The work of Buch and Fulton established a formula for a general kind of degeneracy locus associated to an oriented quiver of type $A$. The main ingredients in this formula are Schur determinants and certain integers, the quiver coefficients, which generalize the classical Littlewood-Richardson coefficients. Our aim in this paper is to prove a positive combinatorial formula for the quiver coefficients when the rank conditions defining the degeneracy locus are given by a permutation. In particular, this gives new expansions for Fulton's universal Schubert polynomials and the Schubert polynomials of Lascoux and Schützenberger.
We give an explicit natural identification between the quiver coefficients of Buch and Fulton, decomposition coefficients for Schubert polynomials, and the Schubert structure constants for flag manifolds. This is also achieved in K-theory where we give a direct argument that the decomposition coefficients have alternating signs, based on a theorem of Brion, which then implies that the quiver coefficients have alternating signs. Our identification shows that known combinatorial formulas for the latter two numbers give formulas for the quiver coefficients.
We describe a closed immersion from each representation space of a type A quiver with bipartite (i.e., alternating) orientation to a certain opposite Schubert cell of a partial flag variety. This "bipartite Zelevinsky map" restricts to an isomorphism from each orbit closure to a Schubert variety intersected with the above-mentioned opposite Schubert cell. For type A quivers of arbitrary orientation, we give the same result up to some factors of general linear groups. These identifications allow us to recover results of Bobinski and Zwara; namely we see that orbit closures of type A quivers are…
Quiver Grassmannians are projective varieties parametrizing subrepresentations of given dimension in a quiver representation. We define a class of quiver Grassmannians generalizing those which realize degenerate flag varieties. We show that each irreducible component of the quiver Grassmannians in question is isomorphic to a Schubert variety. We give an explicit description of the set of irreducible components, identify all the Schubert varieties arising, and compute the Poincaré polynomials of these quiver Grassmannians.
In our joint paper with W. Fulton (math.AG/9804041) we prove a formula for the cohomology class of a quiver variety. This formula is general enough to give new expressions for all known types of Schubert polynomials. In the present paper we discuss the relationship between this formula and Stanley symmetric functions. We show that the coefficients obtained when a Stanley symmetric function is expressed in the basis of Schur functions are special cases of a class of generalized Littlewood-Richardson coefficients appearing in the formula for quiver varieties. We also prove that Fulton's universa…
In this paper, we introduce Schubert decompositions for quiver Grassmannians and investigate example classes of quiver Grassmannians with a Schubert decomposition into affine spaces. The main theorem puts the cells of a Schubert decomposition into relation to the cells of a certain simpler quiver Grassmannian. This allows us to extend known examples of Schubert decompositions into affine spaces to a larger class of quiver Grassmannians. This includes exceptional representations of the Kronecker quiver as well as representations of forests with block matrices of the form $\begin{pmatrix} 0&1\\ …
Buch and Fulton conjectured the nonnegativity of the quiver coefficients appearing in their formula for a quiver variety. Knutson, Miller and Shimozono proved this conjecture as an immediate consequence of their ``component formula''. We present an alternative proof of the component formula by substituting combinatorics for Grobner degeneration. We relate the component formula to the work of Buch, Kresch, Tamvakis and the author where a ``splitting'' formula for Schubert polynomials in terms of quiver coefficients was obtained. We prove analogues of this latter result for the type BCD-Schubert…
Fulton's universal Schubert polynomials give cohomology formulas for a class of degeneracy loci, which generalize Schubert varieties. The K-theoretic quiver formula of Buch expresses the structure sheaves of these loci as integral linear combinations of products of stable Grothendieck polynomials. We prove an explicit combinatorial formula for the coefficients, which shows that they have alternating signs. Our result is applied to obtain new expansions for the Grothendieck polynomials of Lascoux and Schützenberger.
Let $Q$ be a quiver, $M$ a representation of $Q$ with an ordered basis $\cB$ and $\ue$ a dimension vector for $Q$. In this note we extend the methods of \cite{L12} to establish Schubert decompositions of quiver Grassmannians $\Gr_\ue(M)$ into affine spaces to the ramified case, i.e.\ the canonical morphism $F:T\to Q$ from the coefficient quiver $T$ of $M$ w.r.t.\ $\cB$ is not necessarily unramified. In particular, we determine the Euler characteristic of $\Gr_\ue(M)$ as the number of \emph{extremal successor closed subsets of $T_0$}, which extends the results of Cerulli Irelli (\cite{Cerulli11…
Let $Q$ be a quiver of extended Dynkin type $D$. In this first of two papers, we show that the quiver Grassmannian $Gr_e(M)$ has a decomposition into affine spaces for every dimension vector $e$ and every indecomposable representation $M$ of defect $-1$ and defect $0$, with exception of the non-Schurian representations in homogeneous tubes. We characterize the affine spaces in terms of the combinatorics of a fixed coefficient quiver for $M$. The method of proof is to exhibit explicit equations for the Schubert cells of $Gr_e(M)$ and to solve this system of equations successively in linear term…
Extending the main result of Part 1, in the first part of this paper we show that every quiver Grassmannian of a representation of a quiver of extended Dynkin type $D$ has a decomposition into affine spaces. In the case of real root representations of small defect, the non-empty cells are in one-to-one correspondence to certain, so called non-contradictory, subsets of the vertex set of a fixed tree-shaped coefficient quiver. In the second part, we use this characterization to determine the generating functions of the Euler characteristics of the quiver Grassmannians (resp. $F$-polynomials). Al…
It is well-known that the intersection multiplicities of Schubert classes in the Grassmanian are Littlewood-Richardson coefficients. We generalize this statement in the context of quiver representations. Here the intersection multiplicity of Schubert classes is replaced by the number of subrepresentations of a general quiver reprsentation, and the Littlewood-Richardson coefficients are replaced by the the dimension of a certain space of semiinvariants.
A result of Zelevinsky states that an orbit closure in the space of representations of the equioriented quiver of type $A_h$ is in bijection with the opposite cell in a Schubert variety of a partial flag variety $SL(n)/Q$. We prove that Zelevinsky's bijection is a scheme-theoretic isomorphism, which shows that the universal degeneracy schemes of Fulton are reduced and Cohen-Macaulay in arbitrary characteristic.
We prove Newton's binomial formulas for Schubert Calculus to determine numbers of base point free linear series on the projective line with prescribed ramification divisor supported at given distinct points.
We develop Pieri type as well as Murnaghan--Nakayama type formulas for equivariant Chern--Schwartz--MacPherson classes of Schubert cells in the classical flag variety. These formulas include as special cases many previously known multiplication formulas for Chern--Schwartz--MacPherson classes or Schubert classes. We apply the equivariant Murnaghan--Nakayama formula to the enumeration of rim hook tableaux.
The purpose of this note is to give a refinement of the product formula proved in [1] for the Poincare polynomial of a smooth Schubert variety in the flag variety of an algebraic group G over C. This yields a factorization of the number of elements in a Bruhat interval [e,w] in the Weyl group W of G provided the Schubert variety associated to w is smooth. This gives an elementary necessary condition for a Schubert variety in the flag variety to be smooth.
We give a new proof that three families of polynomials coincide: the double Schubert polynomials of Lascoux and Schützenberger defined by divided difference operators, the pipe dream polynomials of Bergeron and Billey, and the equivariant cohomology classes of matrix Schubert varieties. All three families are shown to satisfy a "co-transition formula" which we explain to be some extent projectively dual to Lascoux' transition formula. We comment on the K-theoretic extensions.
Ikeda-Mihalcea-Naruse's double Schubert polynomials represent the equivariant cohomology classes of Schubert varieties in the type C flag varieties. The goal of this paper is to obtain a new tableau formula of these polynomials associated to vexillary signed permutations introduced by Anderson-Fulton. To achieve that goal, we introduce flagged factorial (Schur) $Q$-functions, combinatorially defined in terms of (flagged) marked shifted tableaux for flagged strict partitions, and prove their Schur-Pfaffian formula. As an application, we also obtain a new combinatorial formula of factorial $Q$-f…
We describe the torus-equivariant cohomology ring of isotropic Grassmannians by using a localization map to the torus fixed points. We present two types of formulas for equivariant Schubert classes of these homogeneous spaces. The first formula involves combinatorial objects which we call ``excited Young diagrams'' and the second one is written in terms of factorial Schur $Q$- or $P$-functions. As an application, we give a Giambelli-type formula for the equivariant Schubert classes. We also give combinatorial and Pfaffian formulas for the multiplicity of a singular point in a Schubert variety.
We prove a positive combinatorial formula for the equivariant class of an orbit closure in the space of representations of an arbitrary quiver of type $A$. Our formula expresses this class as a sum of products of Schubert polynomials indexed by a generalization of the minimal lace diagrams of Knutson, Miller, and Shimozono. The proof is based on the interpolation method of Fehér and Rimányi. We also conjecture a more general formula for the equivariant Grothendieck class of an orbit closure.
Define a ``truncation'' $r_{t}(p)$ of a polynomial $p$ in $\{x_1,x_2,x_3,...\}$ as the polynomial with all but the first $t$ variables set to zero. In certain good cases, the truncation of a Schubert or Grothendieck polynomial may again be a Schubert or Grothendieck polynomial. We use this phenomenon to give subtraction-free formulae for certain Schubert structure constants in $K(Flags({\mathbb C}^n))$, in particular generalizing those from [Kogan '00] in which only cohomology was treated, and from [Buch `02] on the Grassmannian case. The terms of the answer are computed using ``marching'' ope…
In our previous work arXiv:1305.3543, we employed the approach to Schubert polynomials by Fomin, Stanley, and Kirillov to obtain simple, uniform proofs that the double Schubert polynomials of Lascoux and Schutzenberger and Ikeda, Mihalcea, and Naruse represent degeneracy loci for the classical groups in the sense of Fulton. Using this as our starting point, and purely combinatorial methods, we obtain a new proof of the general formulas of arXiv:0908.3628, which represent the degeneracy loci coming from any isotropic partial flag variety. Along the way, we also find several new formulas and elu…
Enriched versions of type A Schubert polynomials are constructed with coefficients in a polynomial ring in variables $c_1, c_2, \ldots$. Specializing these variables to $0$ recovers the double Schubert polynomials of Lascoux and Schützenberger; specializing them to certain power series recovers the back-stable double Schubert polynomials of Lam, Lee, and Shimozono; specializing them to Schur Q-polynomials relates them to the type C double Schubert polynomials of Ikeda, Mihalcea, and Naruse. Many formulas for classical Schubert polynomials generalize to this setting. They give, and are characte…
A formula for the structure constants of the multiplication of Schubert classes is obtained in arXiv:1909.05283. In this note, we prove analogous formulae for the Chern--Schwartz--MacPherson (CSM) classes and Segre--Schwartz--MacPherson (SSM) classes of Schubert cells in the flag variety. By the equivalence between the CSM classes and the stable basis elements for the cotangent bundle of the flag variety, a formula for the structure constants for the latter is also deduced.
We give positive formulas for the restriction of a Schubert Class to a T-fixed point in the equivariant K-theory and equivariant cohomology of the Lagrangian Grassmannian. Our formulas rely on a result of Ghorpade-Raghavan, which gives an equivariant Grobner degeneration of a Schubert variety in the neighborhood of a T-fixed point of the Lagrangian Grassmannian.
Kohnert proposed the first monomial positive formula for Schubert polynomials as the generating polynomial for certain unit cell diagrams obtained from the Rothe diagram of a permutation. Billey, Jockusch and Stanley gave the first proven formula for Schubert polynomials as the generating polynomial for compatible sequences of reduced words of a permutation. In this paper, we give an explicit bijection between these two models, thereby definitively proving Kohnert's rule for Schubert polynomials.
A previous result of the authors with Chaput and Perrin states that the union of all rational curves of fixed degree passing through a Schubert variety in a homogeneous space G/P is again a Schubert variety. In this paper we identify this Schubert variety explicitly in terms of the Hecke product of Weyl group elements. We apply our result to give an explicit formula for any two-point Gromov-Witten invariant as well as a new proof of the quantum Chevalley formula and its equivariant generalization. We also recover a formula for the minimal degree of a rational curve between two given points in …
We continue the study of root-theoretic Young diagrams (RYDs) from [Searles-Yong '13]. We provide an RYD formula for the $GL_n$ Belkale-Kumar product, after [Knutson-Purbhoo '11], and we give a translation of the indexing set of [Buch-Kresch-Tamvakis '09] for Schubert varieties of non-maximal isotropic Grassmannians into RYDs. We then use this translation to prove that the RYD formulas of [Searles-Yong '13] for Schubert calculus of the classical (co)adjoint varieties agree with the Pieri rules of [Buch-Kresch-Tamvakis '09], which were needed in the proofs of the (co)adjoint formulas.
We give positive formulas for the restriction of a Schubert Class to a T-fixed point in the equivariant K-theory and equivariant cohomology of the Grassmannian. Our formulas rely on a result of Kodiyalam-Raghavan and Kreiman-Lakshmibai, which gives an equivariant Grobner degeneration of a Schubert variety in the neighborhood of a T-fixed point of the Grassmannian.
We prove, combinatorially, that the product of a Schubert polynomial by a Stanley symmetric polynomial is a truncated Schubert polynomial. Using Monk's rule, we derive a nonnegative combinatorial formula for the Schubert polynomial expansion of a truncated Schubert polynomial. Combining these results, we give a nonnegative combinatorial rule for the product of a Schubert and a Schur polynomial in the Schubert basis.
Schubert polynomials were introduced in the context of the geometry of flag varieties. This paper investigates some of the connections not yet understood between several combinatorial structures for the construction of Schubert polynomials; we also present simplifications in some of the existing approaches to this area. We designate certain line diagrams known as rc-graphs as the main structure. The other structures in the literature we study include: semistandard Young tableaux, Kohnert diagrams, and balanced labelings of the diagram of a permutation. The main tools in our investigation are c…
We give combinatorial descriptions of the restrictions to T-fixed points of the classes of structure sheaves of Schubert varieties in the T-equivariant K-theory of Grassmannians and of maximal isotropic Grassmannians of orthogonal and symplectic types. We also give formulas, based on these descriptions, for the Hilbert series and Hilbert polynomials at T-fixed points of the corresponding Schubert varieties. These descriptions and formulas are given in terms of two equivalent combinatorial models: excited Young diagrams and set-valued tableaux. The restriction fomulas are positive, in that for …
Peterson varieties are special nilpotent Hessenberg varieties that have appeared in the study of quantum cohomology, representation theory, and combinatorics. In type $A$, the Peterson variety $Y$ is a subvariety of the complete flag variety $Fl(n; \mathbb C)$, and is invariant under the action of a subgroup $S\cong \mathbb C^*$ of $T$, where $T$ is the standard (noncompact) torus acting on $Fl(n; \mathbb C)$. Using the Peterson Schubert basis introduced by Harada and Tymoczko obtained by restricting a specific set of Schubert classes from $H_T^*(Fl(n; \mathbb C))$ to $H_S^*(Y)$, we describe t…
We prove that twisted versions of Schubert polynomials defined by $\widetilde{\mathfrak S}_{w_0} = x_1^{n-1}x_2^{n-2} \cdots x_{n-1}$ and $\widetilde{\mathfrak S}_{ws_i} = (s_i+\partial_i)\widetilde{\mathfrak S}_w$ are monomial positive and give a combinatorial formula for their coefficients. In doing so, we reprove and extend a previous result about positivity of skew divided difference operators and show how it implies the Pieri rule for Schubert polynomials. We also give positive formulas for double versions of the $\widetilde{\mathfrak S}_w$ as well as their localizations.
We derive explicit Pieri-type multiplication formulas in the Grothendieck ring of a flag variety. These expand the product of an arbitrary Schubert class and a special Schubert class in the basis of Schubert classes. These special Schubert classes are indexed by a cycle which has either the form (k-p+1,k-p+2,...,k+1) or the form (k+p,k+p-1,...,k), and are pulled back from a Grassmannian projection. Our formulas are in terms of certain labeled chains in the k-Bruhat order on the symmetric group and are combinatorial in that they involve no cancellations. We also show that the multiplicities in …
We show the equivalence of the Pieri formula for flag manifolds and certain identities among the structure constants, giving new proofs of both the Pieri formula and of these identities. A key step is the association of a symmetric function to a finite poset with labeled Hasse diagram satisfying a symmetry condition. This gives a unified definition of skew Schur functions, Stanley symmetric function, and skew Schubert functions (defined here). We also use algebraic geometry to show the coefficient of a monomial in a Schubert polynomial counts certain chains in the Bruhat order, obtaining a new…
We give explicit formulas for the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson classes of all Schubert varieties in the Grassmannian of $d$-planes in a vector space, and conjecture that these classes are effective. We prove this is the case for (very) small values of $d$.
We establish an equivariant quantum Giambelli formula for partial flag varieties. The answer is given in terms of a specialization of universal double Schubert polynomials. Along the way, we give new proofs of the presentation of the equivariant quantum cohomology ring, as well as Graham-positivity of the structure constants in equivariant quantum Schubert calculus.
We establish a Gysin formula for Schubert bundles and a strong version of the duality theorem in Schubert calculus on Grassmann bundles. We then combine them to compute the fundamental classes of Schubert bundles in Grassmann bundles, which yields a new proof of the Giambelli formula for vector bundles.
We propose a theory of double Schubert polynomials P_w(X,Y) for the Lie types B, C, D which naturally extends the family of Lascoux of Schutzenberger in type A. These polynomials satisfy positivity, orthogonality, and stability properties, and represent the classes of Schubert varieties and degeneracy loci of vector bundles. When w is a maximal Grassmannian element of the Weyl group, P_w(X,Y) can be expressed in terms of Schur-type determinants and Pfaffians, in analogy with the type A formula of Kempf and Laksov. An example, motivated by quantum cohomology, shows that there are no Chern class…
Let $LG_n$ denote the Lagrangian Grassmannian parametrizing maximal isotropic (Lagrangian) subspaces of a fixed symplectic vector space of dimension $2n.$ For each strict partition $λ=(λ_1,...,λ_k)$ with $λ_1\leq n$ there is a Schubert variety $X(λ).$ Let $T$ denote a maximal torus of the symplectic group acting on $LG_n.$ Consider the $T$-equivariant cohomology of $LG_n$ and the $T$-equivariant fundamental class $σ(λ)$ of $X(λ).$ The main result of the present paper is an explicit formula for the restriction of the class $σ(λ)$ to any torus fixed point. The formula is written in terms of fact…
We introduce the notion of a cominuscule point in a Schubert variety in a generalized flag variety for a semisimple group. We derive formulas expressing the Hilbert series and multiplicity of a Schubert variety at a cominuscule point in terms of the restrictions of classes in torus-equivariant K-theory and cohomology to that point, generalizing previously known formulas for flag varieties of cominuscule type. Thus, we can calculate Hilbert series and multiplicities in cases where these were previously unknown. The formulas for Schubert varieties are special cases of more general formulas valid…
We survey the recent study of involution Schubert polynomials and a modest generalization that we call degenerate involution Schubert polynomials. We cite several conditions when (degenerate) involution Schubert polynomials have simple factorization formulae. Such polynomials can be computed by traversing through chains in certain weak order posets, and we provide explicit descriptions of such chains in weak order for involutions and degenerate involutions. As an application, we give several examples of how certain multiplicity-free sums of Schubert polynomials factor completely into very simp…
In a classical-type flag variety, we consider a Schubert variety associated to a vexillary (signed) permutation, and establish a combinatorial formula for the Hilbert-Samuel multiplicity of a point on such a Schubert variety. The formula is expressed in terms of excited Young diagrams, and extends results for Grassmannians due to Krattenthaler, Lakshmibai-Raghavan-Sankaran, and for the maximal isotropic (symplectic and orthogonal) Grassmannians to Ghorpade-Raghavan, Raghavan-Upadhyay, Kreiman, and Ikeda-Naruse. We also provide a new proof of a theorem of Li-Yong in the type A vexillary case. T…
Extending results of Wyser, we determine formulas for the equivariant cohomology classes of closed orbits of certain families of spherical subgroups of $GL_n$ on the flag variety $GL_n/B$. Putting this together with a slight extension of the results of Can-Joyce-Wyser, we arrive at a family of polynomial identities which show that certain explicit sums of Schubert polynomials factor as products of linear forms.
Fulton and Woodward have recently identified the smallest degree of $q$ that appears in the expansion of the product of two Schubert classes in the (small) quantum cohomology ring of a Grassmannian. We present a combinatorial proof of this result, and provide an alternative characterization of this smallest degree in terms of the rim hook formula for the quantum product.
We answer some questions related to multiplicity formulas by Rosenthal and Zelevinsky and by Lakshmibai and Weyman for points on Schubert varieties in Grassmannians. In particular, we give combinatorial interpretations in terms of nonintersecting lattice paths of these formulas, which makes the equality of the two formulas immediately obvious. Furthermore we provide an alternative determinantal formula for these multiplicities, and we show that they count semistandard tableaux of unusual shapes.
Consider a partial flag variety $X$ which is not a grassmaninan. Consider also its cohomology ring ${\rm H}^*(X,\ZZ)$ endowed with the base formed by the Poincaré dual classes of the Schubert varieties. In \cite{Richmond:recursion}, E. Richmond showed that some coefficient structure of the product in ${\rm H}^*(X,\ZZ)$ are products of two such coefficients for smaller flag varieties. Consider now a quiver without oriented cycle. If $α$ and $β$ denote two dimension-vectors, $α\circβ$ denotes the number of $α$-dimensional subrepresentations of a general $α+β$-dimensional representation. In \cite…
Regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties are a family of subvarieties of the flag variety that arise in number theory, numerical analysis, representation theory, algebraic geometry, and combinatorics. We give a "Giambelli formula" expressing the classes of regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties in terms of Chern classes. In fact, we show that the cohomology class of each regular semisimple Hessenberg variety is the specialization of a certain double Schubert polynomial, giving a natural geometric interpretation to such specializations. We also decompose such classes in terms of the Schubert ba…
The main theorem here is the K-theoretic analogue of the cohomological `stable double component formula' for quiver functions in [Knutson, Miller, and Shimozono, math.AG/0308142]. This K-theoretic version is still in terms of lacing diagrams, but nonminimal diagrams contribute terms of higher degree. The motivating consequence is a conjecture of A. Buch on the sign-alternation of the coefficients appearing in his expansion of quiver K-polynomials in terms of stable Grothendieck polynomials for partitions [Buch, math.AG/0104029].
