We give asymptotic formulas for the multiplicities of weights and irreducible summands in high-tensor powers $V_λ^{\otimes N}$ of an irreducible representation $V_λ$ of a compact connected Lie group $G$. The weights are allowed to depend on $N$, and we obtain several regimes of pointwise asymptotics, ranging from a central limit region to a large deviations region. We use a complex steepest descent method that applies to general asymptotic counting problems for lattice paths with steps in a convex polytope.
Mirkovic and Vilonen discovered a canonical basis of algebraic cycles for the intersection homology of (the closures of the strata of) the loop Grassmannian. The moment map images of these varieties are a collection of polytopes, and they may be used to compute weight multiplicities and tensor product multiplicities for representations of a semisimple group. The polytopes are explicitly described for a few low rank groups.
We apply some recent developments of Baldoni-DeLoera-Vergne on vector partition functions, to Kostant and Steinberg formulas, in the case of $A_r$. We therefore get a fast {\sc Maple} program that computes for $A_r$: the multiplicity $c_{λ,μ}$ of the weight $μ$ in the representation $V(λ)$ of highest weight $λ$; the multiplicity $c_{λ,μ,ν}$ of the representation $V(ν)$ in $V(λ)\otimes V(μ)$. The computation also gives the locally polynomial functions $c_{λ,μ}$ and $c_{λ,μ,ν}$.
We establish a connection between root multiplicities for Borcherds-Kac-Moody algebras and graph coloring. We show that the generalized chromatic polynomial of the graph associated to a given Borcherds algebra can be used to give a closed formula for certain root multiplicities. Using this connection we give a second interpretation, namely that the root multiplicity of a given root coincides with the number of acyclic orientations with a unique sink of a certain graph (depending on the root). Finally, using the combinatorics of Lyndon words we construct a basis for the root spaces correspondin…
Starting from Jacobi-Trudi's type determinental expressions for the Schur functions corresponding to types $B,C$ and $D,$ we define a natural $q$-analogue of the multiplicity $[V(λ):M(μ)]$ when $M(μ)$ is a tensor product of row or column shaped modules defined by $μ$. We prove that these $q$-multiplicities are equal to certain Kostka-Foulkes polynomials related to the root systems $C$ or $D$. Finally we derive formulas expressing the associated multiplicities in terms of Kostka numbers.
We express the multiplicities of the irreducible summands of certain tensor products of irreducible integrable modules for an affine Kac-Moody algebra over a simply laced Lie algebra as sums of multiplicities in appropriate excellent filtrations (Demazure flags). As an application, we obtain expressions for the outer multiplicities of tensor products of two fundamental modules for $\widehat{\mathfrak{sl}}_2$ in terms of partitions with bounded parts, which subsequently lead to certain partition identities.
The tensor powers of the vector representation associated to an infinite rank quantum group decompose into irreducible components with multiplicities independant of the infinite root system considered. Although the irreducible modules obtained in this way are not of highest weight, they admit a crystal basis and a canonical basis. This permits in particular to obtain for each familly of classical Lie algebras a Robinson-Schensted correspondence on biwords defined on infinite alphabets. We then depict a structure of bi-crystal on these bi-words. This RS-correspondence yields also a plactic alge…
We consider maximal non-$l$-intertwining collections, which are a higher-dimensional version of the maximal non-crossing collections which give clusters of Plücker coordinates in the Grassmannian coordinate ring, as described by Scott. We extend a method of Scott for producing such collections, which are related to tensor products of higher Auslander algebras of type $A$. We show that a higher preprojective algebra of the tensor product of two $d$-representation-finite algebras has a $d$-precluster-tilting subcategory. Finally we relate mutations of these collections to a form of tilting for t…
We study the relationship between the tensor product multiplicities of a compact semisimple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ and a special function $\mathcal{J}$ associated to $\mathfrak{g}$, called the volume function. The volume function arises in connection with the randomized Horn's problem in random matrix theory and has a related significance in symplectic geometry. Building on box spline deconvolution formulae of Dahmen-Micchelli and De Concini-Procesi-Vergne, we develop new techniques for computing the multiplicities from $\mathcal{J}$, answering a question posed by Coquereaux and Zuber. In …
We show that any bijection between two root systems that preserves angles (but not necessarily lengths) gives rise to inequalities relating tensor product multiplicities for the corresponding complex semisimple Lie groups (or Lie algebras). We explain the inequalities in two ways: combinatorially, using Littelmann's Path Model, and geometrically, using isogenies between algebaric groups defined over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic.
The weight multiplicities of finite dimensional simple Lie algebras can be computed individually using various methods. Still, it is hard to derive explicit closed formulas. Similarly, explicit closed formulas for the multiplicities of maximal weights of affine Kac--Moody algebras are not known in most cases. In this paper, we study weight multiplicities for both finite and affine cases of classical types for certain infinite families of highest weights modules. We introduce new classes of Young tableaux, called the {\em $($spin$)$ rigid tableaux}, and prove that they are equinumerous to the w…
The partition algebra $\mathsf{P}_k(n)$ and the symmetric group $\mathsf{S}_n$ are in Schur-Weyl duality on the $k$-fold tensor power $\mathsf{M}_n^{\otimes k}$ of the permutation module $\mathsf{M}_n$ of $\mathsf{S}_n$, so there is a surjection $\mathsf{P}_k(n) \to \mathsf{Z}_k(n) := \mathsf{End}_{\mathsf{S}_n}(\mathsf{M}_n^{\otimes k}),$ which is an isomorphism when $n \ge 2k$. We prove a dimension formula for the irreducible modules of the centralizer algebra $\mathsf{Z}_k(n)$ in terms of Stirling numbers of the second kind. Via Schur-Weyl duality, these dimensions equal the multiplicities …
Let ${\mathcal W}_n$ be the Lie algebra of polynomial vector fields. We classify simple weight ${\mathcal W}_n$-modules $M$ with finite weight multiplicities. We prove that every such nontrivial module $M$ is either a tensor module or the unique simple submodule in a tensor module associated with the de Rham complex on $\mathbb C^n$.
In this paper, using computations done through the LiE software, we compare the tensor product of irreducible selfdual representations of the special linear group with those of classical groups to formulate some conjectures relating the two. In the process a few other phenomenon present themselves which we record as questions. More precisely, under the natural correspondence of irreducible finite dimensional selfdual representations of ${\rm SL}_{2n}({\mathbb C})$ with those of ${\rm Spin}_{2n+1}({\mathbb C})$, it is easy to see that if the tensor product of three irreducible representations o…
Information on su(N) tensor product multiplicities is neatly encoded in Berenstein-Zelevinsky triangles. Here we study a generalisation of these triangles by allowing negative as well as non-negative integer entries. For a fixed triple product of weights, these generalised Berenstein-Zelevinsky triangles span a lattice in which one may move by adding integer linear combinations of so-called virtual triangles. Inequalities satisfied by the coefficients of the virtual triangles describe a polytope. The tensor product multiplicities may be computed as the number of integer points in this convex p…
We obtain a family of explicit "polyhedral" combinatorial expressions for multiplicities in the tensor product of two simple finite-dimensional modules over a complex semisimple Lie algebra. Here "polyhedral" means that the multiplicity in question is expressed as the number of lattice points in some convex polytope. Our answers use a new combinatorial concept of $\ii$-trails which resemble Littelmann's paths but seem to be more tractable. We also study combinatorial structure of Lusztig's canonical bases or, equivalently of Kashiwara's global bases. Although Lusztig's and Kashiwara's approach…
We study multiplicities of unipotent characters in tensor products of unipotent characters of GL(n,q). We prove that these multiplicities are polynomials in q with non-negative integer coefficients. We study the degree of these polynomials and give a necessary and sufficient condition in terms of the representation theory of symmetric groups for these polynomials to be non-zero.
In this paper we study the asymptotic of multiplicities of irreducible representations in large tensor products of finite dimensional representations of simple Lie algebras and their statistics with respect to Plancherel and character probability measures. We derive the asymptotic distribution of irreducible components for the Plancherel measure, generalizing results of Biane and Tate and Zelditch. We also derive the asymptotic of the character measure for generic parameters and an intermediate scaling in the vicinity of the Plancherel measure. It is interesting that the asymptotic measure is …
It was recently proven that the total multiplicity in the decomposition into irreducibles of the tensor product lambda x mu of two irreducible representations of a simple Lie algebra is invariant under conjugation of one of them; at a given level, this also applies to the fusion multiplicities of affine algebras. Here, we show that, in the case of SU(3), the lists of multiplicities, in the tensor products lambda x mu and lambda x bar{mu}, are identical up to permutations. This latter property does not hold in general for other Lie algebras. We conjecture that the same property should hold for …
We present the first polytope volume formulas for the multiplicities of affine fusion, the fusion in Wess-Zumino-Witten conformal field theories, for example. Thus, we characterise fusion multiplicities as discretised volumes of certain convex polytopes, and write them explicitly as multiple sums measuring those volumes. We focus on su(2), but discuss higher-point (N>3) and higher-genus fusion in a general way. The method follows that of our previous work on tensor product multiplicities, and so is based on the concepts of generalised Berenstein-Zelevinsky diagrams, and virtual couplings. As a…
For $n \geq 2$ consider the affine Lie algebra $\widehat{s\ell}(n)$ with simple roots $\{α_i \mid 0 \leq i \leq n-1\}$. Let $V(kΛ_0), \, k \in \mathbb{Z}_{\geq 1}$ denote the integrable highest weight $\widehat{s\ell}(n)$-module with highest weight $kΛ_0$. It is known that there are finitely many maximal dominant weights of $V(kΛ_0)$. Using the crystal base realization of $V(kΛ_0)$ and lattice path combinatorics we determine the multiplicities of a large set of maximal dominant weights of the form $kΛ_0 - λ^\ell_{a,b}$ where $ λ^\ell_{a,b} = \ellα_0 + (\ell-b)α_1 + (\ell-(b+1))α_2 + \cdots + α…
For each valued quiver $Q$ of Dynkin type, we construct a valued ice quiver $Δ_Q^2$. Let $G$ be a simple connected Lie group with Dynkin diagram the underlying valued graph of $Q$. The upper cluster algebra of $Δ_Q^2$ is graded by the triple dominant weights $(μ,ν,λ)$ of $G$. We prove that when $G$ is simply-laced, the dimension of each graded component counts the tensor multiplicity $c_{μ,ν}^λ$. We conjecture that this is also true if $G$ is not simply-laced, and sketch a possible approach. Using this construction, we improve Berenstein-Zelevinsky's model, or in some sense generalize Knutson-…
We generalize the character formulas for multiplicities of irreducible constituents from group theory to semigroup theory using Rota's theory of Möbius inversion. The technique works for a large class of semigroups including: inverse semigroups, semigroups with commuting idempotents, idempotent semigroups and semigroups with basic algebras. Using these tools we are able to give a complete description of the spectra of random walks on finite semigroups admitting a faithful representation by upper triangular matrices over the complex numbers. These include the random walks on chambers of hyperpl…
We describe the combinatorics of the multisemigroup with multiplicities for the tensor category of subbimodules of the identity bimodule, for an arbitrary non-uniform orientation of a finite cyclic quiver.
We classify irreducible representations of the special linear groups in positive characteristic with small weight multiplicities with respect to the group rank and give estimates for the maximal weight multiplicities. For the natural embeddings of the classical groups, inductive systems of representations with totally bounded weight multiplicities are classified. An analogue of the Steinberg tensor product theorem for arbitrary indecomposable inductive systems for such embeddings is proved.
Using Lakshmibai-Seshadri paths, we give a combinatorial realization of the crystal basis of an extremal weight module of integral extremal weight over the quantized universal enveloping algebra associated to the infinite rank affine Lie algebra of type $B_{\infty}$, $C_{\infty}$, or $D_{\infty}$. Moreover, via this realization, we obtain an explicit description (in terms of Littlewood-Richardson coefficients) of how tensor products of these crystal bases decompose into connected components when their extremal weights are of nonnegative levels. These results, in types $B_{\infty}$, $C_{\infty}…
We obtain the decomposition of the tensor space $\mathfrak{sl}_n^{\otimes k}$ as a module for $\mathfrak{sl}_n$, find an explicit formula for the multiplicities of its irreducible summands, and (when $n \ge 2k$) describe the centralizer algebra $C=End_{\mathfrak{sl}_n}(\mathfrak{sl}_n^{\otimes k})$ and its representations. The multiplicities of the irreducible summands are derangement numbers in several important instances, and the dimension of $C$ is given by the number of derangements of a set of $2k$ elements.
The standard supercharacter theory of the finite unipotent upper-triangular matrices $U_n(q)$ gives rise to a beautiful combinatorics based on set partitions. As with the representation theory of the symmetric group, embeddings of $U_m(q)\subseteq U_n(q)$ for $m\leq n$ lead to branching rules. Diaconis and Isaacs established that the restriction of a supercharacter of $U_n(q)$ is a nonnegative integer linear combination of supercharacters of $U_m(q)$ (in fact, it is polynomial in $q$). In a first step towards understanding the combinatorics of coefficients in the branching rules of the superch…
The total multiplicity in the decomposition into irreducibles of the tensor product i x j of two irreducible representations of a simple Lie algebra is invariant under conjugation of one of them sum_k N_{i j}^{k}= sum_k N_{ibar j}^{k}. This also applies to the fusion multiplicities of affine algebras in conformal WZW theories. In that context, the statement is equivalent to a property of the modular S matrix, Sigma(k)= sum_j S_{j k}=0 if k is a complex representation. Curiously, this vanishing of Sigma(k) also holds when k is a quaternionic representation. We provide proofs of all these statem…
Let $\fg$ be the Lie superalgebra $\fgl(m,n).$ Algorithms for computing the composition factors and multiplicities of Kac modules for $\fg$ were given by the second author in 1996, and by J. Brundan in 2003. We give a combinatorial proof of the equivalence between the two algorithms. The proof uses weight and cap diagrams introduced by Brundan and C. Stroppel, and cancelations between paths in a graph $\mathcal{G}$ defined using these diagrams. Each vertex of $\mathcal{G}$ corresponds to a highest weight of a finite dimensional simple module, and each edge is weighted by a nonnegative integer.…
We give a representation-theoretic interpretation of the Langlands character duality of Frenkel and Hernandez, and show that the "Langlands branching multiplicities" for symmetrizable Kac-Moody Lie algebras are equal to certain tensor product multiplicities. For finite type quantum groups, the connection with tensor products can be explained in terms of tilting modules.
In this paper we give a direct proof of the equality of certain generating function associated with tensor product multiplicities of Kirillov-Reshetikhin modules for each simple Lie algebra g. Together with the theorems of Nakajima and Hernandez, this gives the proof of the combinatorial version of the Kirillov-Reshetikhin conjecture, which gives tensor product multiplicities in terms of restricted fermionic summations.
The classical Pieri formula gives a multiplicity free expansion of an irreducible module with a fundamental one for the complex general linear group. In this article we replace the tensor product by the fusion product and prove an analogue Pieri formula for higher level Demazure modules for the affine Lie algebra $\widehat{\mathfrak{sl}}_{n+1}$. To be more precise, we show that the fusion product of an arbitrary stable Demazure module with a fundamental module admits a multiplicity free excellent filtration and the successive quotients are described explicitly. As a consequence, we derive recu…
In the recent works of Brubaker-Bump-Friedberg, Bump-Nakasuji, and others, the product in the Casselman-Shalika formula is written as a sum over a crystal. The coefficient of each crystal element is defined using the data coming from the whole crystal graph structure. In this paper, we adopt the tableaux model for the crystal and obtain the same coefficients using data from each individual tableaux; i.e., we do not need to look at the graph structure. We also show how to combine our results with tensor products of crystals to obtain the sum of coefficients for a given weight. The sum is a q-po…
The paper is devoted to the generalization of Lusztig's q-analog of weight multiplicities to the Lie superalgebras gl(n,m) and spo(2n,M). We define such q-analogs K_{lambda,mu}(q) for the typical modules and for the irreducible covariant tensor gl(n,m)-modules of highest weight lambda. For gl(n,m), the defined polynomials have nonnegative integer coefficients if the weight mu is dominant. For spo(2n,M), we show that the positivity property holds when mu is dominant and sufficiently far from a specific wall of the fundamental chamber. We also establish that the q-analog associated to an irreduc…
We study the remarkable Saxl conjecture which states that tensor squares of certain irreducible representations of the symmetric groups S_n contain all irreducibles as their constituents. Our main result is that they contain representations corresponding to hooks and two row Young diagrams. For that, we develop a new sufficient condition for the positivity of Kronecker coefficients in terms of characters, and use combinatorics of rim hook tableaux combined with known results on unimodality of certain partition functions. We also present connections and speculations on random characters of S_n.
We decompose the $\hat{\mathfrak{sl}}(n)$-module $V(Λ_0) \otimes V(Λ_i)$ and give generating function identities for the outer multiplicities. In the process we discover some seemingly new partition identities for $n=3, 4$.
We consider a large class of series of symmetrizable Kac-Moody algebras (generically denoted X_n). This includes the classical series A_n as well as others like E_n whose members are of Indefinite type. The focus is to analyze the behavior of representations in the large n limit. Motivated by the classical theory of A_n, we consider tensor product decompositions of irreducible highest weight representations of X_n and study how these vary with n. The notion of ``double headed'' dominant weights is introduced. For such weights, we show that tensor product decompositions in X_n do stabilize, gen…
A reduction formula for the branching coefficients of tensor products of representations and more generally restrictions of representations of a semisimple group to a semisimple subgroup is proved in work by Knutson-Tao and Derksen-Weyman. This formula holds when the highest weights of the representations belong to a codimension 1 face of the Horn cone, which by work by Ressayre corresponds to a Littlewood-Richardson coefficient equal to 1. We prove a similar reduction formula when this coefficient is equal to 2, and show some properties of the class of the branch divisor corresponding to a ge…
The weight systems of finite-dimensional representations of complex, simple Lie algebras exhibit patterns beyond Weyl-group symmetry. These patterns occur because weight systems can be decomposed into lattice polytopes in a natural way. Since lattice polytopes are relatively simple, this decomposition is useful, in addition to being more economical than the decomposition into single weights. An expansion of characters into polytope sums follows from the polytope decomposition of weight systems. We study this polytope expansion here. A new, general formula is given for the polytope sums involve…
We study weight modules of the Lie algebra $W_2$ of vector fields on ${\mathbb C}^2$. A classification of all simple weight modules of $W_2$ with a uniformly bounded set of weight multiplicities is provided. To achieve this classification we introduce a new family of generalized tensor $W_n$-modules. Our classification result is an important step in the classification of all simple weight $W_n$-modules with finite weight multiplicities.
We discuss some applications of signature quantization to the representation theory of compact Lie groups. In particular, we prove signature analogues of the Kostant formula for weight multiplicities and the Steinberg formula for tensor product multiplicities. Using symmetric functions, we also find, for type A, analogues of the Weyl branching rule and the Gelfand-Tsetlin theorem. These analogues involve a q-analogue of the Kostant partition function. We show that in type A, this q-analogue is polynomial in the relative interior of the cells of a complex of cones. This chamber complex can be t…
For any reductive Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ and commutative, associative, unital algebra $S$, we give a complete classification of the simple weight modules of $\mathfrak{g}\otimes S $ with finite weight multiplicities. In particular, any such module is parabolically induced from a simple admissible module for a Levi subalgebra. Conversely, all modules obtained in this way have finite weight multiplicities. These modules are isomorphic to tensor products of evaluation modules at distinct maximal ideals of $S$. Our results also classify simple Harish-Chandra modules up to isomorphism for all c…
We exhibit for all positive integers r, an explicit cellular structure for the endomorphism algebra of the r'th tensor power of an integral form of the Weyl module with highest weight d of the quantised enveloping algebra of sl2. When q is specialised to a root of unity of order bigger than d, we consider the corresponding specialisation of the tensor power. We prove one general result which gives sufficient conditions for the commutativity of specialisation with the taking of endomorphism algebras, and another which relates the multiplicities of indecomposable summands to the dimensions of si…
