Using heat kernel methods developed by Vaillant, a local index formula is obtained for families of d-bar operators on the Teichmuller universal curve of Riemann surfaces of genus g with n punctures. The formula also holds on the moduli space M{g,n} in the sense of orbifolds where it can be written in terms of Mumford-Morita-Miller classes. The degree two part of the formula gives the curvature of the corresponding determinant line bundle equipped with the Quillen connection, a result originally obtained by Takhtajan and Zograf.
We derive a precise asymptotic expansion of the complete Kähler-Einstein metric on the punctured Riemann sphere with three or more omitting points. By using Schwarzian derivative, we prove that the coefficients of the expansion are polynomials on the two parameters which are uniquely determined by the omitting points. Futhermore, we use the modular form and Schwarzian derivative to explicitly determine the coefficients in the expansion of the complete Kähler-Einstein metric for punctured Riemann sphere with $3, 4, 6$ or $12$ omitting points.
In this paper we consider a punctured Riemann surface endowed with a Hermitian metric that equals the Poincar{é} metric near the punctures, and a holomorphic line bundle that polarizes the metric. We show that the quotient of the Bergman kernel of high tensor powers of the line bundle and of the Bergman kernel of the Poincar{é} model near the singularity tends to one up to arbitrary negative powers of the tensor power.
In this paper we consider a punctured Riemann surface endowed with a Hermitian metric which equals the Poincaré metric near the punctures and a holomorphic line bundle which polarizes the metric. We show that the Bergman kernel can be localized around the singularities and its local model is the Bergman kernel of the punctured unit disc endowed with the standard Poincaré metric. As a consequence, we obtain an optimal uniform estimate of the supremum norm of the Bergman kernel, involving a fractional growth order of the tensor power.
We propose a conjecture that the monodromy group of a singular hyperbolic metric on a non-hyperbolic Riemann surface is {\it Zariski dense} in ${\rm PSL}(2,\,{\Bbb R})$. By using meromorphic differentials and affine connections, we obtain an evidence of the conjecture that the monodromy group of the singular hyperbolic metric can not be contained in four classes of one-dimensional Lie subgroups of ${\rm PSL}(2,\,{\Bbb R})$. Moreover, we confirm the conjecture if the Riemann surface is either one of the once punctured Riemann sphere, the twice punctured Riemann sphere, a once punctured torus an…
Using the techniques developed in \cite{SunSun}, we give estimations of the Bergman kernel of the punctured disk with the standard complete Poincaré metric. As an application, we improve the result of \cite{AMM} on the Bergman kernels of punctured Riemann surfaces near singularities.
In this paper, we construct polynomial growth harmonic maps from once-punctured Riemann surfaces of any finite genus to any even-sided, regular, ideal polygon in the hyperbolic plane. We also establish their uniqueness within a class of maps which differ by exponentially decaying variations. Previously, harmonic maps from once-punctured spheres to the hyperbolic plane have been parameterized by holomorphic quadratic differentials on the complex plane. Our harmonic maps, mapping a genus g>1 domain to a k-sided polygon, correspond to meromorphic quadratic differentials having one pole of order (…
In classical differential geometry, a central question has been whether abstract surfaces with given geometric features can be realized as surfaces in Euclidean space. Inspired by the rich theory of embedded triply periodic minimal surfaces, we seek examples of triply periodic polyhedral surfaces that have an identifiable conformal structure. In particular, we are interested in explicit cone metrics on compact Riemann surfaces that have a realization as the quotient of a triply periodic polyhedral surface. This is important as Riemann surfaces where one has equivalent descriptions are rare. We…
We present some results about harmonic maps with possibly infinite energy from punctured Riemann surfaces to CAT(0) spaces. In particular, we give precise estimates of their energy growth near the punctures and prove their uniqueness.
For a smooth immersion $f$ from the punctured disk $D\backslash\{0\}$ into $\mathbb{R}^n$ extendable continuously at the puncture, if its mean curvature is square integrable and the measure of $f(D)\cap B_{r_k}=o(r_k)$ for a sequence $r_k\to 0$, we show that the Riemannian surface $(D_r\backslash\{0\},g)$ where $g$ is the induced metric is conformally equivalent to the unit Euclidean punctured disk, for any $r\in(0,1)$. For a locally $W^{2,2}$ Lipschitz immersion $f$ from the punctured disk $D_2\backslash\{0\}$ into $\mathbb{R}^n$, if $\|\nabla f\|_{L^\infty}$ is finite and the second fundamen…
In this paper, we extend the construction of pressure metrics to Teichmüller spaces of surfaces with punctures. This construction recovers Thurston's Riemannian metric on Teichmüller spaces. Moreover, we prove the real analyticity and the convexity of Manhattan curves of the finite area type-preserving Fuchsian representations, and thus we obtain several related entropy rigidity results. Lastly, relating the two topics mentioned above, we show that one can derive the pressure metric by varying Manhattan curves.
Let $M$ be the moduli space of rank 3 parabolic vector bundles over a Riemann surface with several punctures. By the Mehta-Seshadri correspondence, this is the space of rank 3 unitary representations of the fundamental group of the punctured surface with specified conjugacy classes of the images of each boundary component, up to conjugation by elements of the unitary group. For each puncture we consider the torus bundle on $M$ consisting of those representations where the image of the corresponding boundary component is a fixed element of the torus. We associate line bundles to these torus bun…
Given a compact Riemann surface $Y$ and a positive integer $m$, Narasimhan and Simha defined a measure on $Y$ associated to the $m$-th tensor power of the canonical line bundle. We study the limit of this measure on holomorphic families of Riemann surfaces with semistable reduction. The convergence takes place on a hybrid space whose central fiber is the associated metrized curve complex in the sense of Amini and Baker. We also study the limit of the measure induced by the Hermitian pairing defined by the Narasimhan-Simha measure. For $m = 1$, both these measures coincide with the Bergman meas…
We define and study the renormalized volume for geometrically finite hyperbolic $3$-manifolds, including with rank-$1$ cusps. We prove a variation formula, and show that for certain families of convex co-compact hyperbolic metrics $g_\eps$ degenerating to a geometrically finite hyperbolic metric $g_0$ with rank-$1$ cusps, the renormalized volume converges to the renormalized volume of the limiting metric.
We study parabolic G-Higgs bundles over a compact Riemann surface with fixed punctures, when G is a real reductive Lie group, and establish a correspondence between these objects and representations of the fundamental group of the punctured surface in G with arbitrary holonomy around the punctures. Three interesting features are the relation between the parabolic degree and the geometry of the Tits boundary, the treatment of the case when the logarithm of the monodromy is on the boundary of a Weyl alcove, and the correspondence of the orbits encoding the singularity via the Kostant-Sekiguchi c…
Extending the Labourie-Loftin correspondence, we establish, on any punctured oriented surface of finite type, a one-to-one correspondence between convex projective structures with specific types of ends and punctured Riemann surface structures endowed with meromorphic cubic differentials whose poles are at the punctures. This generalizes previous results of Loftin, Benoist-Hulin and Dumas-Wolf.
In this paper we investigate the moduli space of parabolic Higgs bundles over a punctured Riemann surface with varying weights at the punctures. We show that the harmonic metric depends analytically on the weights and the stable Higgs bundle. This gives a Higgs bundle generalisation of a theorem of McOwen on the existence of hyperbolic cone metrics on a punctured surface within a given conformal class, and a generalisation of a theorem of Judge on the analytic parametrisation of these metrics.
Let $(E,\overline{\partial}_E,θ)$ be a stable Higgs bundle of degree $0$ on a compact connected Riemann surface. Once we fix the flat metric $h_{\det(E)}$ on the determinant of $E$, we have the harmonic metrics $h_t$ $(t>0)$ for the stable Higgs bundles $(E,\overline{\partial}_E,tθ)$ such that $\det(h_t)=h_{\det(E)}$. We study the behaviour of $h_t$ when $t$ goes to $\infty$. First, we show that the Hitchin equation is asymptotically decoupled under the assumption that the Higgs field is generically regular semisimple. We apply it to the study of the so called Hitchin WKB-problem. Second, we s…
Let $M$ be a closed Riemannian surface of genus $g$. We construct a family of 1-cycles on $M$ that represents a non-trivial element of the k'th homology group of the space of cycles and such that the mass of each cycle is bounded above by $C \max\{\sqrt{k}, \sqrt{g}\} \sqrt{Area(M)}$. This result is optimal up to a multiplicative constant.
The closed string field theory minimal-area problem asks for the conformal metric of least area on a Riemann surface with the condition that all non-contractible closed curves have length at least 2π. Through every point in such a metric there is a geodesic that saturates the length condition, and saturating geodesics in a given homotopy class form a band. The extremal metric is unknown when bands of geodesics cross, as it happens for surfaces of non-zero genus. We use recently proposed convex programs to numerically find the minimal-area metric on the square torus with a square boundary, for …
We introduce a compactification of the space of simple positive divisors on a Riemann surface, as well as a compactification of the universal family of punctured surfaces above this space. These are real manifolds with corners. We then study the space of constant curvature metrics on this Riemann surface with prescribed conical singularities at these divisors. Our interest here is in the local deformation for these metrics, and in particular the behavior as conic points coalesce. We prove a sharp regularity theorem for this phenomenon in the regime where these metrics are known to exist. This …
We classify Riemannian surfaces admitting associated families in three dimensional homogeneous spaces with four-dimensional isometry groups and in a wide family of (semi-Riemannian) warped products, with an extra natural condition (namely, rotating structure vector field). We prove that, provided the surface is not totally umbilical, such families exist in both cases if, and only if, the ambient manifold is a product and the surface is minimal. In particular, there exists no associated families of surfaces with rotating structure vector field in the Heisenberg group.
The Weil-Petersson and Takhtajan-Zograf metrics on the Riemann moduli spaces of complex structures for an $n$-fold punctured oriented surface of genus $g,$ in the stable range $g+2n>2,$ are shown here to have complete asymptotic expansions in terms of Fenchel-Nielsen coordinates at the exceptional divisors of the Knudsen-Deligne-Mumford compactification. This is accomplished by finding a full expansion for the hyperbolic metrics on the fibers of the universal curve as they approach the complete metrics on the nodal curves above the exceptional divisors and then using a push-forward theorem for…
