We consider properties of the total absolute geodesic curvature functional on circle immersions into a Riemann surface. In particular, we study its behavior under regular homotopies, its infima in regular homotopy classes, and the homotopy types of spaces of its local minima.
We consider properties of the total curvature functional on the space of 2-sphere immersions into 3-space. We show that the infimum over all sphere eversions of the maximum of the total curvature during an eversion is at most 8πand we establish a non-injectivity result for local minima.
We prove that for many degrees in a stable range the homotopy groups of the moduli space of metrics of positive scalar curvature on S^n and on other manifolds are non-trivial. This is achieved by further developing and then applying a family version of the surgery construction of Gromov-Lawson to an exotic smooth families of spheres due to Hatcher. As described, this works for all manifolds of suitable dimension and for the quotient of the space of metrics of positive scalar curvature by the (free) action of the subgroup of diffeomorphisms which fix a point and its tangent space. We also const…
we show that the space of metrics of positive scalar curvature on a manifold is, when nonempty, homotopy equivalent to a space of metrics of positive scalar curvature that restrict to a fixed metric near a given submanifold of codimension greater or equal than 3. Our main tool is a parameterized version of the Gromov-Lawson construction, which was used to show that the existence of a metric of positive scalar curvature on a manifold was invariant under surgeries in codimension greater or equal than 3.
A bounded curvature path is a continuously differentiable piecewise $C^2$ path with a bounded absolute curvature that connects two points in the tangent bundle of a surface. In this work, we analyze the homotopy classes of bounded curvature paths for points in the tangent bundle of the Euclidean plane. We show the existence of connected components of bounded curvature paths that do not correspond to those under (regular) homotopies obtaining the first results in the theory outside optimality. An application to robotics is presented.
Choose two points in the tangent bundle of the Euclidean plane $(x,X),(y,Y)\in T{ \mathbb R}^2$. In this work we characterise the immersed length minimising paths with a prescribed bound on the curvature starting at $x$, tangent to $X$; finishing at $y$, tangent to $Y$, in each connected component of the space of paths with a prescribed bound on the curvature from $(x,X)$ to $(y,Y)$.
Under mild assumptions on a group G, we prove that the class of complete Riemannian n-manifolds of uniformly bounded negative sectional curvatures and with the fundamental groups isomorphic to G breaks into finitely many tangential homotopy types. It follows that many aspherical manifolds do not admit complete negatively curved metrics with prescribed curvature bounds.
In this paper we show that for Riemannian manifolds with boundary the natural restriction map is a quasifibration between spaces of metrics of positive scalar curvature. We apply this result to study homotopy properties of spaces of such metrics on manifolds with boundary.
We study the homotopy type of the space of metrics of positive scalar curvature on high-dimensional compact spin manifolds. Hitchin used the fact that there are no harmonic spinors on a manifold with positive scalar curvature to construct a secondary index map from the space of positive scalar metrics to a suitable space from the real $K$-theory spectrum. Our main results concern the nontriviality of this map. We prove that for $2n \geq 6$, the natural $KO$-orientation from the infinite loop space of the Madsen--Tillmann--Weiss spectrum factors (up to homotopy) through the space of metrics of …
We show that the higher homotopy groups of the moduli space of torus-invariant positive scalar curvature metrics on certain quasitoric manifolds are non-trivial.
By introducing a refinement of the Goldman-Turaev Lie bialgebra, we interpret the divergence cocycle in the Kashiwara-Vergne problem and the Enomoto-Satoh obstructions for the surjectivity of the Johnson homomorphisms as some part of a regular homotopy version of the Turaev cobracket.
Linear upper bounds are provided for the size of the torsion homology of negatively curved manifolds of finite volume in all dimensions $d\ne 3$. This extends a classical theorem by Gromov. In dimension $3$, as opposed to the Betti numbers, the size of torsion homology is unbounded in terms of the volume. Moreover, there is a sequence of $3$-dimensional hyperbolic manifolds that converges to $\mathbb{H}^3$ in the Benjamini--Schramm topology while its normalized torsion in the first homology is dense in $[0,\infty]$. In dimension $d\geq 4$ a somewhat precise estimate is given for the number of …
We give geometric formulae which enable us to detect (completely in some cases) the regular homotopy class of an immersion with trivial normal bundle of a closed oriented 3-manifold into 5-space. These are analogues of the geometric formulae for the Smale invariants due to Ekholm and the second author. As a corollary, we show that two embeddings into 5-space of a closed oriented 3-manifold with no 2-torsion in the second cohomology are regularly homotopic if and only if they have Seifert surfaces with the same signature. We also show that there exist two embeddings $F_0$ and $F_8 : T^3 \hookri…
Two locally generic maps f,g : M^n --> R^{2n-1} are regularly homotopic if they lie in the same path-component of the space of locally generic maps. Our main result is that if n is not 3 and M^n is a closed n-manifold then the regular homotopy class of every locally generic map f : M^n --> R^{2n-1} is completely determined by the number of its singular points provided that f is singular (i.e., f is not an immersion).
In this paper we generalize the notion of regular homotopy of immersions of a closed connected n-manifold into R^{2n-1} to locally generic mappings. The main result is that if n=2 then two mappings with singularities are regularly homotopic if and only if they have the same number of cross-cap (or Whitney-umbrella) singularities. As an application, we get a description of the path-components of the space of those immersions of a surface into R^4 whose projections into R^3 are locally generic.
In this paper we study spaces of Riemannian metrics with lower bounds on intermediate curvatures. We show that the spaces of metrics of positive p-curvature and k-positive Ricci curvature on a given high-dimensional Spin-manifold have many non-trivial homotopy groups provided that the manifold admits such a metric.
We study algebraic conditions on a group G under which every properly discontinuous, isometric G-action on a Hadamard manifold has a G-invariant Busemann function. For such G we prove the following structure theorem: every open complete nonpositively curved Riemannian K(G,1) manifold that is homotopy equivalent to a finite complex of codimension >2 is an open regular neighborhood of a subcomplex of the same codimension. In this setting we show that each tangential homotopy type contains infinitely many open K(G,1) manifolds that admit no complete nonpositively curved metric even though their u…
We prove that any two irreducible cuspidal Hurwitz curves $C_0$ and $C_1$ (or more generally, curves with A-type singularities) in the Hirzebruch surface $F_N$ with coinciding homology classes and sets of singularities are regular homotopic; and symplectically regular homotopic if $C_0$ and $C_1$ are symplectic with respect to a compatible symplectic form.
We use the cobordism category constructed in arXiv:1703.01047 to the study the homotopy type of the space of positive scalar curvature metrics on a spin manifold of dimension > 4. Our methods give an alternative proof and extension of a recent theorem of Botvinnik, Ebert, and Randal-Williams from arXiv:1411.7408.
Let N and P be smooth manifolds of dimensions n and p (n \geq p \geq 2) respectively. Let Ω(N,P) denote an open subspace of J^{infty}(N,P) which consists of all regular jets and jets with prescribed singularities of types A_{i}, D_{j} and E_{k}. An Ω-regular map f:N \to P refers to a smooth map having only singularities in Ω(N,P) and satisfy the transversality condition. We will prove the homotopy principle in the existence level for Ω-regular maps.
We show that the hyperbolization of polyhedra pulls back regular neighborhoods of PL submanifolds. Applying this to the Riemannian version of the hyperbolization due to Ontaneda gives open complete manifolds of pinched negative curvature that are homotopy equivalent to closed smooth manifolds but contain no smooth spines. We also find open complete negatively pinched manifolds that are homotopy equivalent to closed non-smoothable manifolds.
We construct smooth bundles with base and fiber products of two spheres whose total spaces have non-vanishing $\hat{A}$-genus. We then use these bundles to locate non-trivial rational homotopy groups of spaces of Riemannian metrics with lower curvature bounds for all Spin-manifolds of dimension six or at least ten which admit such a metric and are a connected sum of some manifold and $S^n \times S^n$ or $S^n \times S^{n+1}$, respectively. We also construct manifolds $M$ whose spaces of Riemannian metrics of positive scalar curvature have homotopy groups that contain elements of infinite order …
We construct non-trivial elements of order 2 in the homotopy groups $π_{8j+1+*} Diff(D^6,\partial)$, for * congruent 1 or 2 modulo 8, which are detected by the "assembling homomorphism" (giving rise to the Gromoll filtration), followed by the alpha-invariant in $KO_*=Z/2$. These elements are constructed by means of Morlet's homotopy equivalence between $Diff(D^6,\partial)$ and $Ω^7(PL_6/O_6)$, and Toda brackets in $PL_6/O_6$. We also construct non-trivial elements of order 2 in $π_* PL_m$ for every m greater or equal to 6 and * congruent to 1 or 2 modulo 8, which are detected by the alpha-inva…
We prove the existence of elements of infinite order in the homotopy groups of the spaces $\mathcal{R}_{Ric>0}(M)$ and $\mathcal{R}_{sec>0}(M)$ of positive Ricci and positive sectional curvature, provided that $M$ is high-dimensional and Spin, admits such a metric and has a non-vanishing rational Pontryagin class.
The abstract link L_d of the complex isolated singularity x^2 + y^2 + z^2 + v^{2d} = 0 is diffeomorphic to S^3 \times S^2. We classify the embedded links of these singularities up to regular homotopies precomposed with diffeomorphisms of S^3 \times S^2. Let us denote by i_d the inclusion of L_d in S^7. We show that for arbitrary diffeomorphisms φ_d of S^3 \times S^2 with L_d the compositions i_d \circ φ_d are image regularly homotopic for two values d_1 and d_2 if and only if d_1-d_2 is even.
A smooth curve $γ: [0,1] \to \Ss^2$ is locally convex if its geodesic curvature is positive at every point. J. A. Little showed that the space of all locally convex curves $γ$ with $γ(0) = γ(1) = e_1$ and $γ'(0) = γ'(1) = e_2$ has three connected components $L_{-1,c}$, $L_{+1}$, $L_{-1,n}$. The space $\cL_{-1,c}$ is known to be contractible. We prove that $\cL_{+1}$ and $\cL_{-1,n}$ are homotopy equivalent to $(Ω\Ss^3) \vee \Ss^2 \vee \Ss^6 \vee \Ss^{10} \vee \cdots$ and $(Ω\Ss^3) \vee \Ss^4 \vee \Ss^8 \vee \Ss^{12} \vee \cdots$, respectively. As a corollary, we deduce the homotopy type of the…
Let $M$ be a simply connected spin manifold of dimension at least six which admits a metric of positive scalar curvature. We show that the observer moduli space of positive scalar curvature metrics on $M$ has non-trivial higher homotopy groups. Moreover, denote by $\mathcal{M}_0^+(M)$ the moduli space of positive scalar cuvature metrics on $M$ associated to the group of orientation-preserving diffeomorphisms of $M$. We show that if $M$ belongs to a certain class of manifolds which includes $(2n-2)$-connected $(4n-2)$-dimensional manifolds, then the fundamental group of $\mathcal{M}_0^+(M)$ is …
While the topology of the space of all smooth immersed curves on the $2$-sphere $\mathbb{S}^2$ that start and end at given points in given directions is well known, it is an open problem to understand the homotopy type of its subspaces consisting of the curves whose geodesic curvatures are constrained to a prescribed proper open interval. In this article we prove that, under certain circumstances for endpoints and end directions, these subspaces are not homotopically equivalent to the whole space. Moreover, we give an explicit construction of exotic generators for some homotopy and cohomology …
Immersions of graphs to the projective plane are studied. A classification of immersions up to regular homotopy is given. A complete invariant of immersions up to regular homotopy is constructed. Equivalence classes are described.
Let GI denote the space of all generic immersions of a surface F into a 3-manifold M. Let q(H_t) denote the number mod 2 of quadruple points of a generic regular homotopy H_t : F -> M. We are interested in defining an invariant Q : GI -> Z/2 such that q(H_t) = Q(H_0) - Q(H_1) for any generic regular homotopy H_t : F -> M. Such an invariant exists iff q=0 for any "closed" generic regular homotopy (abbreviated CGRH.) Max and Banchoff proved that for any CGRH H_t: S^2 -> R^3 indeed q(H_t)=0. We generalize their result as follows: Theorem 3.9: Let F be a system of closed surfaces, and let H_t : F …
Let p be an odd regular prime, and assume that the Lichtenbaum-Quillen conjecture holds for K(Z[1/p]) at p. Then the p-primary homotopy type of the smooth Whitehead spectrum Wh(*) is described. A suspended copy of the cokernel-of-J spectrum splits off, and the torsion homotopy of the remainder equals the torsion homotopy of the fiber of the restricted S^1-transfer map t: SigmaCP^infty--> S. The homotopy groups of Wh(*) are determined in a range of degrees, and the cohomology of Wh(*) is expressed as an A-module in all degrees, up to an extension. These results have geometric topological interp…
We investigate one-point reduction methods of finite topological spaces. These methods allow one to study homotopy theory of cell complexes by means of elementary moves of their finite models. We also introduce the notion of h-regular CW-complex, generalizing the concept of regular CW-complex, and prove that the h-regular CW-complexes, which are a sort of combinatorial-up-to-homotopy objects, are modeled (up to homotopy) by their associated finite spaces. This is accomplished by generalizing a classical result of McCord on simplicial complexes.
A smooth curve $γ: [0,1] \to S^2$ is locally convex if its geodesic curvature is positive at every point. J. A. Little showed that the space of all locally positive curves $γ$ with $γ(0) = γ(1) = e_1$ and $γ'(0) = γ'(1) = e_2$ has three connected components $L_{-1,c}$, $L_{+1}$, $L_{-1,n}$. The space $L_{-1,c}$ is known to be contractible but the topology of the other two connected components is not well understood. We prove that all connected components of $L_I$ are simply connected, that $H^2(L_{+1};Z) = Z^2$ and $H^2(L_{-1,n};Z) = Z$.
We study the homotopy and cohomology of these spaces. In particular, for $L_{-1} = L_{-1,c} \sqcup L_{-1,n}$, we show that $\dim H^{2k}(L_{(-1)^{k}}, \RR) \ge 1$, that $\dim H^{2k}…
Let Z be an Alexandrov space with curvature bounded below by -1 such that Z is homotopy equivalent to a real hyperbolic manifold M. It is known that the volume of Z is not smaller than the volume of M. If the volumes are equal, this short paper proves that the homotopy equivalence is homotopic to an isometric homeomorphism. The main analytic tool is a theorem of Reshetnyak about quasiregular maps.
We discuss the homotopy type and the cohomology of spaces of locally convex parametrized curves gamma: [0,1] -> S^2, i.e., curves with positive geodesic curvature. The space of all such curves with gamma(0) = gamma(1) = e_1 and gamma'(0) = gamma'(1) = e_2 is known to have three connected components X_{-1,c}, X_1, X_{-1}. We show several results concerning the homotopy type and cohomology of these spaces. In particular, X_{-1,c} is contractible, X_1 and X_{-1} are simply connected, pi_2(X_{-1}) contains a copy of Z and pi_2(X_1) contains a copy of Z^2. Also, H^n(X_{1}, R) and H^n(X_{-1}, R) are…
We show that a regular cover of a general topological space provides structure similar to a triangulation. In this general setting we define analogues of simplicial maps and prove their existence and uniqueness up to homotopy. As an application we give simple proofs of sharpened versions of nerve theorems of K. Borsuk and A. Weil, which state that the nerve of a regular cover is homotopy equivalent to the underlying space. Next we prove a nerve theorem for a class of spaces with uniformly bounded extension dimension. In particular we prove that the canonical map from a separable metric n-dimen…
In this survey article, given a smooth closed manifold M we study the space of Riemannian metrics of positive scalar curvature on M. A long-standing question is: when is this space non-empty (i.e. when does M admit a metric of positive scalar curvature)? More generally: what is the topology of this space? For example, what are its homotopy groups? Higher index theory of the Dirac operator is the basic tool to address these questions. This has seen tremendous development in recent years, and in this survey we will discuss some of the most pertinent examples. In particular, we will show how adva…
Persistent homology has emerged as a novel tool for data analysis in the past two decades. However, there are still very few shapes or even manifolds whose persistent homology barcodes (say of the Vietoris-Rips complex) are fully known. Towards this direction, let $P_n$ be the boundary of a regular polygon in the plane with $n$ sides; we describe the homotopy types of Vietoris-Rips complexes of $P_n$. Indeed, when $n=(k+1)!!$ is an odd double factorial, we provide a complete characterization of the homotopy types and persistent homology of the Vietoris-Rips complexes of $P_n$ up to a scale par…
In this paper we define two regular homotopy invariants c and i for immersions of oriented 3-manifolds into R^5 in a geometric manner. The pair (c(f),i(f)) completely describes the regular homotopy class of the immersion f. The invariant i corresponds to the 3-dimensional obstruction that arises from Hirsch-Smale theory and extends the one defined in [10] for immersions with trivial normal bundle.
