We give four positive formulae for the (equioriented type A) quiver polynomials of Buch and Fulton. All four formulae are combinatorial, in the sense that they are expressed in terms of combinatorial objects of certain types: Zelevinsky permutations, lacing diagrams, Young tableaux, and pipe dreams (also known as rc-graphs). Three of our formulae are multiplicity-free and geometric, meaning that their summands have coefficient 1, and correspond bijectively to components of a torus-invariant scheme. The remaining (presently non-geometric) formula was conjectured for by Buch and Fulton in terms of factor sequences of Young tableaux; our proof of it proceeds by way of a new characterization of the tableaux counted by quiver constants. All four formulae come naturally in ``doubled'' versions, two for `double quiver polynomials', and the other two for their stable versions, the `double quiver functions', where setting half the variables equal to the other half specializes to the ordinary case.
Kempf [1976] studied proper, G-equivariant maps from equivariant vector bundles over flag manifolds to G-representations V, which he called _collapsings_. We give a simple formula for the G-equivariant cohomology class on V, or_multidegree_, associated to the image of a collapsing: apply a certain sequence of divided difference operators to a certain product of linear polynomials, then divide by the number of components in a general fiber. When that number of components is 1, we construct a desingularization of the image of the collapsing. If in addition the image has rational singularities, w…
We provide combinatorial formulas for the multidegree and K-polynomial of an arbitrarily oriented type A quiver locus. These formulas are generalizations of three of Knutson-Miller-Shimozono's formulas from the equioriented setting; in particular, we prove the K-theoretic component formula conjectured by Buch and Rimányi.
In previous work we have shown that the equivariant index of multi-centered N=2 black holes localizes on collinear configurations along a fixed axis. Here we provide a general algorithm for enumerating such collinear configurations and computing their contribution to the index. We apply this machinery to the case of black holes described by quiver quantum mechanics, and give a systematic prescription -- the Coulomb branch formula -- for computing the cohomology of the moduli space of quiver representations. For quivers without oriented loops, the Coulomb branch formula is shown to agree with t…
The main theorem here is the K-theoretic analogue of the cohomological `stable double component formula' for quiver functions in [Knutson, Miller, and Shimozono, math.AG/0308142]. This K-theoretic version is still in terms of lacing diagrams, but nonminimal diagrams contribute terms of higher degree. The motivating consequence is a conjecture of A. Buch on the sign-alternation of the coefficients appearing in his expansion of quiver K-polynomials in terms of stable Grothendieck polynomials for partitions [Buch, math.AG/0104029].
$F$-polynomials are integer coefficient polynomials encoding the mutations of cluster variables inside a cluster algebra. In this article, we study the $F$-polynomials associated with the action of Donaldson-Thomas transformations on cluster variables. For acyclic quivers, quivers of surface types, and quivers associated with triples of flags, we give explicit descriptions of their Donaldson-Thomas $F$-polynomials in terms of generating functions for ideals inside a labeled poset. We also describe the combinatorial procedure needed to modify these labeled posets to obtain Donaldson-Thomas $F$-…
The work of Buch and Fulton established a formula for a general kind of degeneracy locus associated to an oriented quiver of type $A$. The main ingredients in this formula are Schur determinants and certain integers, the quiver coefficients, which generalize the classical Littlewood-Richardson coefficients. Our aim in this paper is to prove a positive combinatorial formula for the quiver coefficients when the rank conditions defining the degeneracy locus are given by a permutation. In particular, this gives new expansions for Fulton's universal Schubert polynomials and the Schubert polynomials…
Fulton's universal Schubert polynomials give cohomology formulas for a class of degeneracy loci, which generalize Schubert varieties. The K-theoretic quiver formula of Buch expresses the structure sheaves of these loci as integral linear combinations of products of stable Grothendieck polynomials. We prove an explicit combinatorial formula for the coefficients, which shows that they have alternating signs. Our result is applied to obtain new expansions for the Grothendieck polynomials of Lascoux and Schützenberger.
Degeneracy loci polynomials for quiver representations generalize several important polynomials in algebraic combinatorics. In this paper we give a nonconventional generating sequence description of these polynomials, when the quiver is of Dynkin type.
For a quiver $Q$, we take $\mathcal{M}$ an associated toric Nakajima quiver variety and $Γ$ the underlying graph. In this article, we give a direct relation between a specialisation of the Tutte polynomial of $Γ$, the Kac polynomial of $Q$ and the Poincaré polynomial of $\mathcal{M}$. We do this by giving a cell decomposition of $\mathcal{M}$ indexed by spanning trees of $Γ$ and `geometrising' the deletion and contraction operators on graphs. These relations have been previously established by Sturmfels-Hausel and (Crawley-Boovey)-Van den Bergh, however the methods here are more hands-on.
This article contains an overview of the author's joint work with Allen Knutson and Jenna Rajchgot on $K$-polynomials of orbit closures for type $A$ quivers. It is written to an audience interested in interactions between representations of algebras, algebraic geometry, and commutative algebra. A few open problems resulting from the work are also explained.
The idea is to identify certain path algebra elements with symmetric functions. We propose such a morphism by solving the quiver relations, which describe the Plucker-type embedding for quiver grassmannians.
In our joint paper with W. Fulton (math.AG/9804041) we prove a formula for the cohomology class of a quiver variety. This formula is general enough to give new expressions for all known types of Schubert polynomials. In the present paper we discuss the relationship between this formula and Stanley symmetric functions. We show that the coefficients obtained when a Stanley symmetric function is expressed in the basis of Schur functions are special cases of a class of generalized Littlewood-Richardson coefficients appearing in the formula for quiver varieties. We also prove that Fulton's universa…
Buch and Fulton conjectured the nonnegativity of the quiver coefficients appearing in their formula for a quiver variety. Knutson, Miller and Shimozono proved this conjecture as an immediate consequence of their ``component formula''. We present an alternative proof of the component formula by substituting combinatorics for Grobner degeneration. We relate the component formula to the work of Buch, Kresch, Tamvakis and the author where a ``splitting'' formula for Schubert polynomials in terms of quiver coefficients was obtained. We prove analogues of this latter result for the type BCD-Schubert…
We give a cohomological interpretation of both the Kac polynomial and the refined Donaldson-Thomas- invariants of quivers. This interpretation yields a proof of a conjecture of Kac from 1982 and gives a new perspective on recent work of Kontsevich-Soibelman. This is achieved by computing, via an arithmetic Fourier transform, the dimensions of the isoytpical components of the cohomology of associated Nakajima quiver varieties under the action of a Weyl group. The generating function of the corresponding Poincaré polynomials is an extension of Hua's formula for Kac polynomials of quivers involvi…
In this paper we prove that the counting polynomials of certain torus orbits in products of partial flag varieties coincides with the Kac polynomials of supernova quivers, which arise in the study of the moduli spaces of certain irregular meromorphic connections on trivial bundles over the projective line. We also prove that these polynomials can be expressed as a specialization of Tutte polynomials of certain graphs providing a combinatorial proof of the non-negativity of their coefficients.
Let r be an orbit of the quiver representation of type A_n (equioriented case). In this paper we study the Poincare dual of the closure of r (a.c.a. Thom polynomial/degeneracy loci formula) in equivariant cohomology. Using general Thom polynomial theory we prove the component formula and its stable version of [Knutson-Miller-Shimozono] as well as the positivity of the quiver coefficients of [Buch-Fulton]. We also show how the component formula follows from Grobner degeneration easily. In relation with the K-theory counterpart of the formula we give a new description of KMS factorizations based…
Caldero and Zelevinsky studied the geometry of quiver Grassmannians for the Kronecker quiver and computed their Euler characteristics by examining natural stratification of quiver Grassmannians. We consider generalized Kronecker quivers and compute virtual Poincare polynomials of certain varieties which are the images under projections from strata of quiver Grassmannians to ordinary Grassmannians. In contrast to the Kronecker quiver case, these polynomials do not necessarily have positive coefficients. The key ingredient is the explicit formula for noncommutative cluster variables given by Ral…
A survey of the theory of Kac polynomials for quivers and for curves. In particular, we describe the representation-theoretic meaning of Kac polynomials in terms of Hall algebras, and the geometric meaning of Kac polynomials in relation to the geometry of moduli spaces of representations of quivers or vector bundles on smooth projective curves. We end with some heuristics concerning a family of infinite-dimensional $\mathbb{Z}^2$-graded Lie algebras attached to curves of a fixed genus (over a finite field), whose 'Cartan datum' encodes the dimension of the spaces of absolutely cuspidal functio…
Extending the main result of Part 1, in the first part of this paper we show that every quiver Grassmannian of a representation of a quiver of extended Dynkin type $D$ has a decomposition into affine spaces. In the case of real root representations of small defect, the non-empty cells are in one-to-one correspondence to certain, so called non-contradictory, subsets of the vertex set of a fixed tree-shaped coefficient quiver. In the second part, we use this characterization to determine the generating functions of the Euler characteristics of the quiver Grassmannians (resp. $F$-polynomials). Al…
It is shown that rational points over finite fields of moduli spaces of stable quiver representations are counted by polynomials with integer coefficients. These polynomials are constructed recursively using an identity in the Hall algebra of a quiver.
We study relations between cluster algebra invariants and link invariants. First, we show that several constructions of positroid links (permutation links, Richardson links, grid diagram links, plabic graph links) give rise to isotopic links. For a subclass of permutations arising from concave curves, we also provide isotopies with the corresponding Coxeter links. Second, we associate a point count polynomial to an arbitrary locally acyclic quiver. We conjecture an equality between the top $a$-degree coefficient of the HOMFLY polynomial of a plabic graph link and the point count polynomial of …
Let $Q$ be a quiver of extended Dynkin type $D$. In this first of two papers, we show that the quiver Grassmannian $Gr_e(M)$ has a decomposition into affine spaces for every dimension vector $e$ and every indecomposable representation $M$ of defect $-1$ and defect $0$, with exception of the non-Schurian representations in homogeneous tubes. We characterize the affine spaces in terms of the combinatorics of a fixed coefficient quiver for $M$. The method of proof is to exhibit explicit equations for the Schubert cells of $Gr_e(M)$ and to solve this system of equations successively in linear term…
Consider the Cohomological Hall Algebra as defined by Kontsevich and Soibelman, associated with a Dynkin quiver. We reinterpret the geometry behind the multiplication map in the COHA, and give an iterated residue formula for it. We show natural subalgebras whose product is the whole COHA (except in the $E_8$ case). The dimension count version of this statement is an identity for quantum dilogarithm series, first proved by Reineke. We also show that natural structure constants of the COHA are universal polynomials representing degeneracy loci, a.k.a. quiver polynomials.
We establish a formula for the value of the Kac polynomial at one in terms of Kac polynomials, evaluated at one, of the universal (abelian) covering quiver by applying torus localization methods to quiver varieties introduced by Hausel--Letellier--Rodriguez-Villegas.
We prove that the weight multiplicities of the integrable irreducible highest weight module over the Kac-Moody algebra associated to a quiver are equal to the root multiplicities of the Kac-Moody algebra associated to some enlarged quiver. To do this, we use the Kac conjecture for indivisible roots and a relation between the Poincare polynomials of quiver varieties and the Kac polynomials, counting the number of absolutely irreducible representations of the quiver over finite fields. As a corollary of this relation, we get an explicit formula for the Poincare polynomials of quiver varieties, w…
We present a conjecture generalizing the Cauchy formula for Macdonald polynomials. This conjecture encodes the mixed Hodge polynomials of the character varieties of representations of the fundamental group of a Riemann surface of genus g to GL_n(C) with fixed generic semi-simple conjugacy classes at k punctures. Using the character table of GL_n(F_q) we calculate the E-polynomial of these character varieties and confirm that it is as predicted by our main conjecture. Then, using the character table of gl_n(F_q), we calculate the E-polynomial of certain associated comet-shaped quiver varieties,…
In arXiv:0810.2076 we presented a conjecture generalizing the Cauchy formula for Macdonald polynomials. This conjecture encodes the mixed Hodge polynomials of the representation varieties of Riemann surfaces with semi-simple conjugacy classes at the punctures. We proved several results which support this conjecture. Here we announce new results which are consequences of those of arXiv:0810.2076.
This paper introduces a mathematical definition of the category of D-branes in Landau-Ginzburg orbifolds in terms of $A_\infty$-categories. Our categories coincide with the categories of (graded) matrix factorizations for quasi-homogeneous polynomials. After setting up the necessary definitions, we prove that our category for the polynomial $x^{n+1}$ is equivalent to the derived category of representations of the Dynkin quiver of type $A_{n}$. We also construct a special stability condition for the triangulated category in the sense of T. Bridgeland, which should be the "origin" of the space o…
We give a closed expression for the number of points over finite fields (or the motive) of the Lusztig nilpotent variety associated to any quiver, in terms of Kac's A-polynomials. When the quiver has 1-loops or oriented cycles, there are several possible variants of the Lusztig nilpotent variety, and we provide formulas for the point count of each. This involves nilpotent versions of the Kac A-polynomial, which we introduce and for which we give a closed formula similar to Hua's formula for the usual Kac A-polynomial. Finally we compute the number of points over a finite field of the various s…
We prove a new formula for the generating function of polynomials counting absolutely stable representations of quivers over finite fields. The case of irreducible representations is studied in more detail.
In this paper a formula is proved for the general degeneracy locus associated to an oriented quiver of type A_n. Given a finite sequence of vector bundles with maps between them, these loci are described by putting rank conditions on arbitrary composites of the maps. Our answer is a polynomial in Chern classes of the bundles involved, depending on the given rank conditions. It can be expressed as a linear combination of products of Schur polynomials in the differences of the bundles. The coefficients are interesting generalizations of Littlewood-Richardson numbers. These polynomials specialize…
Quiver Grassmannians are varieties parametrizing subrepresentations of a quiver representation. It is observed that certain quiver Grassmannians for type A quivers are isomorphic to the degenerate flag varieties investigated earlier by the second named author. This leads to the consideration of a class of Grassmannians of subrepresentations of the direct sum of a projective and an injective representation of a Dynkin quiver. It is proven that these are (typically singular) irreducible normal local complete intersection varieties, which admit a group action with finitely many orbits, and a cell…
Let us consider a specialization of an untwisted quantum affine algebra of type $ADE$ at a nonzero complex number, which may or may not be a root of unity. The Grothendieck ring of its finite dimensional representations has two bases, simple modules and standard modules. We identify entries of the transition matrix with special values of ``computable'' polynomials, similar to Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials. At the same time we ``compute'' $q$-characters for all simple modules. The result is based on ``computations'' of Betti numbers of graded/cyclic quiver varieties. (The reason why we put `` '' …
In this paper, the singular Ringel-Hall algebra for a tame quiver is introduced and shown to be isomorphic to the positive part of the quantum extended Kac-Moody algebra. A PBW basis is constructed and a new class of perverse sheaves is shown to have purity property. This allows to construct the canonical bases of the positive part of the quantum extended Kac-Moody algebra. As an application, the existence of Hall polynomials for tame quiver algebras is proved.
We prove a positive combinatorial formula for the equivariant class of an orbit closure in the space of representations of an arbitrary quiver of type $A$. Our formula expresses this class as a sum of products of Schubert polynomials indexed by a generalization of the minimal lace diagrams of Knutson, Miller, and Shimozono. The proof is based on the interpolation method of Fehér and Rimányi. We also conjecture a more general formula for the equivariant Grothendieck class of an orbit closure.
We study a triangulated category of graded matrix factorizations for a polynomial of type ADE. We show that it is equivalent to the derived category of finitely generated modules over the path algebra of the corresponding Dynkin quiver. Also, we discuss a special stability condition for the triangulated category in the sense of T. Bridgeland, which is naturally defined by the grading.
