In [5] Herzlich proved a new positive mass theorem for Riemannian 3-manifolds $(N, g)$ whose mean curvature of the boundary allows some positivity. In this paper we study what happens to the limit case of the theorem when, at a point of the boundary, the smallest positive eigenvalue of the Dirac operator of the boundary is strictly larger than one-half of the mean curvature (in this case the mass $m(g)$ must be strictly positive). We prove that the mass is bounded from below by a positive constant $c(g), m(g) \geq c(g)$, and the equality $m(g) = c(g)$ holds only if, outside a compact set, $(N, g)$ is conformally flat and the scalar curvature vanishes. The constant $c(g)$ is uniquely determined by the metric $g$ via a Dirac-harmonic spinor.
In this short note we present some remarks concerning anti-quasi-Sasakian manifolds. Some proofs of their basic properties are simplified. We also discuss some canonical invariant distributions which exist on every anti-quasi-Sasakian manifold.
The author reviews his results on locally compact homogeneous spaces with inner metric, in particular, homogeneous manifolds with inner metric. The latter are isometric to homogeneous (sub-)Finslerian manifolds; under some additional conditions they are isometric to homogeneous (sub)-Riemannian manifolds. The class $Ω$ of all locally compact homogeneous spaces with inner metric is supplied with some metric $d_{BGH}$ such that 1) $(Ω,d_{BGH})$ is a complete metric space; 2) a sequences in $(Ω,d_{BGH})$ is converging if and only if it is converging in Gromov-Hausdorff sense; 3) the subclasses $\…
We establish the equivalence between the family of closed uniformly regular Riemannian manifolds and the class of complete manifolds with bounded geometry.
This note computes the "renormalized volume" and a renormalizedGauss-Bonnet-Chern formula for the Euler characteristic ofasymptotically complex hyperbolic Einstein (in short: ACHE)4-manifolds.
We shall prove the universality of the curvature identity for the 4-dimensional Riemannian manifold using a different method than that used by Gilkey, Park, and Sekigawa \cite{GPS}.
We give a characterization of relative Ding stable toric Fano manifolds in terms of the behavior of the modified Ding functional. We call the corresponding behavior of the modified Ding functional the pseudo-boundedness from below. We also discuss the pseudo-boundedness of the Ding / Mabuchi functional of general Fano manifolds.
We give explicit harmonic representatives of Dolbeault cohomology of Oeljeklaus-Toma manifolds and show that they are geometrically Dolbeault formal. We also give explicit harmonic representatives of Bott-Chern cohomology of Oeljeklaus-Toma manifolds of type $(s,1)$ and study the Angella-Tomassini inequality.
We observe inequalities involving the Herzlich volume of a 4-dimensional asymptotically complex hyperbolic Einstein manifold and its Euler characteristic provided the metrics is either Kaehler or selfdual. In the selfdual case we have to assume furthermore that the Kronheimer-Mrowka invariant is non vanishing.
In this paper, we give an optimal inequality relating the relative Yamabe invariant of a certain compactification of a conformally compact Poin-car{é}-Einstein manifold with the Yamabe invariant of its boundary at infinity. As an application, we obtain an elementary proof of the rigidity of the hyper-bolic space as the only conformally compact Poincar{é}-Einstein manifold with the round sphere as its conformal infinity.
We study the quaternionic Monge-Ampère equation on HKT manifolds admitting an HKT foliation having corank 4. We show that in this setting the quaternionic Monge-Ampère equation has always a unique solution for every basic datum. This approach includes the study of the equation on SU(3).
An important open question in G$_{2}$ geometry concerns whether or not a compact seven-manifold can support an exact G$_{2}$-Structure. Given the significance of this question we initiate a study of exact G$_{2}$-Structures on compact manifolds. We focus on exact G$_2$-Structures subject to no additional constraints but we also consider the relationship between the exact condition and other conditions for closed G$_{2}$-Structures such as the Extremally Ricci-Pinched and Laplacian Soliton conditions.
In [21], the authors initiated the study of quasi generalized CR (QGCR)-null submanifolds. In this paper, attention is drawn to some distributions on ascreen QGCR-null submanifolds in an indefinite nearly cosymplectic manifold. We characterize totally umbilical and irrotational ascreen QGCR-null submanifolds. We finally discuss the geometric effects of geodesity conditions on such submanifold.
One of the main results of the paper arXiv:1108.0967 by Gross-Tosatti-Zhang establishes estimates on the collapsing of Ricci-flat Kahler metrics on holomorphic torus fibrations. We remove a projectivity assumption from these estimates and simplify some of the underlying analysis.
This article is based on a lecture at the Journal of Differential Geometry Conference, Harvard 2017. We discuss closed and torsion-free $G_{2}$-structures on a 7-manifold with boundary, with prescribed $3$-form on the boundary. Much of the article is based on an observation that there is an intrinsic notion of "mean convexity" for such boundary data. When the boundary data is mean convex, classical arguments from Riemannian geometry can be applied. Another theme is a connection with the maximal submanifold equation, in spaces of indefinite signature.
In the present paper, we show that the geometry of a screen integrable null hypersurface can be generated from an isometric immersion of a leaf of its screen distribution into the ambient space. We prove, under certain geometric conditions, that such immersions are contained in semi-Euclidean spheres or hyperbolic spaces, and the underlying null hypersurfaces are necessarily umbilic and screen totally umbilic. Where necessary, examples have been given to illustrate the main ideas.
This article is an exposition of four loosely related remarks on the geometry of Finsler manifolds with constant positive flag curvature. <p> The first remark is that there is a canonical Kahler structure on the space of geodesics of such a manifold. <p> The second remark is that there is a natural way to construct a (not necessarily complete) Finsler n-manifold of constant positive flag curvature out of a hypersurface in suitably general position in complex projective n-space. <p> The third remark is that there is a description of the Finsler metrics of constant curvature on the 2-sphere in t…
We study the geometric properties of the base manifold for the unit tangent bundle satisfying the $η$-Einstein condition with the standard contact metric structure. One of the main theorems is that the unit tangent bundle of 4-dimensional Einstein manifold, equipped with the canonical contact metric structure, is $η$-Einstein manifold if and only if base manifold is the space of constant sectional curvature 1 or 2.
We prove that compact quaternionic-Kähler manifolds of positive scalar curvature admit no almost complex structure, even in the weak sense, except for the complex Grassmannians $Gr_2(C^{n+2})$. We also prove that irreducible inner symmetric spaces $M^{4n}$ of compact type are not weakly complex, except for spheres and Hermitian symmetric spaces.
We find necessary and sufficient conditions for the bi-Legendrian connection $\nabla$ associated to a bi-Legendrian structure $(\cal F,\cal G)$ on a contact metric manifold $(M,ϕ,ξ,η,g)$ being a metric connection and then we give conditions ensuring that $\nabla$ coincides with the (generalized) Tanaka-Webster connection of $(M,ϕ,ξ,η,g)$. Using these results, we give some interpretations of the Tanaka-Webster connection and we study the interactions between the Tanaka-Webster, the bi-Legendrian and the Levi Civita connection in a Sasakian manifold.
The standard Bonnet-Myers theorem says that if the Ricci scalar of a Riemannian manifold is bounded below by a positive number, then the manifold is compact. Moreover, a bound of its diameter is pointed out. The theorem was extended to Finsler manifolds. In this paper we prove that if a certain condition on the average of the Ricci scalar holds, then the Finsler manifold M is compact if the Ricci scalar is bounded above by the same positive number. An upper bound of the diameter is also found. With no condition on Ricci scalar itself but with a different one on its average, we find that the Fi…
In this paper, we prove that the class of bi-f-harmonic maps and that of f-biharmonic maps from a conformal manifold of dimension not equal to 2 are the same (Theorem 1.1). We also give several results on nonexistence of proper bi-f-harmonic maps and f-biharmonic maps from complete Riemannian manifolds into nonpositively curved Riemannian manifolds. These include: any bi-f-harmonic map from a compact manifold into a non-positively curved manifold is f-harmonic (Theorem 1.6), and any f-biharmonic (respectively, bi-f-harmonic) map with bounded f and bounded f-bienrgy (respectively, bi-f-energy) …
We provide a general Böchner type formula which enables us to prove some rigidity results for $V$-static spaces. In particular, we show that an $n$-dimensional positive static triple with connected boundary and positive scalar curvature must be isometric to the standard hemisphere, provided that the metric has zero radial Weyl curvature and satisfies a suitable pinching condition. Moreover, we classify $V$-static spaces with non-negative sectional curvature.
We study the spectrum of the Dirac operator $D$ on pseudo-Riemannian spin manifolds of signature $(p,q)$, considered as an unbounded operator in the Hilbert space $L^2_ξ(S)$. The definition of $L^2_ξ(S)$ involves the choice of a $p$-dimensional time-like subbundle $ξ\subset TM$. We establish a sufficient criterion for the spectra of $D$ induced by two maximal time-like subbundles $ξ_1,ξ_2\subset TM$ to be equal. If the base manifold $M$ is compact, the spectrum does not depend on $ξ$ at all. We then proceed by explicitely computing the full spectrum of $D$ for $\mathbb R^{p,q}$, the flat torus…
We discuss folklore statements about distance functions in manifolds with two sided bounded curvature. The topics include regularity, subsets of positive reach and the cut locus.
In this paper, we prove that a compact quasi-Einstein manifold $(M^n,\,g,\,u)$ of dimension $n\geq 4$ with boundary $\partial M,$ nonnegative sectional curvature and zero radial Weyl tensor is either isometric, up to scaling, to the standard hemisphere $\Bbb{S}^n_+,$ or $g=dt^{2}+ψ^{2}(t)g_{L}$ and $u=u(t),$ where $g_{L}$ is Einstein with nonnegative Ricci curvature. A similar classification result is obtained by assuming a fourth-order vanishing condition on the Weyl tensor. Moreover, a new example is presented in order to justify our assumptions. In addition, the case of dimension $n=3$ is a…
Totally geodesically embeddings of infinitely many closed 7-manifolds into 13-dimensional positively curved closed Riemannian manifolds are constructed. The problems of computing pinching constants and existence of other totally geodesical embeddings are discussed.
In this paper, we shall give a new upper diameter estimate for complete Riemannian manifolds in the case that the Bakry-Émery Ricci curvature has a positive lower bound and the norm of the potential function has an upper bound. Our diameter estimate improves previous ones obtained by Wei and Wylie (J. Differential Geom. 83, 377--405, 2009) and Limoncu (Math. Z. 271, 715--722, 2012). As an application, we shall give an upper diameter bound for compact Ricci solitons in terms of the maximum value of the scalar curvature. By using such a diameter bound, we shall provide some new sufficient condit…
We describe some natural relations connecting contact geometry, classical Monge-Ampere equations and theory of singularities of solutions to nonlinear PDEs. They reveal the hidden meaning of Monge-Ampere equations and sheds new light on some aspects of contact geometry.
The Serre-Swan theorem provides the link between projective modules of finite rank and vector bundles over compact manifolds, and plays a prominent role in non-commutative geometry. Its extension to non-compact manifolds is discussed.
In this short note we survey some results about the fundamental group of a compact negatively curved manifold. In particular, we review a theorem of Gusevskij, it states that the fundamental group of a compact negatively curved manifold does not belong to $\mathcal{C},$ where $\mathcal{C}$ is the smallest class of groups that contains all amenable groups and is closed under free products and finite extensions.
We show that the de Rham theorem, interpreted as the isomorphism between distributional de Rham cohomology and simplicial homology in the dual dimension for a simplicial decomposition of a compact oriented manifold, is a straightforward consequence of elementary properties of currents. The explicit construction of this isomorphism extends to other cases, such as relative and absolute cohomology spaces of manifolds with corners.
This article is mostly a writeup of two talks, the first given in the Besse Seminar at the Ecole Polytechnique in 1998 and the second given at the 2000 International Congress on Differential Geometry in memory of Alfred Gray in Bilbao, Spain. It begins with a discussion of basic geometry of almost complex 6-manifolds. In particular, I define a 2-parameter family of intrinsic first-order functionals on almost complex structures on 6-manifolds and compute their Euler-Lagrange equations. It also includes a discussion of a natural generalization of holomorphic bundles over complex manifolds to the…
We provide an upper bound for the Gromov width of compact homogeneous Hodge manifolds $(M, ω)$ with $b_2(M)=1$. As an application we obtain an upper bound on the Seshadri constant $ε(L)$ where $L$ is the ample line bundle on $M$ such that $c_1(L)=[\fracωπ]$.
In this paper we provide a positive answer to a conjecture due to A. J. Di Scala, A. Loi, H. Hishi (see [3, Conjecture 1]) claiming that a simply-connected homogeneous Kähler manifold M endowed with an integral Kähler form $μω$, admits a holomorphic isometric immersion in the complex projective space, for a suitable $μ>0$. This result has two corollaries which extend to homogeneous Kähler manifolds the results obtained by the authors in [8] and in [12] for homogeneous bounded domains.
In this paper, we mainly study eigenvalue problems of p-Laplacian on domains with an interior hole. Firstly we prove Faber-Krahn-type inequalities, and Cheng-type eigenvalue comparison theorems on manifolds. Secondly, we prove a comparison theorem for eigenvalues with inner Dirichlet and outer Neumann boundary in minimal submanifolds in Euclidean space. Lastly we give a sharp estimate of the eigenvalue (with outer Dirichlet and inner Neumann boundaries) in terms of the Dircihlet eigenvalue, and also we give an upper bound of the eigenvalue with inner Dirichlet and outer Neumann problems by the…
Ejiri gave a negative answer to a conjecture of Lichnerowicz concerning Riemannian manifolds with constant scalar curvature admitting an infinitesimal non isometric conformal transformation. With this aim he constructed a warped product of a circle of lenght $T$ and a compact manifold. But he omitted in his analysis the condition that $T$ must to be big enough. Here we give an explicit sharp bound $T_0 < T$ that will make the proof complete. Our presentation is self-contained and mainly uses bifurcation techniques. Moreover, we show that there are other such examples and contribute some result…
Alexandrov's theorem asserts that spheres are the only closed embedded constant mean curvature hypersurfaces in space forms. In this paper, we consider Alexandrov's theorem in warped product manifolds and prove a rigidity result in the spirit of Alexandrov's theorem. Our approach generalizes the proofs of Reilly and Ros and, under more restrictive assumptions, it provides an alternative proof of a recent theorem of Brendle.
In this paper we have obtained evolution of some geometric quantities on a compact Riemannian manifold $M^n$ when the metric is a Yamabe soliton. Using these quantities we have obtained bound on the soliton constant. We have proved that the commutator of two soliton vector fields with the same metric in a given conformal class produces a Killing vector field. Also it is shown that the soliton vector field becomes a geodesic vector field if and only if the manifold is of constant curvature.
We show that Chern-Weil theory for tensor bundles over manifolds is a consequence of the existence of natural closed differential forms on total spaces of torsion free connections on frame bundles.
We prove that the total CR $Q$-curvature vanishes for any compact strictly pseudoconvex CR manifold. We also prove the formal self-adjointness of the $P^\prime$-operator and the CR invariance of the total $Q^\prime$-curvature for any pseudo-Einstein manifold without the assumption that it bounds a Stein manifold.
