In this paper we consider certain asymptotically Euclidean spaces, namely compact manifolds with boundary X equipped with a scattering metric g, as defined by Melrose. We then consider Hamiltonians H which are `short-range' self-adjoint perturbations of the Laplacian of g. Melrose and Zworski have given a detailed description of the associated scattering matrix and Poisson operator as a Fourier integral operator and a (singular) Legendre distribution respectively. In this paper we describe the kernel of the spectral projections and the boundary value of the resolvent at the real axis. We define classes of Legendre distributions on certain types of manifolds with corners, and show that the kernels of the spectral projection and the resolvent are in these classes. We also discuss some applications of these results.
We study resolvents and spectral projections for quadratic differential operators under an assumption of partial ellipticity. We establish exponential-type resolvent bounds for these operators, including Kramers-Fokker-Planck operators with quadratic potentials. For the norms of spectral projections for these operators, we obtain complete asymptotic expansions in dimension one, and for arbitrary dimension, we obtain exponential upper bounds and the rate of exponential growth in a generic situation. We furthermore obtain a complete characterization of those operators with orthogonal spectral pr…
We give resolvent estimates near zero energy on Riemannian scattering, i.e. asymptotically conic, spaces, and their generalizations, using a uniform microlocal Fredholm analysis framework.
We describe how the global operator induced on the boundary of an asymptotically Minkowski space links two asymptotically hyperbolic spaces and an asymptotically de Sitter space, and compute the scattering operator of the linked problem in terms of the scattering operator of the constituent pieces.
We use a Lagrangian regularity perspective to discuss resolvent estimates near zero energy on Riemannian scattering, i.e. asymptotically conic, spaces, and their generalizations. In addition to the Lagrangian perspective we introduce and use a resolved pseudodifferential algebra to deal with zero energy degeneracies in a robust manner.
In this paper we continue our program of extending the methods of geometric scattering theory to encompass the analysis of the Laplacian on symmetric spaces of rank greater than one and their geometric perturbations. In our previous work we described the resolvent, and specifically the asymptotic behavior of the Green's function, on SL(3)/SO(3) using methods from three-particle scattering. Here we extend the technique of complex scaling to symmetric spaces to show that the resolvent continues analytically across the spectrum.
We prove resolvent estimates for semiclassical operators such as $-h^2 Δ+V(x)$ in scattering situations. Provided the set of trapped classical trajectories supports a chaotic flow and is sufficiently filamentary, the analytic continuation of the resolvent is bounded by $h^{-M}$ in a strip whose width is determined by a certain topological pressure associated with the classical flow. This polynomial estimate has applications to local smoothing in Schrödinger propagation and to energy decay of solutions to wave equations.
We study the microlocal structure of the resolvent of the semi-classical Schrodinger operator with short range potential at an energy which is a unique non-degenerate global maximum of the potential. We prove that it is a semi-classical Fourier integral operator quantizing the incoming and outgoing Lagrangian submanifolds associated to the fixed hyperbolic point. We then discuss two applications of this result to describing the structure of the spectral function and the scattering matrix of the Schrodinger operator at the critical energy.
In this paper we continue our program of extending the methods of geometric scattering theory to encompass the analysis of the Laplacian on symmetric spaces of rank greater than one and their geometric perturbations. Our goal here is to explain how analysis of the Laplacian on the globally symmetric space $\SL(3,\RR)/\SO(3,\RR)$ is very closely related to quantum three-body scattering. In particular, we adapt geometric constructions from recent advances in that field by one of us (A.V.), as well as from our previous work [Mazzeo-Vasy:Resolvents] concerning resolvents for product spaces, to giv…
We establish high energy $L^2$ estimates for the restriction of the free Green's function to hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{R}^d$. As an application, we estimate the size of a logarithmic resonance free region for scattering by potentials of the form $V\otimes δ_Γ$, where $Γ\subset \mathbb{R}^d$ is a finite union of compact subsets of embedded hypersurfaces. In odd dimensions we prove a resonance expansion for solutions to the wave equation with such a potential.
In this article, we shall construct the resolvent of Laplacian at high energies near the spectrum on non-product conic manifolds with a single cone tip. Microlocally, the resolvent kernel is the sum of b-pseudodifferential operators, scattering pseudodifferential operators and intersecting Legendrian distributions. As an application, we shall establish Strichartz estimates for Schrödinger equations on non-compact manifolds with multiple non-product conic singularities.
In this note we obtain semiclassical resolvent estimates for non-trapping long range perturbations of the Laplacian on asymptotically Euclidean manifolds. Our proof is based on a positive commutator argument which differs from Mourre-type estimates by making the commutant also positive. The resolvent estimates, including the weighting of the Sobolev spaces in the estimates, are an immediate consequence.
Consider a compact manifold with boundary $M$ with a scattering metric $g$ or, equivalently, an asymptotically conic manifold $(M^\circ, g)$. (Euclidean $\mathbb{R}^n$, with a compactly supported metric perturbation, is an example of such a space.) Let $Δ$ be the positive Laplacian on $(M,g)$, and $V$ a smooth potential on $M$ which decays to second order at infinity. In this paper we construct the kernel of the operator $(h^2 Δ+ V - (λ_0 \pm i0)^2)^{-1}$, at a nontrapping energy $λ_0 > 0$, uniformly for $h \in (0, h_0)$, $h_0 > 0$ small, within a class of Legendre distributions on manifolds w…
In this paper, we study the mapping property form $L^p$ to $L^q$ of the resolvent of the Fourier multiplier operators and scattering theory of generalized Schrödinger operators. Though the first half of the subject is studied in [4], we extend their result to away from the duality line and we also study the Hölder continuity of the resolvent.
Let X be a compact manifold with boundary, and g a scattering metric on X, which may be either of short range or `gravitational' long range type. Thus, g gives X the geometric structure of a complete manifold with an asymptotically conic end. Let H be an operator of the form $H = Δ+ P$, where $Δ$ is the Laplacian with respect to g and P is a self-adjoint first order scattering differential operator with coefficients vanishing at the boundary of X and satisfying a `gravitational' condition. We define a symbol calculus for Legendre distributions on manifolds with codimension two corners and use …
In this paper we develop certain aspects of perturbation theory for self-adjoint operators subject to small variations of their domains. We use the abstract theory of boundary triplets to quantify such perturbations and give the second order asymptotic analysis for resolvents, spectral projections, discrete eigenvalues of the corresponding self-adjoint operators. In particular, we derive explicit formulas for the first variation and the Hessian of the eigenvalue curves bifurcating from a discrete eigenvalue of an unperturbed operator. An application is given to a matrix valued Robin Laplacian …
We consider scattering by general compactly supported semi-classical perturbations of the Euclidean Laplace-Beltrami operator. We show that if the suitably cut-off resolvent of the Hamiltonian quantizes a Lagrangian relation on the product cotangent bundle, the scattering amplitude quantizes the natural scattering relation. In the case when the resolvent is tempered, which is true under some non-resonance assumptions, and when we work microlocally near a non-trapped ray, our result implies that the scattering amplitude defines a semiclassical Fourier integral operator associated to the scatter…
We prove a new polynomial lower bound on the scattering resolvent. For that, we construct a quasimode localized on a trajectory $γ$ which is trapped in the past, but not in the future. The power in the bound is expressed in terms of the maximal Lyapunov exponent on $γ$, and gives the minimal number of derivatives lost in exponential decay of solutions to the wave equation.
We consider the scattering problem for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a potential in two space dimensions. Appropriate resolvent estimates are proved and applied to estimate the operator $A(s)$ appearing in commutator relations. The equivalence between the operators $\left(-Δ_{V}\right)^{\frac{s}{2}}$ and $\left(-Δ\right)^{\frac{s}{2}}$ in $L^{2}$ norm sense for $0\leq s <1$ is investigated by using free resolvent estimates and Gaussian estimates for the heat kernel of the Schrödinger operator $-Δ_{V}$. Our main result guarantees the global existence of solutions and time decay of the…
The current paper is devoted to the scattering theory of a class of continuum Schrödinger operators with deterministic sparse potentials. We first establish the limiting absorption principle for both modified free resolvents and modified perturbed resolvents. This actually is a weak form of the classical limiting absorption principle. We then prove the existence and completeness of local wave operators, which, in particular, imply the existence of wave operators. Under additional assumptions on the sparse potential, we prove the completeness of wave operators. In the context of continuum Schrö…
We prove that the results in scattering theory that involve resonances are still valid for non-analytic potentials, even if the notion of resonance is not defined in this setting. More precisely, we show that if the potential of a semiclassical Schrödinger operator is supposed to be smooth and to decrease at infinity, the usual formulas relating scattering quantities and resonances still hold. The main ingredient for the proofs is a resolvent estimate of a new type, relating the resolvent of an operator with the resolvent of its cut-off counterpart.
We consider scattering by short range perturbations of the semi-classical Laplacian. We prove that when a polynomial bound on the resolvent holds, the scattering amplitude is a semi-classical Fourier integral operator associated to the scattering relation. Compared to previous work, we allow the scattering relation to have more general structure.
We prove in this paper resolvent estimates for the boundary values of resolvents of selfadjoint operators on a Krein space: if $H$ is a selfadjoint operator on a Krein space $\cH$, equipped with the Krein scalar product $\langle \cdot| \cdot \rangle$, $A$ is the generator of a $C_{0}-$group on $\cH$ and $I\subset \rr$ is an interval such that: \begin{itemize} \item[]1) $H$ admits a Borel functional calculus on $I$, \item[]2) the spectral projection $\one_{I}(H)$ is positive in the Krein sense, \item[]3) the following {\em positive commutator estimate} holds: \[ \Re \langle u| [H, ıA]u\rangle\g…
We consider resolvents of operators taking the form ${\bf A}=Γ_1{\bf B}Γ_1$ where $Γ_1({\bf k})$ is a projection that acts locally in Fourier space and ${\bf B}({\bf x})$ is an operator that acts locally in real space. Such resolvents arise naturally when one wants to solve any of the large class of linear physical equations surveyed in Parts I, II, III, and IV that can be reformulated as problems in the extended abstract theory of composites. We review how $Q^*$-convex operators can be used to bound the spectrum of ${\bf A}$. Then, based on the Cherkaev-Gibiansky transformation and subsequent…
Let $(M^\circ, g)$ be an asymptotically conic manifold, in the sense that $M^\circ$ compactifies to a manifold with boundary $M$ in such a way that $g$ becomes a scattering metric on $M$. A special case of particular interest is that of asymptotically Euclidean manifolds, where $\partial M = S^{n-1}$ and the induced metric at infinity is equal to the standard metric. We study the resolvent kernel $(P + k^2)^{-1}$ and Riesz transform of the operator $P = Δ_g + V$, where $Δ_g$ is the positive Laplacian associated to $g$ and $V$ is a real potential function $V$ that is smooth on $M$ and vanishes …
We study the spectral projection associated to a barrier-top resonance for the semiclassical Schrodinger operator. First, we prove a resolvent estimate for complex energies close to such a resonance. Using that estimate and an explicit representation of the resonant states, we show that the spectral projection has a semiclassical expansion in integer powers of h, and compute its leading term. We use this result to compute the residue of the scattering amplitude at such a resonance. Eventually, we give an expansion for large times of the Schrodinger group in terms of these resonances.
The Stokes equation on a domain $Ω\subset R^n$ is well understood in the $L^p$-setting for a large class of domains including bounded and exterior domains with smooth boundaries provided $1<p<\infty$. The situation is very different for the case $p=\infty$ since in this case the Helmholtz projection does not act as a bounded operator anymore. Nevertheless it was recently proved by the first and the second author of this paper by a contradiction argument that the Stokes operator generates an analytic semigroup on spaces of bounded functions for a large class of domains. This paper presents a ne…
In this note, we study existence of the outgoing/incoming resolvents of repulsive Schrödinger operators which may not be essentially self-adjoint on the Schwartz space. Moreover, we recover the classical result: The repulsive Schroödinger operators with large repulsive constant is not essentially self-adjoint on the Schwartz space.
We analyze the resolvent and define the scattering matrix for asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds with metrics which have a polyhomogeneous expansion near the boundary, and also prove that there is always an essential singularity of the resolvent in this setting. We use this analysis to prove an inverse result for conformally compact odd dimensional Einstein manifolds.
We address an interesting question raised by Dos Santos Ferreira, Kenig and Salo about regions ${\mathcal R}_g\subset {\mathbb C}$ for which there can be uniform $L^{\frac{2n}{n+2}}\to L^{\frac{2n}{n-2}}$ resolvent estimates for $Δ_g+ζ$, $ζ\in {\mathcal R}_g$, where $Δ_g$ is the Laplace-Beltrami operator with metric $g$ on a given compact boundaryless Riemannian manifold of dimension $n\ge3$. This is related to earlier work of Kenig, Ruiz and the third author for the Euclidean Laplacian, in which case the region is the entire complex plane minus any disc centered at the origin. Presently, we s…
We introduce a new iterative method to recover a real compact supported potential of the Schrödinger operator from their fixed angle scattering data. The method combines a fixed point argument with a suitable approximation of the resolvent of the Schrödinger operator by partial sums associated to its Born series. Convergence is established for potentials with small norm in certain Sobolev spaces. As an application we show some numerical experiments that illustrate this convergence.
We obtain rapidly convergent series expansions of resolvents of operators taking the form ${\bf A}=Γ_1{\bf B}Γ_1$ where $Γ_1({\bf k})$ is a projection that acts locally in Fourier space and ${\bf B}({\bf x})$ is an operator that acts locally in real space. Such resolvents arise naturally when one wants to solve any of the large class of linear physical equations surveyed in Parts I, II, III, and IV that can be reformulated as problems in the extended abstract theory of composites. We show how the information about the spectrum of ${\bf A}$ can be used to greatly improve the convergence rate.
In the setting of adjoint pairs of operators we consider the question: to what extent does the Weyl M-function see the same singularities as the resolvent of a certain restriction $A_B$ of the maximal operator? We obtain results showing that it is possible to describe explicitly certain spaces $\Sc$ and $\tilde{\Sc}$ such that the resolvent bordered by projections onto these subspaces is analytic everywhere that the M-function is analytic. We present three examples -- one involving a Hain-Lüst type operator, one involving a perturbed Friedrichs operator and one involving a simple ordinary diff…
We prove a resolvent estimate for the Laplace-Beltrami operator on a scattering manifold with a hyperbolic trapped set, and as a corollary deduce local smoothing. We use a result of Nonnenmacher-Zworski to provide an estimate near the trapped region, a result of Burq and Cardoso-Vodev to provide an estimate near infinity, and the microlocal calculus on scattering manifolds to combine the two.
We prove explicit semiclassical resolvent estimates for an integrable potential on the real line. The proof is a comparatively easy case of the spherical energies method, which has been used to prove similar theorems in higher dimensions and in more complicated geometric situations. The novelty in our results lies in the weakness of the assumptions on the potential.
In this paper the spectral properties of Dirac operators $A_η$ with electrostatic $δ$-shell interactions of constant strength $η$ supported on compact smooth surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^3$ are studied. Making use of boundary triple techniques a Krein type resolvent formula and a Birman-Schwinger principle are obtained. With the help of these tools some spectral, scattering, and asymptotic properties of $A_η$ are investigated. In particular, it turns out that the discrete spectrum of $A_η$ inside the gap of the essential spectrum is finite, the difference of the third powers of the resolvents of $A…
We consider the problem of finding the resonances of the Laplacian on truncated Riemannian cones. In a similar fashion to Cheeger--Taylor, we construct the resolvent and scattering matrix for the Laplacian on cones and truncated cones. Following Stefanov, we show that the resonances on the truncated cone are distributed asymptotically as Ar^n + o(r^n), where A is an explicit coefficient. We also conclude that the Laplacian on a non-truncated cone has no resonances away from zero.
The abstract theory of self-adjoint extensions of symmetric operators is used to construct self-adjoint realizations of a second-order elliptic operator on $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ with linear boundary conditions on (a relatively open part of) a compact hypersurface. Our approach allows to obtain Krein-like resolvent formulas where the reference operator coincides with the "free" operator with domain $H^{2}(\mathbb{R}^{n})$; this provides an useful tool for the scattering problem from a hypersurface. Concrete examples of this construction are developed in connection with the standard boundary conditio…
Let $M^\circ$ be a complete noncompact manifold and $g$ an asymptotically conic Riemaniann metric on $M^\circ$, in the sense that $M^\circ$ compactifies to a manifold with boundary $M$ in such a way that $g$ becomes a scattering metric on $M$. Let $Δ$ be the positive Laplacian associated to $g$, and $P = Δ+ V$, where $V$ is a potential function obeying certain conditions. We analyze the asymptotics of the spectral measure $dE(λ) = (λ/πi) \big(R(λ+i0) - R(λ- i0) \big)$ of $P_+^{1/2}$, where $R(λ) = (P - λ^2)^{-1}$, as $λ\to 0$, in a manner similar to that done previously by the second author an…
We provide a limiting absorption principle for the self-adjoint realizations of Laplace operators corresponding to boundary conditions on (relatively open parts $Σ$ of) compact hypersurfaces $Γ=\partialΩ$, $Ω\subset{\mathbb{R}}^{n}$. For any of such self-adjoint operators we also provide the generalized eigenfunctions and the scattering matrix; both these objects are written in terms of operator-valued Weyl functions. We make use of a Krein-type formula which provides the resolvent difference between the operator corresponding to self-adjoint boundary conditions on the hypersurface and the fre…
