In this paper we study the set of projective maps between compact proper convex real projective manifolds. We show that this set contains only finitely many distinct homotopy classes and each homotopy class has the structure of a real projective manifold. When the target manifold is strictly convex, our results imply that each non-trivial homotopy class contains at most one projective map. These results are motivated by the theory of holomorphic maps between compact complex manifolds.
We show that the connected sum of two copies of real projective 3-space does not admit a real projective structure. This is the first known example of a connected 3-manifold without a real projective structure.
We prove that non-compact finite volume hyperbolic 3-manifolds that satisfy a mild cohomological condition (infinitesimal rigidity) admit a family of properly convex deformations of their complete hyperbolic structure where the ends become generalized cusps of type 1 or type 2. We also discuss methods for controlling which types of cusp occur. Using these methods we produce the first known example of a 1-cusped hyperbolic 3-manifold that admits a convex projective structure with a type 2 cusp. We also use these techniques to produce new 1-cusped manifolds that admit a convex projective structu…
We consider Gromov-Thurston examples of negatively curved n-manifolds which do not admit metrics of constant sectional curvature. We show that for each n some of the Gromov-Thurston manifolds admit strictly convex real-projective structures.
In this paper we define strongly projectively flatness of holomorphic maps into the complex Grassmannian manifold, which is a kind of generalization of holomorphic maps into the complex projective space and prove a rigidity of equivariant strongly projectively flat maps of compact simply connected homogeneous Kähler manifolds.
We prove entropy rigidity for finite volume strictly convex projective manifolds in dimensions $\geq 3$, generalizing the work of arXiv:1708.03983 to the finite volume setting. The rigidity theorem uses the techniques of Besson, Courtois, and Gallot's entropy rigidity theorem. It implies uniform lower bounds on the volume of any finite volume strictly convex projective manifold in dimensions $\geq 3$.
An identity of conformal-projective curvature tensor of a statistical manifold is studied in this paper. The relation between the constancy of curvature and conformal-projective flatness of statistical manifolds is also discussed.
In this paper we compute the mapping class group of simply-connected closed smooth manifolds $M$ with integral homology $H_{*}(M) \cong \mathbb Z \oplus \mathbb Z \oplus \mathbb Z$ provided that $\dim M \ne 4$.
Y. Benoist proved that if a closed three-manifold M admits an indecomposable convex real projective structure, then M is topologically the union along tori and Klein bottles of finitely many sub-manifolds each of which admits a complete finite volume hyperbolic structure on its interior. We describe some initial results in the direction of a potential converse to Benoist's theorem. We show that a cusped hyperbolic three-manifold may, under certain assumptions, be deformed to convex projective structures with totally geodesic torus boundary. Such structures may be convexly glued together whenev…
Let $(M,P\nabla_M)$ be a compact projective manifold and $Aut(M,P\nabla_M)$ its group of automorphisms. The purpose of this paper is to study the topological properties of $(M,P\nabla_M)$ if $Aut(M,P\nabla_M))$ is not discrete by applying the results that I have shown in [13] and the Benzekri's functor which associates to a projective manifold a radiant affine manifold. This enables us to show that the orbits of the connected component of $Aut(M,P\nabla_M)$ are immersed projective submanifolds. We also classify $3$-dimensional compact projective manifolds such that $dim(Aut(M,P\nabla_M))\geq 2…
$G$-deformability of maps into projective space is characterised by the existence of certain Lie algebra valued 1-forms. This characterisation gives a unified way to obtain well known results regarding deformability in different geometries.
We study the global property of local holomorphic isometric mappings from a class of Kahler manifolds into a product of projective algebraic manifolds with induced Fubini-Study metrics, where isometric factors are allowed to be negative.
The authors give a complete classification of projective threefolds admitting a holomorphic normal projective connection. Moreover, they prove a general structure theorem on complex projective manifolds admitting a holomorphic normal projective connection, saying in particular, that any such manifold is either the projective space or minimal in the sense of Mori.
The paper is devoted to the investigation of four-dimensional Kahler manifolds admitting non-affine H-projective mappings. We find all such manifolds which are non-Einstein. In the paper also Kahler manifolds admitting infinitesimal H-projective transformations are determined. It is proved that the class of Kahler manifolds admitting H-projective mappings includes generalized equidistant Kahler manifolds. The explicit expression for the metrics of Ricci-flat four-dimensional generalized equidistant manifolds is given.
We show that for a closed Riemannian manifold the quotient of the group of projective transformations by the group of isometries contains at most two elements unless the metric has constant positive sectional curvature or every projective transformation is an affine transformation.
Grafting is a surgery on Riemann surfaces introduced by Thurston which connects hyperbolic geometry and the theory of projective structures on surfaces. We will discuss the space of projective structures in terms of the Thurston's geometric parametrization given by grafting. From this approach we will prove that on any compact Riemann surface with genus greater than $1$ there exist infinitely many projective structures with Fuchsian holonomy representations. In course of the proof it will turn out that grafting is closely related to harmonic maps between surfaces.
We prove an inequality between the sum of the Betti numbers of a complex projective manifold and its total curvature, and we characterize the complex projective manifolds whose total curvature is minimal. These results extend the classical theorems of Chern and Lashof to complex projective space.
In this paper, we extend a result of Gao Chen regarding the solvability of the twisted deformed Hermitian Yang-Mills equations on compact Kähler manifolds to allow for the twisting function to be non-constant and slightly negative in all dimensions. Using this result, we prove that the twisted supercritical dHYM equation on compact, projective manifolds can be solved provided certain numerical conditions are satisfied.
We prove a conjecture saying that complex projective space has maximal volume (degree) among all toric Kaehler-Einstein manifolds of dimension n. The proof is inspired by our recent work on sharp Moser-Trudinger and Brezis-Merle type inequalities for the complex Monge-Ampere operator, but is essentially self-contained.
We show that for any complete connected Kähler manifold the index of the group of complex affine transformations in the group of c-projective transformations is at most two unless the Kähler manifold is isometric to complex projective space equipped with a positive constant multiple of the Fubini-Study metric. This establishes a stronger version of the recently proved Yano-Obata conjecture for complete Kähler manifolds.
We give an elementary proof to the asymptotic expansion formula of Rochon-Zhang for the unique complete Kähler-Einstein metric of Cheng-Yau, Kobayashi, Tian-Yau and Bando on quasi-projective manifolds. The main tools are the solution formula for second order ODE's with constant coefficients and spectral theory for Laplacian operator on a closed manifold.
We estimate the dimensions of the spaces of holomorphic sections of certain line bundles to give improved lower bounds on the index of complex isotropic harmonic maps to complex projective space from the sphere and torus, and in some cases from higher genus surfaces.
We show that the natural S^1-bundle over a projective special Kaehler manifold carries the geometry of a proper affine hypersphere endowed with a Sasakian structure. The construction generalizes the geometry of the Hopf-fibration $\Sr^{2n+1} \longrightarrow \CP^n$ in the context of projective special Kaehler manifolds. As an application we have that a natural circle bundle over the Kuranishi moduli space of a Calabi-Yau threefold is a Lorentzian proper affine hypersphere.
Suppose that $X$ is a projective manifold whose tangent bundle $T_X$ contains a locally free strictly nef subsheaf. We prove that $X$ is isomorphic to a projective bundle over a hyperbolic manifold. Moreover, if the fundamental group $π_1(X)$ is virtually abelian, then $X$ is isomorphic to a projective space.
In his recent work \cite{Y1}, X. Yang proved a conjecture raised by Yau in 1982 (\cite{Yau82}), which states that any compact Kähler manifold with positive holomorphic sectional curvature must be projective. In this note, we prove that any compact Hermitian manifold $X$ with positive real bisectional curvature, its hodge number $h^{1,0}=h^{2,0}=h^{n-1,0}=h^{n,0}=0$. In particular, if in addition $X$ is Kähler, then $X$ is projective. Also, it is rationally connected manifold when $n=3$. This partially confirms the conjecture 1.11 \cite{Y1} which is proposed by X. Yang.
Two Kaehler metrics on one complex manifold are said to be c-projectively equivalent if their J-planar curves, i.e., curves defined by the property that their acceleration is complex proportional to their velocity, coincide. The degree of mobility of a Kaehler metric is the dimension of the space of metrics that are c-projectively equivalent to it. We give the list of all possible values of the degree of mobility of simply connected 2n-dimensional Riemannian Kaehler manifolds. We also describe all such values under the additional assumption that the metric is Einstein. As an application, we de…
The spaces of harmonic maps of the projective plane to the four-dimensional sphere are investigated in this paper by means of twistor lifts. It is shown that such spaces are empty in case of even harmonic degree. In case of harmonic degree less than 6 it was shown that such spaces are path-connected and an explicit parameterization of the canonical representatives was found. In addition, the last section summarizes known results for harmonic maps of the two-dimensional sphere to the four-dimensional sphere of harmonic degree less than 6.
We construct a compact convex generating set $\mathcal{C}_n$ of the moduli set of closed connected projective special real manifolds of fixed dimension $n$. We show that a closed connected projective special real manifold corresponds to an inner point of $\mathcal{C}_n$ if and only if it has regular boundary behaviour. Our results can be used to describe deformations of 5d supergravity theories with complete scalar geometries.
On a manifold with a projective connection we canonically assign a second order differential operator acting on the algebra of all densities to any tensor density $S^{ij}$ of fixed weight $λ$. In particular, this implies that on any projectively connected manifold, a `bracket' (symmetric biderivation) on the algebra of functions extends canonically to the algebra of densities.
Assume that a projective variety is uniformly valuatively stable with respect to a polarization. We show that the projective variety is uniformly valuatively stable with respect to any polarization sufficiently close to the original polarization. The definition of uniformly valuatively stability in this paper is stronger than that given by Dervan and Legendre in \cite{D-L20}. We also define the valuative stability for the transcendental Kähler classes. Our openness result can be extended to the Kähler cone of projective manifolds.
For compact CR manifolds of hypersurface type which embed in complex projective space, we show that for all k large enough there exist linear systems of ${\mathcal{O}}(k)$ which when restricted to the CR manifold are generic in a suitable sense. These systems are constructed using approximately holomorphic geometry.
We give a characterization of the boundaries of holomorphic chains in complex projective space in terms of certain non-linear moment conditions. This extends previous work of the authors and complements results of Dolbeault and Henkin.
The main theorem of this paper is a result of estimated transversality with respect to stratifications of jet spaces in the approximately holomorphic category over an almost-complex manifold. The notion of asymptotic ampleness of complex vector bundles over an almost-complex manifold is also discussed, as well as applications to the construction of maps with generic singularities from compact symplectic manifolds to projective spaces.
A study is made of 4-dimensional Lorentz manifolds which are projectively related, that is, whose Levi-Civita connections give rise to the same (unparameterised) geodesics. A brief review of some relevant recent work is provided and a list of new results connecting projective relatedness and the holonomy type of the Lorentz manifold in question is given. This necessitates a review of the possible holonomy groups for such manifolds which, in turn, requires a certain convenient classification of the associated curvature tensors. These reviews are provided.
In a previous paper, we proved that a projective Kähler manifold of positive total scalar curvature is uniruled. At the other end of the spectrum, it is a well-known theorem of Campana and Kollár-Miyaoka-Mori that a projective Kähler manifold of positive Ricci curvature is rationally connected. In the present work, we investigate the intermediate notion of $k$-positive Ricci curvature and prove that for a projective $n$-dimensional Kähler manifold of $k$-positive Ricci curvature the MRC fibration has generic fibers of dimension at least $n-k+1$. We also establish an analogous result for projec…
Paper withdrawn due to errors (superseded by math.AG/0604303). Proposition 11.4 is false, Section 12 is false, and the main statement is true only for bundles $B$ with $c_1(B)$ SU(2)-invariant.
We study the topology of the space of harmonic maps from $S^2$ to \CP 2$. We prove that the subspaces consisting of maps of a fixed degree and energy are path connected. By a result of Guest and Ohnita it follows that the same is true for the space of harmonic maps to $\CP n$ for $n\geq 2$. We show that the components of maps to $\CP 2$ are complex manifolds.
Given a projective sequence of Banach bundles, each one provided with a of weak symplectic form, we look for conditions under which, the corresponding sequence of weak symplectic forms gives rise to weak symplectic form on the projective limit bundle. Then we apply this results to the tangent bundle of a projective limit of Banach manifolds. This naturally leads to ask about conditions under which the Darboux Theorem is also true on the projective limit of Banach manifolds. We will give some necessary and some sufficient conditions so that such a result is true. Then we discuss why, in general…
We introduce the notion of the projective linking number Link(M,Z) of a compact oriented real submanifold M of dimension 2p-1 in complex projective n-space P^n with an algebraic subvariety Z in P^n - M of codimension p. This notion is related to projective winding numbers and quasi-plurisubharmonic functions, and it generalizes directly from P^n to any projective manifold. Part 1 of this paper establishes the following result for the case p=1. Let M be an oriented, stable, real analytic curve in P^n. Then M is the boundary of a positive holomorphic 1-chain T with Mass(T) < K in P^n if and only…
In this paper, we develop the theory of singular hermitian metrics on vector bundles. As an application, we give a structure theorem of a projective manifold $X$ with pseudo-effective tangent bundle: $X$ admits a smooth fibration $X \to Y$ to a flat projective manifold $Y$ such that its general fiber is rationally connected. Moreover, by applying this structure theorem, we classify all the minimal surfaces with pseudo-effective tangent bundle and study general non-minimal surfaces, which provide examples of (possibly singular) positively curved tangent bundles.
Let $(M,ω)$ be a compact Kähler manifold with negative holomorphic sectional curvature. It was proved by Wu-Yau and Tosatti-Yang that $M$ is necessarily projective and has ample canonical bundle. In this paper, we show that any irreducible subvariety of $M$ is of general type. Moreover, we can extend the theorem to the quasi-negative curvature case building on earlier results of Diverio-Trapani. Finally, we investigate the more general setting of a quasi-projective manifold $X^{\circ}$ endowed with a Kähler metric with negative holomorphic sectional curvature and we prove that such a manifold …
We prove that every projective special Kähler manifold with \emph{regular boundary behaviour} is complete and defines a family of complete quaternionic Kähler manifolds depending on a parameter $c\ge 0$. We also show that, irrespective of its boundary behaviour, every complete projective special Kähler manifold with \emph{cubic prepotential} gives rise to such a family. Examples include non-trivial deformations of non-compact symmetric quaternionic Kähler manifolds.
We determine all complete projective special real surfaces. By the supergravity r-map, they give rise to complete projective special Kähler manifolds of dimension 6, which are distinguished by the image of their scalar curvature function. By the supergravity c-map, the latter manifolds define in turn complete quaternionic Kähler manifolds of dimension 16.
In Part I of this paper we introduced the notion of the projective linking number Link(M,Z) of a compact oriented real submanifold M of dimension 2p-1 in complex projective n-space P^n with an algebraic subvariety Z of codimension p in P^n - M. It is shown here that a basic conjecture concerning the projective hull of real curves in P^2 implies the following result: M is the boundary of a positive holomorphic p-chain T of mass M(T) < K in P^n if and only if Link(M,Z) > -K p!deg(Z) for all algebraic subvarieties Z of codimension p in P^n - M. An analogous result is implied in any projective man…
