This paper is an expanded version of a talk given at the Current Developments in Mathematics Conference last November (2002) on the work of Wilfred Schmid on periods of limits of Hodge structures. The paper begins with an exposition of the theory of limits of Hodge structures with some emphasis on the geometry. It goes on to discuss (briefly) the periods of the limit mixed Hodge structure on the fundamental group (made unipotent) of the projective line minus 3 points and its connections with mixed zeta numbers and mixed Tate motives over Spec Z through the work Deligne, Goncharov and others.
For an algebraic vector bundle $E$ over a smooth algebraic variety $X$, a monodromic $D$-module on $E$ is decomposed into a direct sum of some $O$-modules on $X$. We show that the Hodge filtration of a monodromic mixed Hodge module is decomposed with respect to the decomposition of the underlying $D$-module. By using this result, we endow the Fourier-Laplace transform $M^{\wedge}$ of the underlying $D$-module $M$ of a monodromic mixed Hodge module with a mixed Hodge module structure. Moreover, we describe the irregular Hodge filtration on $M^{\wedge}$ concretely and show that it coincides with…
We introduce the notion of mixed Hodge complex on an algebraic variety, improving Du Bois' filtered complex, and relate Deligne's theory of mixed Hodge structure with the theory of mixed Hodge module. This was supposed to be true, but is quite nontrivial, because the theory of mixed Hodge module does not work on a simplicial scheme. Some application to the Du Bois singularity is given.
With a basic knowledge of cohomology theory, the background necessary to understand Hodge theory and polarization, Deligne's Mixed Hodge Structure on cohomology of complex algebraic varieties is described.
We explain some fundamental differences between the theories of mixed Hodge modules and mixed twistor modules (including the difference in weight system on the nearby cycle functor) which do not seem to be clarified explicitly in the literature.
We promote Beilinson's triangulated equivalence between the bounded derived category of rational polarizable mixed Hodge structures and the derived category of rational polarizable mixed Hodge complexes to an equivalence of symmetric monoidal quasi-categories. We use this equivalence to construct a presheaf of commutative differential graded algebras in the ind-completion of the category of rational mixed Hodge structures which computes Deligne's mixed Hodge structure on the rational Betti cohomology of $\mathbf{C}$-schemes of finite type. This leads to a preshea--in the quasi-categorical sens…
We construct toroidal partial compactifications of the moduli spaces of mixed Hodge structures with polarized graded quotients. They are moduli spaces of log mixed Hodge structures with polarized graded quotients. We construct them as the spaces of nilpotent orbits.
We continue our work on variations of graded-polarized mixed Hodge structures by defining analogs of the harmonic metric equations for filtered bundles and proving a precise analog of Schmid's Nilpotent Orbit Theorem for 1-parameter degenerations of graded-polarized mixed Hodge structure.
We announce the construction of toroidal partial compactifications of the moduli spaces of mixed Hodge structures with polarized graded quotients. They are moduli spaces of log mixed Hodge structures with polarized graded quotients. We include an application to the analyticity of zero loci of some functions.
In this article we are interested in morphisms without slope for mixed Hodge modules. We first show the commutativity of iterated nearby cycles and vanishing cycles applied to a mixed Hodge module in the case of a morphism without slope. Then we define the notion "strictly without slope" for a mixed Hodge module and we show the preservation of this condition under the direct image by a proper morphism. As an application we prove the compatibility of the Hodge filtration and Kashiwara-Malgrange filtrations for some pure Hodge modules with support an hypersurface with quasi-ordinary singularitie…
In this paper, we show that the mixed Hodge structures of character varieties are of Hodge--Tate type and that the mixed Hodge polynomials are independent of the choice of generic eigenvalues, which is a conjecture due to Hausel, Letellier and Rodriguez-Villegas. Moreover, we investigate the mixed Hodge structures of the moduli space of semistable parabolic Higgs bundles and the moduli space of semistable regular singular parabolic connections. We show that the mixed Hodge structures of these moduli spaces are pure.
We construct an enlargement of the classifying space of mixed Hodge structures with polarized graded quotients, by adding mixed Hodge theoretic version of SL(2)-orbits. This space has a real analytic structure and a log structure with sign. The SL(2)-orbit theorem in several variables for mixed Hodge structures can be understood naturally with this space.
We construct a Mixed Hodge Structure on the local complete ring of the representation scheme at the holonomy of a VHS on a compact Kähler manifold and prove that the corresponding tautological representation is the holonomy of a VMHS. In order to carry out this construction we revisit the well-known work of Goldman and Millson on the deformation theory of representations of Kähler groups.
For a smooth algebraic variety $X$, a monodromic $D$-module on $X\times \mathbb{C}$ is decomposed into a direct sum of some $D$-modules on $X$. We show that the Hodge filtration of a mixed Hodge module on $X\times \mathbb{C}$ whose underlying $D$-module is monodromic is also decomposed. Moreover, we show that there is an equivalence of categories between the category of monodromic mixed Hodge modules on $X\times \mathbb{C}$ and the category of ``gluing data''. As an application, we endow the Fourier-Laplace transformation of the underlying $D$-module of a monodromic mixed Hodge module with a m…
This note is inspired by the work of Deligne on the local behavior of Hodge structures at infinity. We study limit mixed Hodge structures of degenerating families of compact hyperkähler manifolds. We show that when the monodromy action on $H^2$ has maximal index of unipotency, the limit mixed Hodge structures on all cohomology groups are of Hodge-Tate type.
These notes are an extended version of the authors' lectures at the 2013 CMI Workshop "Mixed Hodge Modules and Their Applications". We give an overview, with an emphasis on applications, of recent developments on the interaction between characteristic class theories for singular spaces and Saito's theory of mixed Hodge modules in the complex algebraic context.
The purpose of this work is to geometrize the notion of mixed Hodge structure. Therefore, we associate equivariant vector bundles on the projective plane to trifiltered vector spaces. Making this Rees construction with filtrations arising from mixed Hodge structures gives an equivalence of categories between the category of mixed Hodge structures and a category of equivariant vector bundles on ${\bf P}^{2}_{\bf C}$ that are semistable for a semistability condition with respect to a divisor. Using this dictionary we can recover geometrically some properties of mixed Hodge structures like the ab…
After explaining the definition of pure and mixed Hodge modules on complex manifolds, we describe some of Saito's most important results and their proofs, and then discuss two simple applications of the theory.
The purpose of this note is prove that the mixed Hodge structure constructed by the author in math.AG/0301140 [The Leray spectral sequence is motivic, Invent. 2005] for geometric variations of Hodge structure coincides with the structure coming from M. Saito's mixed Hodge module theory. This note also contains a small erratum for the earlier paper.
We give some details of a simpler definition of mixed Hodge modules which has been announced in some papers. Compared with earlier arguments, this new definition is simplified by using Beilinson's maximal extension together with stability by subquotients systematically.
The purpose of this article is to investigate the properties of the category of mixed plectic Hodge structures defined by Nekovář and Scholl. We give an equivalent description of mixed plectic Hodge structures in terms of the weight and partial Hodge filtrations. We also construct an explicit complex calculating the extension groups in this category.
This paper was motivated by the following question: Recall that for a smooth projective variety X whose polarized Hodge structure on H^n(X,Q)_{prim} leads to a period point ...
We discuss the variations of mixed Hodge structure for cohomology with compact support of quasi-projective simple normal crossing pairs. We show that they are graded polarizable admissible variations of mixed Hodge structure. Then we prove a generalization of the Fujita--Kawamata semi-positivity theorem.
We propose a definition of ``nonabelian mixed Hodge structure'' together with a construction associating to a smooth projective variety $X$ and to a nonabelian mixed Hodge structure $V$, the ``nonabelian cohomology of $X$ with coefficients in $V$'' which is a (pre-)nonabelian mixed Hodge structure denoted $H=Hom(X_M, V)$. We describe the basic definitions and then give some conjectures saying what is supposed to happen. At the end we compute an example: the case where $V$ has underlying homotopy type the complexified 2-sphere, and mixed Hodge structure coming from its identification with $\pp …
For a smooth, projective complex variety, we introduce several mixed Hodge structures associated to higher algebraic cycles. Most notably, we introduce a mixed Hodge structure for a pair of higher cycles which are in the refined normalized complex and intersect properly. In a special case, this mixed Hodge structure is an oriented biextension, and its height agrees with the higher archimedean height pairing introduced in a previous paper by the first two authors. We also compute a non-trivial example of this height given by Bloch-Wigner dilogarithm function. Finally we study the variation of m…
We consider a hypersurface in $\mathbb{C}^n$ with an isolated singular point at the origin, and study the mixed Hodge structure of the stalk of its intersection cohomology complex at the origin. In particular we express the dimension of each graded piece of the weight filtration of this mixed Hodge structure in terms of the numbers of the Jordan blocks in the Milnor monodromy.
For a linear algebraic group $G$ over $\bf Q$, we consider the period domains $D$ classifying $G$-mixed Hodge structures, and construct the extended period domains $D_{\mathrm{BS}}$, $D_{\mathrm{SL}(2)}$, and $Γ\backslash D_Σ$. In particular, we give toroidal partial compactifications of mixed Mumford--Tate domains.
We prove that a variation of graded-polarizable mixed Hodge structure over a punctured disk with unipotent monodromy, has a limiting mixed Hodge structure at the puncture (i.e., it is admissible in the sense of [SZ]) which splits over $\R$, if and only if certain grading of the complexified weight filtration, depending smoothly on the Hodge filtration, extends across the puncture. In particular, the result exactly supplements Schmid's Theorem for pure structures, which holds for the graded variation, and gives a Hodge-theoretic condition for the relative monodromy weight filtration to exist.
We construct a hermitian metric on the classifying spaces of graded-polarized mixed Hodge structures and prove analogs of the strong distance estimate between an admissible period map and the approximating nilpotent orbit. We also consider the asymptotic behavior of the biextension metric, the norm estimates and the asymptotics of the reduced limit Hodge filtration.
This is primarily an expository piece and the first sentence of the introduction pretty much sums it up: This article is aimed at people who already know what mixed Hodge structures are and what they are good for, but who are not sure how to construct them.
In this article, we will give the Deligne 1-motives up to isogeny corresponding to the $\mathbb{Q}$-limiting mixed Hodge structures of semi-stable degenerations of curves, by using logarithmic structures and Steenbrink's cohomological mixed Hodge complexes associated to semi-stable degenerations of curves.
We study the monodromies and the limit mixed Hodge structures of families of complete intersection varieties over a punctured disk in the complex plane. For this purpose, we express their motivic nearby fibers in terms of the geometric data of some Newton polyhedra. In particular, the limit mixed Hodge numbers and some part of the Jordan normal forms of the monodromies of such a family will be described very explicitly.
We identify the category of real mixed Hodge structures with the category of vector bundles with connections (not necessarily flat) on C, equivariant with respect to C^*. Here C is the complex plane considered as a 2-dimensional real manifold, and C^* is the multiplicative group of complex numbers considered as a real group.
Generalizing a theorem of Macdonald, we show a formula for the mixed Hodge structure on the cohomology of the symmetric products of bounded complexes of mixed Hodge modules by showing the existence of the canonical action of the symmetric group on the multiple external self-products of complexes of mixed Hodge modules. We also generalize a theorem of Hirzebruch and Zagier on the signature of the symmetric products of manifolds to the case of the symmetric products of symmetric parings on bounded complexes with constructible cohomology sheaves where the pairing is not assumed to be non-degenera…
Given a complex variety $X$, a linear algebraic group $G$ and a representation $ρ$ of the fundamental group $π\_1(X,x)$ into $G$, we develop a framework for constructing a functorial mixed Hodge structure on the formal local ring of the representation variety of $π\_1(X,x)$ into $G$ at $ρ$ using mixed Hodgediagrams and methods of $L\_\infty$ algebras. We apply it in two geometric situations: either when $X$ is compact K{ä}hler and $ρ$ is the monodromy of a variation of Hodge structure, or when $X$ is smooth quasi-projective and $ρ$ has finite image.
The normal function associated to algebraic cycles in higher Chow groups defines a differential equation. This Picard-Fuchs equation defines an extension of $D$-modules as well as an extension of local systems. In this paper, we show that both extensions define the same extension of mixed Hodge modules determined by the normal function.
We give some remarks on limit mixed Hodge structure and spectrum. These are more or less well-known to the specialists, and do not seem to be stated explicitly in the literature. However, they do not seem to be completely trivial to the beginners, and may be worth writing down explicitly.
We construct a polarization on the relative log de Rham cohomology groups of a projective log deformation. To this end, we study the behavior of weight and Hodge filtrations under the cup product and construct a trace morphism for a log deformation.
We study a period map for triple coverings of $\mathbf P^2$branching along special configurations of $6$ lines. Though the moduli space of special configurations isa two dimensional variety, the minimal models of the coverings form a oneparameter family of K3 surfaces. We extract extra one dimensionalinformation from the mixed Hodge structure on the second relative homology group.
Let X be a complete complex nonsingular algebraic variety and D a closed algebraic subset of X. We show that the cup product maps H^i(X \setminus D) \otimes H^j(X,D) \to H^{i+j}(X,D) are morphisms of mixed Hodge structures. As a corollary we obtain a new proof of a duality result of Fujiki. We also deal with the extraordinary cup product.
Variation of mixed Hodge structures(VMHS), introduced by P. Deligne, is a linear structure reflecting the geometry on cohomology of the fibers of an algebraic family, generalizing variation of Hodge structures for smooth proper families, introduced by P. Griffiths. Hence, it is a strong tool to study the variation of the geometric structure of fibers of a morphism. We describe here the degenerating properties of a VMHS of geometric origin and the existence of a relative monodromy filtration, as well the definition and properties of abstract admissible VMHS.
We give three new proofs of a theorem of C. Sabbah asserting that the weight filtration of the limit mixed Hodge structure at infinity of cohomologically tame polynomials coincides with the monodromy filtration up to a certain shift depending on the unipotent or non-unipotent monodromy part.
We prove an analog of Schmid's $\text{\rm SL}_2$-orbit theorem for a class of variations of mixed Hodge structure which includes logarithmic deformations, degenerations of 1-motives and archimedean heights. In particular, as consequence this theorem, we obtain a simple formula for the asymptotic behavior of the archimedean height of a flat family of algebraic cycles which depends only on the weight filtration and local monodromy.
We establish a relationship between the graded quotients of a filtered holonomic D-module, their sheaf-theoretic duals, and the characteristic variety, in case the filtered D-module underlies a polarized Hodge module on a smooth algebraic variety. The proof is based on Saito's result that the associated graded module is Cohen-Macaulay, and on local duality on the cotangent bundle.
Given a family of Laurent polynomials, we will construct a morphism between its (proper) Gauss-Manin system and a direct sum of associated GKZ systems. The kernel and cokernel of this morphism are very simple and consist of free O-modules. The result above enables us to put a mixed Hodge module structure on certain classes of GKZ systems and shows that they have quasi-unipotent monodromy.
We propose a generalization of the notion of ${\bf R}$-split mixed Hodge structure by defining a ${\bf R}$-splitting level for mixed Hodge structures. This is a discrete invariant taking values in positive integers and equal to 0 for ${\bf R}$-split mixed Hodge structures. We describe some properties of this invariant for classical operations on these structures and give some explicit calculation.
We prove that the relative log de Rham cohomology groups of a projective semistable log smooth degeneration admit a natural \textit{limiting} mixed Hodge structure. More precisely, we construct a family of increasing filtrations and a family of nilpotent endomorphisms on the relative log de Rham cohomology groups and show that they satisfy a part of good properties of a nilpotnet orbit in several variables.
Given a compact Riemann surface $\bar{X}$ of genus $g$ and a point $q$ on $\bar{X}$, we consider $X:=\bar{X}\setminus\{q\}$ with a basepoint $p\in X$. The extension of mixed Hodge structures, given by the weights -1 and -2, of the mixed Hodge structure on the fundamental group (in the sense of Hain) is studied. We show that it naturally corresponds on the one hand to the element $(2g q-2 p-K)$ in $\Pic^0(\bar{X})$, where $K$ represents the canonical divisor, and on the other hand to the respective extension of $\bar{X}$. Finally, we prove a pointed Torelli theorem for punctured Riemann surface…
We prove the structure theorem of the intersection complexes of toric varieties in the category of mixed Hodge modules. This theorem is due to Bernstein, Khovanskii and MacPherson for the underlying complexes with rational coefficients. As a corollary the Euler characteristic Hodge numbers of non-degenerate toric hypersurface can be determined by the Euler characteristic subtotal Hodge numbers together with combinatorial data of Newton polyhedra. This is used implicitly in an explicit formula by Batyrev--Borisov. Note that a formula for the Euler characteristic subtotal Hodge numbers in terms …
