For a class of weakly hyperbolic systems of the form D_t - A(t,x,D_x), where A(t,x,D_x) is a first-order pseudodifferential operator whose principal symbol degenerates like t^{l_*} at time t=0, for some integer l_* \geq 1, well-posedness of the Cauchy problem is proved in an adapted scale of Sobolev spaces. In addition, an upper bound for the loss of regularity that occurs when passing from the Cauchy data to the solutions is established. In examples, this upper bound turns out to be sharp.
We consider a class of weakly hyperbolic systems of first-order, nonlinear PDEs. Weak hyperbolicity means here that the principal symbol of the system has a crossing of eigenvalues, and is not uniformly diagonalizable. We prove the well-posedness of the Cauchy problem in the Gevrey regularity for all Gevrey indices greater than $1/2$. The proof is based on the construction of a suitable approximate symmetrizer of the principal symbol and an energy estimate in Gevrey spaces. We discuss both the generality of the assumption on the structure of the principal symbol and the sharpness of the lower …
We study hyperbolic first order systems and propose a new method proving Gevrey well posedness, constructing a symmetrizer, motivated by a special Lyapunov function for linear ODE. The proof not only gives a priori estimates straightforward so simply but also clarifies some effects coming from the spectral structures other than the multiplicities of the eigenvalues.
In this paper we analyse the Gevrey well-posedness of the Cauchy problem for weakly hyperbolic equations of general form with time-dependent coefficients. The results involve the order of lower order terms and the number of multiple roots. We also derive the corresponding well-posedness results in the space of Gevrey Beurling ultradistributions.
This paper studies the Cauchy problem for variable coefficient weakly hyperbolic first order systems of partial differential operators. The hyperbolicity assumption is that for each $t, x$ the principal symbol is hyperbolic. No hypothesis is imposed on lower order terms. For coefficients and Cauchy data sufficiently Gevrey regular the Cauchy problem has a unique sufficiently Gevrey regular solution. We prove stability and error estimates for the spectral Crank-Nicholson scheme. Approximate solutions can be computed with accuracy $epsilon$ in the supremum norm with cost growing at most polynomi…
A new way to prove the one-dimensional Cauchy problem's weakly discontinuous solutions for hyperbolic PDEs are on the characteristics is discussed in this paper. To do so, I use wavelet singularity detection methods or WTMM [1] based on two-dimensional wavelet transform and combine it with the Lipschits index to strengthen the detection.

For a homogeneous polynomial $p$ in $ξ\in {\bf R}^n$ with Gevrey coefficients, it is known that the Cauchy problem for any realization of $p$ is well-posed in the Gevrey class of order $s<2$ if the characteristic roots are real. In this note, we give examples showing the situation of the converse direction, in particular the optimality of the Gevrey order $s=2$.
Hyperbolic-parabolic systems have spatially homogenous stationary states. When the dissipation is weak, one can derive weakly nonlinear-dissipative approximations that govern perturbations of these constant states. These approximations are quadratically nonlinear. When the original system has an entropy, the approximation is formally dissipative in a natural Hilbert space. We show that when the approximation is strictly dissipative it has global weak solutions for all initial data in that Hilbert space. We also prove a weak-strong uniqueness theorem for it. In addition, we give a Kawashima typ…
In this paper we consider weakly hyperbolic equations of higher orders in arbitrary dimensions with time-dependent coefficients and lower order terms. We prove the Gevrey well-posedness of the Cauchy problem under $C^k$-regularity of coefficients of the principal part and natural Levi conditions on lower order terms which may be only continuous. In the case of analytic coefficients in the principal part we establish the $C^\infty$ well-posedness. The proofs are based on using the quasi-symmetriser for the corresponding system. The main novelty compared to the existing literature is the possibi…
In this paper, we characterized resonant interaction of weakly nonlinear hyperbolic waves in gas dynamics with a real gas background. An asymptotic approach is used to study the interaction between waves, governed by the Euler equations of gas dynamics, supplemented by a van der Waal equation of state; the evolution equation is an integro-differential equation composed of a Burgers type nonlinear term and a convolution term with a known kernel. A one parameter family of traveling wave solutions for various values of van der Waals parameter is studied analytically and numerically. Effect of the…
In this paper we show how to include low order terms in the $C^{\infty}$ well-posedness results for weakly hyperbolic equations with analytic time-dependent coefficients. This is achieved by doing a different reduction to a system from the previously used one. We find the Levi conditions such that the $C^{\infty}$ well-posedness continues to hold.
We study a class of hyperbolic Cauchy problems, associated with linear operators and systems with polynomially bounded coefficients, variable multiplicities and involutive characteristics, globally defined on R^n. We prove well-posedness in Sobolev-Kato spaces, with loss of smoothness and decay at infinity. We also obtain results about propagation of singularities, in terms of wave-front sets describing the evolution of both smoothness and decay singularities of temperate distributions. Moreover, we can prove the existence of random-field solutions for the associated stochastic Cauchy problems…
We consider the Cauchy problem for weakly hyperbolic $m$-th order partial differential equations with coefficients low-regular in time and smooth in space. It is well-known that in general one has to impose Levi conditions to get $C^\infty$ or Gevrey well-posedness even if the coefficients are smooth. We use moduli of continuity to describe the regularity of the coefficients with respect to time, weight sequences for the characterization of their regularity with respect to space and weight functions to define the solution spaces. Furthermore, we propose a generalized Levi condition that models…
We investigate in this paper the existence of the leading profile of a WKB expansion for quasilinear initial boundary value problems with a highly oscillating forcing boundary term. The framework is weakly nonlinear, as the boundary term is of order O($ε$) where the frequencies are of order O(1/$ε$). We consider here multiple phases on the boundary, generating a countable infinite number of phases inside the domain, and we therefore use an almost periodic functional framework. The major difficulties of this work are the lack of symmetry in the leading profile equation and the occurrence of inf…
We use the Littlewood-Paley decomposition technique to obtain a $C^\infty$-well-posedness result for a weakly hyperbolic equation with a finite order of degeneration
In this paper we pursue the work initiated in \cite{Bahuaud, BahuaudGicquaud}: study the extent to which conformally compact asymptotically hyperbolic metrics can be characterized intrinsically. We show how the decay rate of the sectional curvature to -1 controls the Hölder regularity of the compactified metric. To this end, we construct harmonic coordinates that satisfy some Neumann-type condition at infinity. Combined with a new integration argument, this permits us to recover to a large extent our previous result without any decay assumption on the covariant derivatives of the Riemann tenso…
An averaging method for getting uniformly valid asymptotic approximations of the solution of hyperbolic systems of equations is presented. The averaged system of equations disintegrates into independent equations for non-resonance systems. We consider the resonance conditions for some classes of solutions. The averaged system can be solved numerically in the resonance case. The shallow water problem is considered as an example of the resonance system. Results of numerical experiments are presented.
We present a new approach to analyze the validation of weakly nonlinear geometric optics for entropy solutions of nonlinear hyperbolic systems of conservation laws whose eigenvalues are allowed to have constant multiplicity and corresponding characteristic fields to be linearly degenerate. The approach is based on our careful construction of more accurate auxiliary approximation to weakly nonlinear geometric optics, the properties of wave front-tracking approximate solutions, the behavior of solutions to the approximate asymptotic equations, and the standard semigroup estimates. To illustrate …
The aim of this paper is to show how a weakly dispersive perturbation of the inviscid Burgers equation improve (enlarge) the space of resolution of the local Cauchy problem. More generally we will review several problems arising from weak dispersive perturbations of nonlinear hyperbolic equations or systems.
We consider the Hele-Shaw flow that arises from injection of two-dimensional fluid into a point of a curved surface. The resulting fluid domains have and are more or less determined implicitly by a mean value property for harmonic functions. We improve on the results of Hedenmalm and Shimorin \cite{HS} and obtain essentially the same conclusions while imposing a weaker curvature condition on the surface. Incidentally, the curvature condition is the same as the one that appears in a recent paper of Hedenmalm and Perdomo, where the problem of finding smooth area minimizing surfaces for a given c…
The propagation of analyticity for a solution u(t,x) to a nonlinear weakly hyperbolic equation of order m, means that if u, and its time derivatives up to the order m-1, are analytic in the space variables x at the initial time, then they remain analytic for any time. Here we prove that such a property holds for the solutions bounded in C-infinity of a special class of homogeneous equations in one space variable, with time dependent coefficient.
Using recent work of Bourgain-Dyatlov we show that for any convex co-compact hyperbolic surface Strichartz estimates for the Schrödinger equation hold with an arbitrarily small loss of regularity.
In this paper we study first order hyperbolic systems with multiple characteristics (weakly hyperbolic) and time-dependent analytic coefficients. The main question is when the Cauchy problem for such systems is well-posed in $C^{\infty}$ and in $\mathcal{D}'$. We prove that the analyticity of the coefficients combined with suitable hypotheses on the eigenvalues guarantee the $C^\infty$ well-posedness of the corresponding Cauchy problem. This result is an extension to systems of the analogous results for scalar equations recently obtained by Jannelli and Taglialatela in \cite{JT} and by the aut…
In this note we provide dispersive estimates for Fourier integrals with parameter-dependent phase functions in terms of geometric quantities of associated families of Fresnel surfaces. The results are based on a multi-dimensional van der Corput lemma due to the first author. Applications to dispersive estimates for hyperbolic systems and scalar higher order hyperbolic equations are also discussed.
This paper is devoted to a simpler derivation of energy estimates compared to previously existing ones, for effectively hyperbolic operators. One of main points is no use of general Fourier integral operators and another point is an efficient use of Weyl calculus of pseudodifferential operators associated with several different metrics.
In this paper we construct a parametrix for the high-energy asymptotics of the analytic continuation of the resolvent on a Riemannian manifold which is a small perturbation of the Poincaré metric on hyperbolic space. As a result, we obtain non-trapping high energy estimates for this analytic continuation.
Applying the spectral measure estimates obtained in the author's joint work with A. Hassell, we establish global-in-time Strichartz estimates without loss via truncated / microlocalized dispersive estimates as well as energy estimates.
We introduce the concept of energy-variational solutions for hyperbolic conservation laws. Intrinsically, these energy-variational solutions fulfill the weak-strong uniqueness principle and the semi-flow property, and the set of solutions is convex and weakly-star closed. The existence of energy-variational solutions is proven via a suitable time-discretization scheme under certain assumptions. This general result yields existence of energy-variational solutions to the magnetohydrodynamical equations for ideal incompressible fluids and to the Euler equations in both the incompressible and the …
We provide reversed Strichartz estimates for the shifted wave equations on non-trapping asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds using cluster estimates for spectral projectors proved previously in such generality. As a consequence, we solve a problem left open in \cite{SSWZ} about the endpoint case for global well-posedness of nonlinear wave equations. We also provide estimates in this context for the maximal wave operator.
We establish a mixed-norm Strichartz type estimate for the wave equation on Riemannian manifolds $(Ω,g)$, for the case that $Ω$ is the exterior of a smooth, normally hyperbolic trapped obstacle in $n$ dimensional Euclidean space, and $n$ is a positive odd integer. As for the normally hyperbolic trapped obstacles, we will some loss of derivatives for data in the local energy decay estimate. Hence the global Strichartz estimate has a derivative loss. However, we can show that the forcing term is bounded by the sum of no more than two Lebesgue $(p,q)$ mixed norms.
This paper is devoted to the study of time-dependent hyperbolic systems and the derivation of dispersive estimates for their solutions. It is based on a diagonalisation of the full symbol within adapted symbol classes in order to extract the essential information about representations of solutions. This is combined with a multi-dimensional van der Corput lemma to derive dispersive estimates.
Doi proved that the $L^2_t H^{1/2}_x$ local smoothing effect for Schrödinger equation on a Riemannian manifold does not hold if the geodesic flow has one trapped trajectory. We show in contrast that Strichartz estimates and $L^1\to L^\infty$ dispersive estimates still hold without loss for $e^{itΔ}$ in various situations where the trapped set is hyperbolic and of sufficiently small fractal dimension.
In this paper we prove stability estimates of logarithmic type for an inverse problem consisting in the determination of unknown portions of the boundary of a domain in $\mathbb{R}^n$, from a knowledge, in a finite time observation, of overdetermined boundary data for initial boundary value problem for anisotropic wave equation.
In this paper, we prove that Kato smoothing effects for magnetic Schrödinger operators can yield the endpoint Strichartz estimates for linear wave equation with magnetic potential on two dimensional hyperbolic spaces. This result serves as a cornerstone for the author's work \cite{Lize} and collaborative work \cite{LMZ} in the study of asymptotic stability of harmonic maps for wave maps from $\Bbb R\times\Bbb H^2$ to $\Bbb H^2$.
In this paper we establish optimal local and global Besov-Lipschitz and Triebel-Lizorkin estimates for the solutions to linear hyperbolic partial differential equations. These estimates are based on local and global estimates for Fourier integral operators that span all possible scales (and in particular both Banach and quasi-Banach scales) of Besov-Lipschitz spaces $B^s_{p,q}(\R^n)$, and certain Banach and quasi-Banach scales of Triebel-Lizorkin spaces $F^s_{p,q}(\R^n)$
In this paper, we establish a curvature estimate for semi-convex solutions of Hessian equations in hyperbolic space. We also obtain a curvature estimate for admissible solutions to prescribed curvature measure type problem in hyperbolic space. A crucial ingredient in both estimates is a concavity inequality for Hessian operator.
We prove local in time Strichartz estimates without loss for the restriction of the solution of the Schroedinger equation, outside a large compact set, on a class of asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds.
We study the normal operator to the geodesic X-ray transform on functions in the setting of simple asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds. We construct a parametrix for the normal operator in the 0-pseudodifferential calculus and use it show a stability estimate.
We prove high energy estimates for the boundary values of the weighted resolvent of the Laplacian on an asymptotically hyperbolic manifold. Our point is to use weights that fit the pseudo-differential calculus associated with the asymptotically hyperbolic geometry. Our proof is a combination of a trick using Mourre theory and of results by Froese-Hislop and Cardoso-Vodev.
In this paper, we study the logarithmic stability for the hyperbolic equations by arbitrary boundary observation. Based on Carleman estimate, we first prove an estimate of the resolvent operator of such equation. Then we prove the logarithmic stability estimate for the hyperbolic equations without any assumption on an observation subboundary.
Dispersive and Strichartz estimates for solutions to general strictly hyperbolic partial differential equations with constant coefficients are considered. The global time decay estimates of $L^p-L^q$ norms of propagators are obtained, and it is shown how the time decay rates depend on the geometry of the problem. The frequency space is separated in several zones each giving a certain decay rate. Geometric conditions on characteristics responsible for the particular decay are identified and investigated. Thus, a comprehensive analysis is carried out for strictly hyperbolic equations of high ord…
In this article we show the existence of a random-field solution to linear stochastic partial differential equations whose partial differential operator is hyperbolic and has variable coefficients that may depend on the temporal and spatial argument. The main tools for this, pseudo-differential and Fourier integral operators, come from microlocal analysis. The equations that we treat are second-order and higher-order strictly hyperbolic, and second-order weakly hyperbolic with uniformly bounded coefficients in space. For the latter one we show that a stronger assumption on the correlation meas…
We prove gradient estimates for hypersurfaces in the hyperbolic space $\mathbb{H}^{n+1},$ expanding by negative powers of a certain class of homogeneous curvature functions. We obtain optimal gradient estimates for hypersurfaces evolving by certain powers $p>1$ of $F^{-1}$ and smooth convergence of the properly rescaled hypersurfaces. In particular, the full convergence result holds for the inverse Gauss curvature flow of surfaces without any further pinching condition besides convexity of the initial hypersurface.
We extend Vasy's results on semiclassical high energy estimates for the meromorphic continuation of the resolvent for asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds to metrics that are not necessarily even. Vasy's method gives the meromorphic continuation of the resolvent and high energy estimates in strips, assuming that the geodesic flow is non-trapping, without having to construct a parametrix. We prove that the size of the strip to which the resolvent can be extended meromorphically is the same obtained by Guillarmou.
