Let N and P be smooth manifolds of dimensions n and p (n \geq p \geq 2) respectively. Let Ω(N,P) denote an open subspace of J^{infty}(N,P) which consists of all regular jets and jets with prescribed singularities of types A_{i}, D_{j} and E_{k}. An Ω-regular map f:N \to P refers to a smooth map having only singularities in Ω(N,P) and satisfy the transversality condition. We will prove the homotopy principle in the existence level for Ω-regular maps.
We establish an interesting connection between Morin singularities and stable homotopy groups of spheres. We apply this connection to computations of cobordism groups of certain singular maps. The differentials of the spectral sequence computing these cobordism groups are given by the composition multiplication in the stable homotopy groups of spheres.
Let N and P be smooth manifolds of dimensions n and p (n>=p>=2). Let Omega^{I}(N,P) denote an open subspace of J(N,P) which consists of all Boardman submanifolds Sigma^{J}(N,P) with J=< I in the lexicographic order. We will prove the homotopy principle in the existence level for Omega^{I}(N,P).
We establish a connection between Morin singularities and stable homotopy groups of spheres. This connection allows us to describe how the images of singularity strata behave around the image of a more complicated stratum.
Let P be a connected smooth p-manifold. We describe the group of all cobordism classes of smooth maps of n-manifolds to P with singularities of a given $cal K$-invariant class in terms of certain stable homotopy groups by applying the relative homotopy principle on the existence level. We also deal with the oriented version and construct a classifying space to which this oriented cobordism group is represented as the set of homotopy classes of P in the codimension n<p and n\geqq p\geqq 2.
We will prove the relative homotopy principle for smooth maps with singularities of a given {\cal K}-invariant class with a mild condition. We next study a filtration of the group of homotopy self-equivalences of a given manifold P by considering singularities of non-negative {\cal K}-codimensions.
Let $N$ and $P$ be smooth closed manifolds of dimensions $n$ and $p$ respectively. Given a Thom-Boardman symbol $I$, a smooth map $f:N\to P$ is called an $Ω^{I}$-regular map if and only if the Thom-Boardman symbol of each singular point of $f$ is not greater than $I$ in the lexicographic order. We will represent the group of all cobordism classes of $Ω^{I}$-regular maps of $n$-dimensional closed manifolds into $P$ in terms of certain stable homotopy groups. As an application we will study the relationship among the stable homotopy groups of spheres, the above cobordism group and higher singula…
A so-called special generic map is by definition a map of smooth manifolds all of whose singularities are definite fold points. It is in general an open problem posed by Saeki in 1993 to determine the set of integers $p$ for which a given homotopy sphere admits a special generic map into $\mathbb{R}^{p}$. By means of the technique of Stein factorization we introduce and study certain special generic maps of homotopy spheres into Euclidean spaces called standard. Modifying a construction due to Weiss, we show that standard special generic maps give naturally rise to a filtration of the group of…
The abstract link L_d of the complex isolated singularity x^2 + y^2 + z^2 + v^{2d} = 0 is diffeomorphic to S^3 \times S^2. We classify the embedded links of these singularities up to regular homotopies precomposed with diffeomorphisms of S^3 \times S^2. Let us denote by i_d the inclusion of L_d in S^7. We show that for arbitrary diffeomorphisms φ_d of S^3 \times S^2 with L_d the compositions i_d \circ φ_d are image regularly homotopic for two values d_1 and d_2 if and only if d_1-d_2 is even.
We affirmatively address the question of whether the proposed link homotopy invariant $ω$ of Li is well-defined. It is also shown that if one wishes to adapt the homotopy invariant $τ$ of Schneiderman-Teichner to a link homotopy invariant of link maps, the result coincides with $ω$.
Let $M$ be a topological space that admits a free involution $τ$, and let $N$ be a topological space. A homotopy class $β\in [ M,N ]$ is said to have {\it the Borsuk-Ulam property with respect to $τ$} if for every representative map $f: M \to N$ of $β$, there exists a point $x \in M$ such that $f(τ(x))= f(x)$. In this paper, we determine the homotopy classes of maps from the $2$-torus $T^2$ to the Klein bottle $K^2$ that possess the Borsuk-Ulam property with respect to a free involution $τ_1$ of $T^2$ for which the orbit space is $T^2$. Our results are given in terms of a certain family of hom…
We give criteria for Morin singularities for germs of maps into lower dimensions. As an application, we study the bifurcation of Lefschetz singularities.
In this paper we classify the homotopy classes of proper maps $E\rightarrow \mathbb R^k$, where $E$ is a vector bundle over a compact Hausdorff space. As a corollary we compute the homotopy classes of proper maps $\mathbb R^n\rightarrow \mathbb R^k$. We find a stability range of such maps. We conclude with some remarks on framed submanifolds of non-compact manifolds, the relationship with proper homotopy classes of maps and the Pontryagin-Thom construction.
We prove the analogue of the Concordance Implies Isotopy in Codimension $\ge 3$ Theorem for link maps, together with some other its singular analogues. In the case of spherical link maps, a stronger result was independently obtained by P. Teichner (by different methods).
Let $M$ be a topological space that admits a free involution $τ$, and let $N$ be a topological space. A homotopy class $β\in [ M,N ]$ is said to have the Borsuk-Ulam property with respect to $τ$ if for every representative map $f: M \to N$ of $β$, there exists a point $x \in M$ such that $f(τ(x))= f(x)$. In this paper, we determine the homotopy class of maps from the $2$-torus $T^2$ to the Klein bottle $K^2$ that possess the Borsuk-Ulam property with respect to any free involution of $T^2$ for which the orbit space is $K^2$. Our results are given in terms of a certain family of homomorphisms i…
We give an alternative to Postnikov's homotopy classification of maps from 3-dimensional CW-complexes to homogeneous spaces G/H of Lie groups. It describes homotopy classes in terms of lifts to the group G and is suitable for extending the notion of homotopy to Sobolev maps. This is required for applications to variational problems of mathematical physics.
We give chain homotopy maps of Khovanov-type link homology of a universal differential. The universal differential, discussed by Mikhail Khovanov, Marco Mackaay, Paul Turner and Pedro Vaz, contains the original Khovanov's differential and Lee's differential. We also consider the conditions of any differential ensuring the Reidemeister invariance for the chain homotopy maps.
This is the second of a series of papers which are devoted to a comprehensive theory of maps between orbifolds. In this paper, we develop a basic machinery for studying homotopy classes of such maps. It contains two parts: (1) the construction of a set of algebraic invariants -- the homotopy groups, and (2) an analog of CW-complex theory. As a corollary of this machinery, the classical Whitehead theorem which asserts that a weak homotopy equivalence is a homotopy equivalence is extended to the orbifold category.
We shall give useful criteria of lips, beaks and swallowtail singularities of smooth map from the plane into the plane. As an application of criteria, we will discuss the singularities of Cauchy problem of single conservation law.
We prove that any two irreducible cuspidal Hurwitz curves $C_0$ and $C_1$ (or more generally, curves with A-type singularities) in the Hirzebruch surface $F_N$ with coinciding homology classes and sets of singularities are regular homotopic; and symplectically regular homotopic if $C_0$ and $C_1$ are symplectic with respect to a compatible symplectic form.
In this paper we generalize the notion of regular homotopy of immersions of a closed connected n-manifold into R^{2n-1} to locally generic mappings. The main result is that if n=2 then two mappings with singularities are regularly homotopic if and only if they have the same number of cross-cap (or Whitney-umbrella) singularities. As an application, we get a description of the path-components of the space of those immersions of a surface into R^4 whose projections into R^3 are locally generic.
Milnor fibrations have been studied since 1960's. In this paper, we study singular points of differentiable maps, called Milnor fibration product maps, obtained by several Milnor fibrations. We give a characterization of singular points of such product maps, and for the case of certain weighted homogeneous polynomials, a criterion for a fold point together with its index.
Lips and swallow-tails are generic local moves of singularities of a smooth map to a 2-manifold. We prove that these moves of singularities of the product map of two functions on a 3-manifold can be realized by isotopies of the functions.
Milnor fibrations were extended by Mutsuo Oka for certain mixed polynomial. In this paper, we study singular points of differentiable maps into the 2-dimensional torus, called Milnor fibration product maps, obtained by several Milnor fibrations for mixed polynomial. We give a characterization of singular points of such product maps, and for the case of certain polar weighted homogeneous polynomials, a criterion for a fold singular point.
Two locally generic maps f,g : M^n --> R^{2n-1} are regularly homotopic if they lie in the same path-component of the space of locally generic maps. Our main result is that if n is not 3 and M^n is a closed n-manifold then the regular homotopy class of every locally generic map f : M^n --> R^{2n-1} is completely determined by the number of its singular points provided that f is singular (i.e., f is not an immersion).
In this paper, we show that for every non-nilpotent hyperbolic map $f$ on an infra-nilmanifold, the $\textrm{HPer}(f)$ is cofinite in $\mathbb{N}$. This generalizes a similar result for expanding maps. Moreover, we prove that for every nilpotent map $f$ on an infra-nilmanifold, $\textrm{HPer}(f)=\{1\}$.
We study the homotopical minimal periods for maps on infra-solvmanifolds of type (R) using the density of the homotopical minimal period set in the natural numbers. This extends the result of [10] from flat manifolds to infra-solvmanifolds of type (R). Applying our main result we will list all possible maps on infra-solvmanifolds up to dimension three for which the corresponding density is positive.
Y. Eliashberg and N. Mishachev introduced the notion of wrinkled embedding to show that any tangential homotopy can be approximated by a homotopy of topological embeddings with mild singularities. This concept plays an important role in Contact Topology: The loose legendrian h-principle of E. Murphy relies on wrinkled embeddings to manipulate the legendrian front. Similarly, the simplification of legendrian front singularities was proven by D. Álvarez-Gavela by defining the notion of wrinkled legendrian. This paper and its sequel generalise these ideas to general jet spaces. The main theorem i…
Lipschitz and horizontal maps from an $n$-dimensional space into the $(2n+1)$-dimensional Heisenberg group $\H^n$ are abundant, while maps from higher-dimensional spaces are much more restricted. DeJarnette-Hajłasz-Lukyanenko-Tyson constructed horizontal maps from $S^k$ to $\H^n$ which factor through $n$-spheres and showed that these maps have no smooth horizontal fillings. In this paper, however, we build on an example of Kaufman to show that these maps sometimes have Lipschitz fillings. This shows that the Lipschitz and the smooth horizontal homotopy groups of a space may differ. Conversely,…
In this paper we study the set of projective maps between compact proper convex real projective manifolds. We show that this set contains only finitely many distinct homotopy classes and each homotopy class has the structure of a real projective manifold. When the target manifold is strictly convex, our results imply that each non-trivial homotopy class contains at most one projective map. These results are motivated by the theory of holomorphic maps between compact complex manifolds.
We show that there exist non-trivial piecewise-linear (PL) knots with isolated singularities $S^{n-2}\subset S^n$, $n\geq 5$, whose complements have the homotopy type of a circle. This is in contrast to the case of smooth, PL locally-flat, and topological locally-flat knots, for which it is known that if the complement has the homotopy type of a circle, then the knot is trivial.
Cobordism groups of cooriented fold maps of codimension 1 are computed completely. Namely their odd torsion part coincides with that of the stable homotopy group of spheres in the same dimension, while the 2-primary part is the kernel of the Kahn-Priddy map. (The Kahn-Priddy map is an epimorhism of the stable homotopy group of the infinite dimensional real projective space onto the 2-primary part of the stable homotopy group of spheres). Analogous results - modulo small primes - are obtained for cusp maps and more complicated Morin maps as well.
The settings for homotopical algebra---categories such as simplicial groups, simplicial rings, $A_\infty$ spaces, $E_\infty$ ring spectra, etc.---are often equivalent to categories of algebras over some monad or triple $T$. In such cases, $T$ is acting on a nice simplicial model category in such a way that $T$ descends to a monad on the homotopy category and defines a category of homotopy $T$-algebras. In this setting there is a forgetful functor from the homotopy category of $T$-algebras to the category of homotopy $T$-algebras. Under suitable hypotheses we provide an obstruction theory, in t…
This paper centers around two basic problems of topological coincidence theory. First, try to measure (with help of Nielsen and minimum numbers) how far a given pair of maps is from being loose, i.e. from being homotopic to a pair of coincidence free maps. Secondly, describe the set of loose pairs of homotopy classes. We give a brief (and necessarily very incomplete) survey of some old and new advances concerning the first problem. Then we attack the second problem mainly in the setting of homotopy groups. This leads also to a very natural filtration of all homotopy sets. Explicit calculations…
Let f_1 and f_2 be real analytic germs of independent variables. In this paper, we assume that f_1, f_2 and f = f_1 + f_2 satisfy a_f -condition. Then we show that the tubular Milnor fiber of f is homotopy equivalent to the join of tubular Milnor fibers of f_1 and f_2.
We establish a full $h-$principle ($C^0-$close, relative, parametric) for the simplification of singularities of Lagrangian and Legendrian fronts. More precisely, we prove that if there is no homotopy theoretic obstruction to simplifying the singularities of tangency of a Lagrangian or Legendrian submanifold with respect to an ambient foliation by Lagrangian or Legendrian leaves, then the simplification can be achieved by means of a Hamiltonian isotopy.
We study the question of existence of a Riemannian metric of positive scalar curvature metric on manifolds with the Sullivan-Baas singularities. The manifolds we consider are Spin and simply connected. We prove an analogue of the Gromov-Lawson Conjecture for such manifolds in the case of particular type of singularities. We give an affirmative answer when such manifolds with singularities accept a metric of positive scalar curvature in terms of the index of the Dirac operator valued in the corresponding "K-theories with singularities". The key ideas are based on the construction due to Stolz, …
We present a new approach to simple homotopy theory of polyhedra using finite topological spaces. We define the concept of collapse of a finite space and prove that this new notion corresponds exactly to the concept of a simplicial collapse. More precisely, we show that a collapse of finite spaces induces a simplicial collapse of their associated simplicial complexes. Moreover, a simplicial collapse induces a collapse of the associated finite spaces. This establishes a one-to-one correspondence between simple homotopy types of finite simplicial complexes and simple equivalence classes of finit…
In terms of category theory, the Gromov homotopy principle for a set valued functor $F$ asserts that the functor $F$ can be induced from a homotopy functor. Similarly, we say that the bordism principle for an abelian group valued functor $F$ holds if the functor $F$ can be induced from a (co)homology functor. We examine the bordism principle in the case of functors given by (co)bordism groups of maps with prescribed singularities. Our main result implies that if a family $R$ of prescribed singularity types satisfies certain mild conditions, then there exists an infinite loop space $B(R)$ such …
