We study equivariant projective compactifications of reductive groups obtained by closing the image of a group in the space of operators of a projective representation. We describe the structure and the mutual position of their orbits under the action of the doubled group by left/right multiplications, the local structure in a neighborhood of a closed orbit, and obtain some conditions of normality and smoothness of a compactification. Our methods of research use the theory of equivariant embeddings of spherical homogeneous spaces and of reductive algebraic semigroups.
Let X be a locally symmetric variety. Let EBS(X) and TorE(X) denote its excentric Borel-Serre and excentric toroidal compactifications, resp. We determine their least common modification and use it to prove a conjecture of Goresky and Tai concerning canonical extensions of homogeneous vector bundles. In the process, we see that EBS(X) and TorE(X) are homotopy equivalent.
For a reductive group scheme over a regular semi-local ring, we prove an equivarinat version of the Gersten conjecture. We draw some interesting consequences for the representation rings of such reductive group schemes. We also prove the rigidity for the equivariant K-theory of reductive group schemes over a henselian local ring. This is then used to compute the equivariant K-theory of algebraically closed fields.
Equivariant compactifications of reductive groups can be described by combinatorial data. On the other hand, equivariant compactifications of the additive group G^n_a are more complicated in at least two respects. First, they often admit moduli. Second, even simple varieties (like projective spaces) admit many different structures as equivariant compactifications of the additive group. We give a dictionary relating Artinian local rings, certain systems of partial differential equations, and equivariant compactifications of G^n_a. As an application, we classify the structures on varieties like …
Let $G$ be a simple complex algebraic group, $P$ a parabolic subgroup of $G$ and $N$ the unipotent radical of $P.$ The so-called equivariant compactification of $N$ by $G/P$ is given by an action of $N$ on $G/P$ with a dense open orbit isomorphic to $N$. In this article, we investigate how many such equivariant compactifications there exist. Our result says that there is a unique equivariant compactification of $N$ by $G/P$, up to isomorphism, except $¶^n$.
We introduce the notion of Artin motives and cohomological motives over a scheme X. Given a cohomological motive M over X, we construct its punctual weight zero part $ω^0_X(M)$ as the universal Artin motive mapping to M. We use this to define a motive E_X over X which is an invariant of the singularities of X. The first half of the paper is devoted to the study of the functors $ω^0_X$ and the computation of the motives E_X. In the second half of the paper, we develop the application to locally symmetric varieties. Specifically, let Y be a locally symmetric variety and denote by p:W-->Z the pro…
We briefly introduce the theory of perverse sheaves with special attention to the topological situation where strata can have odd dimension. This is part of a project to use perverse sheaves on the topological reductive Borel-Serre compactification of a Hermitian locally symmetric space as a tool to study perverse sheaves on the Baily-Borel compactification, a projective algebraic variety. We sketch why the decomposition theorem holds for the natural map between the reductive Borel-Serre and the Baily-Borel compactifications. We demonstrate how to calculate extensions of simple perverse sheave…
Let X be an $n$-dimensional Fano manifold of Picard number 1. We study how many different ways X can compactify the complex vector group C^n equivariantly. Hassett and Tschinkel showed that when X = P^n with n \geq 2, there are many distinct ways that X can be realized as equivariant compactifications of C^n. Our result says that projective space is an exception: among Fano manifolds of Picard number 1 with smooth VMRT, projective space is the only one compactifying C^n equivariantly in more than one ways. This answers questions raised by Hassett-Tschinkel and Arzhantsev-Sharoyko.
Manin's conjecture predicts an asymptotic formula for the number of rational points of bounded height on a smooth projective variety in terms of its global geometric invariants. The strongest form of the conjecture implies certain inequalities among geometric invariants of the variety and of its subvarieties. We provide a general geometric framework explaining these phenomena, via the notion of balanced line bundles, and prove the required inequalities for a large class of equivariant compactifications of homogeneous spaces.
The $L^2$-cohomology of a locally symmetric variety is known to have the topological interpretation as the intersection homology of its Baily-Borel Satake compactification. In this article, we observe that even without the Hermitian hypothesis, the $L^p$-cohomology of an arithmetic quotient, for $p$ finite and sufficiently large, is isomorphic to the ordinary cohomology of its reductive Borel-Serre compactification. We use this to generalize a theorem of Mumford concerning homogeneous vector bundles, their invariant Chern forms and the canonical extensions of the bundles; here, though, we are …
Let G be a semisimple affine algebraic group and P a parabolic subgroup of G. We classify all flag varieties G/P which admit an action of the commutative unipotent group G_a^n with an open orbit.
We study torus-equivariant vector bundles $E$ on a complex projective variety $X$ which is either a Bott-Samelson-Demazure-Hansen variety or a wonderful compactification of a complex symmetric variety of minimal rank. We show that $E$ is nef (respectively, ample) if and only if its restriction to every torus--invariant curve in $X$ is nef (respectively, ample). We also compute the Seshadri constants $\varepsilon(E,x)$, where $x\, \in\, X$ is any point fixed by the action of a maximal torus.
Let $G$ be a simple algebraic group of adjoint type over $\mathbb C$, and let $M$ be the wonderful compactification of a symmetric space $G/H$. Take a $\widetilde G$--equivariant principal $R$--bundle $E$ on $M$, where $R$ is a complex reductive algebraic group and $\widetilde G$ is the universal cover of $G$. If the action of the isotropy group $\widetilde H$ on the fiber of $E$ at the identity coset is irreducible, then we prove that $E$ is polystable with respect to any polarization on $M$. Further, for wonderful compactification of the quotient of $\text{PSL}(n,{\mathbb C})$, $n\,\neq\, 4$…
We study faithful actions with a dense orbit of abelian unipotent groups on quintic del Pezzo varieties over a field of characteristic zero. Such varieties are forms of linear sections of the Grassmannian of planes in a 5-dimensional vector space. We characterize which smooth forms admit these types of actions and show that in case of existence, the action is unique up to equivalence by automorphisms. We also give a similar classification for mildly singular quintic del Pezzo threefolds and surfaces.

In this article we describe the $\tG\times \tG$-equivariant $K$-ring of $X$, where $\tG$ is a {\it factorial} cover of a connected complex reductive algebraic group $G$, and $X$ is a regular compactification of $G$. Furthermore, using the description of $K_{\tG\times \tG}(X)$, we describe the ordinary $K$-ring $K(X)$ as a free module of rank the cardinality of the Weyl group, over the $K$-ring of a toric bundle over $G/B$, with fibre the toric variety $\bar{T}^{+}$, associated to a smooth subdivision of the positive Weyl chamber. This generalizes our previous work on the wonderful compactifica…
We determine which singular del Pezzo surfaces are equivariant compactifications of G_a^2, to assist with proofs of Manin's conjecture for such surfaces. Additionally, we give an example of a singular quartic del Pezzo surface that is an equivariant compactification of a semidirect product of G_a and G_m.
An equivariant version of the twisted inverse pseudofunctor is defined, and equivariant versions of some important properties, including the Grothendieck duality of proper morphisms and flat base change are proved. As an application, a generalized version of Watanabe's theorem on the Gorenstein property of the ring of invariants is proved.
Given a quasi-reductive group $G$ over a local field $k$, using Berkovich geometry, we exhibit a family of $G(k)$-equivariant compactifications of the Bruhat-Tits building $\mathcal B(G, k)$, constructed and investigated by Solleveld and Lourenço. The compactification procedure consists in mapping the building in the analytification $G^{\mathrm{an}}$ of $G$, then composing this map with the projections from $G^{\mathrm{an}}$ to its (in general non-compact) pseudo-flag varieties $(G/P)^{\mathrm{an}}$, for $P$ ranging among the pseudo-parabolic subgroups of $G$. This generalises previous constru…
Let G be a split reductive group. We introduce the moduli problem of "bundle chains" parametrizing framed principal G-bundles on chains of lines. Any fan supported in a Weyl chamber determines a stability condition on bundle chains. Its moduli stack provides an equivariant toroidal compactification of G. All toric orbifolds may be thus obtained. Moreover, we get a canonical compactification of any semisimple G, which agrees with the wonderful compactification in the adjoint case, but which in other cases is an orbifold. Finally, we describe the connections with Losev-Manin's spaces of weighted…
In this article, we determine all equivariant compactifications of the three-dimensional vector group $\mathbf{G}_a^3$ which are smooth Fano threefolds with Picard number greater or equal than two.
We prove asymptotic formulas for the number of rational points of bounded height on smooth equivariant compactifications of the affine space. (Nous établissons un développement asymptotique du nombre de points rationnels de hauteur bornée sur les compactifications équivariantes lisses de l'espace affine.)
We classify all normal G^2_a-surfaces with Picard number one, and characterize which of these surfaces have at worst log canonical, and which have at worst log terminal singularities, answering a question of Hassett and Tschinkel (Int. Math. Res. Not., 1999). We also find all G^2_a-structures on these surfaces and show that these surfaces and their minimal desingularizations have the same G^2_a-structures (modulo equivalence of G^2_a-actions). In particular, we show that some of these surfaces admit one dimensional moduli of G^2_a-structures, answering another question of Hassett and Tschinkel…
We classify generically transitive actions of semidirect products of an additive and a multiplicative group on the projective plane. Motivated by the program to study the distribution of rational points on del Pezzo surfaces (Manin's conjecture), we determine all (possibly singular) del Pezzo surfaces that are equivariant compactifications of homogeneous spaces for such semidirect products.
We generalize in positive characteristics some results of Bien and Brion on log homogeneous compactifications of a homogeneous space under the action of a connected reductive group. We also construct an explicit smooth log homogeneous compactification of the general linear group by successive blow-ups starting from a grassmannian. By taking fixed points of certain involutions on this compactification, we obtain smooth log homogeneous compactifications of the special orthogonal and the symplectic groups.
We describe the equivariant cohomology ring of rationally smooth projective embeddings of reductive groups. These embeddings are the projectivizations of reductive monoids. Our main result describes their equivariant cohomology in terms of roots, idempotents, and underlying monoid data. Also, we characterize those embeddings whose equivariant cohomology ring is obtained via restriction to the associated toric variety. Such characterization is given in terms of the closed orbits.
In this article we describe the $G\times G$-equivariant $K$-ring of $X$, where $X$ is a regular compactification of a connected complex reductive algebraic group $G$. Furthermore, in the case when $G$ is a semisimple group of adjoint type, and $X$ its wonderful compactification, we describe its ordinary $K$-ring $K(X)$. More precisely, we prove that $K(X)$ is a free module over $K(G/B)$ of rank the cardinality of the Weyl group. We further give an explicit basis of $K(X)$ over $K(G/B)$, and also determine the structure constants with respect to this basis.
I will present an explicit formula for the intersection indices of the Chern classes of an arbitrary reductive group with hypersurfaces. This formula has the following applications. First, it allows to compute explicitly the Euler characteristic of complete intersections in reductive groups. Second, for any regular compactification of a reductive group, it computes the intersection indices of the Chern classes of the compactification with hypersurfaces. The formula is similar to the Brion--Kazarnovskii formula for the intersection indices of hypersurfaces in reductive groups. The proof uses an…
We study the distribution of rational points of bounded height on a one-sided equivariant compactification of $\mathrm{PGL}_2$ using automorphic representation theory of $\mathrm{PGL}_2$.
For a smooth quasi-projective scheme $X$ over a field $k$ with an action of a reductive group, we establish a spectral sequence connecting the equivariant and the ordinary higher Chow groups of $X$. For $X$ smooth and projective, we show that this spectral sequence degenerates, leading to an explicit relation between the equivariant and the ordinary higher Chow groups. We obtain several applications to algebraic $K$-theory. We show that for a reductive group $G$ acting on a smooth projective scheme $X$, the forgetful map $K^G_i(X) \to K_i(X)$ induces an isomorphism $K^G_i(X)/{I_G K^G_i(X)} \co…
We construct a relative compactification of Dolbeault moduli spaces of Higgs bundles for reductive algebraic groups on families of projective manifolds that is compatible with the Hitchin morphism.
To any affine scheme with a $\mathbb{G}_m$-action, we provide a Bousfield colocalization on the equivariant derived category of modules by constructing, via homotopical methods, an idempotent integral kernel. This endows the equivariant derived category with a canonical semi-orthogonal decomposition. As a special case, we demonstrate that grade-restriction windows appear as a consequence of this construction, giving a new proof of wall-crossing equivalences which works over an arbitrary base. The construction globalizes to yield interesting integral transforms associated to $D$-flips.
For a reductive connected group or a finite group over a field of characteristic zero, we define an equivariant algebraic cobordism theory by a generalized version of the double point relation of Levine-Pandharipande. We prove basic properties and the well-definedness of a canonical fixed point map. We also find explicit generators of the algebraic cobordism ring of the point when the group is finite abelian.
Let $X$ be a smooth complete curve, $G$ be a reductive group and $P\subset G$ a parabolic. Following Drinfeld, one defines a compactification $\widetilde{\on{Bun}}_P$ of the moduli stack of $P$-bundles on $X$. The present paper is concerned with the explicit description of the Intersection Cohomology sheaf of $\widetilde{\on{Bun}}_P$. The description is given in terms of the combinatorics of the Langlands dual Lie algebra $\check{\mathfrak g}$.
We give a summary of joint work with Michael Thaddeus that realizes toroidal compactifcations of split reductive groups as moduli spaces of framed bundles on chains of rational curves. We include an extension of this work that covers Artin stacks with good moduli spaces. We discuss, for complex groups, the symplectic counterpart of these compactifications, and conclude with some open problems about the moduli problem concerned.
A 1-parameter variation of Hodge structures corresponds to a holomorphic, horizontal, locally liftable map into a classifying space of Hodge structures. In this paper it is shown that such a map has a limit in the reductive Borel-Serre compactification of the classifying space. The boundary component in which the limit lies is a union over possible polarizations of classifying spaces of Hodge structures on the primitive parts. It is discussed which boundary components can contain such limit points.
We prove an analog of the Gauss-Bonnet formula for constructible sheaves on reductive groups. As a corollary from this formula we get that if a perverse sheaf on a reductive group is equivariant under the adjoint action, then its Euler characteristic is nonnegative.
Let X be a smooth projective complex variety, and let G be an algebraic reductive complex group. We define the notion of principal G-sheaf, that generalises the notion of principal G-bundle. Then we define a notion of semistability, and construct the projective moduli space of semistable principal G-sheaves on X. This is a natural compactification of the moduli space of principal G-bundles. This is the announcement note presented by the second author in the conference held at Catania (11-13 April 2001), dedicated to the 60th birthday of Silvio Greco. Detailed proofs will appear elsewhere.
Let $\text{X}$ denote a projective variety over an algebraically closed field on which a linear algebraic group acts with finitely many orbits. Then, a conjecture of Soergel and Lunts in the setting of Koszul duality and Langlands' philosophy, postulates that the equivariant derived category of bounded complexes with constructible equivariant cohomology sheaves on $\text{X}$ is equivalent to a full subcategory of the derived category of modules over a graded ring defined as a suitable graded $Ext$. Only special cases of this conjecture have been proven so far. {\it The purpose of this paper is…
We construct a moduli space of stable projective pairs with a nontrivial action of a connected reductive group. These stable reductive pairs are higher-dimensional analogs of stable n-pointed curves and generalize to the non-commutative case a functorial compactification of moduli of abelian varieties, and of toric pairs. We prove that, confirming a prediction of log Minimal Program, stable reductive pairs have semi log canonical singularities. Final version, to appear in Advances of Math.
Let $G$ be a connected reductive group over a perfect field $k$. We study a certain normal reductive monoid $\overline M$ associated to a parabolic $k$-subgroup $P$ of $G$. The group of units of $\overline M$ is the Levi factor $M$ of $P$. We show that $\overline M$ is a retract of the affine closure of the quasi-affine variety $G/U(P)$. Fixing a parabolic $P^-$ opposite to $P$, we prove that the affine closure of $G/U(P)$ is a retract of the affine closure of the boundary degeneration $(G \times G)/(P \times_M P^-)$. Using idempotents, we relate $\overline M$ to the Vinberg semigroup of $G$. …
In the present paper we provide a general algorithm to compute multiplicative cohomological operations on algebraic oriented cohomology of projective homogeneous G-varieties, where G is a split reductive algebraic group over a field of characteristic 0. More precisely, we extend such operations to the respective T-equivariant (T is a maximal split torus of G) oriented theories, and then compute them using equivariant Schubert calculus techniques. This generalizes an approach suggested by Garibaldi-Petrov-Semenov for Steenrod operations. We also show that operations on the theories of additive …
In this article, we study the étale cohomology of the compactification of Deligne-Lusztig varieties associated to a Coxeter element. We prove a result for the integral coefficients in the case of general linear group $GL_d$, and we conjecture that the similar result holds for general reductive groups.
In the paper we answer the following question: for a morphism of varieties (or, more generally, stacks), when the derived category of the base can be recovered from the derived category of the covering variety by means of descent theory? As a corollary, we show that for an action of a reductive group on a scheme, the derived category of equivariant sheaves is equivalent to the category of objects, equipped with an action of the group, in the ordinary derived category.
