A dual approach to defining the triangle sequence (a type of multidimensional continued fraction algorithm, initially developed in NT/9906016) for a pair of real numbers is presented, providing a new, clean geometric interpretation of the triangle sequence. We give a new criterion for when a triangle sequence uniquely describes a pair of numbers and give the first explicit examples of triangle sequences that do not uniquely describe a pair of reals. Finally, this dual approach yields that the triangle sequence is topologically strongly mixing, meaning in particular that it is topologically ergodic.
We give a new class of multidimensional $p$-adic continued fraction algorithms. We propose an algorithm in the class for which we can expect that multidimensional $p$-adic version of Lagrange's Theorem holds.
Most well-known multidimensional continued fractions, including the Mönkemeyer map and the triangle map, are generated by repeatedly subdividing triangles. This paper constructs a family of multidimensional continued fractions by permuting the vertices of these triangles before and after each subdivision. We obtain an even larger class of multidimensional continued fractions by composing the maps in the family. These include the algorithms of Brun, Parry-Daniels and Güting. We give criteria for when multidimensional continued fractions associate sequences to unique points, which allows us to d…
The study of combinatorial properties of mathematical objects is a very important research field and continued fractions have been deeply studied in this sense. However, multidimensional continued fractions, which are a generalization arising from an algorithm due to Jacobi, have been poorly investigated in this sense, up to now. In this paper, we propose a combinatorial interpretation of the convergents of multidimensional continued fractions in terms of counting some particular tilings, generalizing some results that hold for classical continued fractions.
This work is devoted to the proof of the statement about the existence of palindromic continued fractions in an arbitrary dimension. In addition, it is proved the criterion that an algebraic continued fraction has proper cyclic palindromic symmetry in the case $n = 4$. Klein polyhedra are considered as a multidimensional generalization of continued fractions.
Multidimensional continued fractions generalize classical continued fractions with the aim of providing periodic representations of algebraic irrationalities by means of integer sequences. However, there does not exist any algorithm that provides a periodic multidimensional continued fraction when algebraic irrationalities are given as inputs. In this paper, we provide a characterization for periodicity of Jacobi--Perron algorithm by means of linear recurrence sequences. In particular, we prove that partial quotients of a multidimensional continued fraction are periodic if and only if numerato…
The Lagrange theorem on continued fractions states that a number is a quadratic surd if and only if its continued fraction expansion is eventually periodic. The current paper is devoted to a multidimensional generalization of this fact. As a multidimensional analog of continued fractions so called Klein polyhedra are considered: given an irrational lattice in an n-dimensional Euclidean space, its Klein polyhedron is defined as the convex hull of nonzero lattice points with nonnegative coordinates.
We consider the geometric generalization of ordinary continued fraction to the multidimensional case introduced by F. Klein in 1895. A multidimensional periodic continued fraction is the union of sails with some special group acting freely on these sails. This group transposes the faces. In this article, we present a method of constructing "approximate" fundamental domains of algebraic multidimensional continued fractions and an algorithm testing whether this domain is indeed fundamental or not. We give some polynomial estimates on number of the operations for the algorithm. In conclusion we p…
We give a new algorithm of slow continued fraction expansion related to any real cubic number field as a 2-dimensional version of the Farey map. Using our algorithm, we can find the generators of dual substitutions (so-called tiling substitutions) for any stepped surface for any cubic direction.
The classical continued fraction is generalized for studying the rational approximation problem on multi-formal Laurent series in this paper, the construction is called m-continued fraction. It is proved that the approximants of an m-continued fraction converge to a multi-formal Laurent series, and are best rational approximations to it; conversely for any multi-formal Laurent series an algorithm called m-CF transform is introduced to obtain its m-continued fraction expansions; moreover, strict m-continued fractions, which are m-continued fractions imposed with some additional conditions, and …
The Gauss-Kuzmin statistics for the triangle map (a type of multidimensional continued fraction algorithm) are derived by examining the leading eigenfunction of the triangle map's transfer operator. The technical difficulty is finding the appropriate Banach space of functions. We also show that, by thinking of the triangle map's transfer operator as acting on a one-dimensional family of Hilbert spaces, the transfer can be thought of as a family of nuclear operators of trace class zero.
The Minkowski question mark function, maping the unit interval to itself, is a continuous, strictly increasing, one-to-one and onto function that has derivative zero almost everywhere. Key to these facts are the basic properties of continued fractions. Thus the question mark function is a naturally occurring number theoretic singular function. This paper generalizes the question mark function to the 216 triangle partition (TRIP) maps. These are multidimensional continued fractions which generate a family of almost all known multidimensional continued fractions. We show for each TRIP map that t…
We give continued fraction algorithms for a particular class of Fuchsian triangle groups. In particular, we give an explicit form of each such group that is a subgroup of the Hilbert modular group of its trace field and provide an interval map that is piecewise linear fractional, given in terms of group elements. Using natural extensions, we find an ergodic invariant measure for the interval map. We also study diophantine properties of approximation in terms of the continued fractions; and furthermore show that these continued fractions are appropriate to obtain transcendence results.
In this paper we study the geodesic continued fraction in the case of the Shimura curve coming from the $(2,3,7)$-triangle group. We construct a certain continued fraction expansion of real numbers using the so-called coding of the geodesics on the Shimura curve, and prove the Lagrange type periodicity theorem for the expansion which captures the fundamental relative units of quadratic extensions of $\mathbb{Q}(\cos(2π/7))$ with rank one relative unit groups. We also discuss the convergence of these continued fractions.
It is known that the continued fraction expansion of a real number is periodic if and only if the number is a quadratic irrational. In an attempt to generalize this phenomenon to other settings, Jun-Ichi Tamura and Shin-Ichi Yasutomi have developed a new algorithm for multidimensional continued fractions (Algebraic Jacobi-Perron algorithm) that involves cubic irrationals, and proved periodicity in some cubic number fields, such as $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt[3]{m^3+1})$ where $m\in\mathbb{Z}$, and $\mathbb{Q}(δ_m)$ where $δ_m$ is a root of $x^3-mx+1=0,\,\,m\in\mathbb{Z},\,\, m\geq3$ with the algorithm. …
Unlike the real case, there are not many studies and general techniques for providing simultaneous approximations in the field of $p$--adic numbers $\mathbb Q_p$. Here, we study the use of multidimensional continued fractions (MCFs) in this context. MCFs were introduced in $\mathbb R$ by Jacobi and Perron as a generalization of continued fractions and they have been recently defined also in $\mathbb Q_p$. We focus on the dimension two and study the quality of the simultaneous approximation to two $p$-adic numbers provided by $p$-adic MCFs, where $p$ is an odd prime. Moreover, given algebraical…
In this paper we study the three-dimensional analogue of the relation between the irrationality exponent of a real number and the growth of its regular continued fraction partial quotients. As a multidimensional generalisation of continued fractions, we consider Klein polyhedra.
Multidimensional continued fractions (MCFs) were introduced by Jacobi and Perron in order to generalize the classical continued fractions. In this paper, we propose an introductive fundamental study about MCFs in the field of the $p$--adic numbers $\mathbb Q_p$. First, we introduce them from a formal point of view, i.e., without considering a specific algorithm that produces the partial quotients of a MCF, and we perform a general study about their convergence in $\mathbb Q_p$. In particular, we derive some conditions about their convergence and we prove that convergent MCFs always strongly co…
We study the strong convergence of certain multidimensional continued fraction algorithms. In particular, in the two-dimensional case, we prove that the second Lyapunov exponent of Selmer's algorithm is negative and bound it away from zero. Moreover, we give heuristic results on several other continued fraction algorithms. Our results indicate that all classical multidimensional continued fraction algorithms cease to be strongly convergent for high dimensions. The only exception seems to be the Arnoux-Rauzy algorithm which, however, is defined only on a set of measure zero.
In the current paper we prove simplicity for the spectrum of Lyapunov exponents for triangle sequence and Selmer algorithm in dimension 3. We introduce a strategy that can be applied for a wide class of Markovian MCF.
In this work we prove a criterion for an algebraic continued fraction to have a proper palindromic symmetry in dimension $4$. As a multidimensional generalization of continued fractions, we consider Klein polyhedra.
In this paper we develop an integer-affine classification of three-dimensional multistory completely empty convex marked pyramids. We apply it to obtain the complete lists of compact two-dimensional faces of multidimensional continued fractions lying in planes with integer distances to the origin equal 2, 3, 4 ... The faces are considered up to the action of the group of integer-linear transformations. In conclusion we formulate some actual unsolved problems associated with the generalizations for n-dimensional faces and more complicated face configurations.
The Minkowski Question Mark function can be characterized as the unique homeomorphism of the real unit interval that conjugates the Farey map with the tent map. We construct an n-dimensional analogue of the Minkowski function as the only homeomorphism of an n-simplex that conjugates the piecewise-fractional map associated to the Monkemeyer continued fraction algorithm with an appropriate tent map.
The Stern diatomic sequence is closely linked to continued fractions via the Gauss map on the unit interval, which in turn can be understood via systematic subdivisions of the unit interval. Higher dimensional analogues of continued fractions, called multidimensional continued fractions, can be produced through various subdivisions of a triangle. We define triangle partition-Stern sequences (TRIP-Stern sequences for short), higher-dimensional generalizations of the Stern diatomic sequence, from the method of subdividing a triangle via various triangle partition algorithms. We then explore seve…
A new classification scheme for pairs of real numbers is given, generalizing earlier work of the author that used continued fraction, which in turn was motivated by ideas from statistical mechanics in general and work of Knauf and Fiala and Kleban in particular. Critical for this classification are the number theoretic and geometric properties of the triangle map, a type of multi-dimensional continued fraction.
Continued fractions are linked to Stern's diatomic sequence 0,1,1,2,1,3,2,3,1,4,... (given by the recursion relation a_2n=a_n and a_{2n+1} = a_n + a_{n+1}, where a_0=0 and a_1=1), which has long been known. Using a particular multidimensional continued fraction algorithm (the Farey algorithm), we will generalize the diatomic sequence to a collection of numbers that quite naturally should be called the triatomic sequence (or a two-dimensional Pascal with memory sequence). As continued fractions and the diatomic sequence can be thought of as coming from systematic subdivisions of the unit interv…
This paper is a direct continuation of "Functional analysis behind a Family of Multidimensional Continued Fractions: Part I," in which we started the exploration of the functional analysis behind the transfer operators for triangle partition maps, a family that includes many, if not most, well-known multidimensional continued fraction algorithms. This allows us now to find eigenfunctions of eigenvalue 1 for transfer operators associated with select triangle partition maps on specified Banach spaces. We proceed to prove that the transfer operators, viewed as acting on one-dimensional families o…
In this paper we prove in detail a criterion for an algebraic continued fraction to have a proper palindromic symmetry in dimension $4$. We also present a new proof of the criterion for an algebraic continued fraction to have a proper cyclic palindromic symmetry in dimension $4$. As a multidimensional generalization of continued fractions, we consider Klein polyhedra.
Triangle partition maps form a family that includes many, if not most, well-known multidimensional continued fraction algorithms. This paper begins the exploration of the functional analysis behind the transfer operator of each of these maps. We show that triangle partition maps give rise to two classes of transfer operators and present theorems regarding the origin of these classes; we also present related theorems on the form of transfer operators arising from compositions of triangle partition maps. In the next paper, Part II, we will find eigenfunctions of eigenvalue 1 for transfer operato…
In this paper we describe the group of symmetries of a two-dimensional continued fraction. As a multidimensional generalization of continued fractions we consider Klein polyhedra. We distinguish two types of symmetries: the Dirichlet-type ones, that correspond to the multiplication by units of the corresponding number field, and so called palindromic ones. The main result of the paper is a criterion for a two-dimensional continued fraction to have a palindromic symmetry. This criterion is analogous to the criterion for the period of a quadratic irrationality to be symmetric.
We construct a countable family of multi-dimensional continued fraction algorithms, built out of five specific multidimensional continued fractions, and find a wide class of cubic irrational real numbers a so that either (a, a^2) or (a, a-a^2) is purely periodic with respect to an element in the family. These cubic irrationals seem to be quite natural, as we show that, for every cubic number field, there exists a pair (u,u') with u a unit in the cubic number field (or possibly the quadratic extension of the cubic number field by the square root of the discriminant) such that (u,u') has a perio…
A Lagrange Theorem in dimension 2 is proved, for a particular two-dimensional algorithm, with a very natural geometrical definition. Dirichlet-type properties for the convergence of the algorithm are also proved. These properties procced from a geometrical quality of the algorithm. Some refercences are given to the works of various authors, in the domain of multidimensional continued fractions algorithms.
The classical Gauss Map is a piecewise continuous map from the unit interval to itself. From this map we retrieve the continued fraction expansion of irrational numbers and its dynamical properties give information about some arithmetic and algebraic properties of irrational numbers. In this notes we will explore some generalizations of the Gauss Map to higher dimensions and pose some questions and conjectures about the arithmetic/algebraic information that these maps may carry.
Using the slow triangle map (a type of multi-dimensional continued fraction algorithm), we exhibit a method for generating any number of new identities for subsets of integer partitions.
Fundamental to the theory of continued fractions is the fact that every infinite continued fraction with positive integer coefficients converges; however, it is unknown precisely which continued fractions with integer coefficients (not necessarily positive) converge. Here we present a simple test that determines whether an integer continued fraction converges or diverges. In addition, for convergent continued fractions the test specifies whether the limit is rational or irrational. An attractive way to visualise integer continued fractions is to model them as paths on the Farey graph, which is…
A {\it two-dimensional continued fraction expansion} is a map $μ$ assigning to every $x \in\mathbb R^2\setminus\mathbb Q^2$ a sequence $μ(x)=T_0,T_1,\dots$ of triangles $T_n$ with vertices $x_{ni}=(p_{ni}/d_{ni},q_{ni}/d_{ni})\in\mathbb Q^2, d_{ni}>0, p_{ni}, q_{ni}, d_{ni}\in \mathbb Z,$ $i=1,2,3$, such that \begin{eqnarray*} \det \left(\begin{matrix} p_{n1}& q_{n1} &d_{n1}\\ p_{n2}& q_{n2} &d_{n2}\\ p_{n3}& q_{n3} &d_{n3} \end{matrix} \right) = \pm 1\,\,\, \,\,\,\mbox{and}\,\,\,\,\,\, \bigcap_n T_n = \{x\}. \end{eqnarray*} We construct a two-dimensional continued fraction expansion $μ^*$ suc…
A continued fractions based verification of the Hurwitz values for the Hecke triangle groups is given, completing a program of Lehner's. Ergodic theory shows that Diophantine approximation by mediant convergents of the Rosen continued fractions is sufficient to determine the values that Haas and Series found by hyperbolic geometry.
It has been known that the Hosoya index of caterpillar graph can be calculated as the numerator of the simple continued fraction. Recently, the author \cite{Komatsu2020} introduces a more general graph called caterpillar-bond graph and shows that its Hosoya index can be calculated as the numerator of the general continued fraction. In this paper, we show how the Hosoya index of the graph with non-uniform ring structure can be calculated from the negative continued fraction. We also give the relation between some radial graphs and multidimensional continued fractions in the sense of the Hosoya …

In this paper we derive many infinite families of explicit exact formulas involving either squares or triangular numbers, two of which generalize Jacobi's 4 and 8 squares identities to 4n^2 or 4n(n+1) squares, respectively, without using cusp forms. In fact, we similarly generalize to infinite families all of Jacobi's explicitly stated degree 2, 4, 6, 8 Lambert series expansions of classical theta functions. In addition, we extend Jacobi's special analysis of 2 squares, 2 triangles, 6 squares, 6 triangles to 12 squares, 12 triangles, 20 squares, 20 triangles, respectively. These results, depen…
We show that several monoids of non-negative integer matrices enjoy a Pisot property: each matrix in that monoid has only one eigenvalue with absolute value larger than one. These monoids come from multidimensional continued fractions, namely the fully subtractive and Brun continued fractions.
As has been known since the time of Gromov's Nonsqueezing Theorem, symplectic embedding questions lie at the heart of symplectic geometry. After surveying some of the most important ways of measuring the size of a symplectic set, these notes discuss some recent developments concerning the question of when a 4-dimensional ellipsoid can be symplectically embedded in a ball. This problem turns out to have unexpected relations to the properties of continued fractions and of exceptional curves in blow ups of the complex projective plane. It is also related to questions of lattice packing of planar …
We introduce a notion of $q$-deformed rational numbers and $q$-deformed continued fractions. A $q$-deformed rational is encoded by a triangulation of a polygon and can be computed recursively. The recursive formula is analogous to the $q$-deformed Pascal identitiy for the Gaussian binomial coefficients, but the Pascal triangle is replaced by the Farey graph. The coefficients of the polynomials defining the $q$-rational count quiver subrepresentations of the maximal indecomposable representation of the graph dual to the triangulation. Several other properties, such as total positivity propertie…
Multidimensional continued fractions (MCFs) were introduced by Jacobi and Perron in order to obtain periodic representations for algebraic irrationals, as it is for continued fractions and quadratic irrationals. Since continued fractions have been also studied in the field of $p$--adic numbers $\mathbb Q_p$, also MCFs have been recently introduced in $\mathbb Q_p$ together to a $p$--adic Jacobi--Perron algorithm. In this paper, we address th study of two main features of this algorithm, i.e., finiteness and periodicity. In particular, regarding the finiteness of the $p$--adic Jacobi--Perron al…
We show that the additive-slow-Farey version of the traditional continued fractions algorithm has a natural interpretation as a method for producing integer partitions of a positive number $n$ into two smaller numbers, with multiplicity. We provide a complete description of how such integer partitions occur and of the conjugation for the corresponding Young shapes via the dynamics of the classical Farey tree. We use the dynamics of the Farey map to get a new formula for $p(2,n)$, the number of ways for partitioning $n$ into two smaller positive integers, with multiplicity. We then do the analo…
The fact that the euclidean algorithm eventually terminates is pervasive in mathematics. In the language of continued fractions, it can be stated by saying that the orbits of rational points under the Gauss map x-->{1/x} eventually reach zero. Analogues of this fact for Gauss maps defined over quadratic number fields have relevance in the theory of flows on translation surfaces, and have been established via powerful machinery, ultimately relying on the Veech dichotomy. In this paper, for each commensurability class of noncocompact triangle groups of quadratic invariant trace field, we constru…
There exists and is unique up to multiplication by a constant function a form of the highest dimension on the manifold of n-dimensional continued fractions in the sense of Klein, such that the form is invariant under the natural action of the group of projective transformations PGL(n+1). A measure corresponding to the integral of such form is called a Mobius measure. In the present paper we deduce an explicit formulae to calculate invariant forms in special coordinates. These formulae allow to give answers to some statistical questions of theory of multidimensional continued fractions. As an e…
We extend the results of our 2020 paper in the Annali della Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa, Classe di Scienze. There, we associated to each of an infinite family of triangle Fuchsian groups a one-parameter family of continued fraction maps and showed that the matching (or, synchronization) intervals are of full measure. Here, we find planar extensions of each of the maps, and prove the continuity of the entropy function associated to each one-parameter family. We also introduce a notion of "first pointwise expansive power" of an eventually expansive interval map. We prove that for every map …
We propose a new point of view on multidimensional continued fraction algorithms inspired by Rauzy induction. The generic behaviour of such an algorithm is described here as a random walk on a graph that we call simplicial system. These systems provide a family of examples for random walks with memory recorded by a finite dimensional vector. We introduce a general criterion on these graphs that induces ergodicity together with a bundle of many other dynamical properties. In particular, after computing the representation of Brun, Selmer and Arnoux-Rauzy-Poincare algorithm in this formalism, it …
For each positive integer n greater than or equal to 2, a new approach to expressing real numbers as sequences of nonnegative integers is given. The n=2 case is equivalent to the standard continued fraction algorithm. For n=3, it reduces to a new iteration of the triangle. Cubic irrationals that are roots of x^3 + k x^2 + x - 1 are shown to be precisely those numbers with purely periodic expansions of period length one. For general positive integers n, it reduces to a new iteration of an n dimensional simplex.
