Following work of Brundan and Kleshchev (2000), which considered tensor products with the natural module (and its dual) for $\text{GL}(n)$, we take the next fundamental module and explore the relationship between multiplicities of composition factors of tensor products of simple modules for $\text{GL}(n)$ and branching multiplicities. In doing this we provide a method for determining the composition multiplicities for some composition factors of tensor products of simple modules with the wedge square of the dual natural module.

A reduction formula for the branching coefficients of tensor products of representations and more generally restrictions of representations of a semisimple group to a semisimple subgroup is proved in work by Knutson-Tao and Derksen-Weyman. This formula holds when the highest weights of the representations belong to a codimension 1 face of the Horn cone, which by work by Ressayre corresponds to a Littlewood-Richardson coefficient equal to 1. We prove a similar reduction formula when this coefficient is equal to 2, and show some properties of the class of the branch divisor corresponding to a ge…
Branching of symplectic groups is not multiplicity-free. We describe a new approach to resolving these multiplicities that is based on studying the associated branching algebra $B$. The algebra $B$ is a graded algebra whose components encode the multiplicities of irreducible representations of $Sp_{2n-2}$ in irreducible representations of $Sp_{2n}$. Our first theorem states that the map taking an element of $Sp_{2n}$ to its principal $n \times (n+1)$ submatrix induces an isomorphism of $\B$ to a different branching algebra $\B'$. The algebra $\B'$ encodes multiplicities of irreducible represen…
The multiplicities a_{lambda,mu} of simple modules L(mu) in the composition series of Kac modules V(lambda) for the Lie superalgebra gl(m/n) were described by Serganova, leading to her solution of the character problem for gl(m/n). In Serganova's algorithm all mu with nonzero a_{lambda,mu} are determined for a given lambda; this algorithm turns out to be rather complicated. In this Letter a simple rule is conjectured to find all nonzero a_{lambda,mu} for any given weight mu. In particular, we claim that for an r-fold atypical weight mu there are 2^r distinct weights lambda such that a_{lambda,…

We study category $\mathcal{O}$ for Takiff Lie algebras $\mathfrak{g} \otimes \mathbb{C}[ε]/(ε^2)$ where $\mathfrak{g}$ is the Lie algebra of a reductive algebraic group over $\mathbb{C}$. We decompose this category as a direct sum of certain subcategories and use an analogue of parabolic induction functors and twisting functors for BGG category $\mathcal{O}$ to prove equivalences between these subcategories. We then use these equivalences to compute the composition multiplicities of the simple modules in the Verma modules in terms of composition multiplicities in the BGG category $\mathcal{O}…
We review a class of modules for the wreath product S(m) wr S(n) of two symmetric groups which are analogous to the Specht modules of the symmetric group, and prove a pair of branching rules for this family of modules. These branching rules describe the behaviour of these wreath product Specht modules under restriction to the wreath products S(m-1) wr S(n) and S(m) wr S(n-1). In particular, we see that these restrictions of wreath product Specht modules have Specht module filtrations, and we obtain combinatorial interpretations of the multiplicities in these filtrations.
We study a category of Whittaker modules over a complex semisimple Lie algebra by realizing it as a category of twisted D-modules on the associated flag variety using Beilinson-Bernstein localization. The main result of this paper is the development of a geometric algorithm for computing the composition multiplicities of standard Whittaker modules. This algorithm establishes that these multiplicities are determined by a collection of polynomials we refer to as Whittaker Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials. In the case of trivial nilpotent character, this algorithm specializes to the usual algorithm fo…
We give a representation-theoretic interpretation of the Langlands character duality of Frenkel and Hernandez, and show that the "Langlands branching multiplicities" for symmetrizable Kac-Moody Lie algebras are equal to certain tensor product multiplicities. For finite type quantum groups, the connection with tensor products can be explained in terms of tilting modules.
We discuss recent developments on branching problems of irreducible unitary representations $π$ of real reductive groups when restricted to reductive subgroups. Highlighting the case where the underlying $(g,K)$-modules of $π$ are isomorphic to Zuckerman's derived functor modules $A_q(λ)$, we show various and rich features of branching laws such as infinite multiplicities, irreducible restrictions, multiplicity-free restrictions, and discrete decomposable restrictions. We also formulate a number of conjectures.
We say a representation V of a group G has stability if its multiplicities m^{G}_{V}(λ) is dependent only on some equivalence class of λfor a sufficiently large parameter λ. In this paper, we prove that the restriction of a holomorphic discrete series representation with respect to any holomorphic symmetric pairs has stability. As a corollary, we give a necessary and sufficient condition on multiplicity-freeness of the branching laws in this setting. This condition is same as the sufficient condition given by the theory of visible actions. We prove a general theorem before we show the stabilit…
We determine the Verma multiplicities of standard filtrations of projective modules for integral atypical blocks in the BGG category $\mathcal{O}$ for the orthosymplectic Lie superalgebras $\mathfrak{osp}(3|4)$ by way of translation functors. We then explicitly determine the composition factor multiplicities of Verma modules using BGG reciprocity.
We study branching laws for a classical group $G$ and a symmetric subgroup $H$. Our approach is through the {\it branching algebra}, the algebra of covariants for $H$ in the regular functions on the natural torus bundle over the flag manifold for $G$. We give concrete descriptions of (natural subalgebras of) the branching algebra using classical invariant theory. In this context, it turns out that the ten classes of classical symmetric pairs $(G,H)$ are associated in pairs, $(G,H)$ and $(H',G')$, and that the (partial) branching algebra for $(G,H)$ also describes a branching law from $H'$ to $…
Let $\mathfrak g$ be a classical Lie superalgebra of type I or a Cartan-type Lie superalgebra {\bf W}$(n)$. We study weight $\mathfrak g$-modules using a method inspired by Mathieu's classification of the simple weight modules with finite weight multiplicities over reductive Lie algebras, \cite{M}. Our approach is based on the fact that every simple weight $\mathfrak g$-module with finite weight multiplicities is obtained via a composition of a twist and localization from a highest weight module. This allows us to transfer many results for category ${\cal O}$ modules to the category of weight …
Perhaps the most important problem in representation theory in the 1970s and early 1980s was the determination of the multiplicity of composition factors in a Verma module. This problem was settled by the proof of the Kazhdan-Lusztig Conjecture which states that the multiplicities may be computed via Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials. In this paper, we introduce signed Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials, a variation of Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials which encodes signature information in addition to composition factor multiplicities and Jantzen filtration level. Careful consideration of Gabber and Joseph's pr…
We determine the Verma multiplicities and the characters of projective modules for atypical blocks in the BGG Category O for the general linear Lie superalgebras $\frak{gl}(2|2)$ and $\frak{gl}(3|1)$. We then explicitly determine the composition factor multiplcities of Verma modules in the atypicality 2 block of $\frak{gl}(2|2)$.
The composition factors and their multiplicities are determined for generalised Verma modules over the orthosymplectic Lie superalgebra osp(k|2). The results enable us to obtain explicit formulae for the formal characters and dimensions of the finite-dimensional irreducible modules. Applying these results, we also compute the first and second cohomology groups of the Lie superalgebra with coefficients in finite-dimensional Kac modules and irreducible modules.
Let $\fg$ be the Lie superalgebra $\fgl(m,n).$ Algorithms for computing the composition factors and multiplicities of Kac modules for $\fg$ were given by the second author in 1996, and by J. Brundan in 2003. We give a combinatorial proof of the equivalence between the two algorithms. The proof uses weight and cap diagrams introduced by Brundan and C. Stroppel, and cancelations between paths in a graph $\mathcal{G}$ defined using these diagrams. Each vertex of $\mathcal{G}$ corresponds to a highest weight of a finite dimensional simple module, and each edge is weighted by a nonnegative integer.…
