We prove high energy estimates for the boundary values of the weighted resolvent of the Laplacian on an asymptotically hyperbolic manifold. Our point is to use weights that fit the pseudo-differential calculus associated with the asymptotically hyperbolic geometry. Our proof is a combination of a trick using Mourre theory and of results by Froese-Hislop and Cardoso-Vodev.
In this paper we consider the Witten Laplacian on 0-forms and give sufficient conditions under which the Witten Laplacian admits a compact resolvent. These conditions are imposed on the potential itself, involving the control of high order derivatives by lower ones, as well as the control of the positive eigenvalues of the Hessian matrix. This compactness criterion for resolvent is inspired by the one for the Fokker-Planck operator. Our method relies on the nilpotent group techniques developed by Helffer-Nourrigat [Hypoellipticité maximale pour des opérateurs polynômes de champs de vecteurs, 1…
The difference of the resolvents of two Laplacians on a half-space subject to Robin boundary conditions is studied. In general this difference is not compact, but it will be shown that it is compact and even belongs to some Schatten-von-Neumann class, if the coefficients in the boundary condition are sufficiently close to each other in a proper sense. In certain cases the resolvent difference is shown to belong even to the same Schatten-von Neumann class as it is known for the resolvent difference of two Robin Laplacians on a domain with a compact boundary.
This paper has two main goals. First, we are concerned with the classification of self-adjoint extensions of the Laplacian $-Δ\big|_{C^\infty_0(Ω)}$ in $L^2(Ω; d^n x)$. Here, the domain $Ω$ belongs to a subclass of bounded Lipschitz domains (which we term quasi-convex domains), which contain all convex domains, as well as all domains of class $C^{1,r}$, for $r\in(1/2,1)$. Second, we establish Krein-type formulas for the resolvents of the various self-adjoint extensions of the Laplacian in quasi-convex domains and study the properties of the corresponding Weyl--Titchmarsh operators (or energy-d…
This paper proves that the domain of the Laplacian, $\DEL,$ on a closed Riemannian manifold, $(M,g),$ is compactly embedded in $L^{2} (M) .$ Particularly, the resolvent of the Laplacian, $(\DEL + 1)^{-1},$ is shown to be compactly embedded on the torus.
In this paper we continue our program of extending the methods of geometric scattering theory to encompass the analysis of the Laplacian on symmetric spaces of rank greater than one and their geometric perturbations. In our previous work we described the resolvent, and specifically the asymptotic behavior of the Green's function, on SL(3)/SO(3) using methods from three-particle scattering. Here we extend the technique of complex scaling to symmetric spaces to show that the resolvent continues analytically across the spectrum.
In this note we investigate the asymptotic behaviour of the $s$-numbers of the resolvent difference of two generalized self-adjoint, maximal dissipative or maximal accumulative Robin Laplacians on a bounded domain $Ω$ with smooth boundary $\partialΩ$. For this we apply the recently introduced abstract notion of quasi boundary triples and Weyl functions from extension theory of symmetric operators together with Krein type resolvent formulae and well-known eigenvalue asymptotics of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on $\partialΩ$. It will be shown that the resolvent difference of two generalized Rob…
We provide a method for obtaining upper estimates of the resolvent kernel of the Laplacian on a post-critically finite self-similar fractal that relies on a self-similar series decomposition of the resolvent. Decay estimates on the positive real axis are proved by analyzing functions satisfying an interior eigenfunction condition with positive eigenvalue. These lead to estimates on the complement of the negative real axis via the Phragmen-Lindelof theorem. Applications are given to kernels for functions of the Laplacian, including the heat kernel, and to proving the existence of a self-similar…
For geometrically finite hyperbolic manifolds $Γ\backslash H^{n+1}$, we prove the meromorphic extension of the resolvent of Laplacian, Poincaré series, Einsenstein series and scattering operator to the whole complex plane. We also deduce the asymptotics of lattice points of $Γ$ in large balls of $H^{n+1}$ in terms of the Hausdorff dimension of the limit set of $Γ$.
We consider the resolvent on asymptotically Euclidean warped product manifolds in an appropriate 0-Gevrey class, with trapped sets consisting of only finitely many components. We prove that the high-frequency resolvent is either bounded by $C_ε|λ|^ε$ for any $ε>0$, or blows up faster than any polynomial (at least along a subsequence). A stronger result holds if the manifold is analytic. The method of proof is to exploit the warped product structure to separate variables, obtaining a one-dimensional semiclassical Schrödinger operator. We then classify the microlocal resolvent behaviour associat…
We show that the resolvent of the Laplacian on asymptotically hyperbolic spaces extends meromorphically with finite rank poles to the complex plane if and only if the metric is `even' (in a sense). If it is not even, there exist some cases where the resolvent has an essential singularity in the non-physical sheet.
We consider families of degenerating hyperbolic surfaces. The surfaces are geometrically finite of fixed topological type. Let Z(s) be the Selberg Zeta function of a surface, and let Z_d(s) be the contribution of the pinched geodesics to the Zeta function. Extending a result of Hejhal and Wolpert, we prove that the quotient of these two terms converges to the Zeta function of the limit surface for all arguments s with re(s)>1/2. The technique is an examination of resolvent of the Laplacian, which is composed from that for elementary surfaces via meromorphic Fredholm theory. The resolvent is sh…
We construct a semiclassical parametrix for the resolvent of the Laplacian acing on functions on non-trapping conformally compact manifolds with variable sectional curvature at infinity, we use it to prove high energy resolvent estimates and to show existence of resonance free strips of arbitrary height away from the imaginary axis. We then use the results of Datchev and Vasy on gluing semiclassical resolvent estimates to extend these results to conformally compact manifolds with normal hyperbolic trapping.
We analyze the resolvent and define the scattering matrix for asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds with metrics which have a polyhomogeneous expansion near the boundary, and also prove that there is always an essential singularity of the resolvent in this setting. We use this analysis to prove an inverse result for conformally compact odd dimensional Einstein manifolds.
We present a detailed study of the scattering system given by the Neumann Laplacian on the discrete half-space perturbed by a periodic potential at the boundary. We derive asymptotic resolvent expansions at thresholds and eigenvalues, we prove the continuity of the scattering matrix, and we establish new formulas for the wave operators. Along the way, our analysis puts into evidence a surprising relation between some properties of the potential, like the parity of its period, and the behaviour of the integral kernel of the wave operators.
The main objective of the present work is to study the negative spectrum of (differential) Laplace operators on metric graphs as well as their resolvents and associated heat semigroups. We prove an upper bound on the number of negative eigenvalues and a lower bound on the spectrum of Laplace operators. Also we provide a sufficient condition for the associated heat semigroup to be positivity preserving.
We prove uniform $L^p$ resolvent estimates for the stationary damped wave operator. The uniform $L^p$ resolvent estimates for the Laplace operator on a compact smooth Riemannian manifold without boundary were first established by Dos Santos Ferreira-Kenig-Salo and advanced further by Bourgain-Shao-Sogge-Yao. Here we provide an alternative proof relying on the techniques of semiclassical Strichartz estimates. This approach allows us also to handle non-self-adjoint perturbations of the Laplacian and embeds very naturally in the semiclassical spectral analysis framework.
In this paper we study the Fokker-Planck operator with potential V(x), and analyze some kind of conditions imposed on the potential to ensure the validity of global hypoelliptic estimates. As a consequence, we obtain the compactness of resolvent of the Fokker-Planck operator if either the Witten Laplacian on 0-forms has a compact resolvent or some additional assumption on the behavior of the potential at infinity is fulfilled. This work improves the previous results of Hérau-Nier and Helffer-Nier, by obtaining a better global hypoelliptic estimate under weaker assumptions on the potential.
We show a norm convergence result for the Laplacian on a class of post-critically finite fractals with arbitrary Borel regular probability measure which can be approximated by a sequence of finite-dimensional graph Laplacians with corresponding discrete probability measures. As a consequence other functions of the Laplacians (heat operator, spectral projections etc.) converge as well in operator norm. One also deduces convergence of the spectrum and the eigenfunctions in energy norm.
Manifolds with infinite cylindrical ends have continuous spectrum of increasing multiplicity as energy grows, and in general embedded resonances (resonances on the real line, embedded in the continuous spectrum) and embedded eigenvalues can accumulate at infinity. However, we prove that if geodesic trapping is sufficiently mild, then the number of embedded resonances and eigenvalues is finite, and moreover the cutoff resolvent is uniformly bounded at high energies. We obtain as a corollary the existence of resonance free regions near the continuous spectrum. We also obtain improved estimates w…
Let $(M,g)$ be a compact smoothly stratified pseudomanifold with an iterated cone-edge metric satisfying a spectral Witt condition. Under these assumptions the Hodge-Laplacian $Δ$ is essentially self-adjoint. We establish the asymptotic expansion for the resolvent trace of $Δ$. Our method proceeds by induction on the depth and applies in principle to a larger class of second-order differential operators of regular-singular type, e.g., Dirac Laplacians. Our arguments are functional analytic, do not rely on microlocal techniques and are very explicit. The results of this paper provide a basis fo…
Manifolds with fibered cusps are a class of complete noncompact Riemannian manifolds including all locally symmetric spaces of rank one. We study the spectrum of the Hodge Laplacian with coefficients in a flat bundle on a closed manifold undergoing degeneration to a manifold with fibered cusps. We obtain precise asymptotics for the resolvent, the heat kernel, and the determinant of the Laplacian. Using these asymptotics we obtain a topological description of the analytic torsion on a manifold with fibered cusps in terms of the R-torsion of the underlying manifold with boundary.
We prove that the Folland's fundamental solution for the sub-Laplacian on Heisenberg groups can also be derived form the resolvent kernel of this sub-Laplacian. This provides us with a new integral representation for this fundamental solution.
Let $X$ be a connected Riemannian manifold such that the resolvent of the free Laplacian $(Δ-z)^{-1}, z\in\C\setminus\R^{+},$ has a meromorphic continuation through $\R^{+}$. The poles of this continuation are called resonances. When $X$ has some symmetries, we construct complex-valued potentials, $V$, such that the resolvent of $Δ+V$, which has also a meromorphic continuation, has the same resonances with multiplicities as the free Laplacian.
In this paper we continue our program of extending the methods of geometric scattering theory to encompass the analysis of the Laplacian on symmetric spaces of rank greater than one and their geometric perturbations. Our goal here is to explain how analysis of the Laplacian on the globally symmetric space $\SL(3,\RR)/\SO(3,\RR)$ is very closely related to quantum three-body scattering. In particular, we adapt geometric constructions from recent advances in that field by one of us (A.V.), as well as from our previous work [Mazzeo-Vasy:Resolvents] concerning resolvents for product spaces, to giv…
Since the publication of the important work of Rauch and Taylor (Potential and scattering theory on wildly perturbed domains, JFA, 1975) a lot has been done to analyse wild perturbations of the Laplace operator. Here we present results concerning the norm convergence of the resolvent. We consider a (not necessarily compact) manifold with many small balls removed, the number of balls can increase as the radius is shrinking, the number of balls can also be infinite. If the distance of the balls shrinks less fast than the radius, then we show that the Neumann Laplacian converges to the unperturbe…
Let $M^\circ$ be a complete noncompact manifold and $g$ an asymptotically conic Riemaniann metric on $M^\circ$, in the sense that $M^\circ$ compactifies to a manifold with boundary $M$ in such a way that $g$ becomes a scattering metric on $M$. Let $Δ$ be the positive Laplacian associated to $g$, and $P = Δ+ V$, where $V$ is a potential function obeying certain conditions. We analyze the asymptotics of the spectral measure $dE(λ) = (λ/πi) \big(R(λ+i0) - R(λ- i0) \big)$ of $P_+^{1/2}$, where $R(λ) = (P - λ^2)^{-1}$, as $λ\to 0$, in a manner similar to that done previously by the second author an…
In this paper we develop certain aspects of perturbation theory for self-adjoint operators subject to small variations of their domains. We use the abstract theory of boundary triplets to quantify such perturbations and give the second order asymptotic analysis for resolvents, spectral projections, discrete eigenvalues of the corresponding self-adjoint operators. In particular, we derive explicit formulas for the first variation and the Hessian of the eigenvalue curves bifurcating from a discrete eigenvalue of an unperturbed operator. An application is given to a matrix valued Robin Laplacian …
Consider a compact manifold with boundary $M$ with a scattering metric $g$ or, equivalently, an asymptotically conic manifold $(M^\circ, g)$. (Euclidean $\mathbb{R}^n$, with a compactly supported metric perturbation, is an example of such a space.) Let $Δ$ be the positive Laplacian on $(M,g)$, and $V$ a smooth potential on $M$ which decays to second order at infinity. In this paper we construct the kernel of the operator $(h^2 Δ+ V - (λ_0 \pm i0)^2)^{-1}$, at a nontrapping energy $λ_0 > 0$, uniformly for $h \in (0, h_0)$, $h_0 > 0$ small, within a class of Legendre distributions on manifolds w…
We consider self-adjoint operators of black-box type which are exponentially close to the free Laplacian near infinity, and prove an exponential bound for the resolvent in a strip away from resonances. Here the resonances are defined as poles of the meromorphic continuation of the resolvent between appropriate exponentially weighted spaces. We then use a local version of the maximum principle to prove that any cluster of real quasimodes generates at least as many resonances, with multiplicity, rapidly converging to the quasimodes.
In the present paper, we prove an abstract functional analytic criterion for a class of linear partial differential operators acting on a domain $Ω\subseteq\Bbb R^n$ which are elliptic in the interior to have compact resolvent. This extends known results for magnetic Schrödinger operators to more general differential operators. We point out the relationship between the Dirac operator in real dimension two and the $\bar\partial$-Laplacian on a certain weighted space on $\Bbb C$ and we use this connection to prove a non-compactness result for its resolvent.
Using coordinates $(x,y)\in \mathbb R\times \mathbb R^{d-1}$, we introduce the notion that an unbounded domain in $\mathbb R^d$ is star shaped with respect to $x=\pm \infty$. For such domains, we prove estimates on the resolvent of the Dirichlet Laplacian near the continuous spectrum. When the domain has infinite cylindrical ends, this has consequences for wave decay and resonance-free regions. Our results also cover examples beyond the star-shaped case, including scattering by a strictly convex obstacle inside a straight planar waveguide.
For a class of manifolds that includes quotients of real hyperbolic space by a convex co-compact discrete group, we show that the resonances of the meromorphically continued resolvent kernel for the Laplacian coincide, with multiplicities, with the poles of the meromorphically continued scattering operator. In order to carry out the proof, we use Shmuel Agmon's perturbation theory of resonances to show that both resolvent resonances and scattering poles are simple for generic potential perturbations.
In this note, we consider semiclassical scattering on a manifold which is Euclidean near infinity or asymptotically hyperbolic. We show that, if the cut-off resolvent satisfies polynomial estimates in a strip of size $O(h |\log h|^{-α})$ below the real axis, for some $α\geq 0$, then the cut-off resolvent is actually bounded by $O(|\log h|^{α+1} h^{-1})$ in this strip. As an application, we improve slightly the estimates on the real axis given by Bourgain and Dyatlov in the case of convex co-compact surfaces.
We present asymptotically sharp inequalities, containing a second term, for the Dirichlet and Neumann eigenvalues of the Laplacian on a domain, which are complementary to the familiar Berezin-Li-Yau and Kröger inequalities in the limit as the eigenvalues tend to infinity. We accomplish this in the framework of the Riesz mean $R_1(z)$ of the eigenvalues by applying the averaged variational principle with families of test functions that have been corrected for boundary behaviour.
For a second-order symmetric strongly elliptic operator A on a smooth bounded open set Ωin R^n with boundary Σ, the mixed problem is defined by a Neumann-type condition on a part Sigma_+ of the boundary and a Dirichlet condition on the other part Sigma_-. We show a Krein resolvent formula, where the difference between its resolvent and the Dirichlet resolvent is expressed in terms of operators acting on Sobolev spaces over Sigma_+. This is used to obtain a new Weyl-type spectral asymptotics formula for the resolvent difference (where upper estimates were known before), namely s_j j^{2/(n-1)}\t…
We present asymptotically sharp inequalities for the eigenvalues $μ_k$ of the Laplacian on a domain with Neumann boundary conditions, using the averaged variational principle introduced in \cite{HaSt14}. For the Riesz mean $R_1(z)$ of the eigenvalues we improve the known sharp semiclassical bound in terms of the volume of the domain with a second term with the best possible expected power of $z$. In addition, we obtain two-sided bounds for individual $μ_k$, which are semiclassically sharp. In a final section, we remark upon the Dirichlet case with the same methods.
For the scattering system given by the Laplacian in a half-space with a periodic boundary condition, we derive resolvent expansions at embedded thresholds, we prove the continuity of the scattering matrix, and we establish new formulas for the wave operators.
We develop the complex scaling method for the Dirichlet Laplacian in a domain with asymptotically cylindrical end. We define resonances as discrete eigenvalues of non-selfadjoint operators, obtained as deformations of the selfadjoint Dirichlet Laplacian $Δ$ by means of the complex scaling. The resonances are identified with the poles of the resolvent matrix elements $((Δ-μ)^{-1}F, G)$ meromorphic continuation in $μ$ across the essential spectrum of $Δ$, where $F$ and $G$ are elements of an explicitly given set of partial analytic vectors. It turns out that the Dirichlet Laplacian has no singul…
We define scattering phases associated to pairs of Laplacians on asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds, and prove some spectral asymptotics for them. These result are applications of Isozaki-Kitada's constructions which we adapt to this framework.
As a consequence of a result of Cardoso and Vodev, we show that the resolvent of the Laplacian on asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds is analytic in an exponential neighbourhood of the critical line. The case of non-trapping metrics with constant curvature near infinity is also considered: there exists a strip with at most a finite number of resonances.
We develop the complex scaling for a manifold with an asymptotically cylindrical end under an assumption on the analyticity of the metric with respect to the axial coordinate of the end. We allow for arbitrarily slow convergence of the metric to its limit at infinity, and prove a variant of the Aguilar-Balslev-Combes theorem for the Laplacian $Δ$ on functions. In the case of a manifold with (noncompact) boundary it is either the Dirichlet or the Neumann Laplacian. We introduce resonances as the discrete non-real eigenvalues of non-selfadjoint operators, obtained as deformations of the Laplacia…
For certain Dirac operators $ð_ϕ$ associated to a fibered boundary metric $g_ϕ$, we provide a pseudodifferential characterization of the limiting behavior of $(ð_ϕ+kγ)^{-1}$ as $k\searrow 0$, where $γ$ is a self-adjoint operator anti-commuting with $ð_ϕ$ and whose square is the identity. This yields in particular a pseudodifferential characterization of the low energy limit of the resolvent of $ð_ϕ^2$, generalizing a result of Guillarmou and Sher about the low energy limit of the resolvent of the Hodge Laplacian of an asymptotically conical metric. As an application, we use our result to give …
We prove norm estimates for the difference of resolvents of operators and their discrete counterparts, embedded into the continuum using biorthogonal Riesz sequences. The estimates are given in the operator norm for operators on square integrable functions, and depend explicitly on the mesh size for the discrete operators. The operators are a sum of a Fourier multiplier and a multiplicative potential. The Fourier multipliers include the fractional Laplacian and the pseudo-relativistic free Hamiltonian. The potentials are real, bounded, and Hölder continuous. As a side-product, the Hausdorff di…
We prove that the optimal cluster problem for the sum of the first Robin eigenvalue of the Laplacian, in the limit of a large number of convex cells, is asymptotically solved by (the Cheeger sets of) the honeycomb of regular hexagons. The same result is established for the Robin torsional rigidity.
