Since the publication of the important work of Rauch and Taylor (Potential and scattering theory on wildly perturbed domains, JFA, 1975) a lot has been done to analyse wild perturbations of the Laplace operator. Here we present results concerning the norm convergence of the resolvent. We consider a (not necessarily compact) manifold with many small balls removed, the number of balls can increase as the radius is shrinking, the number of balls can also be infinite. If the distance of the balls shrinks less fast than the radius, then we show that the Neumann Laplacian converges to the unperturbed Laplacian, i.e., the obstacles vanish. In the Dirichlet case, we have two cases: if the balls are too sparse, the limit operator is again the unperturbed one, while if the balls concentrate at a certain region (they become "solid" in a region), the limit operator is the Dirichlet Laplacian on the complement outside the solid region. Our work is based on a norm convergence result for operators acting in varying Hilbert spaces developed by the second author.
We consider a general second order matrix operator in a multi-dimensional domain subject to a classical boundary condition. This operator is perturbed by a first order differential operator, the coefficients of which depend arbitrarily on a small multi-dimensional parameter. We study the existence of a limiting (homogenized) operator in the sense of the norm resolvent convergence for such perturbed operator. The first part of our main results states that the norm resolvent convergence is equivalent to the convergence of the coefficients in the perturbing operator in certain space of multiplier…
We present a detailed study of the scattering system given by the Neumann Laplacian on the discrete half-space perturbed by a periodic potential at the boundary. We derive asymptotic resolvent expansions at thresholds and eigenvalues, we prove the continuity of the scattering matrix, and we establish new formulas for the wave operators. Along the way, our analysis puts into evidence a surprising relation between some properties of the potential, like the parity of its period, and the behaviour of the integral kernel of the wave operators.
We consider an infinite planar straight strip perforated by small holes along a curve. In such domain, we consider a general second order elliptic operator subject to classical boundary conditions on the holes. Assuming that the perforation is non-periodic and satisfies rather weak assumptions, we describe all possible homogenized problems. Our main result is the norm resolvent convergence of the perturbed operator to a homogenized one in various operator norms and the estimates for the rate of convergence. On the basis of the norm resolvent convergence, we prove the convergence of the spectru…
In a planar infinite strip with a fast oscillating boundary we consider an elliptic operator assuming that both the period and the amplitude of the oscillations are small. On the oscillating boundary we impose Dirichlet, Neumann or Robin boundary condition. In all cases we describe the homogenized operator, establish the uniform resolvent convergence of the perturbed resolvent to the homogenized one, and prove the estimates for the rate of convergence. These results are obtained as the order of the amplitude of the oscillations is less, equal or greater than that of the period. It is shown tha…
Finiteness of the point spectrum of linear operators acting in a Banach space is investigated from point of view of perturbation theory. In the first part of the paper we present an abstract result based on analytical continuation of the resolvent function through continuous spectrum. In the second part, the abstract result is applied to differential operators which can be represented as a differential operator with periodic coefficients perturbed by an arbitrary subordinated differential operator.
We consider Ornstein-Uhlenbeck operators perturbed by a radial potential. Under weak assumptions we prove a spectral mapping theorem for the generated semigroup. The proof relies on a perturbative construction of the resolvent, based on angular separation, and the Gearhart-Prüß Theorem.

We consider self-adjoint Dirac operators $\ham{D}=\ham{D}_0 + V(x)$, where $\ham{D}_0$ is the free three-dimensional Dirac operator and $V(x)$ is a smooth compactly supported Hermitian matrix. We define resonances of $\ham{D}$ as poles of the meromorphic continuation of its cut-off resolvent. An upper bound on the number of resonances in disks, an estimate on the scattering determinant and the Lifshits-Krein trace formula then leads to a global Poisson wave trace formula for resonances of $\ham{D}$.
For two self-adjoint operators $H,A$ we show that a general commutation relation of type $[H,\mathrm{i}A]=Q(H)+K$, in addition to regularity of $H$ and Kato-smoothness of $K$, guarantee pointwise in time decay rates of diverse order. The methodology is based on the construction of a modified conjugate operator $\tilde{A}$ that reduces the problem to previously developed estimates when $K=0$. Our results apply to energy thresholds and do not rely on resolvent estimates. We discuss applications for the Schrödinger equation (SE) with potential of critical decay, and for the free SE on an asymptot…
In this paper, we study the scattering theory of a class of continuum Schrödinger operators with random sparse potentials. The existence and completeness of wave operators are proven by establishing the uniform boundedness of modified free resolvents and modified perturbed resolvents, and by invoking a previous result on the absence of absolutely continuous spectrum below zero.
We study spectral properties of the Schroedinger operator with an imaginary sign potential on the real line. By constructing the resolvent kernel, we show that the pseudospectra of this operator are highly non-trivial, because of a blow-up of the resolvent at infinity. Furthermore, we derive estimates on the location of eigenvalues of the operator perturbed by complex potentials. The overall analysis demonstrates striking differences with respect to the weak-coupling behaviour of the Laplacian.
We study linear perturbations of Donoghue classes of scalar Herglotz-Nevanlinna functions by a real parameter $Q$ and their representations as impedance of conservative L-systems. Perturbation classes $\mathfrak M^Q$, $\mathfrak M^Q_κ$, $\mathfrak M^{-1,Q}_κ$ are introduced and for each class the realization theorem is stated and proved. We use a new approach that leads to explicit new formulas describing the von Neumann parameter of the main operator of a realizing L-system and the unimodular one corresponding to a self-adjoint extension of the symmetric part of the main operator. The dynamic…
We consider the Schrödinger operator on a star shaped graph with $n$ edges joined at a single vertex. We derive an expression for the trace of the difference of the perturbed and unperturbed resolvent in terms of a Wronskian. This leads to representations for the perturbation determinant and the spectral shift function, and to an analog of Levinson's formula.
We consider a family $\{Ω^\varepsilon\}_{\varepsilon>0}$ of periodic domains in $\mathbb{R}^2$ with waveguide geometry and analyse spectral properties of the Neumann Laplacian $-Δ_{Ω^\varepsilon}$ on $Ω^\varepsilon$. The waveguide $Ω^\varepsilon$ is a union of a thin straight strip of the width $\varepsilon$ and a family of small protuberances with the so-called "room-and-passage" geometry. The protuberances are attached periodically, with a period $\varepsilon$, along the strip upper boundary. For $\varepsilon\to 0$ we prove a (kind of) resolvent convergence of $-Δ_{Ω^\varepsilon}$ to a certa…
In a thin multidimensional layer we consider a second order differential PT-symmetric operator. The operator is of rather general form and its coefficients are arbitrary functions depending both on slow and fast variables. The PT-symmetry of the operator is ensured by the boundary conditions of Robin type with pure imaginary coefficient. In the work we determine the limiting operator, prove the uniform resolvent convergence of the perturbed operator to the limiting one, and derive the estimates for the rates of convergence. We establish the convergence of the spectrum of perturbed operator to …
In the setting of adjoint pairs of operators we consider the question: to what extent does the Weyl M-function see the same singularities as the resolvent of a certain restriction $A_B$ of the maximal operator? We obtain results showing that it is possible to describe explicitly certain spaces $\Sc$ and $\tilde{\Sc}$ such that the resolvent bordered by projections onto these subspaces is analytic everywhere that the M-function is analytic. We present three examples -- one involving a Hain-Lüst type operator, one involving a perturbed Friedrichs operator and one involving a simple ordinary diff…
The spectral properties of the singularly perturbed self-adjoint Landau Hamiltonian $A_α=(i \nabla + A)^2 + αδ$ in $L^2(R^2)$ with a $δ$-potential supported on a finite $C^{1,1}$-smooth curve $Σ$ are studied. Here $A = \frac{1}{2} B (-x_2, x_1)^\top$ is the vector potential, $B>0$ is the strength of the homogeneous magnetic field, and $α\in L^\infty(Σ)$ is a position-dependent real coefficient modeling the strength of the singular interaction on the curve $Σ$. After a general discussion of the qualitative spectral properties of $A_α$ and its resolvent, one of the main objectives in the present…
We consider Laplacian in a planar strip with Dirichlet boundary condition on the upper boundary and with frequent alternation boundary condition on the lower boundary. The alternation is introduced by the periodic partition of the boundary into small segments on which Dirichlet and Neumann conditions are imposed in turns. We show that under the certain condition the homogenized operator is the Dirichlet Laplacian and prove the uniform resolvent convergence. The spectrum of the perturbed operator consists of its essential part only and has a band structure. We construct the leading terms of the…
In this work we prove that the eigenvalues of the $n$-dimensional massive Dirac operator $\mathscr{D}_0 + V$, $n\ge2$, perturbed by a possibly non-Hermitian potential $V$, are localized in the union of two disjoint disks of the complex plane, provided that $V$ is sufficiently small with respect to the mixed norms $L^1_{x_j} L^\infty_{\widehat{x}_j}$, for $j\in\{1,\dots,n\}$. In the massless case, we prove instead that the discrete spectrum is empty under the same smallness assumption on $V$, and in particular the spectrum is the same of the unperturbed operator, namely $σ(\mathscr{D}_0+V)=σ(\m…
We consider an eigenvalue problem for a divergence form elliptic operator $A_ε$ with high contrast periodic coefficients with period $ε$ in each coordinate, where $ε$ is a small parameter. The coefficients are perturbed on a bounded domain of `order one' size. The local perturbation of coefficients for such operator could result in emergence of localized waves - eigenfunctions with corresponding eigenvalues lying in the gaps of the Floquet-Bloch spectrum. We prove that, for the so-called double porosity type scaling, the eigenfunctions decay exponentially at infinity, uniformly in $ε$. Then, u…
