We obtain rigidity and gluing results for the Morse complex of a real-valued Morse function as well as for the Novikov complex of a circle-valued Morse function. A rigidity result is also proved for the Floer complex of a hamiltonian defined on a closed symplectic manifold $(M,ω)$ with $c_{1}|_{π_{2}(M)}=[ω]|_{π_{2}(M)}=0$. The rigidity results for these complexes show that the complex of a fixed generic function/hamiltonian is a retract of the Morse (respectively Novikov or Floer) complex of any other sufficiently $C^{0}$ close generic function/hamiltonian. The gluing result is a type of Mayer-Vietoris formula for the Morse complex. It is used to express algebraically the Novikov complex up to isomorphism in terms of the Morse complex of a fundamental domain. Morse cobordisms are used to compare various Morse-type complexes without the need of bifurcation theory.
Let $K\subset S^4$ be a 2-knot, that is, a smoothly embedded 2-sphere in $S^4$. The Morse-Novikov number $\mathcal M\mathcal N(K)$ is the minimal possible number of critical points of a Morse map $S^4\setminus K\to S^1$ belonging to the canonical class in $H^1(S^4\setminus K)$. We prove that for a classical knot $K\subset S^3$ the Morse-Novikov number of the spun knot $S(K)$ is $\leq 2\mathcal M\mathcal N(K)$. This enables us to compute $\mathcal M\mathcal N(S(K))$ for every classical knot $K$ with tunnel number 1.
In this note we recall the relations between the barcodes in level and sub-level persistence and make precise their relation with the Morse-Novikov complex of a Morse real- or angle-valued map. The results in this papers are implicit in my previous work(w.collaborators), but apparently not well known even to experts.
We use noncommutative localization to construct a chain complex which counts the critical points of a circle-valued Morse function on a manifold, generalizing the Novikov complex. As a consequence we obtain new topological lower bounds on the minimum number of critical points of a circle-valued Morse function within a homotopy class, generalizing the Novikov inequalities.
Let N be a closed oriented k-dimensional submanifold of the (k+2)-dimensional sphere; denote its complement by C(N). Denote by x the 1-dimensional cohomology class in C(N), dual to N. The Morse-Novikov number of C(N) is by definition the minimal possible number of critical points of a regular Morse map f from C(N) to a circle, such that f belongs to x. In the first part of this paper we study the case when N is the twist frame spun knot associated to an m-knot K. We obtain a formula which relates the Morse-Novikov numbers of N and K and generalizes the classical results of D. Roseman and E.C. …
The Novikov complex of a circle-valued Morse function is constructed algebraically from the Morse-Smale complex of the restriction to a fundamental domain of the real-valued Morse function on the pullback infinite cyclic cover.
This paper is a continuation of Alternative to Morse-Novikov Theory for a closed 1-form(I), and establishes: a) a refinement of Poincaré duality to an equality between the configurations $^{BM} δ^ω$ and $δ^ω$ resp. $^{BM} γ^ω$ and $γ^ω$ in complementary dimensions, b) the stability property for the configurations $δ^ω_r,$ a) a result needed for the proof of Theorems 1.2 and 1.3 stated the paper mentioned above.
The weight $θ$-sheaf $\underline{\mathbb{R}}_{X,θ}$ helps us to reinterpret Morse-Novikov cohomologies via sheaf theory. We give several theorems of Künneth and Leray-Hirsch types. As applications, we prove that the $θ$-Lefschetz number is independent of $θ$ and calculate the Morse-Novikov cohomologies of projective bundles. Based on these results, we give two blow-up formulae on (\emph{not necessarily compact}) complex manifolds, where the self-intersection formulae play a key role in establishing the explicit expressions for them.
We discuss the Morse-Novikov cohomology of a compact manifold, associated to a closed one--form whose free abelian group generated by its periods $\langle \int_γη\mid [γ] \in π_1(M)\rangle$ is of rank 1, the focus being on locally conformally symplectic manifolds. In particular, we provide an explicit computation for the Inoue surface $\mathcal{S}^0$.
This paper extends the Alternative to Morse-Novikov theory we have proposed in Burghelea (New topological invariants for real- and angle valued maps, World Scientific, Hackensack, 2018) from real- and angle-valued map to closed 1-forms. For a topological closed 1-form on a compact ANR (= absolute neighborhood retract), a concept generalizing closed differential 1-form on a compact manifold, under the mild hypothesis of tameness, a field and a non-negative integer we propose two configurations of points, the first on the real line the second on the positive real line, which recover Novikov-Bett…
We review the properties of the Morse-Novikov cohomology and compute it for all known compact complex surfaces with locally conformally Kähler metrics. We present explicit computations for the Inoue surfaces $\mathcal{S}^0$, $\mathcal{S}^+$, $\mathcal{S}^-$ and classify the locally conformally Kähler (and the tamed locally conformally symplectic) forms on $\mathcal{S}^0$. We prove the nonexistence of LCK metrics with potential and more generally, of $d_θ$-exact LCK metrics on Inoue surfaces and Oeljeklaus-Toma manifolds.
This paper but section 6 is essentially my lecture at The Eighth Congress of Romanian Mathematicians, June 26 - July 1, 2015, Iasi, Romania. The paper summarizes the definitions and the properties of the invariants associated to a real or an angle valued map in the framework of what we call an Alternative to Morse-Novikov theory. These invariants are configurations of points in the complex plane, configurations of vector spaces or modules indexed by complex numbers and collections of Jordan cells. The first are refinements of Betti numbers, the second of homology and the third of monodromy. Al…
Two of the most useful tools in topological combinatorics are the nerve lemma and discrete Morse theory. In this note we introduce a theorem that interpolates between them and allows decompositions of complexes into non-contractible pieces as long as discrete Morse theory ensures that they behave well enough. The proof is based on diagrams of spaces, but that theory is not needed for the formulation or applications of the theorem.
In this paper we construct a Universal chain complex, counting zeros of closed 1-forms on a manifold. The Universal complex is a refinement of the well known Novikov complex; it relates the homotopy type of the manifold, after a suitable noncommutative localization, with the numbers of zeros of different indices which may have closed 1-forms within a given cohomology class. The Main Theorem of the paper generalizes the result of a joint paper with A. Ranicki, which treats the special case of closed 1-forms having integral cohomology classes. The present paper also describes a number of new ine…
Let $ω$ be a Morse form on a manifold $M$. Let $p:\hat M\to M$ be a regular covering with structure group $G$, such that $p^*([ω])=0$. Let $ξ:G\to\mathbf{R}$ be the corresponding period homomorphism. Denote by ${\hat Λ}_ξ$ the Novikov completion of the group ring $\mathbf{Z} G$. Choose a transverse $ω$-gradient $v$. Counting the flow lines of $v$ one defines the Novikov complex $\mathcal{N}_*$ freely generated over ${\hat Λ}_ξ$ by the set of zeroes of $ω$. In this paper we introduce a refinement of this construction. We define a subring $\hatΛ_Γ$ of ${\hat Λ}_ξ$ and show that the Novikov compl…
(lecture delivered at the Congress of the Romanian mathematicians, Brasov, June 2011) Using graph representations a new class of computable topological invariants associated with a tame real or angle valued map were recently introduced, providing a theory which can be viewed as an alternative to Morse-Novicov theory for real or angle valued Morse maps. The invariants are "barcodes" and "Jordan cells". From them one can derive all familiar topological invariants which can be derived via Morse-Novikov theory, like the Betti numbers and in the case of angle valued maps also the Novikov Betti numb…
Let A be an essential complex hyperplane arrangement in an n-dimensional complex vector space V. Let H denote the union of the hyperplanes, and M denote the complement to H in V. We develop the real-valued and circle-valued Morse theory for M and prove, in particular, that M has the homotopy type of a space obtained from a manifold fibered over a circle, by attaching cells of dimension n. We compute the Novikov homology of M for a large class of homomorphisms of the fundamental group of M to R.
We construct "barcodes" for the chain complexes over Novikov rings that arise in Novikov's Morse theory for closed one-forms and in Floer theory on not-necessarily-monotone symplectic manifolds. In the case of classical Morse theory these coincide with the barcodes familiar from persistent homology. Our barcodes completely characterize the filtered chain homotopy type of the chain complex; in particular they subsume in a natural way previous filtered Floer-theoretic invariants such as boundary depth and torsion exponents, and also reflect information about spectral invariants. We moreover prov…
S.P.Novikov developed an analog of the Morse theory for closed 1-forms. In this paper I suggest an analog of the Lusternik - Schnirelman theory for closed 1-forms.
We discuss some applications of the Morse-Novikov theory to some problems in modern physics, where appears a non-exact closed 1-form $ω$ (a multi-valued functional). We focus mainly our attention to the cohomology of the de Rham complex of a compact manifold $M^n$ with a deformed differential $d_ω=d +λω$. Using Witten's approach to the Morse theory one can estimate the number of critical points of $ω$ in terms of the cohomology of deformed de Rham complex with sufficiently large values of $λ$ (torsion-free Novikov's inequalities). We show that for an interesting class of solvmanifolds this coh…
We discuss controlled connectivity properties of closed 1-forms and their cohomology classes and relate them to the simple homotopy type of the Novikov complex. The degree of controlled connectivity of a closed 1-form depends only on positive multiples of its cohomology class and is related to the Bieri-Neumann-Strebel-Renz invariant. It is also related to the Morse theory of closed 1-forms. Given a controlled 0-connected cohomology class on a manifold M with n = dim M > 4 we can realize it by a closed 1-form which is Morse without critical points of index 0, 1, n-1 and n. If n = dim M > 5 and…
In this article, a spectral sequence analysis of a filtered Novikov complex $(\mathcal{N}_{\ast}(f),Δ)$ over $\mathbb{Z}((t))$ is developed with the goal of obtaining results relating the algebraic and dynamical settings. Specifically, the unfolding of a spectral sequence of $(\mathcal{N}_{\ast}(f),Δ)$ and the cancellation of its modules is associated to a one parameter family of circle valued Morse functions on a surface and the dynamical cancellations of its critical points. The data of a spectral sequence computed for $(\mathcal{N}_{\ast}(f),Δ)$ is encoded in a family of matrices $Δ^r$ prod…
