In the present paper, we give Assmus--Mattson type theorems for codes and lattices. We show that a binary doubly even self-dual code of length 24m with minimum weight 4m provides a combinatorial 1-design and an even unimodular lattice of rank 24m with minimum norm 2m provides a spherical 3-design. We remark that some of such codes and lattices give t-designs for higher t. As a corollary, we give some restrictions on the weight enumerators of binary doubly even self-dual codes of length 24m with minimum weight 4m. Ternary and quaternary analogues are also given.
We previously proposed the first nontrivial examples of a code having support $t$-designs for all weights obtained from the Assmus-Mattson theorem and having support $t'$-designs for some weights with some $t'>t$. This suggests the possibility of generalizing the Assmus-Mattson theorem, which is very important in design and coding theory. In the present paper, we generalize this example as a strengthening of the Assmus-Mattson theorem along this direction. As a corollary, we provide a new characterization of the extended Golay code $\mathcal{G}_{24}$.
Let $C$ be a four-weight binary code, which has all one vector. Furthermore, we assume that $C$ supports $t$-designs for all weights obtained from the Assmus--Mattson theorem. We previously showed that $t\leq 5$. In the present paper, we show an analogue of this result in the cases of five and six-weight codes.
We use the Terwilliger algebra to provide a new approach to the Assmus-Mattson theorem. This approach also includes another proof of the minimum distance bound shown by Martin as well as its dual.
In the present paper, we give the Assmus--Mattson type theorem for near-extremal Type I and even formally self-dual codes. We show the existence of $1$-designs or $2$-designs for these codes. As a corollary, we prove the uniqueness of a self-orthogonal $2$-$(16,6,8)$ design.
We prove an Assmus-Mattson-type theorem for block codes where the alphabet is the vertex set of a commutative association scheme (say, with $s$ classes). This in particular generalizes the Assmus-Mattson-type theorems for $\mathbb{Z}_4$-linear codes due to Tanabe (2003) and Shin, Kumar, and Helleseth (2004), as well as the original theorem by Assmus and Mattson (1969). The weights of a code are $s$-tuples of non-negative integers in this case, and the conditions in our theorem for obtaining $t$-designs from the code involve concepts from polynomial interpolation in $s$ variables. The Terwillig…
A $t$-$(n,d,λ)$ design over ${\mathbb F}_q$, or a subspace design, is a collection of $d$-dimensional subspaces of ${\mathbb F}_q^n$, called blocks, with the property that every $t$-dimensional subspace of ${\mathbb F}_q^n$ is contained in the same number $λ$ of blocks. A collection of matrices in over ${\mathbb F}_q$ is said to hold a subspace design if the set of column spaces of its elements forms the blocks of a subspace design. We use notions of puncturing and shortening of rank metric codes and the rank-metric MacWilliams identities to establish conditions under which the words of a give…
The Assmus-Mattson theorem gives a way to identify block designs arising from codes. This result was broadened to matroids and weighted designs. In this work we present a further two-fold generalisation: first from matroids to polymatroids and also from sets to vector spaces. To achieve this, we introduce the characteristic polynomial of a $q$-polymatroid and outline several of its properties.
The codewords of weight $10$ of the $[42,21,10]$ extended binary quadratic residue code are shown to hold a design of parameters $3-(42,10,18).$ Its automorphism group is isomorphic to $PSL(2,41)$. Its existence can be explained neither by a transitivity argument, nor by the Assmus-Mattson theorem.
Bent functions, or equivalently, Hadamard difference sets in the elementary Abelian group $(\gf(2^{2m}), +)$, have been employed to construct symmetric and quasi-symmetric designs having the symmetric difference property. The main objective of this paper is to use bent vectorial functions for a construction of a two-parameter family of binary linear codes that do not satisfy the conditions of the Assmus-Mattson theorem, but nevertheless hold $2$-designs. A new coding-theoretic characterization of bent vectorial functions is presented.
We give a new structural development of harmonic polynomials on Hamming space, and harmonic weight enumerators of binary linear codes, that parallels one approach to harmonic polynomials on Euclidean space and weighted theta functions of Euclidean lattices. Namely, we use the finite-dimensional representation theory of sl_2 to derive a decomposition theorem for the spaces of discrete homogeneous polynomials in terms of the spaces of discrete harmonic polynomials, and prove a generalized MacWilliams identity for harmonic weight enumerators. We then present several applications of harmonic weigh…
We introduce the notion of a conformal design based on a vertex operator algebra. This notation is a natural analog of the notion of block designs or spherical designs when the elements of the design are based on self-orthogonal binary codes or integral lattices, respectively. It is shown that the subspaces of fixed degree of an extremal self-dual vertex operator algebra form conformal 11-, 7-, or 3-designs, generalizing similar results of Assmus-Mattson and Venkov for extremal doubly-even codes and extremal even lattices. Other examples are coming from group actions on vertex operator algebra…
By the Assmus and Mattson theorem, the codewords of each nontrivial weight in an extremal doubly even self-dual code of length 24m form a self-orthogonal 5-design. In this paper, we study the codes constructed from self-orthogonal 5-designs with the same parameters as the above 5-designs. We give some parameters of a self-orthogonal 5-design whose existence is equivalent to that of an extremal doubly even self-dual code of length 24m for m=3,...,6. If $m \in \{1,\ldots,6\}$, $k \in \{m+1,\ldots,5m-1\}$ and $(m,k) \ne (6,18)$, then it is shown that an extremal doubly even self-dual code of leng…
Coding theory and $t$-designs have close connections and interesting interplay. In this paper, we first introduce a class of ternary linear codes and study their parameters. We then focus on their three-weight subcodes with a special weight distribution. We determine the weight distributions of some shortened codes and punctured codes of these three-weight subcodes. These shortened and punctured codes contain some codes that have the same parameters as the best ternary linear codes known in the database maintained by Markus Grassl at http://www.codetables.de/. These three-weight subcodes with …
It has been observed by Assmus and Key as a result of the complete classification of Hadamard matrices of order 24, that the extremality of the binary code of a Hadamard matrix H of order 24 is equivalent to the extremality of the ternary code of H^T. In this note, we present two proofs of this fact, neither of which depends on the classification. One is a consequence of a more general result on the minimum weight of the dual of the code of a Hadamard matrix. The other relates the lattices obtained from the binary code and from the ternary code. Both proofs are presented in greater generality …
By a famous result of Doyen, Hubaut and Vandensavel \cite{DHV}, the 2-rank of a Steiner triple system on $2^n-1$ points is at least $2^n -1 -n$, and equality holds only for the classical point-line design in the projective geometry $PG(n-1,2)$. It follows from results of Assmus \cite{A} that, given any integer $t$ with $1 \leq t \leq n-1$, there is a code $C_{n,t}$ containing representatives of all isomorphism classes of STS$(2^n-1)$ with 2-rank at most $2^n -1 -n + t$. Using a mixture of coding theoretic, geometric, design theoretic and combinatorial arguments, we prove a general formula for …
