The theory of weak solutions for nonlinear conservation laws is now well developed in the case of scalar equations [3] and for one-dimensional hyperbolic systems [1, 2]. For systems in several space dimensions, however, even the global existence of solutions to the Cauchy problem remains a challenging open question. In this note we construct a conterexample showing that, even for a simple class of hyperbolic systems, in two space dimensions the Cauchy problem can be ill posed.
Ivrii's conjecture asserts that the Cauchy problem is $C^{\infty}$ well-posed for any lower order term if every critical point of the principal symbol is effectively hyperbolic. Effectively hyperbolic critical point is at most triple characteristic. If every characteristic is at most double this conjecture has been proved in 1980's. In this paper we prove the conjecture for the remaining cases, that is for operators with triple effectively hyperbolic characteristics.
In this article the unique solution of the Cauchy problem is founded by the Riemann method. Some relations for given here confluent hypergeometric functions of two and three variables are used.
We study effectively hyperbolic operators $P$ with triple characteristics points lying on $t= 0$. Under some conditions on the principal symbol of $P$ one proves that the Cauchy problem for $P$ in $[0, T] \times U$ is well posed for every choice of lower order terms. Our results improves those in [11] since we don't assume the condition (E) of [11] satisfied.
An asymptotic expansion with respect to a small parameter of a singularly perturbed system of hyperbolic equations, describing vibrations of two rigidly connected strings is constructed. Under certain conditions imposed on these problems, the principal term of the asymptotic expansion of the solution is described by the Korteweg-de Vries equation.
For a homogeneous polynomial $p$ in $ξ\in {\bf R}^n$ with Gevrey coefficients, it is known that the Cauchy problem for any realization of $p$ is well-posed in the Gevrey class of order $s<2$ if the characteristic roots are real. In this note, we give examples showing the situation of the converse direction, in particular the optimality of the Gevrey order $s=2$.
We study the Cauchy problem for effectively hyperbolic operators $P$ with principal symbol $p(t, x,τ,ξ)$ having triple characteristics on $t = 0$. Under a condition (E) we show that such operators are strongly hyperbolic, that is the Cauchy problem is well posed for $p(t, x,D_t, D_x) + Q(t, x, D_t, D_x)$ with arbitrary lower order term $Q$. The proof is based on energy estimates with weight $t^{-N}$ for a first order pseudo-differential system, where $N$ depends on lower order terms. For our analysis we construct a non-negative definite symmetrizer $S(t)$ and we prove a version of Fefferman-Ph…
The present paper concerns the well-posedness of the Cauchy problem for microlocally symmetrizable hyperbolic systems whose coefficients and symmetrizer are log-Lipschitz continuous, uniformly in time and space variables. For the global in space problem we establish energy estimates with finite loss of derivatives, which is linearly increasing in time. This implies well-posedness in $H^\infty$, if the coefficients enjoy enough smoothness in $x$. From this result, by standard arguments (i.e. extension and convexification) we deduce also local existence and uniqueness. A huge part of the analysi…
In this article we deal with stochastic perturbation of degenerate parabolic partial differential equations (PDEs). The particular emphasise is on analysing the effect of multiplicative Lévy noise to such problems and establishing wellposedness by developing a suitable weak entropy solution framework. The proof of existence is based on the vanishing viscosity technique. The uniqueness is settled by interpreting Kruzkov's doubling technique in the presence noise.
We study the Cauchy problem of a $3\times 3$ system of conservation laws modeling two--phase flow of polymer flooding in rough porous media with possibly discontinuous permeability function. The system loses strict hyperbolicity in some regions of the domain where the eigenvalues of different families coincide, and BV estimates are not available in general. For a suitable $2\times 2$ system, a singular change of variable introduced by Temple could be effective to control the total variation. An extension of this technique can be applied to a $3\times 3$ system only under strict hypotheses on t…
We study a class of hyperbolic Cauchy problems, associated with linear operators and systems with polynomially bounded coefficients, variable multiplicities and involutive characteristics, globally defined on R^n. We prove well-posedness in Sobolev-Kato spaces, with loss of smoothness and decay at infinity. We also obtain results about propagation of singularities, in terms of wave-front sets describing the evolution of both smoothness and decay singularities of temperate distributions. Moreover, we can prove the existence of random-field solutions for the associated stochastic Cauchy problems…
We consider the strictly hyperbolic Cauchy problem \begin{align*} &D_t^m u - \sum\limits_{j = 0}^{m-1} \sum\limits_{|γ|+j = m} a_{m-j,\,γ}(t,\,x) D_x^γD_t^j u = 0, \newline &D_t^{k-1}u(0,\,x) = g_k(x),\,k = 1,\,\ldots,\,m, \end{align*} for $(t,\,x) \in [0,\,T]\times \mathbb{R}^n$ with coefficients belonging to the Zygmund class $C^s_\ast$ in $x$ and having a modulus of continuity below Lipschitz in $t$. Imposing additional conditions to control oscillations, we obtain a global (on $[0,\,T]$) $L^2$ energy estimate without loss of derivatives for $s \geq \{1+\varepsilon,\,\frac{2m_0}{2-m_0}\}$, …
This paper studies the Cauchy problem for variable coefficient weakly hyperbolic first order systems of partial differential operators. The hyperbolicity assumption is that for each $t, x$ the principal symbol is hyperbolic. No hypothesis is imposed on lower order terms. For coefficients and Cauchy data sufficiently Gevrey regular the Cauchy problem has a unique sufficiently Gevrey regular solution. We prove stability and error estimates for the spectral Crank-Nicholson scheme. Approximate solutions can be computed with accuracy $epsilon$ in the supremum norm with cost growing at most polynomi…
We consider the Cauchy problem for weakly hyperbolic $m$-th order partial differential equations with coefficients low-regular in time and smooth in space. It is well-known that in general one has to impose Levi conditions to get $C^\infty$ or Gevrey well-posedness even if the coefficients are smooth. We use moduli of continuity to describe the regularity of the coefficients with respect to time, weight sequences for the characterization of their regularity with respect to space and weight functions to define the solution spaces. Furthermore, we propose a generalized Levi condition that models…
We discuss the well-posedness of the Cauchy problem for hyperbolic operators with double characteristics which changes from non-effectively hyperbolic to effectively hyperbolic, on the double characteristic manifold, across a submanifold of codimension 1. We assume that there is no bicharacteristic tangent to the double characteristic manifold and the spatial dimension is 2. Then we prove the well-posedness of the Cauchy problem in all Gevrey classes assuming, on the double characteristic manifold, that the ratio of the imaginary part of the subprincipal symbol to the real eigenvalue of the Ha…
The goal of this paper is to establish a global well-posedness, cone condition and loss of regularity for singular hyperbolic equations with coefficients in { $L^1((0,T];C^\infty(\mathbb{R}^n)) \cap C^1((0,T];C^\infty(\mathbb{R}^n))$} and Cauchy data in an appropriate Sobolev space tailored to a metric on the phase space. The coefficients are unbounded near the singular hyperplane $t=0$ and polynomially growing as $|x| \to \infty.$ The singular behavior is characterized by the blow-up rate of the coefficients and their first $t$-derivatives near $t=0.$ In order to study the interplay of the si…
In this paper we discuss an extension of some results obtained by E. Serra and P. Tilli, in [Serra&Tilli '12, Serra&Tilli '16], concerning an original conjecture by E. De Giorgi ([De Giorgi '96, De Giorgi '06]) on a purely minimization approach to the Cauchy problem for the defocusing nonlinear wave equation. Precisely, we show how to extend the techniques developed by Serra and Tilli for homogeneous hyperbolic nonlinear PDEs to the nonhomogeneous case, thus proving that the idea of De Giorgi yields in fact an effective approach to investigate general hyperbolic equations.
The goal of this paper is to establish a global well-posedness for a broad class of strictly hyperbolic Cauchy problems with coefficients in $C^2((0,T];C^\infty(\mathbb{R}^n))$ growing polynomially in $x$ and singular in $t$. The problems we study are of strictly hyperbolic type with respect to a generic weight and a metric on the phase space. The singular behavior is captured by the blow-up of the first and second $t$-derivatives of the coefficients which allows the coefficients to be either logarithmic-type or oscillatory-type near $t=0$. To arrive at an energy estimate, we perform a conjuga…
We prove that, for first-order, fully nonlinear systems of partial differential equations, under an hypothesis of ellipticity for the principal symbol, the Cauchy problem has no solution within a range of Sobolev indices depending on the regularity of the initial datum. This gives a new and greatly detailed proof of a result of G. Métivier [{\it Remarks on the Cauchy problem}, 2005]. We then extend this result to systems experiencing a transition from hyperbolicity and ellipticity, in the spirit of recent work by N. Lerner, Y. Morimoto, and C.-J. Xu, [{\it Instability of the Cauchy-Kovalevskay…
In this paper we study first order hyperbolic systems with multiple characteristics (weakly hyperbolic) and time-dependent analytic coefficients. The main question is when the Cauchy problem for such systems is well-posed in $C^{\infty}$ and in $\mathcal{D}'$. We prove that the analyticity of the coefficients combined with suitable hypotheses on the eigenvalues guarantee the $C^\infty$ well-posedness of the corresponding Cauchy problem. This result is an extension to systems of the analogous results for scalar equations recently obtained by Jannelli and Taglialatela in \cite{JT} and by the aut…
We discuss inverse problems to finding the time-dependent coefficient for the multidimensional Cauchy problems for both strictly hyperbolic equations and polyharmonic heat equations. We also extend our techniques to the general inverse Cauchy problems for evolution equations.
The Cauchy-Dirichlet problem for the Moore-Gibson-Thompson equation is analyzed. With the focus on non-homogeneous boundary data, two approaches are offered: one is based on the theory of hyperbolic equations, while the other one uses the theory of operator semigroups. This is a mixed hyperbolic problem with a characteristic spatial boundary. Hence, the regularity results exhibit some deficiencies when compared with the non-characteristic case.
In this paper, we derive the large-time profile of solutions to the Cauchy problem of a hyperbolic-parabolic system modeling the vasculogenesis in $\R^3$. When the initial data are prescribed in the vicinity of a constant ground state, by constructing a time-frequency Lyapunov functional and employing the Fourier energy method and spectral analysis, we show that solution of the Cauchy problem tend time-asymptotically to linear diffusion waves around the constant ground state with algebraic decaying rates under certain conditions on the density-dependent pressure function.
For first-order quasi-linear systems of partial differential equations, we formulate an assumption of a transition from initial hyperbolicity to ellipticity. This assumption bears on the principal symbol of the first-order operator. Under such an assumption, we prove a strong Hadamard instability for the associated Cauchy problem, namely an instantaneous defect of Hölder continuity of the flow from $G^σ$ to $L^2$, with $0 < σ< σ_0$, the limiting Gevrey index $σ_0$ depending on the nature of the transition. We restrict here to scalar transitions, and non-scalar transitions in which the boundary…
The goal of this paper is to study global well-posedness, cone of dependence and loss of regularity of the solutions to a class of strictly hyperbolic equations with coefficients displaying "mild" blow-up of sublogarithmic order - $|\ln t|^γ,γ\in(0,1).$ The problems we study are of strictly hyperbolic type with respect to a generic weight and a metric on the phase space. The coefficients are polynomially bound in $x$ with their $x$-derivatives and $t$-derivative of order $O(t^{-δ}),δ\in [0,1),$ and $O(t^{-1}|\ln t|^{γ-1}), γ\in(0,1),$ respectively. We employ the Planck function associated with…
We investigate the behavior of the solutions of a class of certain strictly hyperbolic equations defined on $[0,T]\times \R^n$ in relation to a class of metrics on the phase space. In particular, we study the global regularity and decay issues of the solution to an equation with coefficients polynomially bound in $x$ and with their $t$-derivative of order $\textnormal{O}(t^{-q}),$ where $q \in \big[1,\frac{3}{2}\big)$. For this purpose, an appropriate generalized symbol class based on the metric is defined and the associated Planck function is used to define an infinite order operator to perfo…
For a degenerate hyperbolic equation of the second kind, and with a spectral parameter are studied the Cauchy problem, Cauchy-Goursat and Goursat in a new class of generalized solutions and is given an example that shows the importance of introducing the concept of such a class. Some operators with Bessel functions in the nucleus are introduced and their basic properties are studied. The important identities of these operators are helped to find an explicit representations of the stated problems.
We consider the Cauchy problem for a stochastic scalar parabolic-hyperbolic equation in any space dimension with nonlocal, nonlinear, and possibly degenerate diffusion terms. The equations are nonlocal because they involve fractional diffusion operators. We adapt the notion of stochastic entropy solution and provide a new technical framework to prove the uniqueness. The existence proof relies on the vanishing viscosity method. Moreover, using bounded variation (BV) estimates for vanishing viscosity approximations, we derive an explicit continuous dependence estimate on the nonlinearities and d…
We give sufficient conditions for the well-posedness in $\mathcal{C}^\infty$ of the Cauchy problem for third order equations with time dependent coefficients.
We consider the Dirac operator on globally hyperbolic manifolds with timelike boundary and show well-posedness of the Cauchy initial-boundary value problem coupled to MIT-boundary conditions. This is achieved by transforming the problem locally into a symmetric positive hyperbolic system, proving existence and uniqueness of weak solutions and then using local methods developed by Lax, Phillips and Rauch, Massey to show smoothness of the solutions. Our proof actually works for a slightly more general class of local boundary conditions.
We begin by introducing a new procedure for construction of the exact solutions to Cauchy problem of the real-valued (hyperbolic) Novikov-Veselov equation which is based on the Moutard symmetry. The procedure shown therein utilizes the well-known Airy function $\Ai(ξ)$ which in turn serves as a solution to the ordinary differential equation $\frac{d^2 z}{d ξ^2} = ξz$. In the second part of the article we show that the aforementioned procedure can also work for the $n$-th order generalizations of the Novikov-Veselov equation, provided that one replaces the Airy function with the appropriate sol…
We study the Cauchy problem for first-order quasi-linear systems of partial differential equations. When the spectrum of the initial principal symbol is not included in the real line, i.e., when hyperbolicity is violated at initial time, then the Cauchy problem is strongly unstable, in the sense of Hadamard. This phenomenon, which extends the linear Lax-Mizohata theorem, was explained by G. Métivier in [{\it Remarks on the well-posedness of the nonlinear Cauchy problem}, Contemp.~Math.~2005]. In the present paper, we are interested in the transition from hyperbolicity to non-hyperbolicity, tha…
An ill-posed Cauchy problem for the wave equation is considered: the solution is to be determined by the Cauchy data on some part of the time-space boundary. By means of Fourier method we obtain a regularization algorithm for this problem, which is given by rather explicit formula.
We investigate the behavior of the solutions of a class of certain strictly hyperbolic equations defined on $(0,T]\times \mathbb{R}^n$ in relation to a class of metrics on the phase space. In particular, we study the global regularity and decay issues of the solution to an equation with coefficients polynomially bound in $x$ with their $x$-derivatives and $t$-derivative of order ${O}(t^{-δ}),δ\in [0,1),$ and ${O}(t^{-1})$ respectively. This type of singular behavior allows coefficients to be either oscillatory or logarithmically bounded at $t=0$. We use the Planck function associated with the …
The global dynamics and regularity of parabolic-hyperbolic systems is an interesting topic in PDEs due to the coupling of competing dissipation and hyperbolic effects. This paper is concerned with the Cauchy problem of a parabolic-hyperbolic system derived from a chemotaxis model describing the dynamics of the initiation of tumor angiogenesis. It is shown that, as time tends to infinity, the Cauchy problem with large-amplitude discontinuous data admit global weak solutions which converge to a constant state (resp. a viscous shock wave) if the asymptotic states of initial values at far field ar…
We continue our study of initial-value problems for fully nonlinear systems exhibiting strong or weak defects of hyperbolicity. We prove that, regardless of the initial Sobolev regularity, the initial-value problem has no local $H^s$ solutions, for $s > s_0 + d/2,$ if the principal symbol has a strong, or even weak, defect of hyperbolicity, and the purely imaginary eigenvalues of the principal symbol are semi-simple and have constant multiplicity. The index $s_0 > 0$ depends on the severity of the defect of hyperbolicity. These results recover and extend previous work from G. Métivier [{\it Re…
In this paper we prove that the Cauchy problem for first-order quasi-linear systems of partial differential equations is ill-posed in Gevrey spaces, under the assumption of an initial ellipticity. The assumption bears on the principal symbol of the first-order operator. Ill-posedness means instability in the sense of Hadamard, specifically an instantaneous defect of Hölder continuity of the flow from $G^σ$ to $L^2$, where $σ\in(0,1)$ depends on the initial spectrum. Building on the analysis carried out by G. Métivier [\textit{Remarks on the well-posedness of the nonlinear Cauchy problem}, Cont…
