We show that the hyperbolization of polyhedra pulls back regular neighborhoods of PL submanifolds. Applying this to the Riemannian version of the hyperbolization due to Ontaneda gives open complete manifolds of pinched negative curvature that are homotopy equivalent to closed smooth manifolds but contain no smooth spines. We also find open complete negatively pinched manifolds that are homotopy equivalent to closed non-smoothable manifolds.

Existence of regular neighborhoods for H-surfaces

In this paper, we study the global geometry of complete, constant mean curvature hypersurfaces embedded in n-manifolds. More precisely, we give conditions that imply properness of such surfaces and prove the existence of fixed size one-sided regular neighborhoods for certain constant mean curvature hypersurfaces in certain n-manifolds.

Foliated and compactly supported isotopies of regular neighborhoods

Regular points of extremal subsets in Alexandrov spaces

We define regular points of an extremal subset in an Alexandrov space and study their basic properties. We show that a neighborhood of a regular point in an extremal subset is almost isometric to an open subset in Euclidean space and that the set of regular points in an extremal subset has full measure and is dense in it. Harmonic sections in sphere bundles, normal neighborhoods of reduction loci, and instanton moduli spaces on definite 4-manifolds

We prove an existence theorem for gauge invariant $L^2$-normal neighborhoods of the reduction loci in the space ${\cal A}_a(E)$ of oriented connections on a fixed Hermitian 2-bundle $E$. Minimizing curves in prox-regular subsets of Riemannian manifolds

We obtain a characterization of the proximal normal cone to a prox-regular subset of a Riemannian manifold. Moreover, some properties of Bouligand tangent cones to prox-regular sets are described. We prove that for a prox-regular subset S of a Riemannian manifold, the metric projection P_S to S is locally Lipschitz on an open neighborhood of S and it is directionally differentiable at boundary points of S. Finally, a necessary condition for a curve to be a minimizing curve in a prox-regular set is derived.

Complexifications of infinite-dimensional manifolds and new constructions of infinite-dimensional Lie groups

Let M be a real analytic manifold modeled on a locally convex space and K be a non-empty compact subset of M. The exponential map of a $C^{1,1}$-metric

Given a pseudo-Riemannian metric of regularity $C^{1,1}$ on a smooth manifold, we prove that the corresponding exponential map is a bi-Lipschitz homeomorphism locally around any point. We also establish the existence of totally normal neighborhoods in an appropriate sense. The proofs are based on regularization, combined with methods from comparison geometry.
