For each positive integer n greater than or equal to 2, a new approach to expressing real numbers as sequences of nonnegative integers is given. The n=2 case is equivalent to the standard continued fraction algorithm. For n=3, it reduces to a new iteration of the triangle. Cubic irrationals that are roots of x^3 + k x^2 + x - 1 are shown to be precisely those numbers with purely periodic expansions of period length one. For general positive integers n, it reduces to a new iteration of an n dimensional simplex.
We find the limiting proportion of periodic points in towers of finite fields for polynomial maps associated to algebraic groups, namely pure power maps z^d and Chebyshev polynomials.
We study periodic representations in number systems with an algebraic base $β$ (not a rational integer). We show that if $β$ has no Galois conjugate on the unit circle, then there exists a finite integer alphabet $\mathcal A$ such that every element of $\mathbb Q(β)$ admits an eventually periodic representation with base $β$ and digits in $\mathcal A$.
The degree sequence of the algebraic numbers in an algebraic linear recurrence sequence is shown to be virtually periodic. This is proved using the Skolem-Mahler-Lech theorem. It has applications to the degree sequence and the minimal polynomial sequence for exponential sums over finite fields. The degree periodicity also holds for some more complicated non-linear recurrence sequences. We give one example from the iterations of a polynomial map. This depending on the dynamic Mordell-Lang conjecture which has been proved in some cases.
All the periodic points of a certain algebraic function related to the Rogers-Ramanujan continued fraction $r(τ)$ are determined. They turn out to be $0, \frac{-1 \pm \sqrt{5}}{2}$, and the conjugates over $\mathbb{Q}$ of the values $r(w_d/5)$, where $w_d$ is one of a specific set of algebraic integers, divisible by the square of a prime divisor of 5, in the field $K_d=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-d})$, as $-d$ ranges over all negative quadratic discriminants for which $\left(\frac{-d}{5}\right) = +1$. This yields new insights on class numbers of orders in the fields $K_d$. Conjecture 1 of Part I is prov…
By replacing the letters to polynomials in F_2[t], an infinite word, over a finite alphabet, can be seen as the sequence of partial quotients of a continued fraction in F_2((1/t)). Here is described a family of such infinite words, corresponding to continued fractions which are algebraic over F_2(t). This family includes a classical example already studied in different previous works by Y. Hu, G-N. Han, Y. Bugeaud and the author of this note.
Solutions of the quartic Fermat equation in ring class fields of odd conductor over quadratic fields $K=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-d})$ with $-d \equiv 1$ (mod $8$) are shown to be periodic points of a fixed algebraic function $T(z)$ defined on the punctured disk $0< |z|_2 \le \frac{1}{2}$ of the maximal unramified, algebraic extension $\textsf{K}_2$ of the $2$-adic field $\mathbb{Q}_2$. All ring class fields of odd conductor over imaginary quadratic fields in which the prime $p=2$ splits are shown to be generated by complex periodic points of the algebraic function $T$, and conversely, all but two of …
In this part we show that the diophantine equation $X^5+Y^5=\varepsilon^5(1-X^5Y^5)$, where $\varepsilon=\frac{-1+\sqrt{5}}{2}$, has solutions in specific abelian extensions of quadratic fields $K=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-d})$ in which $-d \equiv \pm 1$ (mod $5$). The coordinates of these solutions are values of the Rogers-Ramanujan continued fraction $r(τ)$, and are shown to be periodic points of an algebraic function.
A continued fraction $v(τ)$ of Ramanujan is evaluated at certain arguments in the field $K = \mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-d})$, with $-d \equiv 1$ (mod $8$), in which the ideal $(2) = \wp_2 \wp_2'$ is a product of two prime ideals. These values of $v(τ)$ are shown to generate the inertia field of $\wp_2$ or $\wp_2'$ in an extended ring class field over the field $K$. The conjugates over $\mathbb{Q}$ of these same values, together with $0, -1 \pm \sqrt{2}$, are shown to form the exact set of periodic points of a fixed algebraic function $\hat F(x)$, independent of $d$. These are analogues of similar resul…
In this paper, we define the bi-periodic Fibonacci matrix sequence that represent bi-periodic Fibonacci numbers. Then, we investigate generating function, Binet formula and summations of bi-periodic Fibonacci matrix sequence. After that, we say that some behaviours of bi-periodic Fibonacci numbers also can be obtained by considering properties of this new matrix sequence. Finally, we express that well-known matrix sequences, such as Fibonacci, Pell, $k$-Fibonacci matrix sequences are special cases of this generalized matrix sequence.
In the first part we associate a periodic sequence to a partition and study the connection the distribution of elements of uniform limit of the sequences. Then some facts of statistical independence of these limits are proved
The exact set of periodic points in $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}$ of the algebraic function $\widehat{F}(z)=(-1\pm \sqrt{1-z^4})/z^2$ is shown to consist of the coordinates of certain solutions $(x,y)=(π, ξ)$ of the Fermat equation $x^4+y^4=1$ in ring class fields $Ω_f$ over imaginary quadratic fields $K=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-d})$ of odd conductor $f$, where $-d \equiv 1$ (mod $8$). This is shown to result from the fact that the $2$-adic function $F(z)=(-1+ \sqrt{1-z^4})/z^2$ is a lift of the Frobenius automorphism on the coordinates $π$ for which $|π|_2<1$, for any $d \equiv 7$ (mod $8$), when consider…
In this paper, we introduce the bi-periodic Lucas matrix sequence and present some fundamental properties of this generalized matrix sequence. Moreover, we investigate the important relationships between the bi-periodic Fibonacci and Lucas matrix sequences. We express that some behaviours of bi-periodic Lucas numbers also can be obtained by considering properties of this new matrix sequence. Finally, we say that the matrix sequences as Lucas, $k$-Lucas and Pell-Lucas are special cases of this generalized matrix sequence.
First we generalize the Thue-Morse sequence (the generalized Thue-Morse sequences) by a cyclic permutations and p-adic system, and consider the necessary-sufficient condition that it is non-periodic. Moreover if the generalized Thue-Morse sequence is not periodic, then all equally spaced subsequences of the generalized Thue-Morse sequences are not periodic. Finally we apply recently combinatorial transcendence results to the generalized non-periodic Thue-Morse sequence, we can found many transcendental numbers.
Through the following, we establish the conditions which allow us to express recursive sequences of real numbers, enumerated through the recurrence relation a_{n+1} = Aa_n + Ba_{n-1}, by means of algebraic equations in two variables of degree n 2 N. Then we apply main results to the relations that express Fibonacci numbers, domino tillings of the graph W_4 x P_{n-1} and Pythagorean triples.
Multidimensional continued fractions generalize classical continued fractions with the aim of providing periodic representations of algebraic irrationalities by means of integer sequences. However, there does not exist any algorithm that provides a periodic multidimensional continued fraction when algebraic irrationalities are given as inputs. In this paper, we provide a characterization for periodicity of Jacobi--Perron algorithm by means of linear recurrence sequences. In particular, we prove that partial quotients of a multidimensional continued fraction are periodic if and only if numerato…
We prove that if f is a self-map of an algebraic variety over a field K, then under certain conditions on X, f and K the set of possible periods of K-valued periodic points of f is finite.
There exists a particular subset of algebraic power series over a finite field which, for different reasons, can be compared to the subset of quadratic real numbers. The continued fraction expansion for these elements, called hyperquadratic, can sometimes be made explicit. Here we describe this expansion for a wide family of hyperquadratic power series in odd characteristic. This leads to consider interesting recurrent sequences in the finite base field when it is not a prime field.
Explicit solutions of the cubic Fermat equation are constructed in ring class fields $Ω_f$, with conductor $f$ prime to $3$, of any imaginary quadratic field $K$ whose discriminant satisfies $d_K \equiv 1$ (mod $3$), in terms of the Dedekind $η$-function. As $K$ and $f$ vary, the set of coordinates of all solutions is shown to be the exact set of periodic points of a single algebraic function and its inverse defined on natural subsets of the maximal unramified, algebraic extension $\textsf{K}_3$ of the $3$-adic field $\mathbb{Q}_3$. This is used to give a dynamical proof of a class number rela…
Let ${\mathcal F}=(F_i:i\ge 0)$ be the sequence of Fibonacci numbers, and $j$ and $e$ be non negative integers. We study the periodicity of the power Fibonacci sequences ${\mathcal F}^e(F_j)=(F_i^e\pmod{F_j}: i\ge 0)$. It is shown that for every $j,e\ge 1$ the sequence ${\mathcal F}^e(F_j)$ is periodic and its periodicity is computed. The result was previously known for ${\mathcal F}(F_j)$; that is, for $e=1$. For $e\in \{1, 2\}$, the values of the normalized residues $ρ_i\equiv F_i^e\pmod{F_j}$ with $0\le ρ_i<F_j-1$ are obtained.
W. M. Schmidt, A. D. Pollington, and F. Schweiger have studied when normality with respect to one expansion is equivalent to normality with respect to another expansion. Following in their footsteps, we show that when $Q$ is an eventually periodic basic sequence, that $Q$-normality and $Q$-distribution normality are equivalent to normality in base $b$ where $b$ is dependent on $Q$. We also show that boundedness of the basic sequence is not sufficient for this equivalence.
We study the Kronecker symbol $\left(\frac st\right)$ for the sequence of the convergents $s/t$ of a purely periodic continued fraction expansion. Whereas the corresponding sequence of Jacobi symbols is always periodic, it turns out that the sequence of Kronecker symbols may be aperiodic. Our main result describes the period length in the periodic case in terms of the period length of the sequence of Jacobi symbols and gives a necessary and sufficient condition for the occurrence of the aperiodic case.
We give a few remarks on the periodic sequence $a_n=\binom{n}{x}~(mod~m)$ where $x,m,n\in \mathbb{N}$, which is periodic with minimal length of the period being $$\ell(m,x)={\displaystyle\prod^w_{i=1}p^{\lfloor\log_{p_i}x\rfloor+b_i}_i}=m{\displaystyle\prod^w_{i=1}p^{\lfloor\log_{p_i}x\rfloor}_i}$$ where $m=\prod^w_{i=1}p^{b_i}_i$. We prove certain interesting properties of $\ell(m,x)$ and derive a few other results and congruences.
In this paper, we consider a generalization of Horadam sequence {w_n} which is defined by the recurrence w_n = aw_n-1 + cw_n-2; if n is even, w_n = bw_n-1 + cw_n-2; if n is odd with arbitrary initial conditions w_0, w_1 and nonzero real numbers a, b, and c. We investigate some congruence properties of the generalized Horadam sequence {w_n}.
Several operations can be defined on the set of all linear recurrent sequences, such as the binomial convolution (Hurwitz product) or the multinomial convolution (Newton product). Using elementary techniques, we prove that this set equipped with the termwise sum and the aforementioned products are R-algebras, given any commutative ring $R$ with identity. Moreover, we provide explicitly a characteristic polynomial of the Hurwitz product and Newton product of any two linear recurrent sequences. Finally, we also investigate whether these $R-$algebras are isomorphic, considering also the R-algebra…
We address the question of non-vanishing of $L(1,f)$ where $f$ is an algebraic-valued, periodic arithmetical function. We do this by characterizing algebraic-valued, periodic functions $f$ for which $L(1,f)=0$. The case of odd functions was resolved by Baker, Birch and Wirsing in 1973. We apply a result of Bass to obtain a characterization for the even functions. We also describe a theorem of the first two authors which says that it is enough to consider only the even and the odd functions in order to obtain a complete characterization.
For any positive integer $r$, the $r$-Fubini number with parameter $n$, denoted by $F_{n,r}$, is equal to the number of ways that the elements of a set with $n+r$ elements can be weak ordered such that the $r$ least elements are in distinct orders. In this article we focus on the sequence of residues of the $r$-Fubini numbers modulo a positive integer $s$ and show that this sequence is periodic and then, exhibit how to calculate its period length. As an extra result, an explicit formula for the $r$-Stirling numbers is obtained which is frequently used in calculations.
Recent examples of periodic bifurcations in descendant trees of finite p-groups with p in {2,3} are used to show that the possible p-class tower groups G of certain multiquadratic fields K with p-class group of type (2,2,2), resp. (3,3), form periodic sequences in the descendant tree of the elementary abelian root C(2)xC(2)xC(2), resp. C(3)xC(3). The particular vertex of the periodic sequence which occurs as the p-class tower group G of an assigned field K is determined uniquely by the p-class number of a quadratic, resp. cubic, auxiliary field k, associated unambiguously to K. Consequently, t…
We present family of automatic sequences that define algebraic continued fractions in characteristic 2. This family is constructed from ultimately period words and contains the period-doubling sequence.
We construct a log algebraic version of the homotopy sequence for a quasi-projective normal crossing log variety over a log point of characteristic zero and prove some exactness properties of it. Our proofs are purely algebraic.
For any positive integer $q$, the sequence of the Euler up/down numbers reduced modulo $q$ was proved to be ultimately periodic by Knuth and Buckholtz. Based on computer simulations, we state for each value of $q$ precise conjectures for the minimal period and for the position at which the sequence starts being periodic. When $q$ is a power of $2$, a sequence defined by Arnold appears, and we formulate a conjecture for a simple computation of this sequence.
We present two families of automatic sequences that define algebraic continued fractions in characteristic $2$. The period-doubling sequence belongs to the first first family $\mathcal{P}$; and its sum, the Thue-Morse sequence, belongs to the second family $\mathcal{G}$. The family $\mathcal{G}$ contains all the iterated sums of sequences from the $\mathcal{P}$ and more.
We study the existence of primes and of primitive divisors in classical divisibility sequences defined over function fields. Under various hypotheses, we prove that Lucas sequences and elliptic divisibility sequences over function fields defined over number fields contain infinitely many irreducible elements. We also prove that an elliptic divisibility sequence over a function field has only finitely many terms lacking a primitive divisor.
We prove that certain sequences of finite continued fractions associated with a 2-periodic continued fraction with period a,b>0 are moment sequences of discrete signed measures supported in the interval [-1,1], and we give necessary and sufficient conditions in order that these measures are positive. For a=b=1 this proves that the sequence of ratios F_{n+1}/F_{n+2}, n\ge 0 of consecutive Fibonacci numbers is a moment sequence.
An existing dialogue between number theory and dynamical systems is advanced. A combinatorial device gives necessary and sufficient conditions for a sequence of non-negative integers to count the periodic points in a dynamical system. This is applied to study linear recurrence sequences which count periodic points. Instances where the $p$-parts of an integer sequence themselves count periodic points are studied. The Mersenne sequence provides one example, and the denominators of the Bernoulli numbers provide another. The methods give a dynamical interpretation of many classical congruences suc…
In a work of T. Saito, the action of algebraic correspondences on the etale cohomology of varieties over local fields with semistable reduction is related to correspondences on smaller strata via weight spectral sequences. We give an intersection theoretic construction of these correspondences. Under a finiteness condition this enables us to compute them without involving the blow-ups of products, and prove their compatibility with compositions. These features are essential for the application to Shimura varieties.
We give necessary and sufficient conditions for a sequence to be exactly realizable as the sequence of numbers of periodic points in a dynamical system. Using these conditions, we show that no non-constant polynomial is realizable, and give some conditions on realizable binary recurrence sequences. Realization in rate is always possible for sufficiently rapidly-growing sequences, and is never possible for slowly-growing sequences. Finally, we discuss the relationship between the growth rate of periodic points and the growth rate of points with specified least period.
For $β> 1$ a real algebraic integer ({\it the base}), the finite alphabets $\mathcal{A} \subset \mathbb{Z}$ which realize the identity $\mathbb{Q}(β) = {\rm Per}_{\mathcal{A}}(β)$, where ${\rm Per}_{\mathcal{A}}(β)$ is the set of complex numbers which are $(β, \mathcal{A})$-eventually periodic representations, are investigated. Comparing with the greedy algorithm, minimal and maximal alphabets are defined. The maximal alphabets are shown to be correlated to the asymptotics of the Pierce numbers of the base $β$ and Lehmer's problem. The notion of rewriting trail is introduced to construct inter…
For any integer $q\geq 2$ we provide a formula to express indefinite sums of a sequence $(f(n))_{n\geq 0}$ weighted by $q$-periodic sequences in terms of indefinite sums of sequences $(f(qn+p))_{n\geq 0}$, where $p\in\{0,\ldots,q-1\}$. When explicit expressions for the latter sums are available, this formula immediately provides explicit expressions for the former sums. We also illustrate this formula through some examples.
We prove that congruences of the cogrowth sequence in a unitriangular group UT$(m, \Bbb Z)$ are undecidable. This is in contrast with abelian groups, where the congruences of the cogrowth sequence are decidable. As an application, we conclude that there is no algorithm to present the cogrowth series as the diagonal of a rational function.
We first introduce a family of binary $pq^2$-periodic sequences based on the Euler quotients modulo $pq$, where $p$ and $q$ are two distinct odd primes and $p$ divides $q-1$. The minimal polynomials and linear complexities are determined for the proposed sequences provided that $2^{q-1} \not\equiv 1 \mod{q^2}.$ The results show that the proposed sequences have high linear complexities.
An expression in terms of (cyclotomic) harmonic sums can be simplified by the quasi-shuffle algebra in terms of the so-called basis sums. By construction, these sums are algebraically independent within the quasi-shuffle algebra. In this article we show that the basis sums can be represented within a tower of difference ring extensions where the constants remain unchanged. This property enables one to embed this difference ring for the (cyclotomic) harmonic sums into the ring of sequences. This construction implies that the sequences produced by the basis sums are algebraically independent ove…
