We consider families of degenerating hyperbolic surfaces. The surfaces are geometrically finite of fixed topological type. Let Z(s) be the Selberg Zeta function of a surface, and let Z_d(s) be the contribution of the pinched geodesics to the Zeta function. Extending a result of Hejhal and Wolpert, we prove that the quotient of these two terms converges to the Zeta function of the limit surface for all arguments s with re(s)>1/2. The technique is an examination of resolvent of the Laplacian, which is composed from that for elementary surfaces via meromorphic Fredholm theory. The resolvent is shown to converge on the complement of the essential spectrum of the limit surface. We also use this property to define approximate Eisenstein functions and scattering matrices.
For geometrically finite hyperbolic manifolds $Γ\backslash H^{n+1}$, we prove the meromorphic extension of the resolvent of Laplacian, Poincaré series, Einsenstein series and scattering operator to the whole complex plane. We also deduce the asymptotics of lattice points of $Γ$ in large balls of $H^{n+1}$ in terms of the Hausdorff dimension of the limit set of $Γ$.
In this paper we continue our program of extending the methods of geometric scattering theory to encompass the analysis of the Laplacian on symmetric spaces of rank greater than one and their geometric perturbations. In our previous work we described the resolvent, and specifically the asymptotic behavior of the Green's function, on SL(3)/SO(3) using methods from three-particle scattering. Here we extend the technique of complex scaling to symmetric spaces to show that the resolvent continues analytically across the spectrum.
Let $(M,g)$ be a globally symmetric space of noncompact type, of arbitrary rank, and $Δ$ its Laplacian. We prove the existence of a meromorphic continuation of the resolvent $(Δ-\ev)^{-1}$ across the continuous spectrum to a Riemann surface multiply covering the plane. The methods are purely analytic and are adapted from quantum $N$-body scattering.
We show the analytic continuation of the resolvent of the Laplacian on asymptotically hyperbolic spaces on differential forms, including high energy estimates in strips. This is achieved by placing the spectral family of the Laplacian within the framework developed, and applied to scalar problems, by the author recently, roughly by extending the problem across the boundary of the compactification of the asymptotically hyperbolic space in a suitable manner. The main novelty is that the non-scalar nature of the operator is dealt with by relating it to a problem on an asymptotically Minkowski spa…
We consider the first non-zero eigenvalue $λ_1$ of the Laplacian on hyperbolic surfaces for which one disconnecting collar degenerates and prove that $8π\nabla\log(λ_1)$ essentially agrees with the dual of the differential of the degenerating Fenchel-Nielsen length coordinate. As a consequence, we can improve previous results of Schoen, Wolpert, Yau and Burger to obtain estimates with optimal error rates and obtain new information on the leading order terms of the polyhomogeneous expansion of $λ_1$ of Albin, Rochon and Sher.
On an asymptotically conic manifold $(M,g)$, we analyze the asymptotics of the integral kernel of the resolvent $R_q(k):=(Δ_q+k^2)^{-1}$ of the Hodge Laplacian $Δ_q$ on $q$-forms as the spectral parameter $k$ approaches zero, assuming that 0 is not a resonance. The first application we give is an $L^p$ Sobolev estimate for $d+δ$ and $Δ_q$. Then we obtain a complete characterization of the range of $p>1$ for which the Riesz transform for $q$-forms $T_q=(d+δ)Δ_q^{-1/2}$ is bounded on $L^p$. Finally, we obtain an asymptotic formula for the analytic torsion of a family of smooth compact Riemannian…
Manifolds with fibered cusps are a class of complete noncompact Riemannian manifolds including all locally symmetric spaces of rank one. We study the spectrum of the Hodge Laplacian with coefficients in a flat bundle on a closed manifold undergoing degeneration to a manifold with fibered cusps. We obtain precise asymptotics for the resolvent, the heat kernel, and the determinant of the Laplacian. Using these asymptotics we obtain a topological description of the analytic torsion on a manifold with fibered cusps in terms of the R-torsion of the underlying manifold with boundary.
We develop an asymptotic expansion of the spectral measures on a degenerating family of hyperbolic Riemann surfaces of finite volume. As an application of our results, we study the asymptotic behavior of weighted counting functions, which, if $M$ is compact, is defined for $w \geq 0$ and $T > 0$ by $$N_{M,w}(T) = \sum\limits_{λ_n \leq T}(T-λ_n)^w $$ where $\{λ_n\}$ is the set of eigenvalues of the Laplacian which acts on the space of smooth functions on $M$. If $M$ is non-compact, then the weighted counting function is defined via the inverse Laplace transform. Now let $M_{\ell}$ denote a dege…
Let $(M,J)$ be a compact complex manifold of complex dimension $m$ and let $g_s$ be a one-parameter family of Hermitian forms on $M$ that are smooth and positive definite for each fixed $s\in (0,1]$ and that somehow degenerates to a Hermitian pseudometric $h$ for $s$ tending to $0$. In this paper under rather general assumptions on $g_s$ we prove various spectral convergence type theorems for the family of Hodge-Kodaira Laplacians $Δ_{\overline{\partial},m,0,s}$ associated to $g_s$ and acting on the canonical bundle of $M$. In particular we show that, as $s$ tends to zero, the eigenvalues, the…
Let $(X,h)$ be a compact and irreducible Hermitian complex space of complex dimension $m$. In this paper we are interested in the Dolbeault operator acting on the space of $L^2$ sections of the canonical bundle of $reg(X)$, the regular part of $X$. More precisely let $\overline{\mathfrak{d}}_{m,0}:L^2Ω^{m,0}(reg(X),h)\rightarrow L^2Ω^{m,1}(reg(X),h)$ be an arbitrarily fixed closed extension of $\overline{\partial}_{m,0}:L^2Ω^{m,0}(reg(X),h)\rightarrow L^2Ω^{m,1}(reg(X),h)$ where the domain of the latter operator is $Ω_c^{m,0}(reg(X))$. We establish various properties such as closed range of $\…
In this paper we continue our program of extending the methods of geometric scattering theory to encompass the analysis of the Laplacian on symmetric spaces of rank greater than one and their geometric perturbations. Our goal here is to explain how analysis of the Laplacian on the globally symmetric space $\SL(3,\RR)/\SO(3,\RR)$ is very closely related to quantum three-body scattering. In particular, we adapt geometric constructions from recent advances in that field by one of us (A.V.), as well as from our previous work [Mazzeo-Vasy:Resolvents] concerning resolvents for product spaces, to giv…
In this paper we examine the Laplacian on the product of two asymptotically hyperbolic (or conformally compact, as they are often called) spaces from the point of view of geometric scattering theory. In particular, we describe the asymptotic behavior of the resolvent applied to Schwartz functions and that of the resolvent kernel itself. We use these results to find the Martin boundary of the product space. This behaves (nearly) as expected when the factors have no $L^2$ eigenvalues, but it experiences a substantial collapse in the presence of such eigenvalues.
We prove the meromorphic extension to C for the resolvent of the Laplacian on a class of geometrically finite hyperbolic manifolds with infinite volume and we give a polynomial bound on the number of resonances. This class notably contains the geometrically finite quotients with rational non-maximal rank cusps previously studied by Froese-Hislop-Perry.
In this paper we describe a new method for analyzing the Laplacian on asymptotically hyperbolic spaces, which was introduced recently by the author. This new method in particular constructs the analytic continuation of the resolvent for even metrics (in the sense of Guillarmou), and gives high energy estimates in strips. The key idea is an extension across the boundary for a problem obtained from the Laplacian shifted by the spectral parameter. The extended problem is non-elliptic -- indeed, on the other side it is related to the Klein-Gordon equation on an asymptotically de Sitter space -- bu…
For certain Dirac operators $ð_ϕ$ associated to a fibered boundary metric $g_ϕ$, we provide a pseudodifferential characterization of the limiting behavior of $(ð_ϕ+kγ)^{-1}$ as $k\searrow 0$, where $γ$ is a self-adjoint operator anti-commuting with $ð_ϕ$ and whose square is the identity. This yields in particular a pseudodifferential characterization of the low energy limit of the resolvent of $ð_ϕ^2$, generalizing a result of Guillarmou and Sher about the low energy limit of the resolvent of the Hodge Laplacian of an asymptotically conical metric. As an application, we use our result to give …
In this paper we consider certain asymptotically Euclidean spaces, namely compact manifolds with boundary X equipped with a scattering metric g, as defined by Melrose. We then consider Hamiltonians H which are `short-range' self-adjoint perturbations of the Laplacian of g. Melrose and Zworski have given a detailed description of the associated scattering matrix and Poisson operator as a Fourier integral operator and a (singular) Legendre distribution respectively. In this paper we describe the kernel of the spectral projections and the boundary value of the resolvent at the real axis. We defin…
We consider the Neumann Laplacian acting on square-integrable functions on a triangle in the hyperbolic plane that has one cusp. We show that the generic such triangle has no eigenvalues embedded in its continuous spectrum. To prove this result we study the behavior of the real-analytic eigenvalue branches of a degenerating family of triangles. In particular, we use a careful analysis of spectral projections near the crossings of these eigenvalue branches with the eigenvalue branches of a model operator.
Let X=G/K be a symmetric space of noncompact type and let L be the Laplacian associated with a G-invariant metric on X. We show that the resolvent kernel of L admits a holomorphic extension to a Riemann surface depending on the rank of the symmetric space. This Riemann surface is a branched cover of the complex plane with a certain part of the real axis removed. It has a branching point at the bottom of the spectrum of L. It is further shown that this branching point is quadratic if the rank of X is odd, and is logarithmic otherwise. In case G has only one conjugacy class of Cartan subalgebras…
We present a new multiparameter resolvent trace expansion for elliptic operators, polyhomogeneous in both the resolvent and auxiliary variables. For elliptic operators on closed manifolds the expansion is a simple consequence of the parameter dependent pseudodifferential calculus. As an additional nontrivial toy example we treat here Sturm-Liouville operators with separated boundary conditions. As an application we give a new formula, in terms of regularized sums, for the zeta-determinant of an infinite direct sum of Sturm-Liouville operators. The Laplace-Beltrami operator on a surface of revo…
We prove an abstract criterion stating resolvent convergence in the case of operators acting in different Hilbert spaces. This result is then applied to the case of Laplacians on a family $X_\eps$ of branched quantum waveguides. Combining it with an exterior complex scaling we show, in particular, that the resonances on $X_\eps$ approximate those of the Laplacian with ``free'' boundary conditions on $X_0$, the skeleton graph of $X_\eps$.
We show that the resolvent of the Laplacian on SL(3,$\mathbb{R}$)/SO(3) can be lifted to a meromorphic function on a Riemann surface which is a branched covering of $\mathbb{C}$. The poles of this function are called the resonances of the Laplacian. We determine all resonances and show that the corresponding residue operators are given by convolution with spherical functions parameterized by the resonances. The ranges of these operators are infinite dimensional irreducible SL(3,$\mathbb{R}$)-representations. We determine their Langlands parameters and wave front sets. Also, we show that precis…
As a consequence of a result of Cardoso and Vodev, we show that the resolvent of the Laplacian on asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds is analytic in an exponential neighbourhood of the critical line. The case of non-trapping metrics with constant curvature near infinity is also considered: there exists a strip with at most a finite number of resonances.
