Grafting is a surgery on Riemann surfaces introduced by Thurston which connects hyperbolic geometry and the theory of projective structures on surfaces. We will discuss the space of projective structures in terms of the Thurston's geometric parametrization given by grafting. From this approach we will prove that on any compact Riemann surface with genus greater than $1$ there exist infinitely many projective structures with Fuchsian holonomy representations. In course of the proof it will turn out that grafting is closely related to harmonic maps between surfaces.
Let $S$ be a closed oriented surface of genus at least two. Gallo, Kapovich, and Marden asked if 2π-graftings produce all projective structures on $S$ with arbitrarily fixed holonomy (Grafting Conjecture). In this paper, we show that the conjecture holds true "locally" in the space $GL$ of geodesic laminations on $S$ via a natural projection of projective structures on $S$ into $GL$ in the Thurston coordinates. In the sequel paper, using this local solution, we prove the conjecture for generic holonomy.
We show that the simultaneous (de)grafting of a complex projective structure with quasi-Fuchsian holonomy along a multicurve can be performed by a simple sequence of one bubbling and one debubbling. As a consequence we obtain that any complex projective structure with quasi-Fuchsian holonomy $ρ:π_1(S)\to$ PSL$_2\mathbb{C}$ can be joined to the corresponding uniformizing structure $σ_ρ$ by a simple sequence of one bubbling and one debubbling, with a stopover in the space of branched complex projective structures.
We show that grafting any fixed hyperbolic surface defines a homeomorphism from the space of measured laminations to Teichmuller space, complementing a result of Scannell-Wolf on grafting by a fixed lamination. This result is used to study the relationship between the complex-analytic and geometric coordinate systems for the space of complex projective ($\CP^1$) structures on a surface. We also study the rays in Teichmuller space associated to the grafting coordinates, obtaining estimates for extremal and hyperbolic length functions and their derivatives along these grafting rays.
Grafting a measured lamination on a hyperbolic surface defines a self-map of Teichmuller space, which is a homeomorphism by a result of Scannell and Wolf. In this paper we study the large-scale behavior of pruning, which is the inverse of grafting. Specifically, for each conformal structure $X \in \T(S)$, pruning $X$ gives a map $\ML(S) \to \T(S)$. We show that this map extends to the Thurston compactification of $\T(S)$, and that its boundary values are the natural antipodal involution relative to $X$ on the space of projective measured laminations. We use this result to study Thurston's graf…
We prove the connectedness and calculate the diameter of the oriented graph of graftings associated to exotic complex projective structures on a compact surface S with a given holonomy representation of Fuchsian type. The oriented graph of graftings is the graph whose vertices are the equivalence classes of marked CP^1-structures on S with a given fixed holonomy, and there is an oriented edge between two structures if the second is obtained from the first by grafting.
Grafting is a method of obtaining new projective structures from a hyperbolic structure, basically by gluing a flat cylinder into a surface along a closed geodesic in the hyperbolic structure, or by limits of that procedure. This induces a map of Teichmuller space to itself. We prove that this map is a homeomorphism by analyzing harmonic maps between pairs of grafted surfaces. As a corollary we obtain bending coordinates for the Bers embedding of Teichmuller space.
This is a survey of the theory of complex projective (CP^1) structures on compact surfaces. After some preliminary discussion and definitions, we concentrate on three main topics: (1) Using the Schwarzian derivative to parameterize the moduli space (2) Thurston's parameterization of the moduli space using grafting (3) Holonomy representations of CP^1 structures We also discuss some results comparing the two parameterizations of the space of projective structures and relating these parameterizations to the holonomy map.
We prove that any hyperbolic end with particles (cone singularities along infinite curves of angles less than $π$) admits a unique foliation by constant Gauss curvature surfaces. Using a form of duality between hyperbolic ends with particles and convex globally hyperbolic maximal (GHM) de Sitter spacetime with particles, it follows that any convex GHM de Sitter spacetime with particles also admits a unique foliation by constant Gauss curvature surfaces. We prove that the grafting map from the product of Teichmüller space with the space of measured laminations to the space of complex projective…
A Schottky group in PSL(2, C) induces an open hyperbolic handlebody and its ideal boundary is a closed orientable surface S whose genus is equal to the rank of the Schottky group. This boundary surface is equipped with a (complex) projective structure and its holonomy representation is an epimorphism from pi_1(S) to the Schottky group. We will show that an arbitrary projective structure with the same holonomy representation is obtained by (2 pi-)grafting the basic structure described above.
Let S be a closed orientable surface of genus at least two, and let C be an arbitrary (complex) projective structure on S. We show that there is a decomposition of S into pairs of pants and cylinders such that the restriction of C to each component has an injective developing map and a discrete and faithful holonomy representation. This decomposition implies that every projective structure can be obtained by the construction of Gallo, Kapovich, and Marden. Along the way, we show that there is an admissible loop on (S, C), along which a grafting can be done.
The spaces of harmonic maps of the projective plane to the four-dimensional sphere are investigated in this paper by means of twistor lifts. It is shown that such spaces are empty in case of even harmonic degree. In case of harmonic degree less than 6 it was shown that such spaces are path-connected and an explicit parameterization of the canonical representatives was found. In addition, the last section summarizes known results for harmonic maps of the two-dimensional sphere to the four-dimensional sphere of harmonic degree less than 6.
We estimate the dimensions of the spaces of holomorphic sections of certain line bundles to give improved lower bounds on the index of complex isotropic harmonic maps to complex projective space from the sphere and torus, and in some cases from higher genus surfaces.
The present article studies the class of Einstein-Hermitian harmonic maps of constant Kaehler angle from the projective line into quadrics. We provide a description of their moduli spaces up to image, and gauge-equivalence using the language of vector bundles and representation theory. It is shown that the dimension of the moduli spaces is independent of the Einstein-Hermitian constant, and rigidity of the associated real standard, and totally real maps is examined. Finally, certain classical results concerning embeddings of two-dimensional spheres into spheres are rephrased and derived in our…
Minimal Submanifolds of The Complex and Quaternionic Projective and Hyperbolic Spaces $\cn P^{2n-1}$, $\hn P^{2n-1}$, $\cn H^{2n-1}$, $\hn H^{2n-1}$ via Harmonic Morphisms
We describe some general constructions on a real smooth projective 4-quadric which provide analogues of the Willmore functional and conformal Gauss map in both Lie sphere and projective differential geometry. Extrema of these functionals are characterized by harmonicity of this Gauss map.
A harmonic map from a Riemannian manifold into a Grassmannian manifold is characterized by a vector bundle, a space of sections of this bundle and a Laplace operator. We apply our main theorem, itself a generalization of a Theorem of Takahashi, to generalize the theory of do Carmo and Wallach and to describe the moduli space of harmonic maps satisfying the gauge and the Einstein-Hermitian conditions from a compact Rieannian manifold into a Grassmannian. As an application, several rigidity results are exihibited. In particular we generalize a rigidity theorem due to Calabi in the case of holomo…
We study the topology of the space of harmonic maps from $S^2$ to \CP 2$. We prove that the subspaces consisting of maps of a fixed degree and energy are path connected. By a result of Guest and Ohnita it follows that the same is true for the space of harmonic maps to $\CP n$ for $n\geq 2$. We show that the components of maps to $\CP 2$ are complex manifolds.
The SL(2)-character variety X of a closed surface M enjoys a natural complex-symplectic structure invariant under the mapping class group G of M. Using the ergodicity of G on the SU(2)-character variety, we deduce that every G-invariant meromorphic function on X is constant. The trace functions of closed curves on M determine regular functions which generate complex Hamiltonian flows. For simple closed curves, these complex Hamiltonian flows arise from holomorphic flows on the representation variety generalizing the Fenchel-Nielsen twist flows on Teichmueller space and the complex quakebend fl…
We compare some natural triangulations of the Teichmüller space of hyperbolic surfaces with geodesic boundary and of some bordifications. We adapt Scannell-Wolf's proof to show that grafting semi-infinite cylinders at the ends of hyperbolic surfaces with fixed boundary lengths is a homeomorphism. This way, we construct a family of triangulations of the Teichmüller space of punctures surfaces that interpolates between Penner-Bowditch-Epstein's (using the spine construction) and Harer-Mumford-Thurston's (using Strebel's differentials). Finally, we show (adapting arguments of Dumas) that on a fix…
We show that Jacobi fields along harmonic maps between suitable spaces preserve conformality, holomorphicity, real isotropy and complex isotropy to first order; this last being one of the key tools in the proof by Lemaire and the author of integrability of Jacobi fields along harmonic maps from the 2-sphere to the complex projective plane.

We compare two relationships between quadratic differentials and measured geodesic laminations on hyperbolic Riemann surfaces (by foliations or complex projective structures). Each yields a homeomorphism $\ML(S) \to Q(X)$ for any conformal structure $X$ on a compact surface $S$. The main result is that these maps are nearly the same, differing by a multiplicative factor of -2 and an error term of lower order than the maps themselves (which we bound explicitly). As an application we show that the Schwarzian derivative of a $\CP^1$ structure with Fuchsian holonomy is close to a $2π$-integral Jen…
This article shows that every non-isotropic harmonic 2-torus in complex projective space factors through a generalised Jacobi variety related to the spectral curve. Each map is composed of a homomorphism into the variety and a rational map off it. The same ideas allow one to construct (pluri)-harmonic maps of finite type from Euclidean space into Grassmannians and the projective unitary groups. Further, some of these maps will be purely algebraic. For maps into complex projective space the algebraic maps of the plane are always doubly periodic i.e. they yield 2-tori. The classification of all …
Classifications of all biharmonic isoparametric hypersurfaces in the unit sphere, and all biharmonic homogeneous real hypersurfaces in the complex or quaternionic projective spaces are shown. Answers in case of bounded geometry to Chen's conjecture or Caddeo, Montaldo and Piu's one on biharmonic maps into a manifold of non positive curvature are given. Gauge field analogue is shown, and the isolation phenomena of bi-Yang-Mills fields are obtained.
In a previous paper, we showed that any Jacobi field along a harmonic map from the 2-sphere to the complex projective plane is integrable (i.e., is tangent to a smooth variation through harmonic maps). In this paper, in contrast, we show that there are (non-full) harmonic maps from the 2-sphere to the 3-sphere and 4-sphere which have non-integrable Jacobi fields. This is particularly surprising in the case of the 3-sphere where the space of harmonic maps of any degree is a smooth manifold, each map having image in a totally geodesic 2-sphere.
We show that any Jacobi field along a harmonic map from the 2-sphere to the complex projective plane is integrable (i.e., is tangent to a smooth variation through harmonic maps). This provides one of the few known answers to this problem of integrability, which was raised in different contexts of geometry and analysis. It implies that the Jacobi fields form the tangent bundle to each component of the manifold of harmonic maps from $S^2$ to ${\bf C}P^2$ thus giving the nullity of any such harmonic map; it also has bearing on the behaviour of weakly harmonic $E$-minimizing maps from a 3-manifold…
Let $L$ be a local system on a smooth quasi projective variety over $\cnum$. We see that $L$ is semisimple if and only if there exists a tame pure imaginary pluri-harmonic metric on $L$. Although it is a rather minor refinement of a result of Jost and Zuo, it is significant for the study of harmonic bundles and pure twistor $D$-modules. As one of the application, we show that the semisimplicity of local systems are preserved by the pull back via a morphism of quasi projective varieties. This paper will be included as an appendix to our previous paper, ``Asymptotic behaviour of tame harmonic bu…
For a surface in the 3-dimensional real projective space, we define a Gauss map, which is a quadric in $\mathbb R^{4}$ and called the first-order Gauss map. It will be shown that the surface is a Demoulin surface if and only if the first-order Gauss map is conformal, and the surface is a projective minimal coincidence surface or a Demoulin surface if and only if the first-order Gauss map is harmonic. Moreover for a Demoulin surface, it will be shown that the first-order Gauss map can be obtained by the natural projection of the Lorentz primitive map into a 6-symmetric space. We also characteri…
We establish the correspondence between tame harmonic bundles and $μ_L$-stable parabolic Higgs bundles with trivial characteristic numbers. We also show the Bogomolov-Gieseker type inequality for $μ_L$-stable parabolic Higgs bundles. Then we show that any local system on a smooth quasi projective variety can be deformed to a variation of polarized Hodge structure. As a consequence, we can conclude that some kind of discrete groups cannot be a split quotient of the fundamental group of a smooth quasi projective variety.
C-projective structures are analogues of projective structures in the complex setting. The maximal dimension of the Lie algebra of c-projective symmetries of a complex connection on an almost complex manifold of C-dimension $n>1$ is classically known to be $2n^2+4n$. We prove that the submaximal dimension is equal to $2n^2-2n+4+2δ_{3,n}$. If the complex connection is minimal (encoded as a normal parabolic geometry), the harmonic curvature of the c-projective structure has three components and we specify the submaximal symmetry dimensions and the corresponding geometric models for each of these…
We characterise the actions, by holomorphic isometries on a Kähler manifold with zero first Betti number, of an abelian Lie group of dim\geq 2, for which the moment map is horizontally weakly conformal (with respect to some Euclidean structure on the Lie algebra of the group). Furthermore, we study the hyper-Kähler moment map $ϕ$ induced by an abelian Lie group T acting by triholomorphic isometries on a hyper-Kähler manifold M, with zero first Betti number, thus obtaining the following: If dim T=1 then $ϕ$ is a harmonic morphism. Moreover, we illustrate this on the tangent bundle of the comple…
In this article, we use the harmonic sequence associated to a weakly conformal harmonic map $f:S\to S^6$ in order to determine explicit examples of linearly full almost complex 2-spheres of $S^6$ with at most two singularities. We prove that the singularity type of these almost complex 2-spheres has an extra symmetry and this allows us to determine the moduli space of such curves with suitably small area. We also characterize projectively equivalent almost complex curves of $S^6$ in terms of $G_2^{\cc}$-equivalence of their directrix curves.
Let $X$ be a smooth projective complex variety with an ample line bundle $L$, and let $D$ be a simple normal crossing divisor. We establish the Kobayashi-Hitchin correspondence between tame harmonic bundles on $X-D$ and $μ_L$-stable parabolic $λ$-flat bundles with trivial characteristic numbers on $(X,D)$. Especially, we obtain the quasiprojective version of the Corlette-Simpson correspondence between flat bundles and Higgs bundles.
We show that the Korevaar-Schoen limit of the sequence of equivariant harmonic maps corresponding to a sequence of irreducible $SL_2({\mathbb C})$ representations of the fundamental group of a compact Riemannian manifold is an equivariant harmonic map to an ${\mathbb R}$-tree which is minimal and whose length function is projectively equivalent to the Morgan-Shalen limit of the sequence of representations. We then examine the implications of the existence of a harmonic map when the action on the tree fixes an end.
I define an algebraic metric and closed 3-form on a subspace $\mathcal{M}$ of the moduli of $G$-bundles on a complex projective curve $C$, and show that the resulting two-dimensional $σ$-model with target $\mathcal{M}$ has a zero-curvature formulation.

Labourie and the author independently showed that a convex real projective structure on an oriented surface of genus at least 2 is equivalent to a conformal structure plus a holomorphic cubic differential U. We analyze the behavior of the real-projective structure as the conformal structure is fixed and the cubic differential is scaled to infinity. In particular, we find the asymptotic eigenvalues of the holonomies around smooth geodesic loops with respect to the flat metric given by the 2/3 power of |U|. If the asymptotic holonomies of all loops could be computed, then that would describe a b…
Carrying further work of T.A. Crawford, we show that each component of the space of harmonic maps from the $2$-sphere to complex projective $2$-space of degree $d$ and energy $4 πE$ is a smooth closed submanifold of the space of all $C^j$ maps $(j \geq 2)$. We achieve this by showing that the Gauss transform which relates them to spaces of holomorphic maps of given degree and ramification index is {\bf smooth} and has {\bf injective differential}.
The paper develops the fundamentals of quaternionic holomorphic curve theory. The holomorphic functions in this theory are conformal maps from a Riemann surface into the 4-sphere, i.e., the quaternionic projective line. Basic results such as the Riemann-Roch Theorem for quaternionic holomorphic vector bundles, the Kodaira embedding and the Pluecker relations for linear systems are proven. Interpretations of these results in terms of the differential geometry of surfaces in 3- and 4-space are hinted at throughout the paper. Applications to estimates of the Willmore functional on constant mean c…
This is the sixth in a series of papers constructing examples of special Lagrangian m-folds in C^m. We present a construction of special Lagrangian cones in C^3 involving two commuting o.d.e.s, motivated by the first two papers of the series. Then we generalize it to a construction of non-conical special Lagrangian 3-folds in C^3 involving three commuting o.d.e.s. Now special Lagrangian cones in C^3 are linked to the theory of harmonic maps and integrable systems. Harmonic maps from a Riemann surface into complex projective space CP^n are an integrable system, and can be studied and classified…
In the present paper we use twistor theory in order to solve two problems related to harmonic maps from surfaces to Euclidean spheres $\mathbb{S}^n$. First, we propose a new approach to isoperimetric inequalities based on energy index. Using this approach we show that for any positive $k$, the $k$-th non-zero eigenvalue of the Laplacian on the real projective plane endowed with a metric of unit area, is maximized on the sequence of metrics converging to a union of $(k-1)$ identical copies of round sphere and a single round projective plane. This extends the results of P. Li and S.-T. Yau for $…
Let $V$ be a complex projective variety with isolated singularities. Let the smooth part be given the metric induced by a projective imbedding. Then we develop the $L_2$ harmonic theory and construct a pure Hodge structure on the $L_2$-cohomology of $V$. If the dimension of $V$ is two, we put a cohomological Hodge structure on its complex of sheaves of $L_2$ forms.
David Hilbert discovered in 1895 an important metric that is canonically associated to any convex domain $Ω$ in the Euclidean (or projective) space. This metric is known to be Finslerian, and the usual proof assumes a certain degree of smoothness of the boundary of $Ω$ and refers to a theorem by Busemann and Mayer that produces the norm of a tangent vector from the distance function. In this paper, we develop a new approach for the study of the Hilbert metric where no differentiability is assumed. The approach exhibits the Hilbert metric on a domain as a symmetrization of a natural weak metric…
Using nonlinear pde techniques, we construct a new family of globally smooth tt* structures. This includes tt* structures associated to the (orbifold) quantum cohomology of a finite number of complex projective spaces and weighted projective spaces. The existence of such "magical solutions" of the tt* equations, namely smooth solutions characterized by asymptotic boundary conditions, was predicted by Cecotti and Vafa. In our situation, the tt* equations belong to a class of equations which we call the tt*-Toda lattice. Solutions of the tt*-Toda lattice are harmonic maps which have dual interpr…
Properties of the Cauchy-Riemann-Fueter equation for maps between quaternionic manifolds are studied. Spaces of solutions in case of maps from a K3-surface to the cotangent bundle of a complex projective space are computed. A relationship between harmonic spinors of a generalized nonlinear Dirac operator and solutions of the Cauchy-Riemann-Fueter equation are established.
