Let SU_C(2) denote the moduli variety of rank 2 semistable vector bundles with trivial determinant on an algebraic curve C. We prove that if C is trigonal then there exists a projective moduli variety N_C containing SU_C(2) as a subvariety and smooth of dimension 7g-14 away from SU_C(2). N_C parametrises Galois Spin(8)-bundles on the Galois closure of C over P^1. Moreover, if x in J_C[2] is a 2-torsion point let R(x) be the Recillas tetragonal curve whose Jacobian is isomorphic to Prym(C,x). Then there is an injection of SU_R(x)(2) into N_C giving a `nonabelian Schottky configuration' in N_C singular along the classical Schottky configuration in SU_C(2).
We classify and study trigonal curves in Hirzebruch surfaces admitting dihedral Galois coverings. As a consequence, we obtain certain restrictions on the fundamental group of a plane curve~$D$ with a singular point of multiplicity $(°D-3)$.
Let $C$ be a trigonal curve of genus $g\ge 5$ and let $T$ be the unique trigonal line bundle inducing a map $π: C \stackrel{3:1}{\longrightarrow} \mathbb{P}^1$. This note provides a short and easy proof of the normal generation for the residual line bundle $K_C\otimes T^{-1}$ for curves of genus $g\ge 7$. Moreover, we compute the minimal free resolution of the embedded curve $C\subset \mathbb{P}(H^0(C,K_C\otimes T^{-n})^*)$ for the residual line bundle $K_C\otimes T^{-n}$ for $n\ge 1$ and $g \ge 3n+4$.
Using Galois Theory, we construct explicitly absolutely simple (principally polarized) Prym varieties that are not isomorphic to jacobians of curves even if we ignore the polarizations. Our approach is based on the previous papers math/0610138 [math.AG] and math/0605028 [math.AG] .
Trigonal curves provide an example of Brill-Noether special curves. Theorem 1.3 of [9] characterizes the Brill-Noether theory of general trigonal curves and the refined stratification by Brill-Noether splitting loci, which parametrize line bundles whose push forward to $\mathbb{P}^1$ has a specified splitting type. This note describes the refined stratification for all trigonal curves. Given the Maroni invariant of a trigonal curve, we determine the dimensions of all Brill-Noether splitting loci and describe their irreducible components. When the dimension is positive, these loci are connected…
Stratifications and iterative differential equations are analogues in positive characteristic of complex linear differential equations. There are few explicit examples of stratifications. The main goal of this paper is to construct stratifications on projective or affine curves in positive characteristic and to determine the possibilities for their differential Galois groups. For the related "differential Abhyankar conjecture" we present partial answers, supplementing the literature. The tools for the construction of regular singular stratifications and the study of their differential Galois g…
Recall that a smooth complex projective curve has a very ample canonical bundle when it is non-hyperelliptic, and according to a theorem of M. Noether the resulting embedding is projectively normal. A theorem of Petri further asserts that the homogeneous ideal is generated by quadrics if the curve is neither trigonal nor a smooth plane quintic. In this note, we prove an analogue of Noether's theorem for the symmetric square of the curve - namely, the canonical bundle of the symmetric square determines a projectively normal embedding exactly when the curve itself is neither hyperelliptic, trigo…
We explore relations between Higgs bundles that result from isogenies between low-dimensional Lie groups, with special attention to the spectral data for the Higgs bundles. We focus on isogenies onto $SO(4,C)$ and $SO(6,C)$ and their split real forms. Using fiber products of spectral curves, we obtain directly the desingularizations of the (necessarily singular) spectral curves associated to orthogonal Higgs bundles. In the case of $SO(6,C)$ our construction can be interpreted as a new description of Recillas' trigonal construction.
A cyclic trigonal curve of genus three is a $\mathbb{Z}_3$ Galois cover of $\mathbb{P}^1$, therefore can be written as a smooth plane curve with equation $y^3 = f(x) =(x - b_1) (x - b_2) (x - b_3) (x - b_4)$. Following Weierstrass for the hyperelliptic case, we define an ``$\mathrm{al}$'' function for this curve and $\mathrm{al}^{(c)}_r$, $c=0,1,2$, for each one of three particular covers of the Jacobian of the curve, and $r=1,2,3,4$ for a finite branchpoint $(b_r,0)$. This generalization of the Jacobi $\mathrm{sn}$, $\mathrm{cn}$, $\mathrm{dn}$ functions satisfies the relation: $$ \sum_{r=1}^…
Let $p: Y \ra X$ be a Galois cover of smooth projective curves over $\CC$ with Galois group $Γ$. This paper is devoted to the study of principal orthogonal and symplectic bundles $E$ on $Y$ to which the action of $Γ$ on $Y$ lifts. We notably describe them intrinsically in terms of objects defined on $X$ and call these objects parahoric bundles. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for the non-emptiness of the moduli of stable (and semi-stable) parahoric special orthogonal, symplectic and spin bundles on the projective line $\PP^1$.
We study the moduli of trigonal curves. We establish the exact upper bound of ${36(g+1)}/(5g+1)$ for the slope of trigonal fibrations. Here, the slope of any fibration $X\to B$ of stable curves with smooth general member is the ratio $δ_B/λ_B$ of the restrictions of the boundary class $δ$ and the Hodge class $λ$ on the moduli space $\bar{\mathfrak{M}}_g$ to the base $B$. We associate to a trigonal family $X$ a canonical rank two vector bundle $V$, and show that for Bogomolov-semistable $V$ the slope satisfies the stronger inequality ${δ_B}/{λ_B}\leq 7+{6}/{g}$. We further describe the rational…
We study triple covers of K3 surfaces, following Miranda's theory of triple covers. We relate the geometry of the covering surfaces with the properties of both the branch locus and the Tschirnhausen vector bundle. In particular, we classify Galois triple covers computing numerical invariants of the covering surface and of its minimal model. We provide examples of non Galois triple covers, both in the case in which the Tschirnhausen bundle splits into the sum of two line bundles and in the case in which it is an indecomposable rank 2 vector bundle. We provide a criterion to construct rank 2 vec…
In a remark to Green's conjecture, Paranjape and Ramanan analyzed the vector bundle $E$ which is the pullback by the canonical map of the universal quotient bundle $T_{\Pp^{g-1}}(-1)$ on $\Pp^{g-1}$ and stated a more general conjecture and proved it for the curves with Clifford Index $1$ (trigonal and plane quintic). In this paper, we state the conjecture for general linear systems and obtain the results for the case of hyperelliptic curves.
In this article, we show that for any non-isotrivial family of abelian varieties over a rational base with big monodromy, those members that have adelic Galois representation with image as large as possible form a density-$1$ subset. Our results can be applied to a number of interesting families of abelian varieties, such as rational families dominating the moduli of Jacobians of hyperelliptic curves, trigonal curves, or plane curves. As a consequence, we prove that for any dimension $g \geq 3$, there are infinitely many abelian varieties over $\mathbb Q$ with adelic Galois representation havi…
In a recent paper Ben-Zvi and Nadler proved that the induction map from $B$-bundles of degree 0 to semistable $G$-bundles of degree 0 over an elliptic curve is a small map with Galois group isomorphic to the Weyl group of $G$. We generalize their result to all connected components of $\Bun_G$ for an arbitrary reductive group $G$. We prove that for every degree (i.e. topological type) there exists a unique parabolic subgroup such that any semistable $G$\nobreakdash-bundle of this degree has a reduction to it and moreover the induction map is small with Galois group the relative Weyl group of th…
Given a connection on a meromorphic vector bundle over a compact Riemann surface with reductive Galois group, we associate to it a projective variety. Connections such that their associated projective variety are curves can be classified, up to projective equivalence, using ruled surfaces. In particular, such a meromorphic connection is the pullbacks of a Standard connection. This extend a similar result by Klein for second-order ordinary linear differential equations to a broader class of equations.
Given an embedding of a smooth projective curve $X$ of genus $g\geq1$ into $\mathbb{P}^N$, we study the locus of linear subspaces of $\mathbb{P}^N$ of codimension 2 such that projection from said subspace, composed with the embedding, gives a Galois morphism $X\to\mathbb{P}^1$. For genus $g\geq2$ we prove that this locus is a smooth projective variety with components isomorphic to projective spaces. If $g=1$ and the embedding is given by a complete linear system, we prove that this locus is also a smooth projective variety whose positive-dimensional components are isomorphic to projective bund…
Let $f : X \rightarrow Y$ be a genuinely ramified map between irreducible smooth projective curves defined over an algebraically closed field. Let $P$ be a branch data on $Y$ such that $P(y)$ and $B_f(y)$ where $B_f$ is branch data for $f$ are linearly disjoint for every $y \in, Y$. Further assume that either $P$ is tame or $f$ is Galois. Then the pullback, by $f$, of any stable parabolic bundle on $Y$ with respect to $P$ is actually a stable parabolic bundle on $X$ with respect to $f^*P$.
Let $X$ be a smooth projective variety defined over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic $p$ whose tangent bundle is nef. We prove that $X$ admits a smooth morphism $X \to M$ such that the fibers are Fano varieties with nef tangent bundle and $T_M$ is numerically flat. We also prove that extremal contractions exist as smooth morphisms. As an application, we prove that, if the Frobenius morphism can be lifted modulo $p^2$, then $X$ admits, up to a finite étale Galois cover, a smooth morphism onto an ordinary abelian variety whose fibers are products of projective spaces.
Let $φ\colon X\rightarrow Y$ be a degree two Galois cover of smooth curves over a local field $F$ of odd characteristic. Assuming that $Y$ has good reduction, we describe a semi-stability criterion for the curve $X$, using the data of the branch locus of the covering $φ$. In the case that $X$ has semi-stable reduction, we describe the dual graph of the minimal regular model of $X$ over $F.$ We do this by adopting the notion of cluster picture defined for hyperelliptic curves for the case where $Y$ is not necessarily a rational curve. Using these results, we describe the variation of the p-adic…
The cherry on top of this stacky paper is the following: for any g>1 we give a finite group G such that the moduli space of connected admissible G-covers of genus g is a smooth, fine moduli space, which is a Galois cover of the moduli space of stable curves. The proof relies on methods introduced by Looijenga and Pikaart-De Jong, and on the theory of twisted G-covers, a theory announced without proofs in math.AG/9811059, section 3, and developed in the first few sections of this paper. This includes a moduli description of the normalization of the Harris-Mumford space of admissible covers, and…
We study two different actions on the moduli spaces of logarithmic connections over smooth complex projective curves. Firstly, we establish a dictionary between logarithmic orbifold connections and parabolic logarithmic connections over the quotient curve. Secondly, we prove that fixed points on the moduli space of connections under the action of finite order line bundles are exactly the push-forward of logarithmic connections on a certain unramified Galois cover of the base curve. In the coprime case, this action of finite order line bundles on the moduli space is cohomologically trivial.
Let $π: Z \ra X$ be a Galois covering of smooth projective curves with Galois group the Weyl group of a simple and simply-connected Lie group $G$. For any dominant weight $λ$ consider the curve $Y = Z/\Stab(λ)$. The Kanev correspondence defines an abelian subvariety $P_λ$ of the Jacobian of $Y$. We compute the type of the polarization of the restriction of the canonical principal polarization of $\Jac(Y)$ to $P_λ$ in some cases. In particular, in the case of the group $E_8$ we obtain families of Prym-Tyurin varieties. The main idea is the use of an abelianization map of the Donagi-Prym variety…
Let $E$ is be vector bundle with meromorphic connection on $\proj^1/k$ for some field $k \subset \cplx$, and let $\mathbf{E}$ be the sheaf of horizontal sections on the analytic points of $X$. The irregular Riemann-Hilbert correspondence states that there is a canonical isomorphism between the De Rham cohomology of $L$ and the `moderate growth' cohomology of $\mathbf{L}$. Recent work of Beilinson, Bloch, and Esnault has shown that the determinant of this map factors into a product of local `$ε$-factors' which closely resemble the classical $ε$-factors of Galois representations. In this paper, …
Teichmueller curves are geodesic discs in Teichmueller space that project to an algebraic curve in the moduli space $M_g$. We show that for all $g \geq 2$ Teichmueller curves map to the locus of real multiplication in the moduli space of abelian varieties. Remark that McMullen has shown that precisely for $g=2$ the locus of real multiplication is stable under the $\SL_2(\RR)$-action on the tautological bundle $Ω\M_g$. We also show that Teichmueller curves are defined over number fields and we provide a completely algebraic description of Teichmueller curves in terms of Higgs bundles. As a cons…
For any two degrees coprime to the rank, we construct a family of ring isomorphisms parameterized by GSp(2g) between the cohomology of the moduli spaces of stable Higgs bundles which preserve the perverse filtrations. As consequences, we prove two structural results concerning the cohomology of Higgs moduli which are predicted by the P=W conjecture in non-abelian Hodge theory: (1) Galois conjugation for character varieties preserves the perverse filtrations for the corresponding Higgs moduli spaces. (2) The restriction of the Hodge-Tate decomposition for a character variety to each piece of th…
We examine a moduli problem for real and quaternionic vector bundles on a smooth complex projective curve with a fixed real structure, and we give a gauge-theoretic construction of moduli spaces for semi-stable such bundles with fixed topological type. These spaces embed onto connected subsets of real points inside a complex projective variety. We relate our point of view to previous work by Biswas, Huisman and Hurtubise (arxiv:0901.3071), and we use this to study the Galois action induced on moduli varieties of stable holomorphic bundles on a complex curve by a given real structure on the cur…
The logarithmic connections studied in the paper are direct images of regular connections on line bundles over genus-2 double covers of the elliptic curve. We give an explicit parametrization of all such connections, determine their monodromy, differential Galois group and the underlying rank-2 vector bundle. The latter is described in terms of elementary transforms. The question of its (semi)-stability is addressed.
We prove that, for adic étale motives over $\mathbb{C}_p$, the vector bundles on the Fargues-Fontaine curve arising from their Hyodo-Kato cohomology coincide with their de Rham-Fargues-Fontaine cohomologies, where the latter provides an overconvergent refinement of crystalline vector bundles, albeit constructed on the generic fiber. This equivalence is established in the setting of symmetric monoidal $\infty$-categories and respects the full motivic structure. Furthermore, we enrich both realizations with Galois actions, yielding $G_{\breve{\mathbb{Q}}_{p}}$-equivariant solid quasi-coherent sh…
Let $E$ be an elliptic curve. When the symmetric group $Σ_{g+1}$ of order $(g+1)!$ acts on $E^{g+1}$ in the natural way, the subgroup $E_0^{g+1}$, consisting of those $(g+1)$-tuples whose coordinates sum to zero, is stable under the action of $Σ_{g+1}$. It is isomorphic to $E^g$. This paper concerns the structure of the quotient variety $E^g/Σ$ when $Σ$ is a subgroup of $Σ_{g+1}$ generated by simple transpositions. In an earlier paper we observed that $E^g/Σ$ is a bundle over a suitable power, $E^N$, with fibers that are products of projective spaces. This paper shows that $E^g/Σ$ has an étale…
