We survey the recent study of involution Schubert polynomials and a modest generalization that we call degenerate involution Schubert polynomials. We cite several conditions when (degenerate) involution Schubert polynomials have simple factorization formulae. Such polynomials can be computed by traversing through chains in certain weak order posets, and we provide explicit descriptions of such chains in weak order for involutions and degenerate involutions. As an application, we give several examples of how certain multiplicity-free sums of Schubert polynomials factor completely into very simple linear factors.
We prove that in finite, simply laced types, every Schubert variety indexed by an involution which is not the longest element of some parabolic subgroup is singular.
Involution words are variations of reduced words for involutions in Coxeter groups, first studied under the name of "admissible sequences" by Richardson and Springer. They are maximal chains in Richardson and Springer's weak order on involutions. This article is the first in a series of papers on involution words, and focuses on their enumerative properties. We define involution analogues of several objects associated to permutations, including Rothe diagrams, the essential set, Schubert polynomials, and Stanley symmetric functions. These definitions have geometric interpretations for certain …
The orbits of the orthogonal and symplectic groups on the flag variety are in bijection, respectively, with the involutions and fixed-point-free involutions in the symmetric group $S_n$. Wyser and Yong have described polynomial representatives for the cohomology classes of the closures of these orbits, which we denote as $\hat{\mathfrak{S}}_y$ (to be called involution Schubert polynomials) and $\hat{\mathfrak{S}}^{\tt FPF}_y$ (to be called fixed-point-free involution Schubert polynomials). Our main results are explicit formulas decomposing the product of $\hat{\mathfrak{S}}_y$ (respectively, $…
Involution Schubert polynomials represent cohomology classes of $K$-orbit closures in the complete flag variety, where $K$ is the orthogonal or symplectic group. We show they also represent $T$-equivariant cohomology classes of subvarieties defined by upper-left rank conditions in the spaces of symmetric or skew-symmetric matrices. This geometry implies that these polynomials are positive combinations of monomials in the variables $x_i + x_j$, and we give explicit formulas of this kind as sums over new objects called involution pipe dreams. Our formulas are analogues of the Billey-Jockusch-Sta…
We consider the loci of invertible linear maps $f : \mathbb{C}^n \to {(\mathbb{C}^n)}^*$ together with pairs of flags $(E_\bullet, F_\bullet)$ in $\mathbb{C}^n$ such that the various restrictions $f : F_j \to E_i^*$ have specified ranks. Identifying an invertible linear map with its graph viewed as a point in a Grassmannian, we show that the closures of these loci have cohomology classes represented by the back-stable Schubert polynomials of Lam, Lee, and Shimozono. As a special case, we recover the result of Knutson, Lam, and Speyer that Stanley symmetric functions represent the classes of gr…
The quantum double Schubert polynomials studied by Kirillov and Maeno, and by Ciocan-Fontanine and Fulton, are shown to represent Schubert classes in Kim's presentation of the equivariant quantum cohomology of the flag variety. We define parabolic analogues of quantum double Schubert polynomials, and show that they represent Schubert classes in the equivariant quantum cohomology of partial flag varieties. For complete flags Anderson and Chen have announced a proof with different methods.
Combinatorial $B_n$-analogues of Schubert polynomials and corresponding symmetric functions are constructed from an exponential solution of the $B_n$-Yang-Baxter equation that involves the nilCoxeter algebra of the hyperoctahedral group.
Schubert polynomials for the classical groups were defined by S.Billey and M.Haiman in 1995; they are polynomial representatives of Schubert classes in a full flag variety of a classical group. We provide a combinatorial description for these polynomials, as well as their double versions, by introducing analogues of pipe dreams, or RC-graphs, for the Weyl groups of the classical types.
There is a remarkable formula for the principal specialization of a type A Schubert polynomial as a weighted sum over reduced words. Taking appropriate limits transforms this to an identity for the backstable Schubert polynomials recently introduced by Lam, Lee, and Shimozono. This note identifies some analogues of the latter formula for principal specializations of Schubert polynomials in classical types B, C, and D. We also describe some more general identities for Grothendieck polynomials. As a related application, we derive a simple proof of a pipe dream formula for involution Grothendieck…
The classical $q$-analogue of the integers was recently generalized by Morier-Genoud and Ovsienko to give $q$-analogues of rational numbers. Some combinatorial interpretations are already known, namely as the rank generating functions for certain partially ordered sets. We review some of these interpretations, and additionally give a slightly novel approach in terms of planar graphs called snake graphs. Using the snake graph approach, we show that the numerators of $q$-rationals count the sizes of certain varieties over finite fields, which are unions of open Schubert cells in some Grassmannia…
The quantum Bruhat graph, which is an extension of the graph formed by covering relations in the Bruhat order, is naturally related to the quantum cohomology ring of G/B. We enhance a result of Fulton and Woodward by showing that the minimal monomial in the quantum parameters that occurs in the quantum product of two Schubert classes has a simple interpretation in terms of directed paths in this graph. We define path Schubert polynomials, which are quantum cohomology analogues of skew Schubert polynomials recently introduced by Lenart and Sottile. They are given by sums over paths in the quant…
For each infinite series of the classical Lie groups of type B,C or D, we introduce a family of polynomials parametrized by the elements of the corresponding Weyl group of infinite rank. These polynomials represent the Schubert classes in the equivariant cohomology of the appropriate flag variety. They satisfy a stability property, and are a natural extension of the (single) Schubert polynomials of Billey and Haiman, which represent non-equivariant Schubert classes. They are also positive in a certain sense, and when indexed by maximal Grassmannian elements, or by the longest element in a fini…
The orbits of the symplectic group acting on the type A flag variety are indexed by the fixed-point-free involutions in a finite symmetric group. The cohomology classes of the closures of these orbits have polynomial representatives $\hat{\mathfrak{S}}^{\tt{FPF}}_z$ akin to Schubert polynomials. We show that the fixed-point-free involution Stanley symmetric functions $\hat{F}^{\tt{FPF}}_z$, which are stable limits of the polynomials $\hat{\mathfrak{S}}^{\tt{FPF}}_z$, are Schur $P$-positive. To do so, we construct an analogue of the Lascoux-Schützenberger tree, an algebraic recurrence that comp…
We prove a common generalization of the fact that the weighted number of maximal chains in the strong Bruhat order on the symmetric group is ${n \choose 2}!$ for both the code weights and the Chevalley weights. We also define weights which give a one-parameter family of strong order analogues of Macdonald's reduced word identity for Schubert polynomials.
We define an analogue of signed Eulerian numbers $f_{n,k}$ for involutions of the symmetric group and derive some combinatorial properties of this sequence. In particular, we exhibit both an explicit formula and a recurrence for $f_{n,k}$ arising from the properties of its generating function.
Buch and Fulton conjectured the nonnegativity of the quiver coefficients appearing in their formula for a quiver variety. Knutson, Miller and Shimozono proved this conjecture as an immediate consequence of their ``component formula''. We present an alternative proof of the component formula by substituting combinatorics for Grobner degeneration. We relate the component formula to the work of Buch, Kresch, Tamvakis and the author where a ``splitting'' formula for Schubert polynomials in terms of quiver coefficients was obtained. We prove analogues of this latter result for the type BCD-Schubert…
We study a family of symmetric functions $\hat F_z$ indexed by involutions $z$ in the affine symmetric group. These power series are analogues of Lam's affine Stanley symmetric functions and generalizations of the involution Stanley symmetric functions introduced by Hamaker, Pawlowski, and the first author. Our main result is to prove a transition formula for $\hat F_z$ which can be used to define an affine involution analogue of the Lascoux-Schützenberger tree. Our proof of this formula relies on Lam and Shimozono's transition formula for affine Stanley symmetric functions and some new techni…
Several authors have examined connections among restricted permutations, continued fractions, and Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind. In this paper we prove analogues of these results for involutions which avoid 3412. Our results include a recursive procedure for computing the generating function for involutions which avoid 3412 and any set of additional patterns. We use our results to give enumerations and generating functions for involutions which avoid 3412 and various sets of additional patterns. In many cases we express these generating functions in terms of Chebyshev polynomials of…

We establish the conjecture of Reiner and Yong for an explicit combinatorial formula for the expansion of a Grothendieck polynomial into the basis of Lascoux polynomials. This expansion is a subtle refinement of its symmetric function version due to Buch, Kresch, Shimozono, Tamvakis, and Yong, which gives the expansion of stable Grothendieck polynomials indexed by permutations into Grassmannian stable Grothendieck polynomials. Our expansion is the K-theoretic analogue of that of a Schubert polynomial into Demazure characters, whose symmetric analogue is the expansion of a Stanley symmetric fun…
The open intervals in the Bruhat order on twisted involutions in a Coxeter group are shown to be PL spheres. This implies results conjectured by F. Incitti and sharpens the known fact that these posets are Gorenstein* over Z_2. We also introduce a Boolean cell complex which is an analogue for twisted involutions of the Coxeter complex. Several classical Coxeter complex properties are shared by our complex. When the group is finite, it is a shellable sphere, shelling orders being given by the linear extensions of the weak order on twisted involutions. Furthermore, the h-polynomial of the comple…
In this paper, we introduce a family of symmetric polynomials by specializing the factorial Schur polynomials. These polynomials represent the weighted Schubert classes of the cohomology of the weighted Grassmannian introduced by Corti-Reid, and we regard these polynomials as analogue of the Schur polynomials. We show that those twisted Schur polynomials are the characters of certain representations. Thus we give an interpretation of the Schubert structure constants of the weighted Grassmannians as the (rational) multiplicities of tensor products of the representations. Furthermore, we derive …
Based on weighted noncrossing partitions of type B, we obtain type B analogues of Coker's identities on the Narayana polynomials. A parity reversing involution is given for the alternating sum of Narayana numbers of type B. Moreover, we find type B analogues of the refinements of Coker's identities due to Chen, Deutsch and Elizalde. By combinatorial constructions, we provide type B analogues of three identities of Mansour and Sun also on the Narayana polynomials.
A "flip-and-reversal" involution arising in the study of quasisymmetric Schur functions provides a passage between what we term "Young" and "reverse" variants of bases of polynomials or quasisymmetric functions. Building on this perspective, which has found recent application in the study of $q$-analogues of combinatorial Hopf algebras and generalizations of dual immaculate functions, we develop and explore Young analogues of well-known bases for polynomials. We prove several combinatorial formulas for the Young analogue of the key polynomials, show that they form the generating functions for …
Let $(W,S)$ be a Coxeter system and write $P_W(q)$ for its Poincaré series. Lusztig has shown that the quotient $P_W(q^2)/P_W(q)$ is equal to a certain power series $L_{W}(q)$, defined by specializing one variable in the generating function recording the lengths and absolute lengths of the involutions in $W$. The simplest inductive method of proving this result for finite Coxeter groups suggests a natural bivariate generalization $L^J_W(s,q) \in \mathbb{Z}[[s,q]]$ depending on a subset $J\subset S$. This new power series specializes to $L_W(q)$ when $s=-1$ and is given explicitly by a sum of r…
The complex orthogonal and symplectic groups both act on the complete flag variety with finitely many orbits. We study two families of polynomials introduced by Wyser and Yong representing the $K$-theory classes of the closures of these orbits. Our polynomials are analogous to the Grothendieck polynomials representing $K$-classes of Schubert varieties, and we show that like Grothendieck polynomials, they are uniquely characterized among all polynomials representing the relevant classes by a certain stability property. We show that the same polynomials represent the equivariant $K$-classes of s…
In a previous paper, we studied an overpartition analogue of Gaussian polynomials as the generating function for overpartitions fitting inside an $m \times n$ rectangle. Here, we add one more parameter counting the number of overlined parts, obtaining a two-parameter generalization $\overline{m+n \brack n}_{q,t}$ of Gaussian polynomials, which is also a $(q,t)$-analogue of Delannoy numbers. First we obtain finite versions of classical $q$-series identities such as the $q$-binomial theorem and the Lebesgue identity, as well as two-variable generalizations of classical identities involving Gauss…
We introduce an enriched analogue of Lam and Pylyavskyy's theory of set-valued $P$-partitions. An an application, we construct a $K$-theoretic version of Stembridge's Hopf algebra of peak quasisymmetric functions. We show that the symmetric part of this algebra is generated by Ikeda and Naruse's shifted stable Grothendieck polynomials. We give the first proof that the natural skew analogues of these power series are also symmetric. A central tool in our constructions is a "$K$-theoretic" Hopf algebra of labeled posets, which may be of independent interest. Our results also lead to some new exp…
