The Morse-Novikov number MN(L) of an oriented link L in the 3-sphere is the minimum number of critical points of a Morse map from the complement of L in the 3-sphere to the circle representing the class of a Seifert surface for L (e.g., the Morse-Novikov number of L is zero if and only if L is fibered). We develop various constructions of Morse maps (Milnor maps, Stallings twists, splicing along a link which is a closed braid with respect to a Morse map, Murasugi sums, cutting a Morse map along an arc on a page) and use them to bound Morse-Novikov numbers from above in terms of other knot and link invariants (free genus, crossing number, braid index, wrapping genus and layered wrapping genus).
Let M be a closed n-dimensional manifold, n > 2, whose first real cohomology group H 1 (M ; R) is non-zero. We present a general method for constructing a Morse 1-form $α$ on M , closed but non-exact, and a pseudo-gradient X such that the differential $\partial$ X of the Novikov complex of the pair ($α$, X) has at least one incidence coefficient which is an infinite series. This is an application of our previous study of the homoclinic bifurcation of pseudo-gradients of multivalued Morse functions.
The idea of Lichnerowicz or Morse-Novikov cohomology groups of a manifold has been utilized by many researchers to study important properties and invariants of a manifold. Morse-Novikov cohomology is defined using the differential $d_ω=d+ω\wedge$, where $ω$ is a closed $1$-form. We study Morse-Novikov cohomology relative to a foliation on a manifold and its homotopy invariance and then extend it to more general type of forms on a Riemannian foliation. We study the Laplacian and Hodge decompositions for the corresponding differential operators on reduced leafwise Morse-Novikov complexes. In the…
Developed from geometric arguments for bounding the Morse-Novikov number of a link in terms of its tunnel number, we obtain upper and lower bounds on the handle number of a Heegaard splitting of a sutured manifold $(M,γ)$ in terms of the handle number of its decompositions along a surface representing a given 2nd homology class. Fixing the sutured structure $(M,γ)$, this leads us to develop the handle number function $h \colon H_2(M,\partial M;\mathbb{R}) \to \mathbb{N}$ which is bounded, constant on rays from the origin, and locally maximal. Furthermore, for an integral class $ξ$, $h(ξ)=0$ if…
We consider a compact manifold of dimension greater than 2 and a differential form of degree one which is closed but non-exact. This form, viewed as a multi-valued function has a gradient vector field with respect to any Riemannian metric. After S. Novikov's work and a complement by J.-C. Sikorav, under some genericity assumptions these data yield a complex, called today the Morse-Novikov complex. Due to the non-exactness of the form, its gradient has a non-trivial dynamics in contrary to gradients of functions. In particular, it is possible that the gradient has a homoclinic orbit. The one-fo…
Let N be a closed oriented k-dimensional submanifold of the (k+2)-dimensional sphere; denote its complement by C(N). Denote by x the 1-dimensional cohomology class in C(N), dual to N. The Morse-Novikov number of C(N) is by definition the minimal possible number of critical points of a regular Morse map f from C(N) to a circle, such that f belongs to x. In the first part of this paper we study the case when N is the twist frame spun knot associated to an m-knot K. We obtain a formula which relates the Morse-Novikov numbers of N and K and generalizes the classical results of D. Roseman and E.C. …
Given a $1$-cohomology class $u$ on a closed manifold $M$, we define a Novikov fundamental group associated to $u$, generalizing the usual fundamental group in the same spirit as Novikov homology generalizes Morse homology to the case of non exact $1$-forms. As an application, lower bounds for the minimal number of index $1$ and $2$ critical points of Morse closed $1$-forms are obtained, that are different in nature from those derived from the Novikov homology.
We give an alternative proof of that a critical knot of a Morse-Bott function $f: S^3 \rightarrow \mathbb{R}$ is a graph knot where the critical set of $f$ is a link in $S^3$. Our proof inducts on the number of index-1 critical knots of $f$.
Let $ω$ be a Morse form on a manifold $M$. Let $p:\hat M\to M$ be a regular covering with structure group $G$, such that $p^*([ω])=0$. Let $ξ:G\to\mathbf{R}$ be the corresponding period homomorphism. Denote by ${\hat Λ}_ξ$ the Novikov completion of the group ring $\mathbf{Z} G$. Choose a transverse $ω$-gradient $v$. Counting the flow lines of $v$ one defines the Novikov complex $\mathcal{N}_*$ freely generated over ${\hat Λ}_ξ$ by the set of zeroes of $ω$. In this paper we introduce a refinement of this construction. We define a subring $\hatΛ_Γ$ of ${\hat Λ}_ξ$ and show that the Novikov compl…
We obtain a simple and complete characterisation of which matchings on the Tait graph of a knot diagram induce a discrete Morse function (dMf) on $S^2$, extending a construction due to Cohen. We show these dMfs are in bijection with certain rooted spanning forests in the Tait graph. We use this to count the number of such dMfs with a closed formula involving the graph Laplacian. We then simultaneously generalise Kauffman's Clock Theorem and Kenyon-Propp-Wilson's correspondence in two different directions; we first prove that the image of the correspondence induces a bijection on perfect dMfs, …
We prove a version of the Arnol'd conjecture for Lagrangian submanifolds of conformal symplectic manifolds: a Lagrangian $L$ which has non-zero Morse-Novikov homology for the restriction of the Lee form $β$ cannot be disjoined from itself by a $C^0$-small Hamiltonian isotopy. Furthermore for generic such isotopies the number of intersection points equals at least the sum of the free Betti numbers of the Morse-Novikov homology of $β$. We also give a short exposition of conformal symplectic geometry, aimed at readers who are familiar with (standard) symplectic or contact geometry.
We introduce the notion of ascent sliceness of virtual knots. A representative of a virtual knot is an embedding $ S^1 \hookrightarrow Σ_{g} \times I $, for $ Σ_g $ a closed connected oriented surface of genus $ g $; the virtual knot represented is slice if there exists a pair consisting of a disc $ D $ and an oriented $ 3 $-manifold $ M $, such that $ D \hookrightarrow M \times I $, $ \partial M = Σ_{g} $, and $ \partial D = S^1 $ (the image of the embedding). This definition of sliceness exemplifies that a cobordism of virtual links is a pair consisting of a surface and a $ 3 $-manifold; in …
Given a knot $K$ parametrized by $r: [0,2π] \to \mathbb{R}^3$, we can define the electric potential on its complement by $Φ(x) = \int_0^{2π} \frac{|r'(t)|}{|x - r(t)|}dt$. Physicists and knot theorists want to understand the critical points of the potential and their behavior. The tunneling number $t(K)$ of a knot is the smallest number of arcs one needs to add to a knot so the complement is a handlebody. We show the number of critical points of the potential is at least $2t(K) + 2$. The result is proven using Morse theory and stable manifold theory.

Knots naturally appear in continuous dynamical systems as flow periodic trajectories. However, discrete dynamical systems are also closely connected with the theory of knots and links. For example, for Pixton diffeomorphisms, the equivalence class of the Hopf knot, which is the orbit space of the unstable saddle separatrix in the manifold $\mathbb{S}^2\times \mathbb{S}^1$, is a complete invariant of the topological conjugacy of the system. In this paper we distinguish a class of three-dimensional Morse-Smale diffeomorphisms for which the complete invariant of topological conjugacy is the equiv…
