Gradients are natural first order differential operators depending on Riemannian metrics. The principal symbols of them are related to the enveloping algebra and higher Casimir elements. We give certain relations in the enveloping algebra, which induce not only identities for higher Casimir elements but also all Bochner-Weitzenböck formulas for gradients. As applications, we give some vanishing theorems.
We prove the Bochner-Weitzenböck formula for the (nonlinear) Laplacian on general Finsler manifolds and derive Li-Yau type gradient estimates as well as parabolic Harnack inequalities. Moreover, we deduce Bakry-Émery gradient estimates. All these estimates depend on lower bounds for the weighted flag Ricci tensor.
We discuss algebraic properties for the symbols of geometric first order differential operators on almost Hermitian manifolds and Kähler manifolds. Through study on the universal enveloping algebra and higher Casimir elements, we know algebraic relations for the symbols like the Clifford algebra. From the relations, we have all the Bochner identities for the operators. As applications, we have vanishing theorems, the Bochner-Weitzenböck formula, and eigenvalue estimates for the operators on Kähler manifolds.
In this paper we continue our recent study of a manifold endowed with a singular or regular distribution, determined as the image of the tangent bundle under a smooth endomorphism, and generalize Bochner's technique to the case of a distribution with a statistical type structure. Following the theory of statistical structures on Riemannian manifolds and construction of an almost Lie algebroid on a vector bundle, we define the modified statistical connection and exterior derivative on tensors. Then we introduce the Weitzenbock type curvature operator on tensors and derive the Bochner-Weitzenboc…
We establish a new algebraic characterization of sectional curvature bounds $\sec\geq k$ and $\sec\leq k$ using only curvature terms in the Weitzenböck formulae for symmetric $p$-tensors. By introducing a symmetric analogue of the Kulkarni-Nomizu product, we provide a simple formula for such curvature terms. We also give an application of the Bochner technique to closed $4$-manifolds with indefinite intersection form and $\sec>0$ or $\sec\geq0$, obtaining new insights into the Hopf Conjecture, without any symmetry assumptions.
We prove a family of new Weitzenböck formulas on a Riemannian foliation with totally geodesic leaves. These Weitzenböck formulas are naturally parametrized by the canonical variation of the metric. As a consequence, under natural geometric conditions, the horizontal Laplacian satisfies a generalized curvature dimension inequality. Among other things, this curvature dimension inequality implies Li-Yau estimates for positive solutions of the horizontal heat equation and a sub-Riemannian Bonnet-Myers compactness theorem whose assumptions only rely on the intrinsic geometry of the horizontal distr…
The main aim of this paper is to extend Bochner's technique to statistical structures. Other topics related to this technique are also introduced to the theory of statistical structures. It deals, in particular, with Hodge's theory, Bochner-Weitzenbock and Simon's type formulas. Moreover, a few global and local theorems on the geometry of statistical structures are proved, for instance, theorems saying that under some topological and geometrical conditions a statistical structure must be trivial. We also introduce a new concept of sectional curvature depending on statistical connections. On th…
In this paper, we consider a Riemannian manifold (M, g) endowed with a Riemannian flow and we study the curvature term in the Bochner-Weitzenb{ö}ck formula of the basic Laplacian on M. We prove that this term splits into two parts. The first part depends mainly on the curvature operator of the underlying manifold M and the second part is expressed in terms of the O'Neill tensor of the flow. After getting a lower bound for this term, depending on these two parts, we establish an eigenvalue estimate of the basic Laplacian on basic forms. We then discuss the limiting case of the estimate and prov…
In this paper, we propose a property which is a natural generalization of Kazhdan's property $(T)$ and prove that many, but not all, groups with property $(T)$ also have this property. Let $\G$ be a finitely generated group. One definition of $\G$ having property $(T)$ is that $H^1(\G,π,\fh)=0$ where the coefficient module $\fh$ is a Hilbert space and $π$ is a unitary representation of $\G$ on $\fh$. Here we allow more general coefficients and say that $\G$ has property $F \otimes H$ if $H^1(\G,π_1{\otimes}π_2,F{\otimes}\fh)=0$ if $(F,π_1)$ is any representation with $\dim(F)<\infty$ and $(\fh…
We study a new class of rank two sub-Riemannian manifolds encompassing Riemannian manifolds, CR manifolds with vanishing Webster-Tanaka torsion, orthonormal bundles over Riemannian manifolds, and graded nilpotent Lie groups of step two. These manifolds admit a canonical horizontal connection and a canonical sub-Laplacian. We construct on these manifolds an analogue of the Riemannian Ricci tensor and prove Bochner type formulas for the sub-Laplacian. As a consequence, it is possible to formulate on these spaces a sub-Riemannian analogue of the so-called curvature dimension inequality. Sub-Riema…
Contact Riemannian manifolds, with not necessarily integrable complex structures, are the generalization of pseudohermitian manifolds in CR geometry. The Tanaka-Webster-Tanno connection on such a manifold plays the role of Tanaka-Webster connection in the pseudohermitian case. We prove the contact Riemannian version of the pseudohermitian Bochner-type formula, and generalize the CR Lichnerowicz theorem about the sharp lower bound for the first nonzero eigenvalue of the sub-Laplacian to the contact Riemannnian case.
A classical theorem of Bochner asserts that the isometry group of a compact Riemannian manifold with negative Ricci curvature is finite. In this paper we give several extensions of Bochner's theorem by allowing "small" positive Ricci curvature.
In this article, we generalize the classical Bochner-Weitzenböck theorem for manifolds satisfying an integral pinching on the curvature. We obtain the vanishing of Betti numbers under integral pinching assumptions on the curvature, and characterize the equality case. In particular, we reprove and extend to higher degrees and higher dimensions a number of integral pinching results obtained by M. Gursky for four-dimensional closed manifolds.
We derive point-wise and integral rigidity/gap results for a closed manifold with harmonic Weyl curvature in any dimension. In particular, there is a generalization of Tachibana's theorem for non-negative curvature operator. The key ingredients are new Bochner-Weitzenböck-Lichnerowicz type formulas for the Weyl tensor, which are generalizations of identities in dimension four.
B. Y. Chen establish the relationship between the Ricci curvature and the squared mean curvature for submanifolds of Riemannian space form with arbitrary codimension. In this paper, we generalize the relationship between the Ricci curvature and the squared norm of mean curvature vector for submanifolds of Bochner Kahler manifolds.
B. Y. Chen established sharp inequalities between certain Riemannian invariants and the squared mean curvature for submanifolds in real space form as well as in complex space form. In this paper we generalize Chen inequalities for submanifolds of Bochner Kaehler manifolds. Moreover, we consider CR-warped product submanifolds of Bochner Kaehler manifold and establish an inequality for scalar curvature.
We prove a Bochner type vanishing theorem for compact complex manifolds $Y$ in Fujiki class $\mathcal C$, with vanishing first Chern class, that admit a cohomology class $[α] \in H^{1,1}(Y,\mathbb R)$ which is numerically effective (nef) and has positive self-intersection (meaning $\int_Y α^n \,>\, 0$, where $n\,=\,\dim_{\mathbb C} Y$). Using it, we prove that all holomorphic geometric structures of affine type on such a manifold $Y$ are locally homogeneous on a non-empty Zariski open subset. Consequently, if the geometric structure is rigid in the sense of Gromov, then the fundamental group o…
We consider the renormalized Bochner Laplacian acting on tensor powers of a positive line bundle on a compact symplectic manifold. We derive an explicit local formula for the spectral density function in terms of coefficients of the Riemannian metric and symplectic form.
We prove a geometrically meaningful stochastic representation of the derivative of the heat semigroup on sub-Riemannian manifolds with tranverse symmetries. This representation is obtained from the study of Bochner-Weitzenbock type formulas for sub-Laplacians on 1-forms. As a consequence, we prove new hypoelliptic heat semigroup gradient bounds under natural global geometric conditions. The results are new even in the case of the Heisenberg group which is the simplest example of a sub-Riemannian manifold with transverse symmetries.

The statistical analysis of data lying on a differentiable, locally Euclidean, manifold introduces a variety of challenges because the analogous measures to standard Euclidean statistics are local, that is only defined within a neighbourhood of each datapoint. This is because the curvature of the space means that the connection of Riemannian geometry is path dependent. In this paper we transfer the problem to Weitzenböck space, which has torsion, but not curvature, meaning that parallel transport is path independent, and rather than considering geodesics, it is natural to consider autoparallel…
We show that the group of smooth isometries of a complemented sub-Riemannian manifold form a Lie group and establish dimension estimates based on the torsion of the canonical connection. We explore the interaction of curvature and the structure of isometries and Killing fields and derive a Bochner formula for Killing fields. Sub-Riemannian generalizations of classical results of Bochner and Berger are established. We also apply our theory to common sub-categories of complemented sub-Riemannian geometries and show how to compute the isometry groups for several examples, including SO(n), SL(n) a…
We study analytic properties of harmonic maps from Riemannian polyhedra into CAT($κ$) spaces for $κ\in\{0,1\}$. Locally, on each top-dimensional face of the domain, this amounts to studying harmonic maps from smooth domains into CAT($κ$) spaces. We compute a target variation formula that captures the curvature bound in the target, and use it to prove an $L^p$ Liouville-type theorem for harmonic maps from admissible polyhedra into convex CAT($κ$) spaces. Another consequence we derive from the target variation formula is the Eells-Sampson Bochner formula for CAT(1) targets.
We derive some elliptic differential inequalities from the Weitzenböck formulas for the traceless Ricci tensor of a Kähler manifold with constant scalar curvature and the Bochner tensor of a Kähler-Einstein manifold respectively. Using elliptic estimates and maximum principle, some $L^p$ and $L^\infty $ pinching results are established to characterize Kähler-Einstein manifolds among Kähler manifolds with constant scalar curvature, and others are given to characterize complex space forms among Kähler-Einstein manifolds. Finally, these pinching results may be combined to characterize complex spa…
A formal treatment of Killing 1-form and 2-Killing 1-form on Riemannian Poisson manifold, Riemannian Poisson warped product space are presented. In this way, we obtain Bochner type result on compact Riemannian Poisson manifold, compact Riemannian Poisson warped product space for Killing 1-form and 2-Killing 1-form. Finally, we give the characterization of a 2-Killing 1-form on $(\mathbb{R}^2,g,Π)$.
As an application of the Bochner formula, we prove that if a $2$-dimensional Riemannian manifold admits a non-trivial smooth tangent vector field $X$ then its Gauss curvature is the divergence of a tangent vector field, constructed from $X$, defined on the open subset out the zeroes of $X$. Thanks to the Whitney embedding theorem and a standard approximation procedure, as a consequence, we give a new proof of the following well-known fact: if on an orientable, connected and compact $2$-dimensional smooth manifold there exists a continuous tangent vector field with no zeroes, then the manifold …
We present a rigorous homogenization theorem for distributed dislocations. We construct a sequence of locally-flat Riemannian manifolds with dislocation-type singularities. We show that this sequence converges, as the dislocations become denser, to a flat non-singular Weitzenböck manifold, i.e. a flat manifold endowed with a metrically-consistent connection with zero curvature and non-zero torsion. In the process, we introduce a new notion of convergence of Weitzenböck manifolds, which is relevant to this class of homogenization problems.
We introduce an appropriate formalism in order to study conformal Killing (symmetric) tensors on Riemannian manifolds. We reprove in a simple way some known results in the field and obtain several new results, like the classification of conformal Killing $2$-tensors on Riemannian products of compact manifolds, Weitzenböck formulas leading to non-existence results, and construct various examples of manifolds with conformal Killing tensors.
We prove that under certain conditions on the mean curvature and on the Kaehler angles, a compact submanifold M of real dimension 2n, immersed into a Kaehler-Einstein manifold N of complex dimension 2n, must be either a complex or a Lagrangian submanifold of N, or have constant Kaehler angle, depending on n=1, n=2, or n \geq 3, and the sign of the scalar curvature of N. These results generalize to non-minimal submanifolds some known results for minimal submanifolds. Our main tool is a Bochner-type technique involving a formula on the Laplacian of a symmetric function on the Kaehler angles and …
This report attempts a clean presentation of the theory of harmonic maps from complex and Kähler manifolds to Riemannian manifolds. After reviewing the theory of harmonic maps between Riemannian manifolds initiated by Eells--Sampson and the Bochner technique, we specialize to Kähler domains and introduce pluriharmonic maps. We prove a refined Bochner formula due to Siu and Sampson and its main consequences, such as the strong rigidity results of Siu. We also recount the applications to symmetric spaces of noncompact type and their relation to Mostow rigidity. Finally, we explain the key role o…
We reconcile between two classical models of edge-dislocations in solids. The first model, dating from the early 1900s models isolated edge-dislocations as line singularities in locally-Euclidean manifolds. The second model, dating from the 1950s, models continuously-distributed edge-dislocations as smooth manifolds endowed with non-symmetric affine connections (equivalently, endowed with torsion fields). In both models, the solid is modeled as a Weitzenböck manifold. We prove, using a weak notion of convergence [KM15], that the second model can be obtained rigorously as a homogenization limit…
We study harmonic maps from Riemannian manifolds into arbitrary non-positively curved and CAT(-1) metric spaces. First we discuss the domain variation formula with special emphasis on the error terms. Expanding higher order terms of this and other formulas in terms of curvature, we prove an analogue of the Eels-Sampson Bochner formula in this more general setting. In particular, we show that harmonic maps from spaces of non-negative Ricci curvature into non-positively curved spaces have subharmonic energy density. When the domain is compact the energy density is constant, and if the domain has…
We study different notions of Riemannian curvatures: The $p$-curvatures which interpolate between the scalar curvature and the sectional curvature, the Gauss-Bonnet-Weyl curvatures form another interpolation from the scalar curvature to the Gauss-Bonnet integrand. We bring out the $(p,q)$-curvatures, which incorporate all the previous curvatures. We then examine the curvature term which appears in the classical Weitzenböck formula. We also study the positivity properties of the $p$-curvatures, the second Gauss-Bonnet-Weyl curvature, the Einstein curvature and the isotropic curvature.
We prove the equivalence of the curvature-dimension bounds of Lott-Sturm-Villani (via entropy and optimal transport) and of Bakry--Émery (via energy and Γ_2$-calculus) in complete generality for infinitesimally Hilbertian metric measure spaces. In particular, we establish the full Bochner inequality on such metric measure spaces. Moreover, we deduce new contraction bounds for the heat flow on Riemannian manifolds and on mms in terms of the $L^2$-Wasserstein distance.
Killing forms on Riemannian manifolds are differential forms whose covariant derivative is totally skew-symmetric. We show that on a compact manifold with holonomy G2 or Spin7 any Killing form has to be parallel. The main tool is a universal Weitzenboeck formula. We show how such a formula can be obtained for any given holonomy group and any representation defining a vector bundle.
Using Weitzenböck techniques on any compact Riemannian spin manifold we derive inequalities that involve a real parameter and join the eigenvalues of the Dirac operator with curvature terms. The discussion of these inequalities yields vanishing theorems for the kernel of the Dirac operator $D$ and lower bounds for the spectrum of $D^2$ if the curvature satisfies certain conditions.
In this paper, we study the existence of various harmonic maps from Hermitian manifolds to Kaehler, Hermitian and Riemannian manifolds respectively. By using refined Bochner formulas on Hermitian (possibly non-Kaehler) manifolds, we derive new rigidity results on Hermitian harmonic maps from compact Hermitian manifolds to Riemannian manifolds, and we also obtain the complex analyticity of pluri-harmonic maps from compact complex manifolds to compact Kaehler manifolds (and Riemannian manifolds) with non-degenerate curvatures, which are analogous to several fundamental results in [28,Siu], [14,J…
In this paper, we prove several Liouville-type theorems on the non-existence of Killing-Yano tensors, Killing tensors, and harmonic symmetric tensors on Hadamard manifolds and, in particular, on Riemannian symmetric spaces of non-compact type. These theorems supplement the well-known vanishing theorems for the above tensors, obtained using the Bochner technique for compact Riemannian manifolds. In turn, the proofs of our theorems will use well-known Liouville-type theorems on the non-existence of subharmonic and harmonic functions on complete Riemannian manifolds, which we have partially modif…
In this paper, we construct a family of Berezin-Toeplitz type quantizations of a compact symplectic manifold. For this, we choose a Riemannian metric on the manifold such that the associated Bochner Laplacian has the same local model at each point (this is slightly more general than in almost-Kähler quantization). Then the spectrum of the Bochner Laplacian on high tensor powers $L^p$ of the prequantum line bundle $L$ asymptotically splits into clusters of size ${\mathcal O}(p^{3/4})$ around the points $pΛ$, where $Λ$ is an eigenvalue of the model operator (which can be naturally called a Landa…
Walczak formula is a very nice tool for understanding the geometry of a Riemannian manifold equipped with two orthogonal complementary distributions. Svensson [7] has shown that this formula simplifies to a Bochner type formula when we are dealing with Kähler manifolds and holomorphic (integrable) distributions. Here, with adapted notions as invariant distribution and (contact) holomorphicity, we derive the special form of the Walczack formula on a Sasaki manifold. Then we apply a standard Bochner argument in the study of (contact) holomorphic distributions. Some other applications for (pseudo…
Riemannian manifolds with non-zero Killing spinors are Einstein manifolds. Klaus Kröncke proved that all complete Riemannian manifolds with imaginary Killing spinors are (linearly) strictly stable in \cite{Kro15}. In this paper, we obtain a new proof for this stability result by using a Bochner type formula in \cite{DWW05} and \cite{Wan91}. Moreover, existence of real Killing spinors is closely related to the Sasaki-Einstein structure. A regular Sasaki-Einstein manifold is essentially the total space of a certain principal $S^{1}$-bundle over a Kähler-Einstein manifold. We prove that if the ba…
In this paper, we study the Sobolev regularity of solutions to nonlinear second order elliptic equations with super-linear first-order terms on Riemannian manifolds, complemented with Neumann boundary conditions, when the source term of the equation belongs to a Lebesgue space, under various integrability regimes. Our method is based on an integral refinement of the Bochner's identity, and leads to "semilinear Calderón-Zygmund" type results. Applications to the problem of smoothness of solutions to Mean Field Games systems with Neumann boundary conditions posed on convex domains of the Euclide…
A parallel lightlike vector field on a Lorentzian manifold $X$ naturally defines a foliation $\mathcal{F}$ of codimension one. If either all leaves of $\mathcal{F}$ are compact or $X$ itself is compact admitting a compact leaf and the (transverse) Ricci curvature is non-negative then a Bochner type argument implies that the first Betti number of $X$ is bounded by $1 \leq b_{1} \leq \dim X$ if $X$ is compact and $0 \leq b_{1} \leq \dim X -1$ otherwise. We show that these bounds are optimal and depending on the holonomy of $X$ we obtain further results. Finally, we classify the holonomy represen…
We derive sub-Riemannian Ricci curvature tensor for sub-Riemannian manifolds. We provide examples including the Heisenberg group, displacement group, and Martinet sub-Riemannian structure with arbitrary weighted volumes, in which we establish analytical bounds for sub-Riemannian curvature dimension bounds and log-Sobolev inequalities. {These bounds can be used to establish the entropy dissipation results for sub-Riemannian drift diffusion processes on a compact spatial domain, in term of $L_1$ distance.} Our derivation of Ricci curvature is based on generalized Gamma $z$ calculus and $z$--Boch…
