In this paper we derive many infinite families of explicit exact formulas involving either squares or triangular numbers, two of which generalize Jacobi's 4 and 8 squares identities to 4n^2 or 4n(n+1) squares, respectively, without using cusp forms. In fact, we similarly generalize to infinite families all of Jacobi's explicitly stated degree 2, 4, 6, 8 Lambert series expansions of classical theta functions. In addition, we extend Jacobi's special analysis of 2 squares, 2 triangles, 6 squares, 6 triangles to 12 squares, 12 triangles, 20 squares, 20 triangles, respectively. These results, depending on new expansions for powers of various products of classical theta functions, arise in the setting of Jacobi elliptic functions, associated continued fractions, regular C-fractions, Hankel or Turanian determinants, Fourier series, Lambert series, inclusion/exclusion, Laplace expansion formula for determinants, and Schur functions. The Schur function form of these infinite families of identities are analogous to the eta-function identities of Macdonald. Moreover, the powers 4n(n+1), 2n^2+n, 2n^2-n that appear in Macdonald's work also arise at appropriate places in our analysis. A special case of our general methods yields a proof of the two Kac--Wakimoto conjectured identities involving representing a positive integer by sums of 4n^2 or 4n(n+1) triangular numbers, respectively.
We present new determinant expressions for regularized Schur multiple zeta values. These generalize the known Jacobi-Trudi formulae and can be used to quickly evaluate certain types of Schur multiple zeta values. Using these formulae we prove that every Schur multiple zeta value with alternating entries in 1 and 3 can be written as a polynomial in Riemann zeta values. Furthermore, we give conditions on the shape, which determine when such Schur multiple zetas are polynomials purely in odd or in even Riemann zeta values.
Using ordinary and exponential generating functions, we explore the reversion of power series defined by $2$nd order recurrences. We express the reversions in terms of Jacobi and Thron continued fractions. We find relations with Eulerian expressions using a transformation of continued fractions.
The aim of this paper is to study the convergence and divergence of the Rogers-Ramanujan and the generalized Rogers-Ramanujan continued fractions on the unit circle. We provide an example of an uncountable set of measure zero on which the Rogers-Ramanujan continued fraction $R(x)$ diverges and which enlarges a set previously found by Bowman and Mc Laughlin. We further study the generalized Rogers-Ramanujan continued fractions $R_a(x)$ for roots of unity $a$ and give explicit convergence and divergence conditions. As such, we extend some work of Huang towards a question originally investigated …
We evaluate in closed form, for the first time, certain classes of double series, which are remindful of lattice sums. Elliptic functions, singular moduli, class invariants, and the Rogers--Ramanujan continued fraction play central roles in our evaluations
We study the Kronecker symbol $\left(\frac st\right)$ for the sequence of the convergents $s/t$ of a purely periodic continued fraction expansion. Whereas the corresponding sequence of Jacobi symbols is always periodic, it turns out that the sequence of Kronecker symbols may be aperiodic. Our main result describes the period length in the periodic case in terms of the period length of the sequence of Jacobi symbols and gives a necessary and sufficient condition for the occurrence of the aperiodic case.
For a complex polynomial $D(t)$ of even degree, one may define the continued fraction of $\sqrt{D(t)}$. This was found relevant already by Abel in 1826, and later by Chebyshev, concerning integration of (hyperelliptic) differentials; they realized that, contrary to the classical case of square roots of positive integers treated by Lagrange and Galois, we do not always have pre-periodicity of the partial quotients. In this paper we shall prove that, however, a correct analogue of Lagrange's theorem still exists in full generality: pre-periodicity of the {\it degrees} of the partial quotients al…
Let $R(q)$ be the Rogers-Ramanujan continued fraction. We give different proofs of two complementary relations for $R(q)$ given by Ramanujan and proved by Watson and Ramanathan. Our proofs only use product expansions for classical Jacobi theta functions.
Multidimensional continued fractions (MCFs) were introduced by Jacobi and Perron in order to obtain periodic representations for algebraic irrationals, as it is for continued fractions and quadratic irrationals. Since continued fractions have been also studied in the field of $p$--adic numbers $\mathbb Q_p$, also MCFs have been recently introduced in $\mathbb Q_p$ together to a $p$--adic Jacobi--Perron algorithm. In this paper, we address th study of two main features of this algorithm, i.e., finiteness and periodicity. In particular, regarding the finiteness of the $p$--adic Jacobi--Perron al…
We study the Pieri type formulas for the Schur multiple zeta functions along with those for the Schur polynomials. To formulate these formulas, we introduce a new insertion rule for adding boxes in the Young tableaux and obtain the results for the hook type Schur multiple zeta functions. For the proof, we show {certain} extended Jacobi-Trudi formulas for the Schur multiple zeta functions.
We find closed-form expressions for the Schur indices of 4d $\mathcal{N}=2^{*}$ super Yang-Mills theory with unitary gauge groups for arbitrary ranks via the Fermi-gas formulation. They can be written as a sum over the Young diagrams associated with spectral zeta functions of an ideal Fermi-gas system. These functions are expressed in terms of the twisted Weierstrass functions, generating functions for quasi-Jacobi forms. The indices lie in the polynomial ring generated by the Kronecker theta function and the Weierstrass functions which contains the polynomial ring of the quasi-Jacobi forms. T…
The Hankel determinants of a given power series $f$ can be evaluated by using the Jacobi continued fraction expansion of $f$. However the existence of the Jacobi continued fraction needs that all Hankel determinants of $f$ are nonzero. We introduce {\it Hankel continued fraction}, whose existene and unicity are guaranteed without any condition for the power series $f$. The Hankel determinants can also be evaluated by using the Hankel continued fraction. It is well known that the continued fraction expansion of a quadratic irrational number is ultimately periodic. We prove a similar result for …
Unlike the real case, there are not many studies and general techniques for providing simultaneous approximations in the field of $p$--adic numbers $\mathbb Q_p$. Here, we study the use of multidimensional continued fractions (MCFs) in this context. MCFs were introduced in $\mathbb R$ by Jacobi and Perron as a generalization of continued fractions and they have been recently defined also in $\mathbb Q_p$. We focus on the dimension two and study the quality of the simultaneous approximation to two $p$-adic numbers provided by $p$-adic MCFs, where $p$ is an odd prime. Moreover, given algebraical…
The study of combinatorial properties of mathematical objects is a very important research field and continued fractions have been deeply studied in this sense. However, multidimensional continued fractions, which are a generalization arising from an algorithm due to Jacobi, have been poorly investigated in this sense, up to now. In this paper, we propose a combinatorial interpretation of the convergents of multidimensional continued fractions in terms of counting some particular tilings, generalizing some results that hold for classical continued fractions.
It is known that the continued fraction expansion of a real number is periodic if and only if the number is a quadratic irrational. In an attempt to generalize this phenomenon to other settings, Jun-Ichi Tamura and Shin-Ichi Yasutomi have developed a new algorithm for multidimensional continued fractions (Algebraic Jacobi-Perron algorithm) that involves cubic irrationals, and proved periodicity in some cubic number fields, such as $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt[3]{m^3+1})$ where $m\in\mathbb{Z}$, and $\mathbb{Q}(δ_m)$ where $δ_m$ is a root of $x^3-mx+1=0,\,\,m\in\mathbb{Z},\,\, m\geq3$ with the algorithm. …
We generalize the standard Poisson summation formula for lattices so that it operates on the level of theta series, allowing us to introduce noninteger dimension parameters (using the dimensionally continued Fourier transform). When combined with one of the proofs of the Jacobi imaginary transformation of theta functions that does not use the Poisson summation formula, our proof of this generalized Poisson summation formula also provides a new proof of the standard Poisson summation formula for dimensions greater than 2 (with appropriate hypotheses on the function being summed). In general, ou…
It is possible to define a continued fraction expansion of elements in a function field of a curve by expanding as a Laurent series in a local parameter. Considering the square root of a polynomial $\sqrt{D(t)}$ leads to an interesting theory related to polynomial Pell equations. Unlike the classical Pell equation, the corresponding polynomial equation is not always solvable and its solvability is related to arithmetic conditions on the Jacobian (or generalized Jacobian) of the curve defined by $y^2=D(t)$. In this setting, it has been shown by Zannier in \cite{zannier} that the sequence of the…
Multidimensional continued fractions generalize classical continued fractions with the aim of providing periodic representations of algebraic irrationalities by means of integer sequences. However, there does not exist any algorithm that provides a periodic multidimensional continued fraction when algebraic irrationalities are given as inputs. In this paper, we provide a characterization for periodicity of Jacobi--Perron algorithm by means of linear recurrence sequences. In particular, we prove that partial quotients of a multidimensional continued fraction are periodic if and only if numerato…
We introduce Schur multiple zeta functions which interpolate both the multiple zeta and multiple zeta-star functions of the Euler-Zagier type combinatorially. We first study their basic properties including a region of absolute convergence and the case where all variables are the same. Then, under an assumption on variables, some determinant formulas coming from theory of Schur functions such as the Jacobi-Trudi, Giambelli and dual Cauchy formula are established with the help of Macdonald's ninth variation of Schur functions. Moreover, we investigate the quasi-symmetric functions corresponding…
We exhibit a method to use continued fractions in function fields to find new families of hyperelliptic curves over the rationals with given torsion order in their Jacobians. To show the utility of the method, we exhibit a new infinite family of curves over $\mathbb Q$ with genus two whose Jacobians have torsion order eleven. {\bf In this updated version, we correct an error in the initial paper:} The ``new" family claimed in the original Theorem~1 was pointed out by Professor D.~Lorenzini to have elements isomorphic with elements in Flynn's family (as defined in the paper); his guess that the…
Using continued fraction expansions of certain polygamma functions as a main tool, we find orthogonal polynomials with respect to the odd-index Bernoulli polynomials $B_{2k+1}(x)$ and the Euler polynomials $E_{2k+ν}(x)$, for $ν=0, 1, 2$. In the process we also determine the corresponding Jacobi continued fractions (or J-fractions) and Hankel determinants. In all these cases the Hankel determinants are polynomials in $x$ which factor completely over the rationals.
We provide several asymptotic expansions of the prime counting function $π(x)$ and related functions. We define an {\it asymptotic continued fraction expansion} of a complex-valued function of a real or complex variable to be a possibly divergent continued fraction whose approximants provide an asymptotic expansion of the given function. We show that, for each positive integer $n$, two well-known continued fraction expansions of the exponential integral function $E_n(z)$ correspondingly yield two asymptotic continued fraction expansions of $π(x)/x$. We prove this by first establishing some gen…
A Hecke action on the space of periods of cusp forms, which is compatible with that on the space of cusp forms, was first computed using continued fraction and an explicit algebraic formula of Hecke operators acting on the space of period functions of modular forms was derived by studying the rational period functions. As an application an elementary proof of the Eichler-Selberg trace formula was derived. Similar modification has been applied to period space of Maass cusp forms with spectral parameter $s$. In this paper we study the space of period functions of Jacobi forms by means of Jacobi …
Multidimensional continued fractions (MCFs) were introduced by Jacobi and Perron in order to generalize the classical continued fractions. In this paper, we propose an introductive fundamental study about MCFs in the field of the $p$--adic numbers $\mathbb Q_p$. First, we introduce them from a formal point of view, i.e., without considering a specific algorithm that produces the partial quotients of a MCF, and we perform a general study about their convergence in $\mathbb Q_p$. In particular, we derive some conditions about their convergence and we prove that convergent MCFs always strongly co…
The Euler numbers occur in the Taylor expansion of $\tan(x)+\sec(x)$. Since Stieltjes, continued fractions and Hankel determinants of the even Euler numbers, on the one hand, of the odd Euler numbers, on the other hand, have been widely studied separately. However, no Hankel determinants of the (mixed) Euler numbers have been obtained and explicitly calculated. The reason for that is that some Hankel determinants of the Euler numbers are null. This implies that the Jacobi continued fraction of the Euler numbers does not exist. In the present paper, this obstacle is bypassed by using the Hankel…
We examine the polynomial analogues of McMullen's and Zaremba's conjectures on continued fractions with bounded partial quotients. It has already been proved by Blackburn that if the base field is infinite, then the polynomial analogue of Zaremba's conjecture holds; we will prove this again with a different method and examine some known results for finite base fields. Translating to the polynomial setting a result of Mercat, we will prove that the polynomial analogue of McMullen's conjecture holds over infinite algebraic extensions of finite fields and that, over finite fields, it would be a c…
For a monic polynomial $D(X)$ of even degree, express $\sqrt D$ as a Laurent series in $X^{-1}$; this yields a continued fraction expansion (similar to continued fractions of real numbers): \[\sqrt D=a_0+\dfrac{1}{a_1+\dfrac{1}{a_2+\dfrac{1}{\ddots}}},\quad a_i\text{ polynomials in }X.\] Such continued fractions were first considered by Abel in 1826, and later by Chebyshev. It turns out they are rarely periodic unless $D$ is defined over a finite field. Around 2001 van der Poorten studied non-periodic continued fractions of $\sqrt D$, with $D$ defined over the rationals, and simultaneously the…
We consider new series expansions for variants of the so-termed ordinary geometric square series generating functions originally defined in the recent article titled "Square Series Generating Function Transformations" (arXiv: 1609.02803). Whereas the original square series transformations article adapts known generating function transformations to construct integral representations for these square series functions enumerating the square powers of $q^{n^2}$ for some fixed non-zero $q$ with $|q| < 1$, we study the expansions of these special series through power series generated by Jacobi-type …
We construct new continued fraction expansions of Jacobi-type J-fractions in $z$ whose power series expansions generate the ratio of the $q$-Pochhamer symbols, $(a; q)_n / (b; q)_n$, for all integers $n \geq 0$ and where $a,b,q \in \mathbb{C}$ are non-zero and defined such that $|q| < 1$ and $|b/a| < |z| < 1$. If we set the parameters $(a, b) := (q, q^2)$ in these generalized series expansions, then we have a corresponding J-fraction enumerating the sequence of terms $(1-q) / (1-q^{n+1})$ over all integers $n \geq 0$. Thus we are able to define new $q$-series expansions which correspond to the…
