In this paper, we continue the development of a new combinatorial model for the irreducible characters of a complex semisimple Lie group. This model, which will be referred to as the alcove path model, can be viewed as a discrete counterpart to the Littelmann path model. It leads to an extensive generalization of the combinatorics of irreducible characters from Lie type A (where the combinatorics is based on Young tableaux, for instance) to arbitrary type. The main results of this paper are: (1) a combinatorial description of the crystal graphs corresponding to the irreducible representations (this result includes a transparent proof, based on the Yang-Baxter equation, of the fact that the mentioned description does not depend on the choice involved in our model); (2) a combinatorial realization of Lusztig's involution on the canonical basis (this involution exhibits the crystals as self-dual posets, corresponds to the action of the longest Weyl group element on an irreducible representation, and generalizes Schutzenberger's involution on tableaux); (3) an analog for arbitrary root systems, based on the Yang-Baxter equation, of Schutzenberger's sliding algorithm, which is also known as jeu de taquin (this algorithm has many applications to the representation theory of the Lie algebra of type A).
Motivated by a question on the graded rank of the stalks of the canonical sheaf on a Bruhat graph, we lift some equalities concerning (parabolic) Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials to this moment graph setting. Our proofs hold also in positive characteristic, under some technical assumptions.
We study the projective objects in an exact category naturally associated to a Coxeter system. We discuss an analog of the Kazhdan-Lusztig conjecture and show how it follows from a "genericity" conjecture and how the latter follows from a "Hard Lefschetz" conjecture.
Let $(W, S)$ be a Coxeter system equipped with a fixed automorphism $\ast$ of order $\leq 2$ which preserves $S$. Lusztig (and with Vogan in some special cases) have shown that the space spanned by set of "twisted" involutions was naturally endowed with a module structure of the Hecke algebra of $(W, S)$. Lusztig has conjectured that this module is isomorphic to the right ideal of the Hecke algebra (with Hecke parameter $u^2$) associated to $(W,S)$ generated by the element $X_{\emptyset}:=\sum_{w^\ast=w}u^{-\ell(w)}T_w$. In this paper we prove this conjecture in the case when $\ast=\text{id}$ …
According to an old result of Schützenberger, the involutions in a given two-sided cell of the symmetric group $\SG_n$ are all conjugate. In this paper, we study possible generalisations of this property to other types of Coxeter groups. We show that Schützenberger's result is a special case of a general result on "smooth" two-sided cells. Furthermore, we consider Kottwitz' conjecture concerning the intersections of conjugacy classes of involutions with the left cells in a finite Coxeter group. Our methods lead to a proof of this conjecture for classical types; combined with previous work, thi…
Let $(W,S)$ be any Coxeter system and let $w \mapsto w^*$ be an involution of $W$ which preserves the set of simple generators $S$. Lusztig and Vogan have shown that the corresponding set of twisted involutions (i.e., elements $w \in W$ with $w^{-1} = w^*$) naturally generates a module of the Hecke algebra of $(W,S)$ with two distinguished bases. The transition matrix between these bases defines a family of polynomials $P^σ_{y,w}$ which one can view as a "twisted" analogue of the much-studied family of Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials of $(W,S)$. The polynomials $P^σ_{y,w}$ can have negative coeffi…
Let $(W,S)$ be a Coxeter system and let $w \mapsto w^*$ be an involution of $W$ which preserves the set of simple generators $S$. Lusztig and Vogan have recently shown that the set of twisted involutions (i.e., elements $w \in W$ with $w^{-1} = w^*$) naturally generates a module of the Hecke algebra of $(W,S)$ with two distinguished bases. The transition matrix between these bases defines a family of polynomials $P^σ_{y,w}$ which one can view as "twisted" analogues of the much-studied Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials of $(W,S)$. The polynomials $P^σ_{y,w}$ can have negative coefficients, but displa…
The purpose of this work is to provide a common combinatorial framework for some of the analogues and generalizations of Kazhdan-Lusztig R-polynomials that have appeared since the introduction of these remarkable polynomials (e.g., parabolic Kazhdan-Lusztig R-polynomials, Kazhdan-Lusztig R-polynomials of zircons, and Kazhdan-Lusztig-Vogan polynomials for fixed point free involutions).
For a reductive group G, we study the Drinfeld-Gaitsgory functor of the category of conjugation-equivariant D-modules on G. We show that this functor is an equivalence of categories, and that it has a filtration with layers expressed via parabolic induction of parabolic restriction. We use this to provide a conceptual definition of the Deligne-Lusztig involution on the set of isomorphism classes of irreducible character D-modules, which was defined previously in [Lu1, section 15].
Let $B$ be the group of invertible upper-triangular complex $n\times n$ matrices, $\mathfrak{u}$ the space of upper-triangular complex matrices with zeroes on the diagonal and $\mathfrak{u}^*$ its dual space. The group $B$ acts on $\mathfrak{u}^*$ by $(g.f)(x)=f(gxg^{-1})$, $g\in B$, $f\in\mathfrak{u}^*$, $x\in\mathfrak{u}$. To each involution $σ$ in $S_n$, the symmetric group on $n$ letters, one can assign the $B$-orbit $Ω_σ\in\mathfrak{u}^*$. We present a combinatorial description of the partial order on the set of involutions induced by the orbit closures. The answer is given in terms of ro…
We consider a group SO(2n+1) over a p-adic field, and tempered irreducible representations of this group, of unipotent reduction. We use the construction due to Lusztig of these representations. In an old paper with Moeglin, we have defined an involution in the complex vector space generated by those representations which are elliptic. It is strongly related to another involution defined by Lusztig for finite groups. We give a new definition of our involution and we prove it commutes, in some sense, with Jacquet functor.
Distinguished involutions in the affine Weyl groups, defined by G. Lusztig, play an essential role in the Kazhdan-Lusztig combinatorics of these groups. A distinguished involution is called canonical if it is the shortest element in its double coset with respect to the finite Weyl group. Each two-sided cell in the affine Weyl group contains precisely one canonical distinguished involution. In this note we calculate the canonical distinguished involutions in the affine Weyl groups of rank <8. We also prove some partial results relating canonical distinguished involutions and Dynkin's diagrams o…
We give a combinatorial evaluation of Iwahori Whittaker functions for unramified genuine principal series representations on metaplectic covers of the general linear group over a non-archimedean local field. To describe the combinatorics, we introduce new combinatorial data that we call colored data: colored Lusztig data, colored Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns, and colored lattice models. We show that all three are equivalent. To achieve the result, we give an explicit Iwahori decomposition for the maximal unipotent subgroup of a split reductive group which gives the parametrization of the generaliz…
Affine matrix-ball construction (abbreviated AMBC) was developed by Chmutov, Lewis, Pylyavskyy, and Yudovina as an affine generalization of Robinson-Schensted correspondence. We show that AMBC gives a simple way to compute a distinguished (or Duflo) involution in each Kazhdan-Lusztig cell of affine symmetric groups. We then use AMBC to give the first known canonical presentation for the asymptotic Hecke algebras of extended affine symmetric groups. As an application, we show that AMBC gives a conceptual way to compute Lusztig-Vogan bijection. For the latter we build upon prior works of Achar a…
We initiate a new approach to the study of the combinatorics of several parametrizations of canonical bases. In this work we deal with Lie algebras of type $A$. Using geometric objects called Rhombic tilings we derive a "crossing formula" to compute the actions of the crystal operators on Lusztig data for an arbitrary reduced word of the longest Weyl group element. We provide the following three applications of this result. Using the tropical Chamber Ansatz of Berenstein-Fomin-Zelevinsky we prove an enhanced version of the Anderson-Mirković conjecture for the crystal structure on MV polytopes.…
Let $G$ be the symplectic group, $Φ=C_n$ its root system, $B\subset G$ its standard Borel subgroup, $W$ the Weyl group of $Φ$. To each involution $σ\in W$ one can assign the $B$-orbit $Ω_σ$ contained in the dual space of the Lie algebra of the unipotent radical of $B$. We prove that $Ω_σ$ is contained in the Zariski closure of $Ω_τ$ if and only of $σ\leqτ$ with respect to the Bruhat--Chevalley order. We also prove that $\dimΩ_σ$ is equal to $l(σ)$, the length of $σ$ in $W$.
A problem in representation theory of $p$-adic groups is the computation of the \textit{Casselman basis} of Iwahori fixed vectors in the spherical principal series representations, which are dual to the intertwining integrals. We shall express the transition matrix $(m_{u,v})$ of the Casselman basis to another natural basis in terms of certain polynomials which are deformations of the Kazhdan-Lusztig R-polynomials. As an application we will obtain certain new functional equations for these transition matrices under the algebraic involution sending the residue cardinality $q$ to $q^{-1}$. We wi…
Let $W$ be a finite Coxeter group. It is well-known that the number of involutions in $W$ is equal to the sum of the degrees of the irreducible characters of $W$. Following a suggestion of Lusztig, we show that this equality is compatible with the decomposition of $W$ into Kazhdan--Lusztig cells. The proof uses a generalisation of the Frobenius--Schur indicator to symmetric algebras, which may be of independent interest.
We give a combinatorial description of the Springer correspondence for classical Lie algebras $\mathfrak{g}$ of type $B,C$ or $D$ and their duals $\mathfrak{g}^*$ in characteristic 2. The combinatorics used here is of the same kind as those appearing in the description of (generalized) Springer correspondence for unipotent case of classical groups $G$ by Lusztig in odd characteristic and by Lusztig and Spaltentstein in characteristic 2. It is very nice that this combinatorics gives a unified description for (generalized) Springer correspondences of classical groups in all cases, namely, in $G$…
We give an easy diagrammatical description of the parabolic Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials for the Weyl group $W_n$ of type $D_n$ with parabolic subgroup of type $A_n$ and consequently an explicit counting formula for the dimension of the morphism spaces between indecomposable projective objects in the corresponding category $Ø_0^\p$. As a byproduct we categorify irreducible $W_n$-modules corresponding to pairs of one-line partitions. Finally we indicate the motivation for introducing the combinatorics by connections to Springer theory, the category of perverse sheaves on isotropic Grassmannians …
It is shown that there is an order isomorphism $ϕ'$ from the poset $V$ of $B\times B$-orbits on the wonderful compactification of a semi-simple adjoint group $G$ with Weyl group $W$ to an interval in reverse Chevalley-Bruhat order on a non-canonically associated Coxeter group $\hat{W}$ (in general neither finite nor affine). Moreover, $ϕ'$ preserves the corresponding Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials. Springer's (partly conjectural) construction of Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials for the analogues of $V$ for general Coxeter groups $W$ is completed by reducing it by a similar order isomorphism to known r…
Combinatorics of Kazhdan-Lusztig cells in affine type $A$ was originally developed by Lusztig, Shi, and Xi. Building on their work, Chmutov, Pylyavskyy, and Yudovina introduced the affine matrix-ball construction (abbreviated AMBC) which gives an analog of Robinson-Schensted correspondence for affine symmetric groups. An alternative approach to Kazhdan-Lusztig theory in affine type $A$ was developed by Blasiak in his work on catabolism. He introduced sign insertion algorithm and conjectured that if one fixes the two-sided cell, the recording tableau of sign insertion process determines uniquel…
Let $(W,S)$ be a Coxeter system and $\ast$ an automorphism of $W$ with order $\leq 2$ and $S^{\ast}=S$. Lusztig and Vogan ([11], [14]) have introduced a $u$-deformed version $M_u$ of Kottwitz's involution module over the Iwahori-Hecke algebra $\mathscr{H}_{u}(W)$ with Hecke parameter $u^2$, where $u$ is an indeterminate. Lusztig has proved that $M_u$ is isomorphic to the left $\mathscr{H}_{u}(W)$-submodule of ${\hat{\mathscr{H}}}_u$ generated by $X_{\emptyset}:=\sum_{w^*=w\in W}{u^{-\ell(w)}T_w}$, where ${\hat{\mathscr{H}}}_u$ is the vector space consisting of all formal (possibly infinite) su…
We give a formula for the crystal structure on the integer points of the string polytopes and the $*$-crystal structure on the integer points of the string cones of type $A$ for arbitrary reduced words. As a byproduct we obtain defining inequalities for Nakashima-Zelevinsky string polytopes. Furthermore, we give an explicit description of the Kashiwara $*$-involution on string data for a special choice of reduced word.
Let $(W,S)$ be a Coxeter system, let $G$ be a finite solvable group of automorphisms of $(W,S)$ and let $φ$ be a weight function which is invariant under $G$. Let $φ_G$ denote the weight function on $W^G$ obtained by restriction from $φ$. The aim of this paper is to compare the ${\mathbf{a}}$-function, the set of Duflo involutions and the Kazhdan-Lusztig cells associated to $(W,φ)$ and to $(W^G,φ_G)$, provided that Lusztig's Conjectures hold.
The Iwahori-Hecke algebra $\mathcal{H}$ of a Coxeter system $(W,S)$ has a "standard basis" indexed by the elements of $W$ and a "bar involution" given by a certain antilinear map. Together, these form an example of what Webster calls a pre-canonical structure, relative to which the well-known Kazhdan-Lusztig basis of $\mathcal{H}$ is a canonical basis. Lusztig and Vogan have defined a representation of a modified Iwahori-Hecke algebra on the free $\mathbb{Z}[v,v^{-1}]$-module generated by the set of twisted involutions in $W$, and shown that this module has a unique pre-canonical structure sat…
Kottwitz' conjecture is concerned with the intersections of Kazhdan--Lusztig cells with conjugacy classes of involutions in finite Coxeter groups. In joint work with Bonnafé, we have recently found a way to prove this conjecture for groups of type $B_n$ and $D_n$. The argument for type $D_n$ relies on two ingredients which were used there without proof: (1) a strengthened version of the "branching rule" and (2) the consideration of "$\diamond$-twisted" involutions where $\diamond$ is a graph automorphism. In this paper we deal with (1), (2) and complete the argument for type $D_n$; moreover, w…
The action of a Coxeter group $W$ on the set of left cosets of a standard parabolic subgroup deforms to define a module $\mathcal{M}^J$ of the group's Iwahori-Hecke algebra $\mathcal{H}$ with a particularly simple form. Rains and Vazirani have introduced the notion of a quasiparabolic set to characterize $W$-sets for which analogous deformations exist; a motivating example is the conjugacy class of fixed point free involutions in the symmetric group. Deodhar has shown that the module $\mathcal{M}^J$ possesses a certain antilinear involution, called the bar operator, and a certain basis invaria…
We use geometry of the wonderful compactification to obtain a new proof of the relation between Deligne-Lusztig (or Alvis-Curtis) duality for $p$-adic groups and the homological duality. This provides a new way to introduce an involution on the set of irreducible representations of the group which has been defined by A. Zelevinsky for $G=GL(n)$ by A.-M. Aubert in general (less direct geometric approaches to this duality have been developed earlier by Schneider-Stuhler and by the second author). As a byproduct we obtain a description of the Serre functor for representations of a p-adic group.
We first describe how the Kashiwara involution on crystals of affine type $A$ is encoded by the combinatorics of aperiodic multisegments. This yields a simple relation between this involution and the Zelevinsky involution on the set of simple modules for the affine Hecke algebras. We then give efficient procedures for computing these involutions. Remarkably, these procedures do not use the underlying crystal structure. They also permit to match explicitly the Ginzburg and Ariki parametrizations of the simple modules associated to affine and cyclotomic Hecke algebras, respectively .
let $\widetilde{\bf U}^\imath$ be a quasi-split universal $\imath$quantum group associated to a quantum symmetric pair $(\widetilde{\bf U}, \widetilde{\bf U}^\imath)$ of Kac-Moody type with a diagram involution $τ$. We establish the Serre-Lusztig relations for $\widetilde{\bf U}^\imath$ associated to a simple root $i$ such that $i \neq τi$, complementary to the Serre-Lusztig relations associated to $i=τi$ which we obtained earlier. A conjecture on braid group symmetries on $\widetilde{\bf U}^\imath$ associated to $i$ disjoint from $τi$ is formulated.
In 1979, Kazhdan and Lusztig introduced the notion of "cells" (left, right and two-sided) for a Coxeter group $W$, a concept with numerous applications in Lie theory and around. Here, we address algorithmic aspects of this theory for finite $W$ which are important in applications, e.g., run explicitly through all left cells, determine the values of Lusztig's $\ba$-function, identify the characters of left cell representations. The aim is to show how type $E_8$ (the largest group of exceptional type) can be handled systematically and efficiently, too. This allows us, for the first time, to solv…
We prove Lusztig's conjectures ${\bf P1}$--${\bf P15}$ for the affine Weyl group of type $\tilde{G}_2$ for all choices of parameters. Our approach to compute Lusztig's $\mathbf{a}$-function is based on the notion of a "balanced system of cell representations" for the Hecke algebra. We show that for arbitrary Coxeter type the existence of balanced system of cell representations is sufficient to compute the $\mathbf{a}$-function and we explicitly construct such a system in type $\tilde{G}_2$ for arbitrary parameters. We then investigate the connection between Kazhdan-Lusztig cells and the Planch…
In his classic book on symmetric functions, Macdonald describes a remarkable result by Green relating the character theory of the finite general linear group to transition matrices between bases of symmetric functions. This connection allows us to analyze the representation theory of the general linear group via symmetric group combinatorics. Using the work of Ennola, Kawanaka, Lusztig and Srinivasan, this paper describes the analogous setting for the finite unitary group. In particular, we explain the connection between Deligne-Lusztig theory and Ennola's efforts to generalize Green's work, a…
Let $W$ be a finite Weyl group and $\sg$ be a non-trivial graph automorphism of $W$. We show a remarkable relation between the $\sg$-twisted involution module for $W$ and the Frobenius--Schur indicators of the unipotent characters of a corresponding twisted finite group of Lie type. This extends earlier results of Lusztig-Vogan for the untwisted case and then allows us to state a general result valid for any finite group of Lie type. Inspired by recent work of Marberg, we also formally define Frobenius--Schur indicators for "unipotent characters" of twisted dihedral groups.
We describe the equivariant K-groups of a family of generalized Steinberg varieties that interpolates between the Steinberg variety of a reductive, complex algebraic group and its nilpotent cone in terms of the extended affine Hecke algebra and double cosets in the extended affine Weyl group. As an application, we use this description to define Kazhdan-Lusztig "bar" involutions and Kazhdan-Lusztig bases for these equivariant K-groups.
We define an involution on the space of elliptic unipotent Langlands parameters of a reductive $p$-adic group $G$ and verify that when $G$ is split adjoint exceptional, the composition of this involution with the hyperspecial parahoric restriction map agrees with Lusztig's nonabelian Fourier transform for unipotent representations of the finite reductive quotient. This is inspired by recent works of Lusztig on the almost unipotent characters of $p$-adic groups and of Moeglin and Waldspurger on the elliptic Fourier transform of odd orthogonal groups.
We give a purely combinatorial proof of the positivity of the stabilized forms of the generalized exponents associated to each classical root system. In finite type A_{n-1}, we rederive the description of the generalized exponents in terms of crystal graphs without using the combinatorics of semistandard tableaux or the charge statistic. In finite type C_n, we obtain a combinatorial description of the generalized exponents based on the so-called distinguished vertices in crystals of type A_{2n-1}, which we also connect to symplectic King tableaux. This gives a combinatorial proof of the positi…
In this paper we define and study what we call the double Catalan monoid. This monoid is the image of a natural map from the 0-Hecke monoid to the monoid of binary relations. We show that the double Catalan monoid provides an algebraization of the (combinatorial) set of 4321-avoiding permutations and relate its combinatorics to various off-shoots of both the combinatorics of Catalan numbers and the combinatorics of permutations. In particular, we give an algebraic interpretation of the first derivative of the Kreweras involution on Dyck paths, of 4321-avoiding involutions and of recent results…
The purpose of this article is to shed new light on the combinatorial structure of Kazhdan-Lusztig cells in infinite Coxeter groups $W$. Our main focus is the set $\D$ of distinguished involutions in $W$, which was introduced by Lusztig in one of his first papers on cells in affine Weyl groups. We conjecture that the set $\D$ has a simple recursive structure and can be enumerated algorithmically starting from the distinguished involutions of finite Coxeter groups. Moreover, to each element of $\D$ we assign an explicitly defined set of equivalence relations on $W$ that altogether conjecturally…
Let $\mathbf{w}_0$ be a reduced expression for the longest element of the Weyl group, adapted to a quiver of type $A_n$. We compare Lusztig's and Kashiwara's (string) parametrizations of the canonical basis associated with $\mathbf{w}_0$. Crystal operators act in a finite number of patterns in Lusztig's parametrization, which may be seen as vectors. We show this set gives the system of defining inequalities of the string cone constructed by Gleizer and Postnikov. We use combinatorics of Auslander-Reiten quivers, and as a by-product we get an alternative enumeration of a set of inequalities def…
In this paper, we look at the problem of determining the composition factors for the affine graded Hecke algebra via the computation of Kazhdan-Lusztig type polynomials. We review the algorithms of \cite{L1,L2}, and use them in particular to compute, at every real central character which admits tempered modules, the geometric parameterization, the Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials, the composition series, and the Iwahori-Matsumoto involution for the representations with Iwahori fixed vectors of the split $p$-adic groups of type $G_2$ and $F_4$.
We introduce the computer algebra package {\sf PyCox}, written entirely in the {\sf Python} language. It implements a set of algorithms - in a spirit similar to the older {\sf CHEVIE} system - for working with Coxeter groups and Hecke algebras. This includes a new variation of the traditional algorithm for computing Kazhdan--Lusztig cells and $W$-graphs, which works efficiently for all finite groups of rank $\leq 8$ (except $E_8$). We also discuss the computation of Lusztig's leading coefficients of character values and distinguished involutions (which works for $E_8$ as well). Our experiments…
Using a general result of Lusztig, we give explicit formulas for the dimensions of K^F-invariants in irreducible representations of G^F, when G=GL_n, F:G->G is a Frobenius map, and K is an F-stable subgroup of finite index in G^theta for some involution theta:G->G commuting with F. The proofs use some combinatorial facts about characters of symmetric groups.
We show that, for a connected reductive algebraic group G over an algebraically closed field of zero or good characteristic, the parts, called strata, in the partition of G recently introduced by Lusztig are unions of sheets of conjugacy classes. For G simple and adjoint we refine the parametrization of such sheets obtained in previous work with F. Esposito. We give a simple combinatorial description of strata containing spherical conjugacy classes, showing that Lusztig's correspondence induces a bijection between unions of spherical conjugacy classes and unions of classes of involutions in th…
We study 2-representations of finitary 2-categories with involution and adjunctions by functors on module categories over finite dimensional algebras. In particular, we define, construct and describe in detail (right) cell 2-representations inspired by Kazhdan-Lusztig cell modules for Hecke algebras. Under some natural assumptions we show that cell 2-representations are strongly simple and do not depend on the choice of a right cell inside a two-sided cell. This reproves and extends the uniqueness result on categorification of Kazhdan-Lusztig cell modules for Hecke algebras of type $A$ from \c…
A type of directed multigraph called a W-digraph is introduced to model the structure of certain representations of Hecke algebras, including those constructed by Lusztig and Vogan from involutions in a Weyl group. Building on results of Lusztig, a complete characterization of W-digraphs is given in terms of subdigraphs for dihedral parabolic subgroups. Graph-theoretic properties of W-digraphs are established including, under certain assumptions, acyclicity. In case the Coxeter system is finite, a bound on the number of vertices of a connected W-digraph is obtained, and a graph-theoretic versi…
A canonical basis in the sense of Lusztig is a basis of a free module over a ring of Laurent polynomials that is invariant under a certain semilinear involution and is obtained from a fixed "standard basis" through a triangular base change matrix with polynomial entries whose constant terms equal the identity matrix. Among the better known examples of canonical bases are the Kazhdan-Lusztig basis of Iwahori-Hecke algebras, Lusztig's canonical basis of quantum groups and the Howlett-Yin basis of induced $W$-graph modules. This paper has two major theoretical goals: First to show that having bas…
