The thesis comprises three chapters.
Chapter 1 investigates generalizations of the theorem of Fatou for convolution type integral operators with general approximate identities. It is introduced $λ(r)$-convergence, which is a generalization of non-tangential convergence in the unit disc. The connections between general approximate identities and optimal convergence regions for such operators are described in different functional spaces.
Chapter 2 studies some generalizations of the theorem of Littlewood, which makes an important complement to the theorem of Fatou, constructing analytic function possessing almost everywhere divergent property along a given tangential curve. The same convolution type integral operators are considered with more general kernels than approximate identities. Two kinds of generalizations of the theorem of Littlewood are obtained, possessing everywhere divergent property.
Chapter 3 is devoted to some questions of equivalency of differentiation bases in $\mathbb{R}^n$. The complete equivalence of basis of rare dyadic rectangles and the basis of complete dyadic rectangles in $\mathbb{R}^2$ is investigated. Besides, it is introduced quasi-equivalence between two differentiation bases in $\mathbb{R}^n$ and is considered the set of functions that such bases differentiate.
We study, in $L^{1}(\R^n;γ)$ with respect to the gaussian measure, non-tangential maximal functions and conical square functions associated with the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck operator by developing a set of techniques which allow us, to some extent, to compensate for the non-doubling character of the gaussian measure. The main result asserts that conical square functions can be controlled in $L^1$-norm by non-tangential maximal functions. Along the way we prove a change of aperture result for the latter. This complements recent results on gaussian Hardy spaces due to Mauceri and Meda.
We consider divergence form elliptic operators L = - div A(x)\nabla, defined in the half space R^{n+1}_+, n \geq 2, where the coefficient matrix A(x) is bounded, measurable, uniformly elliptic, t-independent, and not necessarily symmetric. We establish square function/non-tangential maximal function estimates for solutions of the homogeneous equation Lu = 0, and we then combine these estimates with the method of "ε-approximability" to show that L-harmonic measure is absolutely continuous with respect to surface measure (i.e., n-dimensional Lebesgue measure) on the boundary, in a scale-invarian…
The goal of this note is to establish non-tangential convergence results for Schrödinger operators along restricted curves. We consider the relationship between the dimension of this kind of approach region and the regularity for the initial data which implies convergence. As a consequence, we obtain a upper bound for $p$ such that the Schrödinger maximal function is bounded from $H^{s}(\mathbb{R}^{n})$ to $L^{p}(\mathbb{R}^{n})$ for any $s > \frac{n}{2(n+1)}$.
Let $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$, $n\ge 2$, be a 1-sided non-tangentially accessible domain (aka uniform domain), that is, $Ω$ satisfies the interior Corkscrew and Harnack chain conditions, which are respectively scale-invariant/quantitative versions of openness and path-connectedness. Let us assume also that $Ω$ satisfies the so-called capacity density condition, a quantitative version of the fact that all boundary points are Wiener regular. Consider $L_0 u=-\mathrm{div}(A_0\nabla u)$, $Lu=-\mathrm{div}(A\nabla u)$, two real (non-necessarily symmetric) uniformly elliptic operators in $Ω$, and w…
In the first part of this paper we establish, in terms of so called k-tangential sets, a kind of optimal estimate for the size and structure of the set of non-differentiability of Lipshitz functions with one-sided directional derivatives. These results can be applied to many important special functions in analysis, like distance functions or different maximal functions. In the second part, having the results from the first part in our use, we focus more carefully on the differentiability properties of the classical Hardy-Littlewood maximal function. For example, we will show that if f is conti…
The purpose of this note is to provide a summary of the recent work of the authors on two variations of the pointwise convergence problem for the solutions to the fractional Schrödinger equations; convergence along a tangential line and along a set of lines, as exhibiting some new results in each setting. For the former case, we make a simple observation on a path along a tangential curve of exponential order. We discuss counterexamples for the latter case that show some of the known smooth regularities are essentially optimal.
As a tool for solving the Neumann problem for divergence form equations, Kenig and Pipher introduced the space X of functions on the half space, such that the non-tangential maximal function of their L_2-Whitney averages belongs to L_2 on the boundary. In this paper, answering questions which arose from recent studies of boundary value problems by Auscher and the second author, we find the pre-dual of X, and characterize the pointwise multipliers from X to L_2 on the half space as the well-known Carleson-type space of functions introduced by Dahlberg. We also extend these results to L_p genera…
In this paper, we consider convergence properties for generalized Schrödinger operators along tangential curves in $\mathbb{R}^{n} \times \mathbb{R}$ with less smoothness comparing with Lipschitz condition. Firstly, we obtain sharp convergence rate for generalized Schrödinger operators with polynomial growth along tangential curves in $\mathbb{R}^{n} \times \mathbb{R}$, $n \ge 1$. Secondly, it was open until now on pointwise convergence of solutions to the Schrödinger equation along non-$C^1$ curves in $\mathbb{R}^{n} \times \mathbb{R}$, $n\geq 2$, we obtain the corresponding results along som…
We establish general weighted $L^2$ inequalities for pseudodifferential operators associated to the Hörmander symbol classes $S^m_{ρ,δ}$. Such inequalities allow to control these operators by fractional "non-tangential" maximal functions, and subsume the optimal range of Lebesgue space bounds for pseudodifferential operators. As a corollary, several known Muckenhoupt type bounds are recovered, and new bounds for weights lying in the intersection of the Muckenhoupt and reverse Hölder classes are obtained. The proof relies on a subdyadic decomposition of the frequency space, together with applic…
We control a broad class of singular (or "rough") Fourier multipliers by geometrically-defined maximal operators via general weighted $L^2(\mathbb{R})$ norm inequalities. The multipliers involved are related to those of Coifman--Rubio de Francia--Semmes, satisfying certain weak Marcinkiewicz-type conditions that permit highly oscillatory factors of the form $e^{i|ξ|^α}$ for both $α$ positive and negative. The maximal functions that arise are of some independent interest, involving fractional averages associated with tangential approach regions (related to those of Nagel and Stein), and more no…
We prove the $L^p$ boundedness of a maximal operator associated with a dyadic frequency decomposition of a Fourier multiplier, under a weak regularity assumption.
Given a Muckenhoupt weight $w$ and a second order divergence form elliptic operator $L$, we consider different versions of the weighted Hardy space $H^1_L(w)$ defined by conical square functions and non-tangential maximal functions associated with the heat and Poisson semigroups generated by $L$. We show that all of them are isomorphic and also that $H^1_L(w)$ admits a molecular characterization. One of the advantages of our methods is that our assumptions extend naturally the unweighted theory developed by S. Hofmann and S. Mayboroda and we can immediately recover the unweighted case. Some of…
Let $\mathcal{X}$ be a metric space with doubling measure and $L$ a non-negative self-adjoint operator on $L^2(\mathcal{X})$ whose heat kernels satisfy the Gaussian upper bound estimates. Assume that the growth function $φ:\ \mathcal{X}\times[0,\infty) \to[0,\infty)$ satisfies that $φ(x,\cdot)$ is an Orlicz function and $φ(\cdot,t)\in {\mathbb A}_{\infty}(\mathcal{X})$ (the class of uniformly Muckenhoupt weights). Let $H_{φ,\,L}(\mathcal{X})$ be the Musielak-Orlicz-Hardy space defined via the Lusin area function associated with the heat semigroup of $L$. In this article, the authors characteri…
We study the bilinear Hilbert transform and bilinear maximal functions associated to polynomial curves and obtain uniform $L^r$ estimates for $r>\frac{d-1}{d}$ and this index is sharp up to the end point.
We develop new solvability methods for divergence form second order, real and complex, elliptic systems above Lipschitz graphs, with $L_2$ boundary data. The coefficients $A$ may depend on all variables, but are assumed to be close to coefficients $A_0$ that are independent of the coordinate transversal to the boundary, in the Carleson sense $\|A-A_0\|_C$ defined by Dahlberg. We obtain a number of {\em a priori} estimates and boundary behaviour results under finiteness of $\|A-A_0\|_C$. Our methods yield full characterization of weak solutions, whose gradients have $L_2$ estimates of a non-tan…
We study $L^{p}\times L^{q}\rightarrow L^{r}$-boundedness of (sub)bilinear maximal functions associated with degenerate hypersurfaces. First, we obtain the maximal bound on the sharp range of exponents $p,q,r$ (except some border line cases) for the bilinear maximal functions given by the model surface $\big\{(y,z)\in\mathbb{R}^{n}\times \mathbb{R}^{n}:|y|^{l_{1}}+|z|^{l_{2}}=1\big\}$, $(l_{1},l_{2})\in [1,\infty)^2$, $n\ge 2$. Our result manifests that nonvanishing Gaussian curvature is not good enough, in contrast with $L^p$-boundedness of the (sub)linear maximal operator associated to hyper…
We begin with an overview on square functions for spherical and Bochner-Riesz means which were introduced by Eli Stein, and discuss their implications for radial multipliers and associated maximal functions. We then prove new endpoint estimates for these square functions, for the maximal Bochner-Riesz operator, and for more general classes of radial Fourier multipliers.
In this paper, we introduce a criterion for maximal operators associated with Fourier multipliers to be bounded on $L^p(\mathbb{R}^d)$. Noteworthy examples satisfying the criterion are multipliers of the Mikhlin type or limited decay which are not necessarily radial. To do so, we make use of modified square function estimates and bilinear interpolation. In result, we obtain convergence results for fractional half-wave equations and surface averages as well as the $L^p$ boundedness for the maximal operators.
We provide quantitative weighted estimates for the $L^p(w)$ norm of a maximal operator associated to cube skeletons in $\mathbb{R}^n$. The method of proof differs from the usual in the area of weighted inequalities since there are no covering arguments suitable for the geometry of skeletons. We use instead a combinatorial strategy that allows to obtain, after a linearization and discretization, $L^p$ bounds for the maximal operator from an estimate related to intersections between skeletons and $k$-planes.
Let $L$ be a homogeneous divergence form higher order elliptic operator with complex bounded measurable coefficients and $(p_-(L),\, p_+(L))$ be the maximal interval of exponents $q\in[1,\,\infty]$ such that the semigroup $\{e^{-tL}\}_{t>0}$ is bounded on $L^q(\mathbb{R}^n)$. In this article, the authors establish the non-tangential maximal function characterizations of the associated Hardy spaces $H_L^p(\mathbb{R}^n)$ for all $p\in(0,\,p_+(L))$, which, when $p=1$, answers a question asked by Deng et al. in [J. Funct. Anal. 263 (2012), 604-674]. Moreover, the authors characterize $H_L^p(\mathb…
We study the boundedness problem for maximal operators $\mathcal{M}$ associated to averages along families of hypersurfaces $S$ of finite type in $\mathbb{R}^n.$ In this paper, we prove that if $S$ is a finite type hypersurface which is of finite type $k$ at $x_0 \in \mathbb{R}^n$, then the associated maximal operator is bounded on $L^p(\mathbb{R}^n)$ for $p>k.$ We shall also consider a variable coefficient version of maximal theorem and we obtain the same $L^p-$ boundedness result for $p>k.$ We also discuss the consequence of this result. In particular, we verify a conjecture by E. M. Stein a…
We consider the $L^p \rightarrow L^p$ boundedness of a Nikodym maximal function associated to a one-parameter family of tubes in $\mathbb{R}^{d+1}$ whose directions are determined by a non-degenerate curve $γ$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$. These operators arise in the analysis of maximal averages over space curves. The main theorem generalises the known results for $d = 2$ and $d = 3$ to general dimensions. The key ingredient is an induction scheme motivated by recent work of Ko--Lee--Oh.
A few years ago, Bourgain proved that the centered Hardy-Littlewood maximal function for the cube has dimension free $L^p$-bounds for $p>1$. We extend his result to products of Euclidean balls of different dimensions. In addition, we provide dimension free $L^p$-bounds for the maximal function associated to products of Euclidean spheres for $p > \frac{N}{N-1}$ and $N \ge 3$, where $N-1$ is the lowest occurring dimension of a single sphere. The aforementioned result is obtained from the latter one by applying the method of rotations from Stein's pioneering work on the spherical maximal function…
Results analogous to those proved by Rubio de Francia are obtained for a class of maximal functions formed by dilations of bilinear multiplier operators of limited decay. We focus our attention to $L^2\times L^2\to L^1$ estimates. We discuss two applications: the boundedness of the bilinear maximal Bochner-Riesz operator and of the bilinear spherical maximal operator. For the latter we improve the known results by reducing the dimension restriction from $n\ge 8$ to $n\ge 4$.
Variational and divergence symmetries are studied in this paper for linear equations of maximal symmetry in canonical form, and the associated first integrals are given in explicit form. All the main results obtained are formulated as theorems or conjectures for equations of a general order. Some of these results apply to linear equations of a general form and of arbitrary orders or having a symmetry algebra of arbitrary dimension.
Maximal angular operator sends a function defined in a sector of the complex plane to a Maximal angular operator sends a function defined in a sector of the complex plane with vertex at 0 to the function of modulus obtained by maximizing over argument. Compositions of the so defined maximal angular operator (in suitable sectors) with the Poisson, Stieltjes and Laplace transforms are shown to be bounded (nonlinear) operators from $L^p$ to $L^q$ for the same values of $p$ and $q$ as their standard counterparts.
In a recent article J. Aldaz proved that the weak L1 bounds for the centered maximal operator associated to finite radial measures cannot be taken independently with respect to the dimension. We show that at least for small p near to 1 the same result holds for the Lp bounds of such measures with decreasing densities. We also give some concrete examples, that include Gaussian measure, where better estimates with respect to the general case are obtained.
In this paper, the multilinear fractional strong maximal operator $\mathcal{M}_{\mathcal{R},α}$ associated with rectangles and corresponding multiple weights $A_{(\vec{p},q),\mathcal{R}}$ are introduced. Under the dyadic reverse doubling condition, a necessary and sufficient condition for two-weight inequalities is given. As consequences, we first obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for one-weight inequalities. Then, we give a new proof for the weighted estimates of multilinear fractional maximal operator $\mathcal{M}_α$ associated with cubes and multilinear fractional integral operato…
In this paper we deal with lacunary and full versions of the spherical maximal function on the Heisenberg group $\mathbb{H}^n$, for $n\ge 2$. By suitable adaptation of an approach developed by M. Lacey in the Euclidean case, we obtain sparse bounds for these maximal functions, which lead to new unweighted and weighted estimates. In particular, we deduce the $L^p$ boundedness, for $1<p<\infty$, of the lacunary maximal function associated to the spherical means on the Heisenberg group. In order to prove the sparse bounds, we establish $ L^p-L^q $ estimates for local (single scale) variants of th…
We give a simple necessary and sufficient condition for maximal operators associated with radial Fourier multipliers to be bounded on $L^p_{rad}$ and $L^p$ for certain $p$ greater than $2$. The range of exponents obtained for the $L^p_{rad}$ characterization is optimal for the given condition. The $L^p$ characterization is derived from an inequality of Heo, Nazarov, and Seeger regarding a characterization of radial Fourier multipliers.
Let $\mathcal{B}$ denote a nonempty translation invariant collection of intervals in $\mathbb{R}^n$ (which we regard as a rare basis), and define the associated geometric maximal operator $M_\mathcal{B}$ by $$M_\mathcal{B}f(x) = \sup_{x \in R \in \mathcal{B}} \frac{1}{|R|}\int_R |f|.$$ We provide a sufficient condition on $\mathcal{B}$ so that the estimate $$ |\{x \in \mathbb{R}^n : M_{\mathcal{B}}f(x) > α\}|\leq C_n \int_{\mathbb{R}^{n}} \frac{|f|}α\left(1+\log^+\frac{|f|}α\right)^{n-1} $$ is sharp. As a corollary we obtain sharp weak type estimates for maximal operators associated to several…
Let $M^{(u)}$, $H^{(u)}$ be the maximal operator and Hilbert transform along the parabola $(t, ut^2) $. For $U\subset(0,\infty)$ we consider $L^p$ estimates for the maximal functions $\sup_{u\in U}|M^{(u)} f|$ and $\sup_{u\in U}|H^{(u)} f|$, when $1<p\le 2$. The parabolae can be replaced by more general non-flat homogeneous curves.
In recent articles it was proved that when $μ$ is a finite, radial measure in $\real^n$ with a bounded, radially decreasing density, the $L^p(μ)$ norm of the associated maximal operator $M_μ$ grows to infinity with the dimension for a small range of values of $p$ near 1. We prove that when $μ$ is Lebesgue measure restricted to the unit ball and $p<2$, the $L^p$ operator norms of the maximal operator are unbounded in dimension, even when the action is restricted to radially decreasing functions. In spite of this, this maximal operator admits dimension-free $L^p$ bounds for every $p>2$, when res…
The goal of this article is to establish $L^{p} \rightarrow L^{q}$ estimates for maximal functions associated with nonisotropic dilations $δ_t(x)=(t^{a_1}x_1,t^{a_2}x_2,t^{a_3}x_3)$ of hypersurfaces $(x_{1}, x_{2},Φ(x_1,x_2))$ in $\mathbb{R}^3$, where the Gaussian curvatures of the hypersurfaces are allowed to vanish. When $2 α_{2} = α_{3}$, this problem is reduced to study of the $L^{p} \rightarrow L^{q}$ estimates for maximal functions along the curve $γ(x)=(x,x^2(1+ϕ(x)))$ and associated dilations $δ_t(x)=(tx_1,t^2x_2)$. The corresponding maximal function shows features related to the Bourg…
It is known that the improved Cotlar's inequality $B^{*}f(z) \le C M(Bf)(z)$, $z\in\mathbb C$, holds for the Beurling transform $B$, the maximal Beurling transform $B^{*}f(z)=$ $\displaystyle\sup_{\varepsilon >0}\left|\int_{|w|>\varepsilon}f(z-w) \frac{1}{w^2} \,dw\right|$, $z\in\mathbb C$, and the Hardy--Littlewood maximal operator $M$. In this note we consider the maximal Beurling transform associated with squares, namely, $B^{*}_Sf(z)=\displaystyle\sup_{\varepsilon >0}\left|\int_{w\notin Q(0,\varepsilon)}f(z-w) \frac{1}{w^2} \,dw \right|$, $z\in\mathbb C$, $Q(0,\varepsilon)$ being the squar…
In this work we obtain boundedness on weighted variable Lebesgue spaces of some maximal functions that come from the localized analysis considering a critical radius function. This analysis appears naturally in the context of the Schrödinger operator $\mathcal{L}=-Δ+V$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$, where $V$ a non-negative potential satisfying some specific reverse Hölder condition. We consider new classes of weights that locally behave as the Muckenhoupt class for Lebesgue spaces with variable exponents considered in Cruz Uribe et al. (J. Math. Anal. Appl. 394(2):744-760, 2012) and actually include them…

We prove that the maximal functions associated with a Zygmund dilation dyadic structure in three-dimensional Euclidean space, and with the flag dyadic structure in two-dimensional Euclidean space, cannot be bounded by multiparameter sparse operators associated with the corresponding dyadic grid. We also obtain supplementary results about the absence of sparse domination for the strong dyadic maximal function.
