We prove $L^p$ bounds in the range $1<p<\infty$ for a maximal dyadic sum operator on $\rn$. This maximal operator provides a discrete multidimensional model of Carleson's operator. Its boundedness is obtained by a simple twist of the proof of Carleson's theorem given by Lacey and Thiele, adapted in higher dimensions by Pramanik and Terwilleger. In dimension one, the $\lp$ boundedness of this maximal dyadic sum implies in particular an alternative proof of Hunt's extension of Carleson's theorem on almost everywhere convergence of Fourier integrals.
We define a generalized dyadic maximal operator involving the infinite product and discuss weighted inequalities for the operator. A formulation of the Carleson embedding theorem is proved. Our results depend heavily on a generalized Hölder's inequalities.
We provide lower $L^q$ and weak $L^p$-bounds for the localized dyadic maximal operator on $R^n$, when the local $L^1$ and the local $L^p$ norm of the function are given. We actually do that in the more general context of homo- geneous tree-like families in probability spaces.
We prove that the maximal functions associated with a Zygmund dilation dyadic structure in three-dimensional Euclidean space, and with the flag dyadic structure in two-dimensional Euclidean space, cannot be bounded by multiparameter sparse operators associated with the corresponding dyadic grid. We also obtain supplementary results about the absence of sparse domination for the strong dyadic maximal function.
We prove that for the dyadic maximal operator $\mathrm M$ and every locally integrable function $f\in L^1_{\mathrm{loc}}(\mathbb R^d)$ with bounded variation, also $\mathrm M f$ is locally integrable and $\mathop{\mathrm{var}}\mathrm M f\leq C_d\mathop{\mathrm{var}} f$ for any dimension $d\geq1$. It means that if $f\in L^1_{\mathrm{loc}}(\mathbb R^d)$ is a function whose gradient is a finite measure then so is $\nabla \mathrm M f$ and $\|\nabla \mathrm M f\|_{L^1(\mathbb R^d)}\leq C_d\|\nabla f\|_{L^1(\mathbb R^d)}$. We also prove this for the local dyadic maximal operator.
Lacey and Thiele have recently obtained a new proof of Carleson's theorem on almost everywhere convergence of Fourier series. This paper is a generalization of their techniques (known broadly as time-frequency analysis) to higher dimensions. In particular, a weak-type (2,2) estimate is derived for a maximal dyadic sum operator on R^n, n > 1. As an application one obtains a new proof of Sjölin's theorem on weak L^2 estimates for the maximal conjugated Calderón-Zygmund operator on R^n.
We consider L^p two weight inequalities for maximal truncations of dyadic Calderon-Zygmund operators. In the case of one weight being doubling, a characterization is given, and for the general case, sufficient conditions are given, including standard and non-standard testing conditions. The arguments of this paper parallel the authors prior work arXiv:0805.4711, but in this paper are much easier.
We give an alternative proof of a sharp generalization of an integral inequality for the dyadic maximal operator due to which the evaluation of the Bellman function of this operator with respect to two variables, is possible. This last mentioned inequality, which was first noticed in [3],also generalizes in a certain direction the results of [7].
The convex body maximal operator is a natural generalisation of the Hardy Littlewood maximal operator. In the presence of a matrix weight it is not bounded.
Let $S$ be the Lie group $\mathrm{R}^n\ltimes \mathrm{R}^+$ endowed with the left-invariant Riemannian symmetric space structure and the right Haar measure $ρ$, which is a Lie group of exponential growth. Hebisch and Steger in [Math. Z. 245(2003), 37--61] proved that any integrable function on $(S,ρ)$ admits a Calderón--Zygmund decomposition which involves a particular family of sets, called Calderón--Zygmund sets. In this paper, we first show the existence of a dyadic grid in the group $S$, which has {nice} properties similar to the classical Euclidean dyadic cubes. Using the properties of th…
We obtain the explicit upper Bellman function for the natural dyadic maximal operator acting from ${\rm BMO}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ into ${\rm BLO}(\mathbb{R}^n).$ As a consequence, we show that the ${\rm BMO}\to{\rm BLO}$ norm of the natural operator equals 1 for all $n,$ and so does the norm of the classical dyadic maximal operator. The main result is a partial corollary of a theorem for the so-called $α$-trees, which generalize dyadic lattices. The Bellman function in this setting exhibits an interesting quasi-periodic structure depending on $α,$ but also allows a majorant independent of $α,$ hence…
In the dyadic case the union of the Reverse Hölder classes, $RH_p^d$ is strictly larger than the union of the Muckenhoupt classes $ A_p^d$. We introduce the $RH_1^d$ condition as a limiting case of the $RH_p^d$ inequalities as $p$ tends to 1 and show the sharp bound on $RH_1^d$ constant of the weight $w$ in terms of its $A_\infty^d$ constant. We also take a look at the summation conditions of the Buckley type for the dyadic Reverse Hölder and Muckenhoupt weights and deduce them from an intrinsic lemma which gives a summation representation of the bumped average of a weight. Our lemmata also al…
We prove the $L^p$ boundedness of a maximal operator associated with a dyadic frequency decomposition of a Fourier multiplier, under a weak regularity assumption.
In this note, we do the following: a) By using Lacey's recent technique, we give an alternative proof for Conde-Alonso and Rey's domination theorem, which states that each positive dyadic operator of arbitrary complexity is pointwise dominated by a positive dyadic operator of zero complexity: \[ \sum_{S\in\mathcal{S}} \langle f \rangle^μ_{S^{(k)}} 1_S\lesssim (k+1) \sum_{S'\in\mathcal{S}'} \langle f \rangle^μ_{S'} 1_{S'}. \] b) By following the analogue between median and mean oscillation, we extend Lerner's local median oscillation decomposition to arbitrary (possibly non-doubling) measures: …
We give a quantitative characterization of the pairs of weights $(w,v)$ for which the dyadic version of the one-sided Hardy-Littlewood maximal operator satisfies a restricted weak $(p,p)$ type inequality, for $1\leq p<\infty$. More precisely, given any measurable set $E_0$ the estimate \[w(\{x\in \mathbb{R}^n: M^{+,d}(\mathcal{X}_{E_0})(x)>t\})\leq \frac{C[(w,v)]_{A_p^{+,d}(\mathcal{R})}^p}{t^p}v(E_0)\] holds if and only if the pair $(w,v)$ belongs to $A_p^{+,d}(\mathcal{R})$, that is \[\frac{|E|}{|Q|}\leq [(w,v)]_{A_p^{+,d}(\mathcal{R})}\left(\frac{v(E)}{w(Q)}\right)^{1/p}\] for every dyadic …
We study the problem of dominating the dyadic strong maximal function by $(1, 1)$-type sparse forms based on rectangles with sides parallel to the axes, and show that such domination is impossible. Our proof relies on an explicit construction of a pair of maximally separated point sets with respect to an appropriately defined notion of distance
Let $\mathcal M$ be the uncentered Hardy-Littlewood maximal operator or the dyadic maximal operator and $d\geq1$. We prove that for a set $E\subset\mathbb R^d$ of finite perimeter the bound $\operatorname{var}\mathcal M1_E\leq C_d\operatorname{var}1_E$ holds. We also prove this for the local maximal operator.
We demonstrate and develop dyadic-probabilistic methods in connection with non-homogeneous bilinear operators, namely singular integrals and square functions. We develop the full non-homogeneous theory of bilinear singular integrals using a modern point of view. The main result is a new global $Tb$ theorem for Calderón-Zygmund operators in this setting. Our main tools include maximal truncations, adapted Cotlar type inequalities and suppression and big piece methods. While proving our bilinear results we also advance and refine the linear theory of Calderón-Zygmund operators by improving techn…
Let $σ$ and $ω$ be locally finite Borel measures on $\mathbb{R}^d$, and let $p\in(1,\infty)$ and $q\in(0,\infty)$. We study the two-weight norm inequality $$ \lVert T(fσ) \rVert_{L^q(ω)}\leq C \lVert f \rVert_{L^p(σ)}, \quad \text{for all} \, \, f \in L^p(σ), $$ for both the positive summation operators $T=T_λ(\cdot σ)$ and positive maximal operators $T=M_λ(\cdot σ)$. Here, for a family $\{λ_Q\}$ of non-negative reals indexed by the dyadic cubes $Q$, these operators are defined by $$ T_λ(fσ):=\sum_Q λ_Q \langle f\rangle^σ_Q 1_Q \quad\text{ and } \quad M_λ(fσ):=\sup_Q λ_Q \langle f\rangle^σ_Q 1…
Given a general dyadic grid ${\mathscr{D}}$ and a sparse family of cubes ${\mathcal S}=\{Q_j^k\}\in {\mathscr{D}}$, define a dyadic positive operator ${\mathcal A}_{\mathscr{D},{\mathcal S}}$ by $${\mathcal A}_{\mathscr{D},{\mathcal S}}f(x)=\sum_{j,k}f_{Q_j^k}χ_{Q_j^k}(x).$$ Given a Banach function space $X({\mathbb R}^n)$ and the maximal Calderón-Zygmund operator $T_{\natural}$, we show that $$\|T_{\natural}f\|_X\le c(n,T)\sup_{\mathscr{D},{\mathcal S}}\|{\mathcal A}_{\mathscr{D},{\mathcal S}}f\|_{X}.$$ This result is applied to weighted inequalities. In particular, it implies: (i) the "two-w…
C. Stockdale, P. Villarroya, and B. Wick introduced the $ε$-maximal operator to prove the Haar multiplier is bounded on the weighted spaces $L^p(w)$ for a class of weights larger than $A_p$. We prove the $ε$-maximal operator and Haar multiplier are bounded on variable Lebesgue spaces $\Lpp(\R^n)$ for a larger collection of exponent functions than the log-Holder continuous functions used to prove the boundedness of the maximal operator on $\Lpp(\R^n)$. We also prove that the Haar multiplier is compact when restricted to a dyadic cube $Q_0$.
The thesis comprises three chapters. Chapter 1 investigates generalizations of the theorem of Fatou for convolution type integral operators with general approximate identities. It is introduced $λ(r)$-convergence, which is a generalization of non-tangential convergence in the unit disc. The connections between general approximate identities and optimal convergence regions for such operators are described in different functional spaces. Chapter 2 studies some generalizations of the theorem of Littlewood, which makes an important complement to the theorem of Fatou, constructing analytic function…
We represent a general bilinear Calderón-Zygmund operator as a sum of simple dyadic operators. The appearing dyadic operators also admit a simple proof of a sparse bound. In particular, the representation implies a so called sparse T1 theorem for bilinear singular integrals.
In this paper, the multilinear fractional strong maximal operator $\mathcal{M}_{\mathcal{R},α}$ associated with rectangles and corresponding multiple weights $A_{(\vec{p},q),\mathcal{R}}$ are introduced. Under the dyadic reverse doubling condition, a necessary and sufficient condition for two-weight inequalities is given. As consequences, we first obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for one-weight inequalities. Then, we give a new proof for the weighted estimates of multilinear fractional maximal operator $\mathcal{M}_α$ associated with cubes and multilinear fractional integral operato…
Let M denote the dyadic Maximal Function. We show that there is a weight w, and Haar multiplier T for which the following weak-type inequality fails: $$ \sup_{t>0}t w\left\{x\in\mathbb R \mid |Tf(x)|>t\right\}\le C \int_{\mathbb R}|f|Mw(x)dx. $$ (With T replaced by M, this is a well-known fact.) This shows that a dyadic version of the so-called Muckenhoupt-Wheeden Conjecture is false. This accomplished by using current techniques in weighted inequalities to show that a particular $L^2$ consequence of the inequality above does not hold.
Let $0<α<d$ and $1\leq p<d/α$. We present a proof that for all $f\in W^{1,p}(\mathbb{R}^d)$ both the centered and the uncentered Hardy-Littlewood fractional maximal operator $\mathcal M_αf$ are weakly differentiable and $ \|\nabla\mathcal M_αf\|_{p^*} \leq C_{d,α,p} \|\nabla f\|_p , $ where $ p^* = (p^{-1}-α/d)^{-1} . $ In particular it covers the endpoint case $p=1$ for $0<α<1$ where the bound was previously unknown. For $p=1$ we can replace $W^{1,1}(\mathbb{R}^d)$ by $\mathrm{BV}(\mathbb{R}^d)$. The ingredients used are a pointwise estimate for the gradient of the fractional maximal function…
In this paper we prove some sharp weighted norm inequalities for the multi(sub)linear maximal function $\Mm$ introduced in \cite{LOPTT} and for multilinear Calderón-Zygmund operators. In particular we obtain a sharp mixed "$A_p-A_{\infty}$" bound for $\Mm$, some partial results related to a Buckley-type estimate for $\Mm$, and a sufficient condition for the boundedness of $\Mm$ between weighted $L^p$ spaces with different weights taking into account the precise bounds. Next we get a bound for multilinear Calderón-Zygmund operators in terms of dyadic positive multilinear operators in the spirit…
Evaluation of the Bellman functions is a difficult task. The exact Bellman functions of the dyadic Carleson Embedding Theorem 1.1 and the dyadic maximal operators are obtained in [3] and [4]. Actually, the same Bellman functions also work for the tree-like structure. In this paper, we give a self-complete proof of the coincidence of the Bellman functions on the more general infinitely refining filtered probability space, see Definition 1.3. The proof depends on a remodeling of the Bellman function of the dyadic Carleson Embedding Theorem.
We characterize the $L^p(σ)\to L^q(ω)$ boundedness of positive dyadic operators of the form $ T(fσ)=\sum_{Q\in\mathscr{D}}λ_Q\int_Q f\,\mathrm{d}σ\cdot 1_Q, $ and the $L^{p_1}(σ_1)\times L^{p_2}(σ_2)\to L^q(ω)$ boundedness of their bilinear analogues, for arbitrary locally finite measures $σ,σ_1,σ_2,ω$. In the linear case, we unify the existing "Sawyer testing" (for $p\leq q$) and "Wolff potential" (for $p>q$) characterizations into a new "sequential testing" characterization valid in all cases. We extend these ideas to the bilinear case, obtaining both sequential testing and potential type ch…
Let $S$ be the dyadic bi-parameter square function $$Sf(x)^{2} = \sum_{R \in \mathcal{D}} |\langle f, h_{R} \rangle|^{2} \frac{1_{R}(x)}{|R|}.$$ We prove that if $T$ is a bi-parameter martingale transform and $f,g$ are suitable test functions, then there exists a sparse collection of rectangles $\mathcal{S}$ such that $$|\langle Tf, g \rangle| \lesssim \sum_{R \in \mathcal{S}} |R|(Sf)_{R}(Sg)_{R}.$$ We also extend this estimate to the case where $T$ is a bi-parameter cancellative dyadic shift and when $T$ is a paraproduct-free singular integral of Journé type. Weighted estimates follow from th…
Given a space of homogeneous type we give sufficient conditions on a variable exponent {p(.)} so that the fractional maximal operator {M_η} maps {L^{p(.)}(X)} to {L^{q(.)}(X)}, where {1/p(.) - 1/q(.) = η}. In the endpoint case we also prove the corresponding weak type inequality. As an application we prove norm inequalities for the fractional integral operator {I_η}. Our proof for the fractional maximal operator uses the theory of dyadic cubes on spaces of homogeneous type, and even in the Euclidean setting it is simpler than existing proofs. For the fractional integral operator we extend a po…
Let $σ$, $ω$ be measures on $\mathbb{R}^d$, and let $\{λ_Q\}_{Q\in\mathcal{D}}$ be a family of non-negative reals indexed by the collection $\mathcal{D}$ of dyadic cubes in $\mathbb{R}^d$. We characterize the two-weight norm inequality, \begin{equation*} \lVert T_λ(fσ)\rVert_{L^q(ω)}\le C \, \lVert f \rVert_{L^p(σ)}\quad \text{for every $f\in L^p(σ)$,} \end{equation*} for the positive dyadic operator \begin{equation*} T_λ(fσ):= \sum_{Q\in \mathcal{D}} λ_Q \, \Big(\frac{1}{σ(Q)} \int_Q f\mathrm{d}σ\Big) \, 1_Q \end{equation*} in the difficult range $0<q<1 \le p<\infty$ of integrability exponent…
The John-Nirenberg theorem states that functions of bounded mean oscillation are exponentially integrable. In this article we give two extensions of this theorem. The first one relates the dyadic maximal function to the sharp maximal function of Fefferman-Stein, while the second one concerns local weighted mean oscillations, generalizing a result of Muckenhoupt and Wheeden. Applications to the context of generalized Poincaré type inequalities and to the context of the $C_p$ class of weights are given. Extensions to the case of polynomial BMO type spaces are also given.
In the context of radial weights we study the dimension dependence of some weighted inequalities for maximal operators. We study the growth of the $A_1$-constants for radial weights and show the equivalence between the uniform boundedness of these constants, a dimension-free weak $L^1$ estimate for the maximal operator on annuli and the condition on the weight to be decreasing and essentially constant over dyadic annuli. Each one of these conditions is shown to provide dimension-free weighted weak type $L^1$ estimates for the centred maximal Hardy-Littlewood operator acting on radial functions…
We show using the Beylkin-Coifman-Rokhlin algorithm in the Haar basis that any singular integral operator can be written as the sum of a bounded operator on $L^p$, $1<p<\infty$, and of a perfect dyadic singular integral operator. This allows to deduce a local $T(b)$ theorem for singular integral operators from the one for perfect dyadic singular integral operators obtained by Hofmann, Muscalu, Thiele, Tao and the first author.
For a general Calderon-Zygmund operator $T$ on $R^N$, it is shown that $\|Tf\|_{L^2(w)}\leq C(T)\|w\|_{A_2}\|f\|_{L^2(w)}$ for all Muckenhoupt weights $w\in A_2$. This optimal estimate was known as the $A_2$ conjecture. A recent result of Perez-Treil-Volberg reduced the problem to a testing condition on indicator functions, which is verified in this paper. The proof consists of the following elements: (i) a variant of the Nazarov-Treil-Volberg method of random dyadic systems with just one random system and completely without bad parts; (ii) a resulting representation of a general Calderon-Zygm…
We characterize two-weight norm inequalities for potential type integral operators in terms of Sawyer-type testing conditions. Our result is stated in a space of homogeneous type with no additional geometric assumptions, such as group structure or non-empty annulus property, which appeared in earlier works on the subject. One of the new ingredients in the proof is the use of a finite collection of adjacent dyadic systems recently constructed by the author and T. Hytönen. We further extend the previous Euclidean characterization of two-weight norm inequalities for fractional maximal functions i…
We study trace inequalities of the type $$ \| T_k f\|_{L^q(dμ)}\leq C \|f\|_{L^p(dσ)}, \qquad f \in L^p(dσ), $$ in the ``upper triangle case'' $1 \leq q<p$ for integral operators $T_k$ with positive kernels, where $dσ$ and $dμ$ are positive Borel measures on $\R^n$. Our main tool is a generalization of Th. Wolff's inequality which gives two-sided estimates of the energy ${\mathcal E}_{k, σ} [μ]=\int_{\R^n} (T_k [μ])^{p'} d σ$ through the $L^1(dμ)$-norm of an appropriate nonlinear potential $W_{k, σ}[μ]$ associated with the kernel $k$ and measures $dμ$, $d σ$. We initially work with a dyadic in…
We give a new proof of the sharp one weight $L^p$ inequality for any operator $T$ that can be approximated by Haar shift operators such as the Hilbert transform, any Riesz transform, the Beurling-Ahlfors operator. Our proof avoids the Bellman function technique and two weight norm inequalities. We use instead a recent result due to A. Lerner to estimate the oscillation of dyadic operators. Our method is flexible enough to prove the corresponding sharp one-weight norm inequalities for some operators of harmonic analysis: the maximal singular integrals associated to $T$, Dyadic square functions …
We characterize strong type and weak type inequalities with two weights for positive operators on filtered measure spaces. These estimates are probabilistic analogues of two-weight inequalities for positive operators associated to the dyadic cubes in $\mathbb R^n$ due to Lacey, Sawyer and Uriarte-Tuero \cite{LaSaUr}. Several mixed bounds for the Doob maximal operator on filtered measure spaces are also obtained. In fact, Hytönen-Pérez type and Lerner-Moen type norm estimates for Doob maximal operator are established. Our approaches are mainly based on the construction of principal sets.
We obtain a sharp $L^2\times L^2 \to L^1$ boundedness criterion for a class of bilinear operators associated with a multiplier given by a signed sum of dyadic dilations of a given function, in terms of the $L^q$ integrability of this function; precisely we show that boundedness holds if and only if $q<4$. We discuss applications of this result concerning bilinear rough singular integrals and bilinear dyadic spherical maximal functions. Our second result is an optimal $L^2\times L^2\to L^1$ boundedness criterion for bilinear operators associated with multipliers with $L^\infty$ derivatives. Thi…
We obtain the off-diagonal Muckenhoupt-Wheeden conjecture for Calderón-Zygmund operators. Namely, given $1<p<q<\infty$ and a pair of weights $(u,v)$, if the Hardy-Littlewood maximal function satisfies the following two weight inequalities: $$ M : L^p(v) \rightarrow L^q(u) \quad \text{and} \quad M: L^{q'}(u^{1-q'}) \rightarrow L^{p'}(v^{1-p'}), $$ then any Calderón-Zygmund operator $T$ and its associated truncated maximal operator $T_\star$ are bounded from $L^p(v)$ to $L^q(u)$. Additionally, assuming only the second estimate for $M$ then $T$ and $T_\star$ map continuously $L^p(v)$ into $L^{q,\…
Let $\mathbf{A}=\{A_i\}_{i=1}^{\infty}$ be a sequence of sets with each $A_i$ being a non-empty collection of $0$-$1$ sequences of length $i$. For $x\in [0,1)$, the maximal run-length function $\ell_n(x,\mathbf{A})$ (with respect to $\mathbf{A}$) is defined to the largest $k$ such that in the first $n$ digits of the dyadic expansion of $x$ there is a consecutive subsequence contained in $A_k$. Suppose that $\lim_{n\to\infty}(\log_2|A_n|)/n=τ$ for some $τ\in [0,1]$ and one additional assumption holds, we prove a generalization of the Erdős-Rényi limit theorem which states that \[\lim_{n\to\inft…
