Doi proved that the $L^2_t H^{1/2}_x$ local smoothing effect for Schrödinger equation on a Riemannian manifold does not hold if the geodesic flow has one trapped trajectory. We show in contrast that Strichartz estimates and $L^1\to L^\infty$ dispersive estimates still hold without loss for $e^{itΔ}$ in various situations where the trapped set is hyperbolic and of sufficiently small fractal dimension.
We establish a mixed-norm Strichartz type estimate for the wave equation on Riemannian manifolds $(Ω,g)$, for the case that $Ω$ is the exterior of a smooth, normally hyperbolic trapped obstacle in $n$ dimensional Euclidean space, and $n$ is a positive odd integer. As for the normally hyperbolic trapped obstacles, we will some loss of derivatives for data in the local energy decay estimate. Hence the global Strichartz estimate has a derivative loss. However, we can show that the forcing term is bounded by the sum of no more than two Lebesgue $(p,q)$ mixed norms.
We consider an $n$-dimensional spherically symmetric, asymptotically Euclidean manifold with two ends and a codimension 1 trapped set which is degenerately hyperbolic. By separating variables and constructing a semiclassical parametrix for a time scale polynomially beyond Ehrenfest time, we show that solutions to the linear Schrödiner equation with initial conditions localized on a spherical harmonic satisfy Strichartz estimates with a loss depending only on the dimension $n$ and independent of the degeneracy. The Strichartz estimates are sharp up to an arbitrary $β>0$ loss. This is in contras…
We prove global Strichartz inequalities for the Schrödinger equation on a large class of asymptotically conical manifolds. Letting $ P $ be the nonnegative Laplace operator and $ f_0 \in C_0^{\infty}({\mathbb R}) $ be a smooth cutoff equal to $1$ near zero, we show first that the low frequency part of any solution $ e^{-itP} u_0 $, i.e. $ f_0 (P) e^{-itP} u_0 $, enjoys the same global Strichartz estimates as on $ {\mathbb R}^n $ in dimension $ n \geq 3 $. We also show that the high energy part $ (1-f_0)(P) e^{-itP} u_0$ also satisfies global Strichartz estimates without loss of derivatives out…
We prove global Strichartz estimates without loss outside two strictly convex obstacles, combining arguments from M.Ikawa (1982,1988) with more recent ones inspired by N.Burq, C.Guillarmou, and A. Hassell (2010) and O. Ivanovici (2010). This is to be contrasted with the loss in the smoothing estimate for the Schrödinger equation with Dirichlet boundary conditions in the presence of a trapped geodesic.
In this paper we prove local-in-time Strichartz estimates with loss of derivatives for Schrödinger equations with variable coefficients and potentials, under the conditions that the geodesic flow is nontrapping and potentials grow polynomially at infinity. This is a generalization to the case with variable coefficients and improvement of the result by Yajima-Zhang. The proof is based on microlocal techniques including the semiclassical parametrix for a time scale depending on a spatial localization and the Littlewood-Paley type decomposition with respect to both of space and frequency.
We study the global-in-time Strichartz estimates for the Schrödinger equation on a class of scattering manifolds $X^{\circ}$. Let $\mathcal{L}_V=Δ_g+V$ where $Δ_g$ is the Beltrami-Laplace operator on the scattering manifold and $V$ is a real potential function on this setting. We first extend the global-in-time Strichartz estimate in Hassell-Zhang \cite{HZ} on the requirement of $V(z)=O(\langle z\rangle^{-3})$ to $O(\langle z\rangle^{-2})$ and secondly generalize the result to the scattering manifold with a mild trapped set as well as Bouclet-Mizutani\cite{BM} but with a potential. We also obt…
We prove sharp Strichartz estimates for the semi-classical Schrodinger equation on a compact manifold with smooth, strictly geodesically concave boundary. We deduce sharp (classical) Strichartz estimates for the Schrodinger equation outside a strictly convex obstacle, local existence for the H^1-critical (quintic) Schrodinger equation and scattering for the sub-critical Schrodinger equation in 3D.
For a large class of complete, non-compact Riemannian manifolds, $(M,g)$, with boundary, we prove high energy resolvent estimates in the case where there is one trapped hyperbolic geodesic. As an application, we have the following local smoothing estimate for the Schrödinger propagator: \int_0^T || ρ_s e^{it(Δ_g-V)} u_0 ||_{H^{1/2 - ε}(M)}^2 dt \leq C_T || u_0 ||_{L^2(M)}^2, where $ρ_s(x) \in \Ci(M)$ satisfies $ρ_s = <\dist_g(x,x_0)>^{-s}$, $s> \half$, and $V \in \Ci(M)$, $0 \leq V \leq C$ satisfies $|\nabla V| \leq C <\dist(x,x_0)>^{-1-δ}$ for some $δ>0$. From the local smoothing estimate, we…
We present a new, fully anisotropic, criterion for formation of trapped surfaces in vacuum. More precisely we provide conditions on null data, concentrated in a neighborhood of a short null geodesic segment (possibly flat everywhere else) whose future development contains a trapped surface. This extends considerably the previous result of Christodoulou \cite{Chr:book} which required instead a uniform condition along all null geodesic generators. To obtain our result we combine Christodoulou's mechanism for the formation of a trapped surface with a new deformation process which takes place alon…
For a Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ with strictly convex boundary $\partial M$, the lens data consists in the set of lengths of geodesics $γ$ with endpoints on $\partial M$, together with their endpoints $(x_-,x_+)\in \partial M\times \partial M$ and tangent exit vectors $(v_-,v_+)\in T_{x_-} M\times T_{x_+} M$. We show deformation lens rigidity for a large class of manifolds which includes all manifolds with negative curvature and strictly convex boundary, possibly with non-trivial topology and trapped geodesics. For the same class of manifolds in dimension $2$, we prove that the set of endpoin…
In this survey, we review some applications and extensions of the author's results with Richard Melrose on propagation of singularities for solutions to the wave equation on manifolds with conical singularities. These results mainly concern: the local decay of energy on noncompact manifolds with diffractive trapped orbits (joint work with Dean Baskin); singularities of the wave trace created by diffractive closed geodesics (joint work with G. Austin Ford); and the distribution of scattering resonances associated to such closed geodesics (joint work with Luc Hillairet).
We consider solutions to the linear wave equation on non-compact Riemannian manifolds without boundary when the geodesic flow admits a filamentary hyperbolic trapped set. We obtain a polynomial rate of local energy decay with exponent depending only on the dimension.
We prove a local smoothing result for the Schrödinger equation on a class of surfaces of revolution which have infinitely many trapped geodesics. Our main result is a local smoothing estimate with loss (compared to \cite{ChMe-lsm}) depending on the accumulation rate of the critical points of the profile curve. The proof uses an h-dependent version of semiclassical propagation of singularities, and a result on gluing an h-dependent number of cutoff resolvent estimates.
We obtain a formula for the Schwartz kernel of the scattering operator in terms of the Schwartz kernel of the fundamental solution of the wave operator on asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds. If there are no trapped geodesics, this formula is used to show that the scattering operator is a Fourier integral operator that quantizes the scattering relation.
We consider integral geometry inverse problems for unitary connections and skew-Hermitian Higgs fields on manifolds with negative sectional curvature. The results apply to manifolds in any dimension, with or without boundary, and also in the presence of trapped geodesics. In the boundary case, we show injectivity of the attenuated ray transform on tensor fields with values in a Hermitian bundle (i.e. vector valued case). We also show that a connection and Higgs field on a Hermitian bundle are determined up to gauge by the knowledge of the parallel transport between boundary points along all po…
We consider the nonlinear problem of determining a connection and a Higgs field from the corresponding parallel transport along geodesics on a Riemannian manifold with boundary, in any dimension. The problem can be reduced to an integral geometry question of some attenuated geodesic ray transform through a pseudolinearization argument. We show injectivity (up to natural obstructions) and stability estimates for both the linear and nonlinear problems for generic simple metrics and generic connections and Higgs fields, including the real-analytic ones. We consider the problems on simple manifold…
For a class of Riemannian manifolds with boundary that includes all negatively curved manifolds with strictly convex boundary, we establish Hölder type stability estimates in the geometric inverse problem of determining the electric potential or the conformal factor from the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map associated with the Schrödinger equation and the wave equation. The novelty in this result lies in the fact that we allow some geodesics to be trapped inside the manifold and have infinite length.
We show that degenerate horizons exhibit a new trapping effect. Specifically, we obtain a non-degenerate Morawetz estimate for the wave equation in the domain of outer communications of extremal Reissner-Nordstrom up to and including the future event horizon. We show that such an estimate requires 1) a higher degree of regularity for the initial data, reminiscent of the regularity loss in the high-frequency trapping estimates on the photon sphere, and 2) the vanishing of an explicit quantity that depends on the restriction of the initial data on the horizon. The latter condition demonstrates t…
