for p <= 23, and make a conjecture about these pr…
We give a new proof of the slope classicality theorem in classical and higher Coleman theory for modular curves at arbitrary level using the completed cohomology classes attached to overconvergent modular forms. The latter give an embedding of the quotient of overconvergent modular forms by classical modular forms, which is the obstruction space for classicality in either cohomological degree, into a unitary representation of $\mathrm{GL}_2(\mathbb{Q}_p)$. The $U_p$ operator becomes a double-coset, and unitarity yields the slope vanishing.
The relations satisfied by period polynomials associated to modular forms yield a way to count dimensions of spaces of cusp forms. After showing how these relations arise from those on the mapping class group $PSL(2, \mathbb{Z})$ of the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_{0,4}$ of genus 0 curves with 4 marked points, the author goes on to define period polynomials associated to Picard modular forms. Relations on these Picard period polynomials are then determined, and via an embedding of a monodromy representation of the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_{0,5}$ of genus 0 curves with 5 marked points in $PU(2,1…
Let χ be the primitive Dirichlet character of conductor 49 defined by χ(3)=ζ, for ζ a primitive 42nd root of unity. We explicitly compute the slopes of the U_7 operator acting on the space of overconvergent modular forms on X_1(49) with weight k and character either χ^{7k-6} or χ^{8-7k}, depending on the embedding of Q(ζ) into C_7. By applying results of Coleman, and of Cohen-Oesterlé, we are then able to conclude the slopes of U_7 acting on all classical Hecke newforms of the same weight and character.
We compute the p-adic Abel-Jacobi map of the product of a Hilbert modular surface and a modular curve at a null-homologous (modified) embedding of the modular curve in this product, evaluated on differentials associated to a Hilbert cuspidal form f of weight (2,2) and a cuspidal form of weight 2. We generalize this computation to suitable null-homological cycles in the fibre products of the universal families on the surface and the curve, evaluated at differentials associated to f and g of higher weights. We express the values of the p-adic Abel-Jacobi map at these weights in terms of a p-adic…
The Minkowski question mark function is a rich object which can be explored from the perspective of dynamical systems, complex dynamics, metric number theory, multifractal analysis, transfer operators, integral transforms, and as a function itself via analysis of continued fractions and convergents. Our permanent target, however, was to get arithmetic interpretation of the moments of ?(x) (which are relatives of periods of Maass wave forms) and to relate the function ?(x) to certain modular objects. In this paper we establish this link, embedding ?(x) not into the modular-world itself, but int…

Borcherds lift for an even lattice of signature (p,q) is a lifting from weakly holomorphic modular forms of weight (p-q)/2 for the Weil representation. We introduce a new product operation on the space of such modular forms and develop a basic theory. The product makes this space a finitely generated filtered associative algebra, without unit element and noncommutative in general. This is functorial with respect to embedding of lattices by the quasi-pullback. Moreover, the rational space of modular forms with rational principal part is closed under this product. In some examples with p=2, the …
In this paper we study rank two symmetric hyperbolic Kac-Moody algebras H(a) and their automorphic correction in terms of Hilbert modular forms. We associate a family of H(a)'s to the quadratic field Q(p) for each odd prime p and show that there exists a chain of embeddings in each family. When p = 5, 13, 17, we show that the first H(a) in each family, i.e. H(3), H(11), H(66), is contained in a generalized Kac-Moody superalgebra whose denominator function is a Hilbert modular form given by a Borcherds product. Hence, our results provide automorphic correction for those H(a)'s. We also compute …
Bruinier and Yang conjectured a formula for an intersection number on the arithmetic Hilbert modular surface, CM(K).T_m, where CM(K) is the zero-cycle of points corresponding to abelian surfaces with CM by a primitive quartic CM field K, and T_m is the Hirzebruch-Zagier divisors parameterizing products of elliptic curves with an m-isogeny between them. In this paper, we examine fields not covered by Yang's proof of the conjecture. We give numerical evidence to support the conjecture and point to some interesting anomalies. We compare the conjecture to both the denominators of Igusa class polyn…
Jacobi-Forms can be decomposed as a linear combination of Thetafunctions with modular forms as coefficients. It is shown that the space of these coefficient modular forms of Fourier-Jacobi-Forms, which come from Siegel cusp forms, has full rank in every point of the Satake boundary, if the index is 1, the weight is sufficiently large and the Satake boundary point has trivial stabilizer in $Γ_{n-1}$. This yields a local automorphic embedding of the Siegel modular variety. Klingen-Poincare series are the main tool. Despite of this richness it is proved that there are more Jacobi index 1 cusp for…
