The author reviews his results on locally compact homogeneous spaces with inner metric, in particular, homogeneous manifolds with inner metric. The latter are isometric to homogeneous (sub-)Finslerian manifolds; under some additional conditions they are isometric to homogeneous (sub)-Riemannian manifolds. The class $Ω$ of all locally compact homogeneous spaces with inner metric is supplied with some metric $d_{BGH}$ such that 1) $(Ω,d_{BGH})$ is a complete metric space; 2) a sequences in $(Ω,d_{BGH})$ is converging if and only if it is converging in Gromov-Hausdorff sense; 3) the subclasses $\mathfrak{M}$ of homogeneous manifolds with inner metric and $\mathfrak{LG}$ of connected Lie groups with left-invariant Finslerian metric are everywhere dense in $(Ω,d_{BGH}).$ It is given a metric characterization of Carnot groups with left-invariant sub-Finslerian metric. At the end are described homogeneous manifolds such that any invariant inner metric on any of them is Finslerian.
We prove that under some purely algebraic conditions every locally homogeneous structure modelled on some homogeneous space is induced by a locally homogeneous structure modelled on a different homogeneous space.
We study locally homogeneous rigid geometric structures on surfaces. We show that a locally homogeneous projective connection on a compact surface is flat. We also show that a locally homogeneous unimodular affine connection on a two dimensional torus is complete and, up to a finite cover, homogeneous. Let $\nabla$ be a unimodular real analytic affine connection on a real analytic compact connected surface $M$. If $\nabla$ is locally homogeneous on a nontrivial open set in $M$, we prove that $\nabla$ is locally homogeneous on all of $M$.
In this paper, we study the positive cross curvature flow on locally homogeneous 3-manifolds. We describe the long time behavior of these flows. We combine this with earlier results concerning the asymptotic behavior of the negative cross curvature flow to describe the two sided behavior of maximal solutions of the cross curvature flow on locally homogeneous 3-manifolds. We show that, typically, the positive cross curvature flow on locally homogeneous 3-manifold produce an Heisenberg type sub-Riemannian geometry.
The main purpose of this paper is to determine the admissible forms of the sectional curvature operator on a three-dimensional locally homogeneous Lorentzian manifolds.
We study the quasi-convergence equivalence of some families of metrics on locally homogeneous closed 4-manifolds with trivial isotropy group, and identify the dimension of each equivalence class under certain conditions.
We prove various classification results for homogeneous locally conformally symplectic manifolds. In particular, we show that a homogeneous locally conformally Kaehler manifold of a reductive group is of Vaisman type, if the normalizer of the isotropy group is compact. We also show that such a result does not hold in the case of noncompact normalizer and determine all left-invariant locally conformally Kaehler structures on reductive Lie groups.
We study three different topologies on the moduli space $\mathscr{H}^{\rm loc}_m$ of equivariant isometry classes of $m$-dimensional locally homogeneous Riemannian spaces. As an application, we provide the first examples of locally homogeneous spaces converging to a limit space in the pointed $\mathcal{C}^{k,α}$-topology, for some $k>1$, which do not admit any convergent subsequence in the pointed $\mathcal{C}^{k+1}$-topology.
It is known that automorphism group $G$ of a compact homogeneous locally conformally Kähler manifold $M=G/H$ has at least a 1-dimensional center. We prove that the center of $G$ is at most 2-dimensional, and that if its dimension is 2, then $M$ is Vaisman and isometric to a mapping torus of an isometry of a homogeneous Sasakian manifold.
We ask a general question: what are locally homogeneous compact pseudo-Riemannian Einstein manifolds? We show that any standard compact Clifford-Klein form of a simple non-compact Lie group admits at least one Einstein metric. We conjecture that these are basically the only possible locally homogeneous Einstein pseudo-Riemannian compact manifolds using T. Kobayashi's conjecture as a guiding principle.
Ambrose and Singer characterized connected, simply-connected and complete homogeneous Riemannian manifolds as Riemannian manifolds admitting a metric connection such that its curvature and torsion are parallel. The aim of this paper is to extend Ambrose-Singer Theorem to the general framework of locally homogeneous pseudo-Riemannian manifolds. In addition we study under which conditions a locally homogeneous pseudo-Riemannian manifold can be recovered from the curvature and their covariant derivatives at some point up to finite order. The same problem is tackled in the presence of a geometric …
In this paper we study backward Ricci flow of locally homogeneous geometries of $4$-manifolds which admit compact quotients. We describe the long-term behavior of each class and show that many of the classes exhibit the same behavior near the singular time. In most cases, these manifolds converge to a sub-Riemannian geometry after suitable rescaling.
We study holomorphic locally homogeneous geometric structures modelled on line bundles over the projective line. We classify these structures on primary Hopf surfaces. We write out the developing map and holonomy morphism of each of these structures explicitly on each primary Hopf surface.
We give a new short self-contained proof of the result of Opozda [B. Opozda, A classification of locally homogeneous connections on 2-dimensional manifolds, Differential Geom. Appl. 21 (2004), 173-198.] classifying the locally homogeneous torsion free affine surfaces and the extension to the case of surfaces with torsion due to Arias-Marco and Kowalski [T. Arias-Marco and O. Kowalski, Classification of locally homogeneous linear connections with arbitrary torsion on 2-dimensional manifolds, Monatsh. Math. 153 (2008), 1-18.]. Our approach rests on a direct analysis of the affine Killing equatio…
We prove the existence and uniqueness of geometric models of local isometry classes of locally homogeneous spaces with sectional curvature $|\operatorname{sec}|\leq 1$. Moreover, we show that the set of geometric models is compact in the pointed $\mathcal{C}^{1,α}$-topology.
We describe the structure of the Ricci tensor on a locally homogeneous Lorentzian gradient Ricci soliton. In the non-steady case, we show the soliton is rigid in dimensions three and four. In the steady case, we give a complete classification in dimension three.
In this paper, we study the backward Ricci flow on locally homogeneous 3-manifolds. We describe the long time behavior and show that, typically and after a proper re-scaling, there is convergence to a sub-Riemannian geometry. A similar behavior was observed by the authors in the case of the cross curvature flow.
Let $M$ be a differentiable manifold and $K$ a Lie group. A locally homogeneous triple with structure group $K$ on $M$ is a triple $(g, P\stackrel{p}{\to} M,A)$, where $p:P\to M$ is a principal $K$-bundle on $M$, $g$ is Riemannian metric on $M$, and $A$ is connection on $P$ such that the following locally homogeneity condition is satisfied: for every two points $x$, $x'\in M$ there exists an isometry $φ:U\to U'$ between open neighborhoods $U\ni x$, $U'\ni x'$ with $φ(x)=x'$, and a $φ$-covering bundle isomorphism $Φ:P_U\to P_{U'}$ such that $Φ^*(A_{U'})=A_U$. If $(g,P\stackrel{p}{\to} M,A)$ is …
We construct locally homogeneous 6-dimensional nearly Kähler manifolds as quotients of homogeneous nearly Kähler manifolds $M$ by freely acting finite subgroups of $Aut_0(M)$. We show that non-trivial such groups do only exists if $M=S^3\times S^3$. In that case we classify all freely acting subgroups of $Aut_0(M)=SU (2) \times SU (2) \times SU (2)$ of the form $A\times B$, where $A\subset SU (2) \times SU (2)$ and $B\subset SU (2)$.
We examine the topology of various spaces of locally homogeneous affine manifolds which arise from the classification result of Opozda [B. Opozda, A classification of locally homogeneous connections on 2-dimensional manifolds, Differential Geom. Appl. 21 (2004), 173-198.] as orbits of the action of $GL(2,\mathbb{R})$ (Type $\mathcal{A}$) and the $ax+b$ group (Type $\mathcal{B}$). We determine the topology of the spaces of Type $\mathcal{A}$ models in relation to the rank of the Ricci tensor. We determine the topology of the spaces of Type $\mathcal{B}$ models which either are flat or where the…
It is shown that the geometry of locally homogeneous multisymplectic manifolds (that is, smooth manifolds equipped with a closed nondegenerate form of degree > 1, which is locally homogeneous of degree k with respect to a local Euler field) is characterized by their automorphisms. Thus, locally homogeneous multisymplectic manifolds extend the family of classical geometries possessing a similar property: symplectic, volume and contact. The proof of the first result relies on the characterization of invariant differential forms with respect to the graded Lie algebra of infinitesimal automorphism…
Let $λ(t)$ be the first eigenvalue of $-Δ+aR\, (a>0)$ under the backward Ricci flow on locally homogeneous 3-manifolds, where $R$ is the scalar curvature. In the Bianchi case, we get the upper and lower bounds of $λ(t)$. In particular, we show that when the the backward Ricci flow converges to a sub-Riemannian geometry after a proper re-scaling, $λ^{+}(t)$ approaches zero, where $λ^{+}(t)=\max\{λ(t),0\}$.
Let $\mathcal{M}$ be a Type $\mathcal{A}$ affine surface. We show that $\mathcal{M}$ is linearly strongly projectively flat. We use the quasi-Einstein equation together with the condition that $\mathcal{M}$ is strongly projectively flat to examine to examine the geodesic completeness of $\mathcal{M}$.
A linear connection on a Lie algebroid is called a Cartan connection if it is suitably compatible with the Lie algebroid structure. Here we show that a smooth connected manifold $M$ is locally homogeneous - i.e., admits an atlas of charts modeled on some homogeneous space $G/H$ - if and only if there exists a transitive Lie algebroid over $M$ admitting a flat Cartan connection that is 'geometrically closed'. It is shown how the torsion and monodromy of the connection determine the particular form of $G/H$. Under an additional completeness hypothesis, local homogeneity becomes global homogeneit…
We discuss the Ricci flow on homogeneous 4-manifolds. After classifying these manifolds, we note that there are families of initial metrics such that we can diagonalize them and the Ricci flow preserves the diagonalization. We analyze the long time behavior of these families. We find that if a solution exists for all time, then the flow exhibits a type III singularity in the sense of Hamilton.
In this paper, we classify the compact locally homogeneous non-gradient $m$-quasi Einstein 3-manifolds. Along the way, we prove that given a compact quotient of a Lie group of any dimension that is $m$-quasi Einstein, the potential vector field $X$ must be left invariant and Killing. We also classify the nontrivial $m$-quasi Einstein metrics that are a compact quotient of be the product of two Einstein metrics. We also show that $S^1$ is the only compact manifold of any dimension which admits a metric which is nontrivially $m$-quasi Einstein and Einstein.
We classify the affine connections on compact orientable surfaces for which the pseudogroup of local isometries acts transitively. We prove that such a connection is either torsion-free and flat, the Levi-Civita connection of a Riemannian metric of constant curvature or the quotient of a translation-invariant connection in the plane.
We show that every closed, locally homogeneous Riemannian manifold with positive simplicial volume must be homeomorphic to a locally symmetric space of non-compact type.
We classify those curvature-homogeneous Einstein four-manifolds, of all metric signatures, which have a complex-diagonalizable curvature operator. They all turn out to be locally homogeneous. More precisely, any such manifold must be either locally symmetric or locally isometric to a suitable Lie group with a left-invariant metric. To show this we explicitly determine the possible local-isometry types of manifolds that have the properties named above, but are not locally symmetric.
In this paper, we study the evolving behaviors of the first eigenvalue of Laplace-Beltrami operator under the normalized backward Ricci flow, construct various quantities which are monotonic under the backward Ricci flow and get upper and lower bounds. We prove that in cases where the backward Ricci flow converges to a sub-Riemannian geometry after a proper rescaling, the eigenvalue evolves toward zero.
This project serves to analyze the behavior of Ricci Flow in five dimensional manifolds. Ricci Flow was introduced by Richard Hamilton in 1982 and was an essential tool in proving the Geometrization and Poincare Conjectures. In general, Ricci Flow is a nonlinear PDE whose solutions are rather difficult to calculate; however, in a homogeneous manifold, the Ricci Flow reduces to an ODE. The behavior of Ricci Flow in two, three, and four dimensional homogenous manifolds has been calculated and is well understood. The work presented here will describe efforts to better understand the behavior of R…
Motivated by Felix Klein's notion that geometry is governed by its group of symmetry transformations, Charles Ehresmann initiated the study of geometric structures on topological spaces locally modeled on a homogeneous space of a Lie group. These locally homogeneous spaces later formed the context of Thurston's 3-dimensional geometrization program. The basic problem is for a given topology S and a geometry X = G/H, to classify all the possible ways of introducing the local geometry of G/H into S. For example, a sphere admits no local Euclidean geometry: there is no metrically accurate Euclidea…
For k at least 2, we exhibit complete k-curvature homogeneous neutral signature pseudo-Riemannian manifolds which are not locally affine homogeneous (and hence not locally homogeneous). The curvature tensor of these manifolds is modeled on that of an indecomposible symmetric space. All the local scalar Weyl curvature invariants of these manifolds vanish.
We construct a family of balanced signature pseudo-Riemannian manifolds, which arise as hypersurfaces in flat space, that are curvature homogeneous, that are modeled on a symmetric space, and that are not locally homogeneous.
We will discuss in this paper homogeneous locally conformally Keahler (or shortly homogeneous l.c.K.) manifolds and locally homogeneous l.c.K. manifolds from various aspects of study in the field of l.c.K. geometry. We will provide a survey of known results along with some new results and observations; in particular we make a complete classification of 4-dimensional homogeneous and locally homogeneous l.c.K. manifolds in terms of Lie algebras.
We classify torsion-free real-analytic affine connections on compact oriented real-analytic surfaces which are locally homogeneous on a nontrivial open set, without being locally homogeneous on all of the surface. In particular, we prove that such connections exist. This classification relies in a local result that classifies germs of torsion-free real-analytic affine connections on a neighborhood of the origin in the plane which are quasihomogeneous, in the sense that they are locally homogeneous on an open set containing the origin in its closure, but not locally homogeneous in the neighborh…
Let $(M,F)$ be a connected Finsler space and $d$ the distance function of $(M,F)$. A Clifford translation is an isometry $ρ$ of $(M,F)$ of constant displacement, in other words such that $d(x,ρ(x))$ is a constant function on $M$. In this paper we consider a connected simply connected symmetric Finsler space and a discrete subgroup $Γ$ of the full group of isometries. We prove that the quotient manifold $(M, F)/Γ$ is a homogeneous Finsler space if and only if $Γ$ consists of Clifford translations of $(M,F)$. In the process of the proof of the main theorem, we classify all the Clifford translati…
Let $G/H$ be a contractible homogeneous Sasaki manifold. A compact locally homogeneous aspherical Sasaki manifold $Γ\big\backslash G/H$ is by definition a quotient of $G/H$ by a discrete uniform subgroup $Γ\leq G$. We show that a compact locally homogeneous aspherical Sasaki manifold is always quasi-regular, that is, $Γ\big\backslash G/H$ is an $S^{1}$-Seifert bundle over a locally homogeneous aspherical Kähler orbifold. We discuss the structure of the isometry group $\mathrm{Isom}(G/H)$ for a Sasaki metric of $G/H$ in relation with the pseudo-Hermitian group $\mathrm{Psh} (G/H)$ for the Sasak…
In this paper, we prove two rigidity results for non-positively curved homogeneous Finsler metrics. Our first main result yields an extension of Hu-Deng's well-known result proven for the Randers metrics. Indeed, we prove that every connected homogeneous Finsler space with non-positive flag curvature and isotropic S-curvature is Riemannian or locally Minkowskian. We extend the Szabó's rigidity theorem for Berwald surfaces and show that homogeneous isotropic Berwald metrics with non-positive flag curvature are Riemannian or locally Minkowskian. We prove that a homogeneous $(α, β)$-metrics has i…
J. Streets and G. Tian recently introduced symplectic curvature flow, a geometric flow on almost Kähler manifolds generalising Kähler-Ricci flow. The present article gives examples of explicit solutions to this flow of non-Kähler structures on several nilmanifolds and on twistor fibrations over hyperbolic space studied by J. Fine and D. Panov. The latter lead to examples of non-Kähler static solutions of symplectic curvature flow which can be seen as analogues of Kähler-Einstein manifolds in Kähler-Ricci flow.
We study locally conformal calibrated $G_2$-structures whose underlying Riemannian metric is Einstein, showing that in the compact case the scalar curvature cannot be positive. As a consequence, a compact homogeneous $7$-manifold cannot admit an invariant Einstein locally conformal calibrated $G_2$-structure unless the underlying metric is flat. In contrast to the compact case, we provide a non-compact example of homogeneous manifold endowed with a locally conformal calibrated $G_2$-structure whose associated Riemannian metric is Einstein and non Ricci-flat. The homogeneous Einstein metric is …
k-Curvature homogeneous three-dimensional Walker metrics are described for k=0,1,2. This allows a complete description of locally homogeneous three-dimensional Walker metrics, showing that there exist exactly three isometry classes of such manifolds. As an application one obtains a complete description of all locally homogeneous Lorentzian manifolds with recurrent curvature. Moreover, potential functions are constructed in all the locally homogeneous manifolds resulting in steady gradient Ricci and Cotton solitons.
In this paper we show as main results two structure theorems of a compact homogeneous locally conformally Kaehler (or shortly l.c.K.) manifold, a holomorphic structure theorem asserting that it has a structure of holomorphic principal fiber bundle over a flag manifold with fiber a 1-dimensional complex torus, and a metric structure theorem asserting that it is necessarily of Vaisman type. We also discuss and determine l.c.K. reductive Lie groups and compact locally homogeneous l.c.K. manifolds of reductive Lie groups.
A smooth foliation of a Riemannian manifold is metric when its leaves are locally equidistant and is homogenous when its leaves are locally orbits of a Lie group acting by isometries. Homogenous foliations are metric foliations, but metric foliations need not be homogenous foliations. We prove that a homogenous three-sphere is naturally reductive if and only if all of its metric foliations are homogenous.
We give necessary conditions for the existence of a compact manifold locally modelled on a given homogeneous space, which generalize some earlier results, in terms of relative Lie algebra cohomology. Applications include both reductive and nonreductive cases. For example, we prove that there does not exist a compact manifold locally modelled on a positive dimensional coadjoint orbit of a real linear solvable algebraic group.
We present short proofs of all known topological properties of general Busemann $G$-spaces (at present no other property is known for dimensions more than four). We prove that all small metric spheres in locally $G$-homogeneous Busemann $G$-spaces are homeomorphic and strongly topologically homogeneous. This is a key result in the context of the classical Busemann conjecture concerning the characterization of topological manifolds, which asserts that every $n$-dimensional Busemann $G$-space is a topological $n$-manifold. We also prove that every Busemann $G$-space which is uniformly locally $G…
We study the Hermitian curvature flow of locally homogeneous non-Kähler metrics on compact complex surfaces. In particular, we characterize the long-time behavior of the solutions to the flow. We also provide the first example of a compact complex non-Kähler manifold admitting a finite time singularity for the Hermitian curvature flow. Finally, we compute the Gromov-Hausdorff limit of immortal solutions after a suitable normalization. Our results follow by a case-by-case analysis of the flow on each complex model geometry.
We show that every n-dimensional locally homogeneous pp-wave is a plane wave, provided it is indecomposable and its curvature operator, when acting on $2$-forms, has rank greater than one. As a consequence we obtain that indecomposable, Ricci-flat locally homogeneous pp-waves are plane waves. This generalises a classical result by Jordan, Ehlers and Kundt in dimension 4. Several examples show that our assumptions on indecomposability and the rank of the curvature are essential.
