We investigate the behavior of the solutions of a class of certain strictly hyperbolic equations defined on $[0,T]\times \R^n$ in relation to a class of metrics on the phase space. In particular, we study the global regularity and decay issues of the solution to an equation with coefficients polynomially bound in $x$ and with their $t$-derivative of order $\textnormal{O}(t^{-q}),$ where $q \in \big[1,\frac{3}{2}\big)$. For this purpose, an appropriate generalized symbol class based on the metric is defined and the associated Planck function is used to define an infinite order operator to perform conjugation. We demonstrate that the solution not only experiences a loss of regularity (usually observed for the case of coefficients bounded in $x$) but also a decay in relation to the initial datum defined in a Sobolev space tailored to the generalized symbol class. Further, we observe that a precise behavior of the solution could be obtained by making an optimal choice of the metric in relation to the coefficients of the given equation. We also derive the cone conditions in the global setting.
It has recently been shown that for a Cauchy stress response induced by a strictly rank-one convex hyperelastic energy potential, a homogeneous Cauchy stress tensor field cannot correspond to a non-homogeneous deformation if the deformation gradient has discrete values, i.e. if the deformation is piecewise affine linear and satisfies the Hadamard jump condition. In this note, we expand upon these results and show that they do not hold for arbitrary deformations by explicitly giving an example of a strictly rank-one convex energy and a non-homogeneous deformation such that the induced Cauchy st…
We consider the strictly hyperbolic Cauchy problem \begin{align*} &D_t^m u - \sum\limits_{j = 0}^{m-1} \sum\limits_{|γ|+j = m} a_{m-j,\,γ}(t,\,x) D_x^γD_t^j u = 0, \newline &D_t^{k-1}u(0,\,x) = g_k(x),\,k = 1,\,\ldots,\,m, \end{align*} for $(t,\,x) \in [0,\,T]\times \mathbb{R}^n$ with coefficients belonging to the Zygmund class $C^s_\ast$ in $x$ and having a modulus of continuity below Lipschitz in $t$. Imposing additional conditions to control oscillations, we obtain a global (on $[0,\,T]$) $L^2$ energy estimate without loss of derivatives for $s \geq \{1+\varepsilon,\,\frac{2m_0}{2-m_0}\}$, …
We study the Cauchy problem of a $3\times 3$ system of conservation laws modeling two--phase flow of polymer flooding in rough porous media with possibly discontinuous permeability function. The system loses strict hyperbolicity in some regions of the domain where the eigenvalues of different families coincide, and BV estimates are not available in general. For a suitable $2\times 2$ system, a singular change of variable introduced by Temple could be effective to control the total variation. An extension of this technique can be applied to a $3\times 3$ system only under strict hypotheses on t…
The goal of this paper is to establish a global well-posedness for a broad class of strictly hyperbolic Cauchy problems with coefficients in $C^2((0,T];C^\infty(\mathbb{R}^n))$ growing polynomially in $x$ and singular in $t$. The problems we study are of strictly hyperbolic type with respect to a generic weight and a metric on the phase space. The singular behavior is captured by the blow-up of the first and second $t$-derivatives of the coefficients which allows the coefficients to be either logarithmic-type or oscillatory-type near $t=0$. To arrive at an energy estimate, we perform a conjuga…
We discuss inverse problems to finding the time-dependent coefficient for the multidimensional Cauchy problems for both strictly hyperbolic equations and polyharmonic heat equations. We also extend our techniques to the general inverse Cauchy problems for evolution equations.
For the first time, a globally convergent numerical method is presented for ill-posed Cauchy problems for quasilinear PDEs. The key idea is to use Carleman Weight Functions to construct globally strictly convex Tikhonov-like cost functionals.
We investigate the behavior of the solutions of a class of certain strictly hyperbolic equations defined on $(0,T]\times \mathbb{R}^n$ in relation to a class of metrics on the phase space. In particular, we study the global regularity and decay issues of the solution to an equation with coefficients polynomially bound in $x$ with their $x$-derivatives and $t$-derivative of order ${O}(t^{-δ}),δ\in [0,1),$ and ${O}(t^{-1})$ respectively. This type of singular behavior allows coefficients to be either oscillatory or logarithmically bounded at $t=0$. We use the Planck function associated with the …
In this paper we study the Cauchy problem for second order strictly hyperbolic operators when the coefficients of the principal part are not Lipschitz continuous, but only "Log-Lipschitz" with respect to all the variables. This class of equation is invariant under changes of variables and therefore suitable for a local analysis. In particular, we show local existence, local uniqueness and finite speed of propagation for the noncharacteristic Cauchy problem.
We study a class of third order hyperbolic operators $P$ in $G = Ω\cap \{0 \leq t \leq T\},\: Ω\subset \R^{n+1}$ with triple characteristics on $t = 0$. We consider the case when the fundamental matrix of the principal symbol for $t = 0$ has a couple of non vanishing real eigenvalues and $P$ is strictly hyperbolic for $t > 0.$ We prove that $P$ is strongly hyperbolic, that is the Cauchy problem for $P + Q$ is well posed in $G$ for any lower order terms $Q$.
We consider the Cauchy problem for strictly hyperbolic $m$-th order partial differential equations with coefficients low-regular in time and smooth in space. It is well-known that the problem is $L^2$ well-posed in the case of Lipschitz continuous coefficients in time, $H^s$ well-posed in the case of Log-Lipschitz continuous coefficients in time (with an, in general, finite loss of derivatives) and Gevrey well-posed in the case of Hölder continuous coefficients in time (with an, in general, infinite loss of derivatives). Here, we use moduli of continuity to describe the regularity of the coeff…
We consider the Cauchy problem for first order systems. Assuming that the set of the singular points of the characteristic variety is a smooth manifold and the characteristic values are real and semi-simple we introduce a new class which is strictly hyperbolic in the transverse direction to the characteristic manifold. We prove that if the characteristic manifold is either involutive or symplectic then these transversally strictly hyperbolic systems are strongly hyperbolic. On the other hand if the characteristic manifold is neither involutive nor symplectic transversally strictly hyperbolic s…
We show that, for first-order systems of conservation laws with a strictly convex entropy,in particular for the very simple so-called "inviscid" Burgers equation,it is possible to address the Cauchy problem by a suitable convex minimizationproblem, quite similar to some problems arising in optimal transport or variational mean-field game theory. In the general case, we show that smooth, shock-free, solutions can be recoveredon some sufficiently small interval of time. In the special situation of the Burgers equation, we furthershow that every "entropy solution" (in the sense of Kruzhkov)includi…
We give an algebraic description of wave fronts that appear in strictly hyperbolic Cauchy problem. Concrete form of definig function of wave front issued from initial algebraic variety is obtained by the aid of the Gauss-Manin systems satisfied by Gel'fand -Leray integrals.
We discuss the well-posedness of the Cauchy problem for hyperbolic operators with double characteristics which changes from non-effectively hyperbolic to effectively hyperbolic, on the double characteristic manifold, across a submanifold of codimension 1. We assume that there is no bicharacteristic tangent to the double characteristic manifold and the spatial dimension is 2. Then we prove the well-posedness of the Cauchy problem in all Gevrey classes assuming, on the double characteristic manifold, that the ratio of the imaginary part of the subprincipal symbol to the real eigenvalue of the Ha…
This paper is devoted to strictly hyperbolic systems and equations with non-smooth coefficients. Below a certain level of smoothness, distributional solutions may fail to exist. We construct generalised solutions in the Colombeau algebra of generalised functions. Extending earlier results on symmetric hyperbolic systems, we introduce generalised strict hyperbolicity, construct symmetrisers, prove an appropriate Gårding inequality and establish existence, uniqueness and regularity of generalised solutions. Under additional regularity assumptions on the coefficients, when a classical solution of…
The goal of this paper is to study global well-posedness, cone of dependence and loss of regularity of the solutions to a class of strictly hyperbolic equations with coefficients displaying "mild" blow-up of sublogarithmic order - $|\ln t|^γ,γ\in(0,1).$ The problems we study are of strictly hyperbolic type with respect to a generic weight and a metric on the phase space. The coefficients are polynomially bound in $x$ with their $x$-derivatives and $t$-derivative of order $O(t^{-δ}),δ\in [0,1),$ and $O(t^{-1}|\ln t|^{γ-1}), γ\in(0,1),$ respectively. We employ the Planck function associated with…
We give a factorization procedure for a strictly hyperbolic partial differential operator of second order with logarithmic slow scale coefficients. From this we can microlocally diagonalize the full wave operator which results in a coupled system of two first-order pseudodifferential equations in a microlocal sense. Under the assumption that the full wave equation is microlocal regular in a fixed domain of the phase space, we can approximate the problem by two one-way wave equations where a dissipative term is added to suppress singularities outside the given domain. We obtain well-posedness o…
We obtain sufficient conditions for the uniqueness of solutions to the Cauchy problem for the continuity equation in classes of measures that need not be absolutely continuous.
We consider the asymptotic behavior of nonlinear nonlocal flows $u_t+(-\La)^{1/2}u=0$ to find the geometric property of the solutions in nonlinear eigenvalue problem: (-\La)^{1/2}\vp=λ\vp posed in a strictly convex domain $Ω\subset\R^n$ with $\vp>0$ in $Ω$ and $\vp=0$ on $\R^n\bsΩ$. This is corresponding to an eigenvalue problem for Cauchy process. The concavity of $\vp$ is well known for the dimension $n=1$. In this paper, we will show $\vp^{-\frac{2}{n+1}}$ is convex. Moreover, the eventual power-convexity of the parabolic flows is also proved. In the final section, We extend geometric resul…
We consider the Cauchy problem and the source problem for normally hyperbolic operators on the Minkowski spacetime, and study the determination of solutions from their integrals along null geodesics. For the Cauchy problem, we give a new proof of the stable determination result obtained in Vasy and Wang [12]. For the source problem, we obtain stable determination for sources with space-like singularities. Our proof is based on the microlocal analysis of the normal operator of the light ray transform composed with the parametrix for strictly hyperbolic operators.
We study the Cauchy problem of the mass critical nonlinear Schrodinger equation with derivative with the 4pi mass. One has the global well-posedness in H^1 whenever "the mass is strictly less than 4pi" or whenever "the mass is equal to 4pi and the momentum is strictly less than zero". In this paper, by the concentration compact principle as originally done by Kenig-Merle, we obtain the limiting profile of blow up solutions with the critical 4pi mass.
We consider the strategy of realizing the solution of a Cauchy problem with radial data as a limit of radial solutions to initial-boundary value problems posed on the exterior of vanishing balls centered at the origin. The goal is to gauge the effectiveness of this approach in a simple, concrete setting: the 3-dimensional, linear wave equation $\square_{1+3}U=0$ with radial Cauchy data $U(0,x)=Φ(x)=ϕ(|x|)$, $U_t(0,x)=Ψ(x)=ψ(|x|)$. We are primarily interested in this as a model situation for other, possibly nonlinear, equations where neither formulae nor abstract existence results are available…
Ultrasound modulation of electrical or optical properties of materials offers the possibility to devise hybrid imaging techniques that combine the high electrical or optical contrast observed in many settings of interest with the high resolution of ultrasound. Mathematically, these modalities require that we reconstruct a diffusion coefficient $σ(x)$ for $x\in X$, a bounded domain in $\Rm^n$, from knowledge of $σ(x)|\nabla u|^2(x)$ for $x\in X$, where $u$ is the solution to the elliptic equation $-\nabla\cdotσ\nabla u=0$ in $X$ with $u=f$ on $\partial X$. This inverse problem may be recast as …
In a series of publications of the second author, including some with coauthors, globally strictly convex Tikhonov-like functionals were constructed for some nonlinear ill-posed problems. The main element of such a functional is the presence of the Carleman Weight Function. Compared with previous publications, the main novelty of this paper is that the existence of the regularized solution (i.e. the minimizer) is proved rather than assumed. The method works for both ill-posed Cauchy problems for some quasilinear PDEs of the second order and for some Coefficient Inverse Problems. However, to si…
The aim of this paper is to study the global existence of solutions to a coupled wave-Klein-Gordon system in space dimension two when initial data are small, smooth and mildly decaying at infinity. Some physical models strictly related to general relativity have shown the importance of studying such systems, but very few results are know at present in low space dimension. We study here a model two-dimensional system, in which the non-linearity writes in terms of 'null forms', and show the global existence of small solutions. Our goal is to prove some energy estimates on the solution when a cer…
This paper is dedicated to the study of the derivative nonlinear Schrödinger equation on the real line. The local well-posedness of this equation in the Sobolev spaces is well understood since a couple of decades, while the global well-posedness is not completely settled. For the latter issue, the best known results up-to-date concern either Cauchy data in $H^{\frac12}$ with mass strictly less than $4π$ or general initial conditions in the weighted Sobolev space $H^{2, 2}$. In this article, we prove that the derivative nonlinear Schrödinger equation is globally well-posed for general Cauchy da…
Given a Hilbert space, we investigate the well-posedness of the Cauchy problem for the wave equation for operators with discrete non-negative spectrum acting on it. We consider the cases when the time-dependent propagation speed is regular, Hölder, and distributional. We also consider cases when it it is strictly positive (strictly hyperbolic case) and when it is non-negative (weakly hyperbolic case). When the propagation speed is a distribution, we introduce the notion of "very weak solutions" to the Cauchy problem. We show that the Cauchy problem for the wave equation with the distributional…
We study a nonlinear porous medium type equation involving the infinity Laplacian operator. We first consider the problem posed on a bounded domain and prove existence of maximal nonnegative viscosity solutions. Uniqueness is obtained for strictly positive solutions with Lipschitz in time data. We also describe the asymptotic behaviour for the Dirichlet problem in the class of maximal solutions. We then discuss the Cauchy problem posed in the whole space. As in the standard porous medium equation (PME), solutions which start with compact support exhibit a free boundary propagating with finite …
We consider the Cauchy problem for the isentropic compressible Euler equations in a three-dimensional periodic domain under general pressure laws. For any smooth initial density away from the vacuum, we construct infinitely many entropy solutions with no presence of shock. In particular, the constructed density is smooth and the momentum is $α$-Hölder continuous for $α<1/7$. Also, we provide a continuous entropy solution satisfying the entropy inequality strictly.
The notion of Kruzhkov entropy solution was extended by the first author in 2007 to conservation laws with a fractional laplacian diffusion term; this notion led to well-posedness for the Cauchy problem in the $L^\infty$-framework. In the present paper, we further motivate the introduction of entropy solutions, showing that in the case of fractional diffusion of order strictly less than one, uniqueness of a weak solution may fail.
In this paper we will study the Cauchy problem for strictly hyperbolic operators with low regularity coefficients in any space dimension $N\geq1$. We will suppose the coefficients to be log-Zygmund continuous in time and log-Lipschitz continuous in space. Paradifferential calculus with parameters will be the main tool to get energy estimates in Sobolev spaces and these estimates will present a time-dependent loss of derivatives.
We consider the Cauchy problem for the KdV hierarchy -- a family of integrable PDEs with a Lax pair representation involving one-dimensional Schrödinger operators -- under a local in time boundedness assumption on the solution. For reflectionless initial data, we prove that the solution stays reflectionless. For almost periodic initial data with absolutely continuous spectrum, we prove that under Craig-type conditions on the spectrum, Dirichlet data evolve according to a Lipschitz Dubrovin-type flow, so the solution is uniquely recovered by a trace formula. This applies to algebro-geometric (f…
We construct a Lipschitz metric for conservative solutions of the Cauchy problem on the line for the two-component Camassa--Holm system $u_t-u_{txx}+3uu_x-2u_xu_{xx}-uu_{xxx}+ρρ_x=0$, and $ρ_t+(uρ)_x=0$ with given initial data $(u_0, ρ_0)$. The Lipschitz metric $d_{\D^M}$ has the property that for two solutions $z(t)=(u(t),ρ(t),μ_t)$ and $\tilde z(t)=(\tilde u(t),\tilde ρ(t),\tilde μ_t)$ of the system we have $d_{\D^M}(z(t),\tilde z(t))\le C_{M,T} d_{\D^M}(z_0,\tilde z_0)$ for $t\in[0,T]$. Here the measure $μ_t$ is such that its absolutely continuous part equals the energy $(u^2+u_x^2+ρ^2)(t)d…
We consider the Cauchy problems of a non-strictly hyperbolic system which describes the compressible Euler fluid with exothermic reaction. In this paper a Lyapunov-type functional is constructed for balance laws. By analysis of the flow generated by front tracking method, we prove the well-posedness theorems and present the local features of global solutions.
We consider a multi-dimensional scalar wave equation with memory corresponding to the viscoelastic material described by a generalized Zener model. We deduce that this relaxation system is an example of a non-strictly hyperbolic system satisfying Majda's block structure condition. Well-posedness of the associated Cauchy problem is established by showing that the symbol of the spatial derivatives is uniformly diagonalizable with real eigenvalues. A long-time stability result is obtained by plane-wave analysis when the memory term allows for dissipation of energy.
The Cauchy problem is considered for the perturbed strictly hyperbolic 2x2 system of quasilinear equations. The unperturbed problem has a persistent solution with two discontinuity lines (shock waves). Both an asymptotics of shock waves position in the plane (x,t) and an asymptotics of the perturbed problem solution are discussed.
We consider the probabilistic Cauchy problem for the Benjamin-Bona-Mahony equation (BBM) on the one-dimensional torus $\mathbb{T}$ with initial data below $L^{2}(\mathbb{T})$. With respect to random initial data of strictly negative Sobolev regularity, we prove that BBM is almost surely globally well-posed. The argument employs the $I$-method to obtain an a priori bound on the growth of the `residual' part of the solution. We then discuss the stability properties of the solution map in the deterministically ill-posed regime.
In this paper we consider linear, time dependent Schrödinger equations of the form ${\rm i} \partial_t ψ= K_0 ψ+ V(t) ψ$, where $K_0$ is a strictly positive selfadjoint operator with discrete spectrum and constant spectral gaps, and $V(t)$ a time periodic potential. We give sufficient conditions on $V(t)$ ensuring that $K_0+V (t)$ generates unbounded orbits. The main condition is that the resonant average of $V(t)$, namely the average with respect to the flow of $K_0$, has a nonempty absolutely continuous spectrum and fulfills a Mourre estimate. These conditions are stable under perturbations.…
Recently, M.K.-H. Kiessling and A.S. Tahvildar-Zadeh proved that a unique global classical solution to the relativistic Vlasov-Poisson system exists whenever the positive, integrable initial datum is spherically symmetric, compactly supported in momentum space, vanishes on characteristics with vanishing angular momentum, and for $β\ge 3/2$ has $\mathfrak{L}^β$-norm strictly below a positive, critical value $\mathcal{C}_β$. Everything else being equal, data leading to finite time blow-up can be found with $\mathfrak{L}^β$-norm surpassing $\mathcal{C}_β$ for any $β>1$, with $\mathcal{C}_β>0$ if …
We study the Cauchy problem for the KdV equation $\partial_t u - 6 u \partial_x u + \partial_x^3 u = 0$ with almost periodic initial data $u(x,0)=V(x)$. We consider initial data $V$, for which the associated Schrödinger operator is absolutely continuous and has a spectrum that is not too thin in a sense we specify, and show the existence, uniqueness, and almost periodicity in time of solutions. This establishes a conjecture of Percy Deift for this class of initial data. The result is shown to apply to all small analytic quasiperiodic initial data with Diophantine frequency vector.
In this paper we prove an energy estimate with no loss of derivatives for a strictly hyperbolic operator with Zygmund continuous second order coefficients both in time and in space. In particular, this estimate implies the well-posedness for the related Cauchy problem. On the one hand, this result is quite surprising, because it allows to consider coefficients which are not Lipschitz continuous in time. On the other hand, it holds true only in the very special case of initial data in $H^{1/2}\times H^{-1/2}$. Paradifferential calculus with parameters is the main ingredient to the proof.
In this paper we discuss the dissipative property of near-equilibrium classical solutions to the Cauchy problem of the Vlasov-Maxwell-Boltzmann System in the whole space $\R^3$ when the positive charged ion flow provides a spatially uniform background. The most key point of studying this coupled degenerately dissipative system here is to establish the dissipation of the electromagnetic field which turns out to be of the regularity-loss type. Precisely, for the linearized non-homogeneous system, some $L^2$ energy functionals and $L^2$ time-frequency functionals which are equivalent with the nat…
We prove that the Cauchy problem of the mass-critical generalized KdV equation is globally well-posed in Sobolev spaces $H^s(\R)$ for $s>6/13$. Of course, we require that the mass is strictly less than that of the ground state in the focusing case. The main approach is the "I-method" together with the multilinear correction analysis. Moreover, we use some "partially refined" argument to lower the upper control of the multiplier in the resonant interactions. The result improves the previous works of Fonseca, Linares, Ponce (2003) and Farah (2009).
