Given a compact Riemann surface $\bar{X}$ of genus $g$ and a point $q$ on $\bar{X}$, we consider $X:=\bar{X}\setminus\{q\}$ with a basepoint $p\in X$. The extension of mixed Hodge structures, given by the weights -1 and -2, of the mixed Hodge structure on the fundamental group (in the sense of Hain) is studied. We show that it naturally corresponds on the one hand to the element $(2g q-2 p-K)$ in $\Pic^0(\bar{X})$, where $K$ represents the canonical divisor, and on the other hand to the respective extension of $\bar{X}$. Finally, we prove a pointed Torelli theorem for punctured Riemann surfaces.
We study intersection cohomology of character varieties for punctured Riemann surfaces with prescribed monodromies around the punctures. Relying on previous result from Mellit for semisimple monodromies we compute the intersection cohomology of character varieties with monodromies of any Jordan type. This proves the Poincaré polynomial specialization of a conjecture from Letellier.
Constructing families of abelian varieties of $\text{GL}_2$-type over $4$-punctured complex projective line via $p$-adic Hodge theory and Langlands correspondence and application to algebraic solutions of Painleve VI equation
We study the monodromies and the limit mixed Hodge structures of families of complete intersection varieties over a punctured disk in the complex plane. For this purpose, we express their motivic nearby fibers in terms of the geometric data of some Newton polyhedra. In particular, the limit mixed Hodge numbers and some part of the Jordan normal forms of the monodromies of such a family will be described very explicitly.
The paper presents a proof of the Hodge Riemann relations for the combinatorial intersection cohomology of a polytope, as fist given by K.Karu, in terms of geometric operations on polytopes.
Given an elliptic curve $E$ defined over $\mathbb{C}$, let $E^{\times}$ be an open subset of $E$ obtained by removing a point. In this paper, we show that the $i$-th Betti number of the unordered configuration space $\mathrm{Conf}^{n}(E^{\times})$ of $n$ points on $E^{\times}$ appears as a coefficient of an explicit rational function in two variables. We also compute its Hodge numbers as coefficients of another explicit rational function in four variables. Our result is interesting because these rational functions resemble the generating function of the $\mathbb{F}_{q}$-point counts of $\mathr…
We prove that a variation of graded-polarizable mixed Hodge structure over a punctured disk with unipotent monodromy, has a limiting mixed Hodge structure at the puncture (i.e., it is admissible in the sense of [SZ]) which splits over $\R$, if and only if certain grading of the complexified weight filtration, depending smoothly on the Hodge filtration, extends across the puncture. In particular, the result exactly supplements Schmid's Theorem for pure structures, which holds for the graded variation, and gives a Hodge-theoretic condition for the relative monodromy weight filtration to exist.
Recently Abouzaid, Auroux, Efimov, Katzarkov and Orlov showed that the wrapped Fukaya Categories of punctured spheres and finite unbranched covers of punctured spheres are derived equivalent to the categories of singularities of a superpotential on certain crepant resolutions of toric 3 dimensional singularities. We generalize this result to other punctured Riemann surfaces and reformulate it in terms of certain noncommutative algebras coming from dimer models. In particular, given any consistent dimer model we can look at a subcategory of noncommutative matrix factorizations and show that thi…
We extend the Kuga-Satake construction to the case of limit mixed Hodge structures of K3 type. We use this to study the geometry and Hodge theory of degenerations of Kuga-Satake abelian varieties, associated to polarized variations of K3 type Hodge structures over the punctured disc.
We prove that Schur classes of nef vector bundles are limits of classes that have a property analogous to the Hodge-Riemann bilinear relations. We give a number of applications, including (1) new log-concavity statements about characteristic classes of nef vector bundles (2) log-concavity statements about Schur and related polynomials (3) another proof that normalized Schur polynomials are Lorentzian.
We show that one can define a spectral curve for the Cauchy-Riemann operator on a punctured elliptic curve if one imposes appropriate boundary conditions. Algebraic curves of the type thus obtained appear as irreducible components of spectral curves of minimal tori with planar ends in R^3. It appears that these curves coincide with the spectral curves of certain elliptic KP solitons as studied by Krichever.
We construct infinitely many non-isotrivial families of abelian varieties over given four punctured projective lines. These families lead to algebraic solutions of Painleve VI equation. Finally, based on a recent paper by Lin-Sheng-Wang, we prove a complete characterization for the locus of motivic Higgs bundles in the moduli space as fixed points of an ``additive'' self-map. This is a note based on the lecture given by the second named author on 04 Nov. 2022 at Tsinghua University.
Inductive formulas for the Betti numbers of the moduli spaces of stable holomorphic vector bundles of coprime rank and degree over a fixed Riemann surface of genus at least two were obtained by Harder, Narasimhan, Desale and Ramanan using number theoretic methods and the Weil conjectures and were rederived by Atiyah and Bott using gauge theory. In this note we observe that there are similar inductive formulas for determining the Hodge numbers of these moduli spaces.
For singular metrics, there is no Quillen metric formalism on cohomology determinant. In this paper, we develop an admissible theory, with which the arithmetic Deligne-Riemann-Roch isometry can be established for singular metrics. As an application, we first study Weil-Petersson metrics and Takhtajan-Zograf metrics on moduli spaces of punctured Riemann surfaces, and then give a more geometric interpretation of our determinant metrics in terms of Selberg zeta functions. We end this paper by proposing an arithmetic factorization for Weil-Petersson metrics, cuspidal metrics and Selberg zeta funct…
For a variation of Hodge structure over a punctured disk, Green, Griffiths and Kerr introduced a Néron model which is a Hausdorff space that includes values of admissible normal functions. On the other hand, Kato, Nakayama and Usui introduced a Néron model as a logarithmic manifold using log mixed Hodge theory. This work constructs a homeomorphism between these two models.
Statements analogous to the Hard Lefschetz Theorem (HLT) and the Hodge-Riemann bilinear relations (HRR) hold in a variety of contexts: they impose restrictions on the cohomology algebra of a smooth compact Kähler manifold or on the intersection cohomology of a projective toric variety; they restrict the local monodromy of a polarized variation of Hodge structure; they impose conditions on the possible $f$-vectors of convex polytopes. While the statements of these theorems depend on the choice of a Kähler class, or its analog, there is usually a cone of possible Kähler classes. It is then natur…
This article gives a survey of recent results on a generalization of the notion of a Hodge structure. The main example is related to the Fourier-Laplace transform of a variation of polarizable Hodge structure on the punctured affine line, like the Gauss-Manin systems of a proper or tame algebraic function on a smooth quasi-projective variety. Variations of non-commutative Hodge structures often occur on the tangent bundle of Frobenius manifolds, giving rise to a tt* geometry.
Using heat kernel methods developed by Vaillant, a local index formula is obtained for families of d-bar operators on the Teichmuller universal curve of Riemann surfaces of genus g with n punctures. The formula also holds on the moduli space M{g,n} in the sense of orbifolds where it can be written in terms of Mumford-Morita-Miller classes. The degree two part of the formula gives the curvature of the corresponding determinant line bundle equipped with the Quillen connection, a result originally obtained by Takhtajan and Zograf.
We prove the Hodge-Riemann bilinear relations, the hard Lefschetz theorem and the Lefschetz decomposition for compact Kahler manifolds in the mixed situation.
Motivated by our previous work on Hodge-index type inequalities, we give a form of mixed Hodge-Riemann bilinear relation by using the notion of $m$-positivity, whose proof is an adaptation of the works of Timorin and Dinh-Nguyên. This mixed Hodge-Riemann bilinear relation holds with respect to mixed polarizations in which some satisfy particular positivity condition, but could be degenerate along some directions. In particular, it applies to fibrations of compact Kähler manifolds.
We prove a version of the Hodge-Riemann bilinear relations for Schur polynomials of Kähler forms and for Schur polynomials of positive forms on a complex vector space.
Finite matroids are combinatorial structures that express the concept of linear independence. In 1964, G.-C. Rota conjectured that the coefficients of the "characteristic polynomial" of a matroid $M$, polynomial whose coefficients enumerate its subsets of given rank, form a log-concave sequence. K. Adiprasito, J. Huh et E. Katz have proved this conjecture using methods which, although entirely combinatorial, are inspired by algebraic geometry. From the Bergman fan of the matroid $M$, they define a graded "Chow ring" $A(M)$ for which they prove analogs of the Poincaré duality, the Hard Lefschet…
Let $X$ be a $d$ dimensional projective manifold, $E$ be an ample vector bundle on $X$ and $0\le λ_N\le λ_{N-1} \le \cdots \le λ_1 \le \operatorname{rank}(E)$ be a partition of $d-2$. We prove that the Schur class $s_λ(E)\in H^{d-2,d-2}(X)$ has the Hard Lefschetz property and satisfies the Hodge-Riemann bilinear relations. As a consequence we obtain various new inequalities between characteristic classes of ample vector bundles, including a higher-rank version of the Khovanskii-Teissier inequalities.
For a family of Jacobians of smooth pointed curves there is a notion of tautological algebra. There is an action of $\mathfrak{sl}_2$ on this algebra. We define and study a lifting of the Polishchuk operator, corresponding to $f\in \mathfrak{sl}_2$, on an algebra consisting of punctured Riemann surfaces. As an application we prove that a collection of tautological relations on moduli of curves, discovered by Faber and Zagier, come from a class of relations on the universal Jacobian.
We review Hodge structures, relating filtrations, Galois Theory and Jordan-Holder structures. The prototypical case of periods of Riemann surfaces is compared with the Galois-Artin framework of algebraic numbers.
Why do natural and interesting sequences often turn out to be log-concave? We give one of many possible explanations, from the viewpoint of "standard conjectures". We illustrate with several examples from combinatorics.
Let $X$ be a compact Riemann surface, $Σ$ a finite set of points and $M = X\setminus Σ$. We study the $L^2$ cohomology of a polarized complex variation of Hodge structure on a Galois covering of the Riemann surface of finite type $M$. In this article we treat the case when the covering comes from a branched covering of $X$, and where $M$ is endowed with a metric asymptotic to a Poincaré metric. We prove that after tensorisation with the algebra of affiliated operators, the $L^2$ cohomology admits a pure Hodge structure.
The Hard Lefschetz theorem for intersection cohomology of nonrational polytopes was recently proved by K. Karu [Ka]. This theorem implies the conjecture of R. Stanley on the unimodularity of the generalized $h$-vector. In this paper we strengthen Karu's theorem by introducing a canonical bilinear form $(\cdot ,\cdot)_Φ$ on the intersection cohomology $IH(Φ)$ of a complete fan $Φ$ and proving the Hodge-Riemann bilinear relations for $(\cdot ,\cdot)_Φ$.
If X is a complex projective variety with klt singularities, then the mixed Hodge structures on the first two singular cohomology groups are pure. We describe the pieces of the Hodge decomposition in terms of reflexive differential forms. Applications include a Lefschetz (1,1) Theorem and a weak analogue of the Hodge-Riemann bilinear relations for klt varieties.
We consider the residual B-model variation of Hodge structure of Iritani defined by a family of toric Calabi--Yau hypersurfaces over a punctured disk $D \setminus \{ 0\}$. It is naturally extended to a logarithmic variation of polarized Hodge structure of Kato--Usui on the whole disk $D$. By restricting it to the origin, we obtain a polarized logarithmic Hodge structure (PLH) on the standard log point. In this paper, we describe the PLH in terms of the integral affine structure of the dual intersection complex of the toric degeneration in the Gross--Siebert program.
Let $f:\mathbb{C}^{n+1} \to \mathbb{C}$ be a germ of hypersurface with isolated singularity. One can associate to $f$ a polarized variation of mixed Hodge structure $\mathcal{H}$ over the punctured disc, where the Hodge filtration is the limit Hodge filtration of W. Schmid and J. Steenbrink. By the work of M. Saito and P. Deligne the VMHS associated to cohomologies of the fibers of $f$ can be extended over the degenerate point $0$ of disc. The new fiber obtained in this way is isomorphic to the module of relative differentials of $f$ denoted $Ω_f$. A mixed Hodge structure can be defined on $Ω_…
We show that the limit, by rescaling, of the `new supersymmetric index' attached to the Fourier-Laplace transform of a polarized variation of Hodge structure on a punctured affine line is equal to the spectral polynomial attached to the same object. We also extend the definition by Deligne of a Hodge filtration on the de Rham cohomology of a exponentially twisted polarized variation of complex Hodge structure and prove a E_1 degeneration property for it.
The hyperbolic metric for the punctured unit disc in the Euclidean plane is singular at the origin. A renormalization of the metric at the origin is provided by the Euclidean metric. For Riemann surfaces there is a unique germ for the isometry class of a complete hyperbolic metric at a cusp. The renormalization for the punctured unit disc provides a renormalization for a hyperbolic metric at a cusp. For a holomorphic family of punctured Riemann surfaces the family of (co)tangent spaces along a puncture defines a tautological holomorphic line bundle over the base of the family. The Hermitian co…
We provide a formula describing the G-module structure of the Hurwitz-Hodge bundle for admissible G-covers in terms of the Hodge bundle of the base curve, and more generally, for describing the G-module structure of the push-forward to the base of any sheaf on a family of admissible G-covers. This formula can be interpreted as a representation-ring-valued relative Riemann-Hurwitz formula for families of admissible G-covers.
The subject of the present work is the de Rham part of non-commutative Hodge structures on the periodic cyclic homology of differential graded algebras and categories. We discuss explicit formulas for the corresponding connection on the periodic cyclic homology viewed as a bundle over the punctured formal disk. Our main result says that for the category of matrix factorizations of a polynomial the formulas reproduce, up to a certain shift, a well-known connection on the associated twisted de Rham cohomology which plays a central role in the geometric approach to the Hodge theory of isolated si…
We fix integers $k> 0$ and $n>0$. For a $k$-punctured Riemann surface $Σ\setminus \{ p_1,\ldots,p_k \}$ and a $k$-tuple $\boldsymbolμ=(μ^1,\ldots,μ^k)$ of partitions of $n$, we can define the character variety of type $\boldsymbolμ$. In this paper, we consider the case where $Σ=\mathbb{P}^1$ and $\boldsymbolμ$ is indivisible (i.e. $\mathrm{g.c.d.}(\boldsymbolμ)=1$). For the case, we prove the purity conjecture due to Hausel, that is, the pure parts of the mixed Hodge structures of the character variety is isomorphic to the ordinary rational cohomology groups of the quiver variety of type $\bol…
We prove the hard Lefschetz theorem and the Hodge-Riemann relations for a commutative ring associated to an arbitrary matroid M. We use the Hodge-Riemann relations to resolve a conjecture of Heron, Rota, and Welsh that postulates the log-concavity of the coefficients of the characteristic polynomial of M. We furthermore conclude that the f-vector of the independence complex of a matroid forms a log-concave sequence, proving a conjecture of Mason and Welsh for general matroids.
The nonabelian Hodge correspondence for vector bundles over noncompact curves is adequately described by implementing a weighted filtration on the objects involved. In order to establish a full correspondence between a Dolbeault and a de Rham space for a general complex reductive group $G$, we introduce torsors given by parahoric group schemes in the sense of Bruhat--Tits. Combined with existing results on the Riemann--Hilbert correspondence for logarithmic parahoric connections, this gives a full nonabelian Hodge correspondence from Higgs bundles to fundamental group representations over a no…
This proceedings note introduces aspects of the authors' work relating mirror symmetry and integral variations of Hodge structure. The emphasis is on their classification of the integral variations of Hodge structure which can underly families of Calabi-Yau threefolds over the thrice-punctured sphere with b^3 = 4, or equivalently h^{2,1} = 1, and the related issues of geometric realization of these variations. The presentation parallels that of the first author's talk at the BIRS workshop.
In this paper we study the relation between parabolic Higgs bundles and irreducible representations of the fundamental group of punctured Riemann surfaces established by Simpson. We generalize a result of Hitchin, identifying those parabolic Higgs bundles that correspond to Fuchsian representations. We also study the Higgs bundles that give representations whose image is contained, after conjugation, in SL($k,\Bbb R$). We compute the real dimension of one of the components of this space of representations, which in the absence of punctures is the generalized Teichmüller space introduced by Hit…
We study the moduli space of Higgs bundles on a compact Riemann surface. It was shown by Thaddeus and Hausel (in rank 2) and Markman (in general rank) that the rational cohomology ring of this space is generated by universal classes. In this paper, we use their results to compute the Hodge structure on the cohomology of this moduli space. We show that the natural Hodge structure on H^k is pure of weight k.
In this paper we establish a version of homological mirror symmetry for punctured Riemann surfaces. Following a proposal of Kontsevich we model A-branes on a punctured surface $Σ$ via the topological Fukaya category. We prove that the topological Fukaya category of $Σ$ is equivalent to the category of matrix factorizations of the mirror LG model $(X,W)$. Along the way we establish new gluing results for the topological Fukaya category of punctured surfaces which might be of independent interest.
In this paper we study the $\mathbb{C}^*$-fixed points in moduli spaces of Higgs bundles over a compact Riemann surface for a complex semisimple Lie group and its real forms. These fixed points are called Hodge bundles and correspond to complex variations of Hodge structure. We introduce a topological invariant for Hodge bundles that generalizes the Toledo invariant appearing for Hermitian Lie groups. A main result of this paper is a bound on this invariant which generalizes both the Milnor-Wood inequality of the Hermitian case and the Arakelov inequalities of classical variations of Hodge str…
We compute the sum of the positive Lyapunov exponents of the Hodge bundle with respect to the Teichmuller geodesic flow. The computation is based on the analytic Riemann-Roch Theorem and uses a comparison of determinants of flat and hyperbolic Laplacians when the underlying Riemann surface degenerates.
The results of this paper can be divided into two parts, geometric and arithmetic. Let $X$ be a smooth projective curve over $\mathbb{C}$, and $e,\infty\in X(\mathbb{C})$ be distinct points. Let $L_n$ be the mixed Hodge structure of functions on $π_1(X-\{\infty\},e)$ given by iterated integrals of length $\leq n$ (as defined by Hain). In the geometric part, inspired by a work of Darmon, Rotger, and Sols, we express the mixed Hodge extension $\mathbb{E}^\infty_{n,e}$ given by the weight filtration on $\frac{L_n}{L_{n-2}}$ in terms of certain null-homologous algebraic cycles on $X^{2n-1}$. As a …
We use algebraic methods to compute the simple Hurwitz numbers for arbitrary source and target Riemann surfaces. For an elliptic curve target, we reproduce the results previously obtained by string theorists. Motivated by the Gromov-Witten potentials, we find a general generating function for the simple Hurwitz numbers in terms of the representation theory of the symmetric group S_n. We also find a generating function for Hodge integrals on the moduli space M_{g,2} of Riemann surfaces with two marked points, similar to that found by Faber and Pandharipande for the case of one marked point.
In this paper we describe a connection between realizations of the action of the motivic Galois group on the motivic fundamental groups of Gaussian and Eisenstein elliptic curves punctured at the $\mathfrak{p}$-torsion points, $π_1^{\rm Mot}(E-E[\mathfrak{p}],v_0)$, and the geometry of the Bianchi hyperbolic threefolds $Γ_1(\mathfrak{p})\setminus\mathbb{H}^3$, where $Γ_1(\mathfrak{p})$ is a congruence subgroup of ${\rm GL}_2({\rm End}(E))$. The first instance of such a connection was found by A.Goncharov (arXiv:math/0510310). In particular, we study the Hodge realization of the image of the ab…
Let R be an isolated hypersurface singularity, and let M and N be finitely generated R-modules. As R is a hypersurface, the torsion modules of M against N are eventually periodic of period two (i.e., Tor_i^R(M,N) is isomorphic to Tor_{i+2}^R(M,N) for i sufficiently large). Since R has only an isolated singularity, these torsion modules are of finite length for i sufficiently large. The theta invariant of the pair (M,N) is defined by Hochster to be length(Tor_{2i}^R(M,N)) - length(Tor_{2i+1}^R(M,N)) for i sufficiently large. H. Dao has conjectured that the theta invariant is zero for all pairs …
