The highest possible minimal norm of a unimodular lattice is determined in dimensions n <= 33. There are precisely five odd 32-dimensional lattices with the highest possible minimal norm (compared with more than 8*10^20 in dimension 33). Unimodular lattices with no roots exist if and only if n >= 23, n not = 25.
In this paper, new extremal odd unimodular lattices in dimension $36$ are constructed. Some new odd unimodular lattices in dimension $36$ with long shadows are also constructed.
It is shown that an n-dimensional unimodular lattice has minimal norm at most 2[n/24] +2, unless n = 23 when the bound must be increased by 1. This result was previously known only for even unimodular lattices. Quebbemann had extended the bound for even unimodular lattices to strongly N-modular even lattices for N in {1,2,3,5,6,7,11,14,15,23} ... (*), and analogous bounds are established here for odd lattices satisfying certain technical conditions (which are trivial for N = 1 and 2). For N > 1 in (*), lattices meeting the new bound are constructed that are analogous to the ``shorter'' and ``o…
For some extremal (optimal) odd unimodular lattice $L$ in dimensions $12,16,20,28,32,36,40$ and $44$, we determine all integers $k$ such that $L$ contains a $k$-frame. This result yields the existence of an extremal Type I $\mathbb{Z}_{k}$-code of lengths $12,16,20,32,36,40$ and $44$, and a near-extremal Type I $\mathbb{Z}_k$-code of length $28$ for positive integers $k$ with only a few exceptions.
It is shown that if there is an extremal even unimodular lattice in dimension 72, then there is an optimal odd unimodular lattice in that dimension. Hence, the first example of an optimal odd unimodular lattice in dimension 72 is constructed from the extremal even unimodular lattice which has been recently found by G. Nebe.
In this paper, we construct odd unimodular lattices in dimensions n=36,37 having minimum norm 3 and 4s=n-16, where s is the minimum norm of the shadow. We also construct odd unimodular lattices in dimensions n=41,43,44 having minimum norm 4 and 4s=n-24.
Conference matrices are used to define complex structures on real vector spaces. Certain lattices in these spaces become modules for rings of quadratic integers. Multiplication of these lattices by non-principal ideals yields simple constructions of further lattices including the Leech lattice.
Unimodular triangulations of lattice polytopes arise in algebraic geometry, commutative algebra, integer programming and, of course, combinatorics. In this article, we review several classes of polytopes that do have unimodular triangulations and constructions that preserve their existence. We include, in particular, the first effective proof of the classical result by Knudsen-Mumford-Waterman stating that every lattice polytope has a dilation that admits a unimodular triangulation. Our proof yields an explicit (although doubly exponential) bound for the dilation factor.
If $P$ is a lattice polytope (that is, the convex hull of a finite set of lattice points in $\mathbf{R}^n$), then every sum of $h$ lattice points in $P$ is a lattice point in the $h$-fold sumset $hP$. However, a lattice point in the $h$-fold sumset $hP$ is not necessarily the sum of $h$ lattice points in $P$. It is proved that if the polytope $P$ is a union of unimodular simplices, then every lattice point in the $h$-fold sumset $hP$ is the sum of $h$ lattice points in $P$.
An $s$-extremal optimal unimodular lattice in dimension $52$ is constructed for the first time. This lattice is constructed from a certain self-dual $\mathbb{F}_5$-code by Construction A. In addition, as neighbors of the lattice, two more $s$-extremal optimal unimodular lattices are constructed.
Let P be a d-dimensional lattice polytope. We show that there exists a natural number c_d, only depending on d, such that the multiples cP have a unimodular cover for every natural number c >= c_d. Actually, a subexponential upper bound for c_d is provided, together with an analogous result for unimodular covers of rational cones.

For some extremal (optimal) odd unimodular lattices L in dimensions n=12,16,20,32,36,40 and 44, we determine all positive integers k such that L contains a k-frame. This result yields the existence of an extremal Type I Zk-code of lengths 12,16,20,32,36,40 and 44 and a near-extremal Type I Zk-code of length 28 for positive integers k with only a few exceptions.
For each integer partition $\mathbf{q}$ with $d$ parts, we denote by $Δ_{(1,\mathbf{q})}$ the lattice simplex obtained as the convex hull in $\mathbb{R}^d$ of the standard basis vectors along with the vector $-\mathbf{q}$. For $\mathbf{q}$ with two distinct parts such that $Δ_{(1,\mathbf{q})}$ is reflexive and has the integer decomposition property, we establish a characterization of the lattice points contained in $Δ_{(1,\mathbf{q})}$. We then construct a Gröbner basis with a squarefree initial ideal of the toric ideal defined by these simplices. This establishes the existence of a regular un…
In this paper, binary extremal singly even self-dual codes of length 40 and extremal odd unimodular lattices in dimension 40 are studied. We give a classification of extremal singly even self-dual codes of length 40. We also give a classification of extremal odd unimodular lattices in dimension 40 with shadows having 80 vectors of norm 2 through their relationships with extremal doubly even self-dual codes of length 40.
The Birkhoff polytope, defined to be the convex hull of $n\times n$ permutation matrices, is a well studied polytope in the context of the Ehrhart theory. This polytope is known to have many desirable properties, such as the Gorenstein property and existence of regular, unimodular triangulations. In this paper, we study analogues of the Birkhoff polytope for finite irreducible Coxeter groups of other types. We focus on a type-$B$ Birkhoff polytope $\mathcal{BB}(n)$ arising from signed permutation matrices and prove that it and its dual polytope are reflexive, and hence Gorenstein, and also pos…
For lengths up to 47 except 37, we determine the largest minimum Euclidean weight among all Type I Z4-codes of that length. We also give the first example of an optimal odd unimodular lattice in dimension 41 explicitly, which is constructed from some Type I Z4-code of length 41.
New $s$-extremal extremal unimodular lattices in dimensions $38$, $40$, $42$ and $44$ are constructed from self-dual codes over $\mathbb{F}_5$ by Construction A. In the process of constructing these codes, we obtain a self-dual $[44,22,14]$ code over $\mathbb{F}_5$. In addition, the code implies a $[43,22,13]$ code over $\mathbb{F}_5$. These codes have larger minimum weights than the previously known $[44,22]$ codes and $[43,22]$ codes, respectively.
Some years ago, Borcherds described in [Bo1] two methods for constructing modular forms on modular varieties related to the orthogonal group $Ø(2,n)$. They are the so called Borcherds' additive and multiplicative lifting. The multiplicative lifting has been used by Borcherds himself and other authors to construct modular forms with known vanishing locus and interesting properties. The additive lifting has been used to construct explicit maps from some modular varieties $Ø(2,n)$. In this paper we try a more systematic treatment in certain level 2 cases giving connections with Kondo's works
Infinite hyperplane arrangements whose vertices form a lattice are studied from the point of view of commutative algebra. The quotient of such an arrangement modulo the lattice action represents the minimal free resolution of the associated binomial ideal, which defines a toric subvariety in a product of projective lines. Connections to graphic arrangements and to Beilinson's spectral sequence are explored.
We present a geometric approach towards derandomizing the Isolation Lemma by Mulmuley, Vazirani, and Vazirani. In particular, our approach produces a quasi-polynomial family of weights, where each weight is an integer and quasi-polynomially bounded, that can isolate a vertex in any 0/1 polytope for which each face lies in an affine space defined by a totally unimodular matrix. This includes the polytopes given by totally unimodular constraints and generalizes the recent derandomization of the Isolation Lemma for bipartite perfect matching and matroid intersection. We prove our result by associ…
We give an elementary proof of a formula expressing the rotation number of a cyclic unimodular sequence of lattice vectors in terms of arithmetically defined local quantities. The formula has been originally derived by A. Higashitani and M. Masuda (arXiv:1204.0088v2 [math.CO]) with the aid of the Riemann-Roch formula applied in the context of toric topology. They also demonstrated that a generalized versions of the "Twelve-point theorem" and a generalized Pick's formula are among the consequences or relatives of their result. Our approach emphasizes the role of 'discrete curvature invariants' …
We classify the unimodular equivalence classes of inclusion-minimal polygons with a certain fixed lattice width. As a corollary, we find a sharp upper bound on the number of lattice points of these minimal polygons.
We analyze marked poset polytopes and generalize a result due to Hibi and Li, answering whether the marked chain polytope is unimodular equivalent to the marked order polytope. Both polytopes appear naturally in the representation theory of semi-simple Lie algebras, and hence we can give a necessary and sufficient condition on the marked poset such that the associated toric degenerations of the corresponding partial flag variety are isomorphic. We further show that the set of lattice points in such a marked poset polytope is the Minkowski sum of sets of lattice points for 0-1 polytopes. Moreov…
A well known result by Lagarias and Ziegler states that there are finitely many equivalence classes of d-dimensional lattice polytopes having volume at most K, for fixed constants d and K. We describe an algorithm for the complete enumeration of such equivalence classes for arbitrary constants d and K. The algorithm, which gives another proof of the finiteness result, is implemented for small values of K, up to dimension six. The resulting database contains and extends several existing ones, and has been used to correct mistakes in other classifications. When specialized to three-dimensional s…

A frieze is an array of numbers obeying the unimodular rule. Coxeter showed that a frieze with integer entries corresponds to a triangulation. Recently, Holm and Jørgenson introduced friezes of type $Λ_p$ which correspond to $p$-angulations of a polygon. In this paper we explore the connection between these two types of friezes; in particular we show that the friezes of type $Λ_p$ for $p=4$ and $p=6$ contain integral friezes within them. We also consider the relationships with Farey graphs.
We extend the results of Bey, Hen, and Wills (http://arxiv.org/abs/math/0606089). In this paper, we show that, up to equivalence under unimodular transformations, there is exactly one class of $d$-simplices having $k \ge 1$ interior lattice points and minimal volume $\frac{1}{d!}(dk+1)$.
It has been shown by Soprunov that the normalized mixed volume (minus one) of an $n$-tuple of $n$-dimensional lattice polytopes is a lower bound for the number of interior lattice points in the Minkowski sum of the polytopes. He defined $n$-tuples of mixed degree at most one to be exactly those for which this lower bound is attained with equality, and posed the problem of a classification of such tuples. We give a finiteness result regarding this problem in general dimension $n \geq 4$, showing that all but finitely many $n$-tuples of mixed degree at most one admit a common lattice projection …
Consider a class of simplices defined by systems $A x \leq b$ of linear inequalities with $Δ$-modular matrices. A matrix is called $Δ$-modular, if all its rank-order sub-determinants are bounded by $Δ$ in an absolute value. In our work we call a simplex $Δ$-modular, if it can be defined by a system $A x \leq b$ with a $Δ$-modular matrix $A$. And we call a simplex empty, if it contains no points with integer coordinates. In literature, a simplex is called lattice-simplex, if all its vertices have integer coordinates. And a lattice-simplex called empty, if it contains no points with integer coor…
We show that: (1) unimodular simplices in a lattice 3-polytope cover a neighborhood of the boundary of the polytope if and only if the polytope is very ample, (2) the convex hull of lattice points in every ellipsoid in R^3 has a unimodular cover, and (3) for every d at least 5, there are ellipsoids in R^d, such that the convex hulls of the lattice points in these ellipsoids are not even normal. Part (3) answers a question of Bruns, Michalek, and the author.
There exist as many index-$k$ sublattices of the hexagonal lattice up to isometry as there exist lattice triangles with normalized volume $k$ up to unimodular equivalence, which can be explained using orbifolds. In dimension 3, it was noted that the number of sublattices of the fcc and the bcc lattices and the number of lattice tetrahedra all seem to be the same. We provide a bijection between the sublattices of the coweight lattice $A^*_n$ and the $n$-dimensional lattice simplices. It explains, proves, and generalizes the observed coincidences to arbitrary dimension.
In the present paper, we give Assmus--Mattson type theorems for codes and lattices. We show that a binary doubly even self-dual code of length 24m with minimum weight 4m provides a combinatorial 1-design and an even unimodular lattice of rank 24m with minimum norm 2m provides a spherical 3-design. We remark that some of such codes and lattices give t-designs for higher t. As a corollary, we give some restrictions on the weight enumerators of binary doubly even self-dual codes of length 24m with minimum weight 4m. Ternary and quaternary analogues are also given.
