The open intervals in the Bruhat order on twisted involutions in a Coxeter group are shown to be PL spheres. This implies results conjectured by F. Incitti and sharpens the known fact that these posets are Gorenstein* over Z_2.
We also introduce a Boolean cell complex which is an analogue for twisted involutions of the Coxeter complex. Several classical Coxeter complex properties are shared by our complex. When the group is finite, it is a shellable sphere, shelling orders being given by the linear extensions of the weak order on twisted involutions. Furthermore, the h-polynomial of the complex coincides with the polynomial counting twisted involutions by descents. In particular, this gives a type independent proof that the latter is symmetric.
Let $W$ be a finite Coxeter group and $X$ a subset of $W$. The length polynomial $L_{W,X}(t)$ is defined by $L_{W,X}(t) = \sum_{x \in X} t^{\ell(x)}$, where $\ell$ is the length function on $W$. In this article we derive expressions for the length polynomial where $X$ is any conjugacy class of involutions, or the set of all involutions, in any finite Coxeter group $W$. In particular, these results correct errors in the paper "Permutation statistics on involutions", W.M.B. Dukes., European J. Combin. 28 (2007), 186--198. for the involution length polynomials of Coxeter groups of type $B_n$ and …
Given an involutive automorphism $θ$ of a Coxeter system $(W,S)$, let $\mathfrak{I}(θ) \subseteq W$ denote the set of twisted involutions. We provide a minimal set of moves that can be added to the braid moves, in order to connect all reduced $\underline{S}$-expressions (also known as admissible sequences, reduced $I_θ$-expressions, or involution words) for any given $w \in \mathfrak{I}(θ)$. This can be viewed as an analogue of the well-known word property for Coxeter groups. It improves upon a result of Hamaker, Marberg, and Pawlowski, and generalises similar statements valid in certain types…
An element of a Coxeter group $W$ is fully commutative if any two of its reduced decompositions are related by a series of transpositions of adjacent commuting generators. In the present work, we focus on fully commutative involutions, which are characterized in terms of Viennot's heaps. By encoding the latter by Dyck-type lattice walks, we enumerate fully commutative involutions according to their length, for all classical finite and affine Coxeter groups. In the finite cases, we also find explicit expressions for their generating functions with respect to the major index. Finally in affine t…
Frieze patterns of numbers, introduced in the early 70's by Coxeter, are currently attracting much interest due to connections with the recent theory of cluster algebras. The present paper aims to review the original work of Coxeter and the new developments around the notion of frieze, focusing on the representation theoretic, geometric and combinatorial approaches.
We consider the question of determining whether a given group (especially one generated by involutions) is a right-angled Coxeter group. We describe a group invariant, the involution graph, and we characterize the involution graphs of right-angled Coxeter groups. We use this characterization to describe a process for constructing candidate right-angled Coxeter presentations for a given group or proving that one cannot exist. We provide some first applications. In addition, we provide an elementary proof of rigidity of the defining graph for a right-angled Coxeter group. We also recover a resul…
Let (W,S) be a Coxeter system. We introduce the boolean complex of involutions of W which is an analogue of the boolean complex of W studied by Ragnarsson and Tenner. By applying discrete Morse theory, we determine the homotopy type of the boolean complex of involutions for a large class of (W,S), including all finite Coxeter groups, finding that the homotopy type is that of a wedge of spheres of dimension |S| - 1. In addition, we find simple recurrence formulas for the number of spheres in the wedge.
We solve two open problems in Coxeter-Catalan combinatorics. First, we introduce a family of rational noncrossing objects for any finite Coxeter group, using the combinatorics of distinguished subwords. Second, we give a type-uniform proof that these noncrossing Catalan objects are counted by the rational Coxeter-Catalan number, using the character theory of the associated Hecke algebra and the properties of Lusztig's exotic Fourier transform. We solve the same problems for rational noncrossing parking objects.
We describe an algorithm to identify a minimal set of "braid relations" which span and preserve all sets of involution words for twisted Coxeter systems of finite or affine type. We classify the cases in which adding the smallest possible set of "half-braid" relations to the ordinary braid relations produces a spanning set: in the untwisted case, this occurs for the Coxeter systems which are finite with rank two or type $A_n$, or affine with rank three or type $\tilde A_n$. These results generalize recent work of Hu and Zhang on the finite classical cases.
We present an alternative construction of Soergel's category of bimodules associated to a reflection faithful representation of a Coxeter system. We show that its objects can be viewed as sheaves on the associated moment graph. We introduce an exact structure and show that Soergel's "special" bimodules are the projective objects. Then we construct the indecomposable projectives by both a global and a local method, discuss a version of the Kazhdan-Lusztig conjecture and prove it for universal Coxeter systems.
We introduce bijections between generalized type $A_n$ noncrossing partitions (that is, associated to arbitrary standard Coxeter elements) and fully commutative elements of the same type. The latter index the diagram basis of the classical Temperley-Lieb algebra, while for each choice of standard Coxeter element the corresponding noncrossing partitions also index a basis, given by the images in the Temperley-Lieb algebra of the simple elements of the dual Garside structure (associated to this choice of standard Coxeter element) of the Artin braid group on $n+1$ strands. We then show that our b…
For a finite Coxeter system and a subset of its diagram nodes, we define spherical elements (a generalization of Coxeter elements). Conjecturally, for Weyl groups, spherical elements index Schubert varieties in a flag manifold G/B that are spherical for the action of a Levi subgroup. We evidence the conjecture, employing the combinatorics of Demazure modules, and work of R. Avdeev-A. Petukhov, M. Can-R. Hodges, R. Hodges-V. Lakshmibai, P. Karuppuchamy, P. Magyar-J. Weyman-A. Zelevinsky, N. Perrin, J. Stembridge, and B. Tenner. In type A, we establish connections with the key polynomials of A. …
Involution words are variations of reduced words for twisted involutions in Coxeter groups. They arise naturally in the study of the Bruhat order, of certain Iwahori-Hecke algebra modules, and of orbit closures in flag varieties. Specifically, to any twisted involutions $x$, $y$ in a Coxeter group $W$ with automorphism $*$, we associate a set of involution words $\hat{\mathcal{R}}_*(x,y)$. This set is the disjoint union of the reduced words of a set of group elements $\mathcal{A}_*(x,y)$, which we call the atoms of $y$ relative to $x$. The atoms, in turn, are contained in a larger set $\mathca…
In this paper, we continue the development of a new combinatorial model for the irreducible characters of a complex semisimple Lie group. This model, which will be referred to as the alcove path model, can be viewed as a discrete counterpart to the Littelmann path model. It leads to an extensive generalization of the combinatorics of irreducible characters from Lie type A (where the combinatorics is based on Young tableaux, for instance) to arbitrary type. The main results of this paper are: (1) a combinatorial description of the crystal graphs corresponding to the irreducible representations …
Let $B$ be the group of invertible upper-triangular complex $n\times n$ matrices, $\mathfrak{u}$ the space of upper-triangular complex matrices with zeroes on the diagonal and $\mathfrak{u}^*$ its dual space. The group $B$ acts on $\mathfrak{u}^*$ by $(g.f)(x)=f(gxg^{-1})$, $g\in B$, $f\in\mathfrak{u}^*$, $x\in\mathfrak{u}$. To each involution $σ$ in $S_n$, the symmetric group on $n$ letters, one can assign the $B$-orbit $Ω_σ\in\mathfrak{u}^*$. We present a combinatorial description of the partial order on the set of involutions induced by the orbit closures. The answer is given in terms of ro…
We prove two extensions of Hansson and Hultman's word property for certain analogues of reduced words associated to twisted involutions in Coxeter groups. Our first extension concerns the superset of such words in which terms with a natural commutativity property may be optionally primed. Our other extension involves variants of these words in which a defining minimal length condition is relaxed. In type A the sets considered are closely related to generating functions for Schur Q-functions and K-theoretic Schur P-functions.
An involution in a Coxeter group has an associated set of involution words, a variation on reduced words. These words are saturated chains in a partial order first considered by Richardson and Springer in their study of symmetric varieties. In the symmetric group, involution words can be enumerated in terms of tableaux using appropriate analogues of the symmetric functions introduced by Stanley to accomplish the same task for reduced words. We adapt this approach to the group of signed permutations. We show that involution words for the longest element in the Coxeter group $C_n$ are in bijecti…
The action of a Coxeter group $W$ on the set of left cosets of a standard parabolic subgroup deforms to define a module $\mathcal{M}^J$ of the group's Iwahori-Hecke algebra $\mathcal{H}$ with a particularly simple form. Rains and Vazirani have introduced the notion of a quasiparabolic set to characterize $W$-sets for which analogous deformations exist; a motivating example is the conjugacy class of fixed point free involutions in the symmetric group. Deodhar has shown that the module $\mathcal{M}^J$ possesses a certain antilinear involution, called the bar operator, and a certain basis invaria…
In this thesis, we study the combinatorics of cyclically fully commutative elements in Coxeter groups of type $A$ as it relates to conjugacy. In particular, we introduce the notion of cylindrical heaps and ring equivalence in order to state our main result, which says that two cyclically fully commutative elements of a Coxeter group of type $A$ are conjugate if and only if their corresponding cylindrical heaps are ring equivalent.
In this paper we will give a Möbius number of $NC^{k}(W) \setminus \bf{mins} \cup \{\hat{0} \}$ for a Coxeter group $W$ which contains an affirmative answer for the conjecture 3.7.9 in Armstrong's paper [ Generalized noncrossing partitions and combinatorics of Coxeter groups. arXiv:math/0611106].
We define a new class of countable groups, which are defined by its action on the set of monotonic numberings (diagrams) of an arbitrary finite or countable partial ordered set (poset). These groups are generated by the set of involutions? and in the case of finite posets could be considered as generalization of Coxeter's symmetric groups. We discuss the problems concerned to infinite groups jf this type, in particular the problem of the descripton of invariant measures on the space of numberings (central measures)with respect to actions of those groups. The probelms are tightly connected with…
The category of matchings between finite sets extends to the category of cobordisms of signed sets. A chain of cobordisms that starts and ends with unsigned sets A and B yields a matching from A to B. This is a convenient way to package the involution principle of Garsia and Milne, which reveals itself to have little to do with involutions.
We extend properties of the weak order on finite Coxeter groups to Weyl groupoids admitting a finite root system. In particular, we determine the topological structure of intervals with respect to weak order, and show that the set of morphisms with fixed target object forms an ortho-complemented meet semilattice. We define the Coxeter complex of a Weyl groupoid with finite root system and show that it coincides with the triangulation of a sphere cut out by a simplicial hyperplane arrangement. As a consequence, one obtains an algebraic interpretation of many hyperplane arrangements that are not…
This memoir constitutes the author's PhD thesis at Cornell University. It serves both as an expository work and as a description of new research. At the heart of the memoir, we introduce and study a poset $NC^{(k)}(W)$ for each finite Coxeter group $W$ and for each positive integer $k$. When $k=1$, our definition coincides with the generalized noncrossing partitions introduced by Brady-Watt and Bessis. When $W$ is the symmetric group, we obtain the poset of classical $k$-divisible noncrossing partitions, first studied by Edelman. Along the way, we include a comprehensive introduction to relate…
In this paper we look at polynomials arising from statistics on the classes of involutions, $I_n$, and involutions with no fixed points, $J_n$, in the symmetric group. Our results are motivated by F. Brenti's conjecture which states that the Eulerian distribution of $I_n$ is log-concave. Symmetry of the generating functions is shown for the statistics $des, maj$ and the joint distribution $(des, maj)$. We show that $exc$ is log-concave on $I_n$, $inv$ is log-concave on $J_n$ and $des$ is partially unimodal on both $I_n$ and $J_n$. We also give recurrences and explicit forms for the generating fu…
The permutation representation afforded by a Coxeter group W acting on the cosets of a standard parabolic subgroup inherits many nice properties from W such as a shellable Bruhat order and a flat deformation over Z[q] to a representation of the corresponding Hecke algebra. In this paper we define a larger class of ``quasiparabolic" subgroups (more generally, quasiparabolic W-sets), and show that they also inherit these properties. Our motivating example is the action of the symmetric group on fixed-point-free involutions by conjugation.
The purpose of this article is to shed new light on the combinatorial structure of Kazhdan-Lusztig cells in infinite Coxeter groups $W$. Our main focus is the set $\D$ of distinguished involutions in $W$, which was introduced by Lusztig in one of his first papers on cells in affine Weyl groups. We conjecture that the set $\D$ has a simple recursive structure and can be enumerated algorithmically starting from the distinguished involutions of finite Coxeter groups. Moreover, to each element of $\D$ we assign an explicitly defined set of equivalence relations on $W$ that altogether conjecturally…
For every finite Coxeter group $Γ$, each positive braids in the corresponding braid group admits a unique decomposition as a finite sequence of elements of $Γ$, the so-called Garside-normal form. The study of the associated adjacency matrix $Adj(Γ)$ allows to count the number of Garside-normal form of a given length. In this paper we prove that the characteristic polynomial of $Adj(B_n)$ divides the one of $Adj(B_{n+1})$. The key point is the use of a Hopf algebra based on signed permutations. A similar result was already known for the type $A$. We observe that this does not hold for type $D$. T…
Applying a classical theorem of Smith, we show that the poset property of being Gorenstein$^*$ over $\mathbb{Z}_2$ is inherited by the subposet of fixed points under an involutive poset automorphism. As an application, we prove that every interval in the Bruhat order on (twisted) involutions in an arbitrary Coxeter group has this property, and we find the rank function. This implies results conjectured by F. Incitti. We also show that the Bruhat order on the fixed points of an involutive automorphism induced by a Coxeter graph automorphism is isomorphic to the Bruhat order on the fixed subgrou…
Based on the second author's thesis in this article we provide a uniform treatment of abstract involutions of algebraic groups and of Kac-Moody groups using twin buildings, RGD systems, and twisted involutions of Coxeter groups. Notably we simultaneously generalize the double coset decompositions established by Springer and by Helminck-Wang for algebraic groups and by Kac-Wang for certain Kac-Moody groups, we analyze the filtration studied by Devillers-Muhlherr in the context of arbitrary involutions, and we answer a structural question on the combinatorics of involutions of twin buildings rai…
A basis of the center of the 0-Hecke algebra of an arbitrary finite Coxeter group was described by He in 2015. This basis is indexed by certain equivalence classes of the Coxeter group whose explicit description is rather complicated. Even their number is not obvious. We consider case of the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$. Building on work of Geck, Kim and Pfeiffer, we obtain a complete set of representatives of the equivalence classes. This set is naturally parametrized by certain compositions of $n$ called maximal. It follows that the maximal compositions of $n$ index the basis of the cent…
We develop a combinatorial model of the associated Hermite polynomials and their moments, and prove their orthogonality with a sign-reversing involution. We find combinatorial interpretations of the moments as complete matchings, connected complete matchings, oscillating tableaux, and rooted maps and show weight-preserving bijections between these objects. Several identities, linearization formulas, the moment generating function, and a second combinatorial model are also derived.
An element of a Coxeter group W is fully commutative if any two of its reduced decompositions are related by a series of transpositions of adjacent commuting generators. An element of a Coxeter group W is cyclically fully commutative if any of its cyclic shifts remains fully commutative. These elements were studied in Boothby et al.. In particular the authors enumerated cyclically fully commutative elements in all Coxeter groups having a finite number of them. In this work we characterize and enumerate cyclically fully commutative elements according to their Coxeter length in all finite or aff…
We develop combinatorics of parabolic double cosets in finite Coxeter groups as a follow-up of recent articles by Billey-Konvalinka-Petersen-Slofstra-Tenner and Petersen. (1) We construct a double coset system as a generalization of a two-sided analogue of a Coxeter complex and present its order structure with its local dimension function on certain connected components. As applications of double cosets to Bruhat graphs, we also prove: (2) every parabolic double coset is regular, (3) invariance of degree on Bruhat graph on lower intervals as an analogy of the one for Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomial…
We study the combinatorics of the change of basis of three representations of the stationary state algebra of the two parameter simple asymmetric exclusion process. Each of the representations considered correspond to a different set of weighted lattice paths which, when summed over, give the stationary state probability distribution. We show that all three sets of paths are combinatorially related via sequences of bijections and sign reversing involutions.
We introduce two order relations on finite Coxeter groups which refine the absolute and the Bruhat order, and establish some of their main properties. In particular we study the restriction of these orders to noncrossing partitions and show that the intervals for these orders can be enumerated in terms of the cluster complex. The properties of our orders permit to revisit several results in Coxeter combinatorics, such as the Chapoton triangles and how they are related, the enumeration of reflections with full support, the bijections between clusters and noncrossing partitions.
Parabolic subgroups $W_I$ of Coxeter systems $(W,S)$, as well as their ordinary and double quotients $W / W_I$ and $W_I \backslash W / W_J$, appear in many contexts in combinatorics and Lie theory, including the geometry and topology of generalized flag varieties and the symmetry groups of regular polytopes. The set of ordinary cosets $w W_I$, for $I \subseteq S$, forms the Coxeter complex of $W$, and is well-studied. In this article we look at a less studied object: the set of all double cosets $W_I w W_J$ for $I, J \subseteq S$. Double coset are not uniquely presented by triples $(I,w,J)$. W…
The three main objects in noncrossing Catalan combinatorics associated to a finite Coxeter system are noncrossing partitions, clusters, and sortable elements. The first two of these have known Fuss-Catalan generalizations. We provide new viewpoints for both and introduce the missing generalization of sortable elements by lifting the theory from the Coxeter system to the associated positive Artin monoid. We show how this new perspective ties together all three generalizations, providing a uniform framework for noncrossing Fuss-Catalan combinatorics. Having developed the combinatorial theory, we…
Let $(W,S)$ be a Coxeter system and $\ast$ be an automorphism of $W$ with order $\leq 2$ such that $s^{\ast}\in S$ for any $s\in S$. Let $I_{\ast}$ be the set of twisted involutions relative to $\ast$ in $W$. In this paper we consider the case when $\ast=\text{id}$ and study the braid $I_\ast$-transformations between the reduced $I_\ast$-expressions of involutions. If $W$ is the Weyl group of type $B_n$ or $D_n$, we explicitly describe a finite set of basic braid $I_\ast$-transformations for all $n$ simultaneously, and show that any two reduced $I_\ast$-expressions for a given involution can b…
Kazhdan and Lusztig define, for an arbitrary Coxeter system $(W,S)$, a family of polynomials indexed by pairs of elements of $W$. Despite their relevance and elementary definition, the explicit computation of these polynomials is still one of the hardest open problems in algebraic combinatorics. In this paper we explicitly compute Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials for a Coxeter system of type $\tilde{B}_2$.
A model for a finite group is a set of linear characters of subgroups that can be induced to obtain every irreducible character exactly once. A perfect model for a finite Coxeter group is a model in which the relevant subgroups are the quasiparabolic centralizers of perfect involutions. In prior work, we showed that perfect models give rise to interesting examples of $W$-graphs. Here, we classify which finite Coxeter groups have perfect models. Specifically, we prove that the irreducible finite Coxeter groups with perfect models are those of types $\mathsf{A}_{n}$, $\mathsf{B}_n$, $\mathsf{D}_…
Let $W$ be a Weyl group with root lattice $Q$ and Coxeter number $h$. The elements of the finite torus $Q/(h+1)Q$ are called the $W$-{\sf parking functions}, and we call the permutation representation of $W$ on the set of $W$-parking functions the (standard) $W$-{\sf parking space}. Parking spaces have interesting connections to enumerative combinatorics, diagonal harmonics, and rational Cherednik algebras. In this paper we define two new $W$-parking spaces, called the {\sf noncrossing parking space} and the {\sf algebraic parking space}, with the following features: 1) They are defined more g…
In this paper, we study combinatorics of congruence subgroups of the modular group. More precisely, we consider the matrix equation that naturally arises in the theory of Coxeter friezes and investigate its irreducible solutions. We give new properties for minimal monomial solutions. Furthermore, we introduce the notion of minimal dynomial solutions and study their irreducibility.
For any finite Coxeter group W, we introduce two new objects: its cutting poset and its biHecke monoid. The cutting poset, constructed using a generalization of the notion of blocks in permutation matrices, almost forms a lattice on W. The construction of the biHecke monoid relies on the usual combinatorial model for the 0-Hecke algebra H_0(W), that is, for the symmetric group, the algebra (or monoid) generated by the elementary bubble sort operators. The authors previously introduced the Hecke group algebra, constructed as the algebra generated simultaneously by the bubble sort and antisort o…
The usual combinatorial model for the 0-Hecke algebra of the symmetric group is to consider the algebra (or monoid) generated by the bubble sort operators. This construction generalizes to any finite Coxeter group W. The authors previously introduced the Hecke group algebra, constructed as the algebra generated simultaneously by the bubble sort and antisort operators, and described its representation theory. In this paper, we consider instead the monoid generated by these operators. We prove that it has |W| simple and projective modules. In order to construct a combinatorial model for the simp…
